Abstract:The strong coupling between excitons and Fabry-Pérot (F-P) cavity modes in tungsten sulfide (WS2) thin layers was studied. By using home-made micro-reflectance spectroscopic technique, we observed the anti-crossing behavior between cavity mode and excitons with flake's thickness dependence. Giant Rabi splitting of ~270 meV for A exciton and ~780 meV for B exciton were obtained from the fitting of the cavity polariton dispersions by use of the coupled oscillators model.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit strong optical transitions with significant potential for optoelectronic devices. In particular they are suited for cavity quantum electrodynamics in which strong coupling leads to polariton formation as a root to realisation of inversionless lasing, polariton condensation and superfluidity. Demonstrations of such strongly correlated phenomena to date have often relied on cryogenic temperatures, high excitation densities and were frequently impaired by strong material disorder. At room-temperature, experiments approaching the strong coupling regime with transition metal dichalcogenides have been reported, but well resolved exciton-polaritons have yet to be achieved. Here we report a study of monolayer WS2 coupled to an open Fabry-Perot cavity at room-temperature, in which polariton eigenstates are unambiguously displayed. In-situ tunability of the cavity length results in a maximal Rabi splitting of ħΩRabi = 70 meV, exceeding the exciton linewidth. Our data are well described by a transfer matrix model appropriate for the large linewidth regime. This work provides a platform towards observing strongly correlated polariton phenomena in compact photonic devices for ambient temperature applications.

Room temperature observation of biexcitons in exfoliated WS2 monolayers

Abstract:Single layers of WS2 are direct gap semiconductors with high photoluminescence (PL) yield holding great promise for emerging applications in optoelectronics. The spatial confinement in a 2D monolayer together with the weak dielectric screening lead to huge binding energies for the neutral excitons as well as other excitonic complexes, such as trions and biexcitons whose binding energies scale accordingly. Here, we report on the existence of biexcitons in mechanically exfoliated WS2 flakes from 78 K up to room temperature. Performing temperature and power dependent PL measurements, we identify the biexciton emission channel through the superlinear behavior of the integrated PL intensity as a function of the excitation power density. On the contrary, neutral and charged excitons show a linear to sublinear dependence in the whole temperature range. From the energy difference between the emission channels of the biexciton and neutral exciton, a biexciton binding energy of 65-70 meV is determined.
Observation of forbidden phonons and dark excitons by resonance Raman scattering in few-layer WS_2

Abstract:The optical properties of the two-dimensional (2D) crystals are dominated by tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) and lattice vibration modes (phonons). The exciton-phonon interaction is fundamentally important to understand the optical properties of 2D materials and thus help develop emerging 2D crystal based optoelectronic devices. Here, we presented the excitonic resonant Raman scattering (RRS) spectra of few-layer WS_2 excited by 11 lasers lines covered all of A, B and C exciton transition energies at different sample temperatures from 4 to 300 K. As a result, we are not only able to probe the forbidden phonon modes unobserved in ordinary Raman scattering, but also can determine the bright and dark state fine structures of 1s A exciton. In particular, we also observed the quantum interference between low-energy discrete phonon and exciton continuum under resonant excitation. Our works pave a way to understand the exciton-phonon coupling and many-body effects in 2D materials.

Abstract:Room temperature stable excitons in layered two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a unique route for engineering light and matter interactions. Due to the strong optical dispersion near the excitonic transitions, a high refractive index arises in these ultrathin semiconductors.([1,2]) Utilizing this behavior, strongly confined Fano type optical resonances in an ultrathin (i.e., approximate to 12 nm) tungsten disulfide (WS2) photonic crystal (PhC) directly fabricated on a TMD-on-glass platform are reported. In this approach, Fano-type WS2 photonic resonances strongly couple to the WS2 excitonic dispersion engender self-resonant exciton-polaritons with an out-of-plane optical confinement exceeding that provided by surface plasmon polaritons in the visible. The large spatial light-matter overlap endowed by this unique monolithic self-coupling scheme is utilized for steering of enhanced 2D WSe2 excitonic photoluminescence in a truly TMD integrated system. It is envisioned that the strong light matter interaction on the TMD-on-glass platform will unfold the prospects of ultrathin exciton-polaritonic resonators.

Abstract:Stacking atomically thin films enables artificial construction of van der Waals heterostructures with exotic functionalities such as superconductivity, the quantum Hall effect, and engineered light-matter interactions. In particular, heterobilayers composed of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted significant interest due to their controllable interlayer coupling and trapped valley excitons in moire superlattices. However, the identification of twist-angle-modulated optical transitions in heterobilayers is sometimes controversial since both momentum-direct (K-K) and -indirect excitons reside on the low energy side of the bright exciton in the monolayer constituents. Here, we attribute the optical transition at similar to 1.35 eV in the WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer to an indirect Gamma-K transition based on a systematic analysis and comparison of experimental photoluminescence spectra with theoretical calculations. The exciton wavefunction obtained by the state-of-the-art GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach indicates that both the electron and hole of the excitons are contributed by the WS2 layer. Polarization-resolved k-space imaging further confirms that the transition dipole moment of this optical transition is dominantly in-plane and is independent of the twist angle. The calculated absorption spectrum predicts that the so-called interlayer exciton peak coming from the K-K transition is located at 1.06 eV, but with a much weaker amplitude. Our work provides new insight into the steady-state and dynamic properties of twist-angle-dependent excitons in van der Waals heterostructures. The twist-angle-modulated excitons in vertically stacked WS2/WSe2 heterobilayers are proven to be an indirect G-K intralayer transition, with a nearly in-plane transition dipole moment.
Observation of exciton redshift-blueshift crossover in monolayer WS2

Abstract:We report a rare atom-like interaction between excitons in monolayer WS2, measured using ultrafast absorption spectroscopy. At increasing excitation density, the exciton resonance energy exhibits a pronounced redshift followed by an anomalous blueshift. Using both material-realistic computation and phenomenological modeling, we attribute this observation to plasma effects and an attraction-repulsion crossover of the exciton-exciton interaction that mimics the Lennard-Jones potential between atoms. Our experiment demonstrates a strong analogy between excitons and atoms with respect to inter-particle interaction, which holds promise to pursue the predicted liquid and crystalline phases of excitons in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:The layer-by-layer buildup of a two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer to form a stack is an important development for these materials, which performs many remarkable properties in the light–matter interaction. Herein, we find clear evidence of exciton–polaritons emerging from WS 2 /hBN/WS 2 heterostructures embedded in a dielectric microcavity under optical pumping. A large Rabi splitting of 15 meV is observed at room temperature, which increases to 25 meV at 5 K. An all-dielectric Fabry–Pérot microcavity provides a simple but effective way to study the room temperature strong coupling between cavity photons and excitons. Our results pave the way for room-temperature polaritonic devices based on quantum-well van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Abstract Engineering non-linear hybrid light-matter states in tailored lattices is a central research strategy for the simulation of complex Hamiltonians. Excitons in atomically thin crystals are an ideal active medium for such purposes, since they couple strongly with light and bear the potential to harness giant non-linearities and interactions while presenting a simple sample-processing and room temperature operability. We demonstrate lattice polaritons, based on an open, high-quality optical cavity, with an imprinted photonic lattice strongly coupled to excitons in a WS 2 monolayer. We experimentally observe the emergence of the canonical band-structure of particles in a one-dimensional lattice at room temperature, and demonstrate frequency reconfigurability over a spectral window exceeding 85 meV, as well as the systematic variation of the nearest-neighbour coupling, reflected by a tunability in the bandwidth of the p-band polaritons by 7 meV. The technology presented in this work is a critical demonstration towards reconfigurable photonic emulators operated with non-linear photonic fluids, offering a simple experimental implementation and working at ambient conditions.

Large Range Manipulation of Exciton Species in Monolayer WS2

Abstract:Unconventional emissions from exciton and trion in monolayer WS2 are studied by photoexcitation. Excited by 532nm laser beam, the carrier species in the monolayer WS2 are affected by the excess electrons escaping from photoionization of donor impurity, the concentration of which varies with different locations of the sample. Simply increasing the excitation power at room temperature, the excess electron and thus the intensity ratio of excited trion and exciton can be continuously tuned over a large range from 0.1 to 7.7. Furthermore, this intensity ratio can also be manipulated by varying temperature. However, in this way the resonance energy of the exciton and trion show red-shifts with increasing temperature due to electron-phonon coupling. The binding energy of the trion is determined to be ~23meV and independent to temperature, indicating strong Coulomb interaction of carriers in such 2D materials.

Abstract:Single-layer WS$_2$ is a direct-gap semiconductor showing strong excitonic photoluminescence features in the visible spectral range. Here, we present temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements on mechanically exfoliated single-layer WS$_2$, revealing the existence of neutral and charged excitons at low temperatures as well as at room temperature. By applying a gate voltage, we can electrically control the ratio of excitons and trions and assert a residual n-type doping of our samples. At high excitation densities and low temperatures, an additional peak at energies below the trion dominates the photoluminescence, which we identify as biexciton emission.

Abstract:The photoluminescence spectra of mono- and bilayer WS2, gated by the ionic liquid, were systematically studied at 77 K. Interesting phenomena, such as a redshift of the cxciton peaks and a change in the spectral weight of the exciton, trion, and biexciton peaks, were observed at intermediate doping levels, By increasing the doping level, all the exciton, trion, and biexciton peaks vanished, which is attributed to the phase-space filling effect and the Coulomb screening effect. The variation in the band structure, which was induced by the quantum-confined Stark effect in both the mono- arid bilayer WS2, was also studied using first-principle calculations. Ultrafast Investigation of Room Temperature Valley Polarization in “optical Bilayer” WS 2

Abstract:Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have become a promising platform in valleytronics due to possessing the regulatable valley degrees of freedom. While, as a result of the rapid intervalley scattering, it is difficult to measure the PL valley polarization of monolayer TMDCs at room temperature, which limits their application in valleytronics devices. Here, we report a room temperature photoluminescence (PL) valley polarization up to 3.73% in an “optical bilayer” WS 2 formed by transferring monolayer WS 2 onto flat Ag film. Furthermore, in the transient absorption (TA) measurements, a remarkably long valley depolarization lifetime is found. Thus, we demonstrate the valley properties of such “optical bilayer” WS 2 resemble actual bilayer WS 2 , in which the robust valley polarization can be attributed to the phonons depletion effect and the blocked interlayer hopping processes. These peculiar valley features in “optical bilayer” WS 2 provide a particularly simple method to enhance valley control at room temperature.

Abstract:Solid state cavity quantum electrodynamics is a rapidly advancing field which explores the frontiers of light-matter coupling. Plasmonic approaches are of particular interest in this field, since they carry the potential to squeeze optical modes to spaces significantly below the diffraction limit1,2, enhancing light-matter coupling. They further serve as an architecture to design ultra-fast, non-linear integrated circuits with smallest footprints3. Transition metal dichalcogenides are ideally suited as the active material in such circuits as they interact strongly with light at the ultimate monolayer limit4. Here, we implement a Tamm-plasmon-polariton structure, and study the coupling to a monolayer of WSe2, hosting highly stable excitons5. Exciton-Polariton formation at room temperature is manifested in the characteristic energy-momentum dispersion relation studied in photoluminescence, featuring an anti-crossing between the exciton and photon modes with a Rabi-splitting of 23.5 meV. Creating polaritonic quasi-particles in plasmonic architectures with atomic monolayers under ambient conditions is a crucial step towards compact, highly non-linear integrated photonic and polaritonic circuits6,7.

Abstract:Strong light-matter interactions involved with photons and quasiparticles are fundamentally interesting to access the wealthy many-body physics in quantum mechanics. The emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with large exciton binding energies and strong quantum confinement allow to investigate exciton-photon coupling at elevated temperatures. Here we report room-temperature formation of Bragg polaritons in monolayer semiconductor on a dielectric mirror through the exciton-Bragg photon coupling. With the negative detuning energy of ∼ 30 meV, angle-resolved reflection signals reveal anti-crossing behaviors of lower and upper polariton branches at ±18° together with the Rabi splitting of 10 meV. Meanwhile, the strengthened photoluminescence appears in the lower polariton branch right below the anti-crossing angles, indicating the presence of the characteristic bottleneck effect caused by the slowing exciton-polariton energy relaxation towards the band minimum. The extracted coupling strength is between the ones of weak and distinct strong coupling regimes, where the eigenenergy splitting induced by the moderate coupling is resolvable but not large enough to fully separate two polaritonic components. Our work develops a simplified strategy to generate exciton-polaritons in 2D semiconductors and can be further extended to probe the intriguing bosonic characteristics of these quasiparticles, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, polariton lasing and superfluidity, directly at the material surfaces.

Observation of quantum-confined exciton states in monolayer WS2 quantum dots by ultrafast spectroscopy

Abstract:Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide quantum dots (TMDC QDs) could exhibit unique photophysical properties, because of both lateral quantum confinement effect and edge effect. However, there is little fundamental study on the quantum-confined exciton dynamics in monolayer TMDC QDs, to date. Here, by selective excitations of monolayer WS2 QDs in broadband transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy experiments, the excitation-wavelength-dependent ground state bleaching signals corresponding to the quantum-confined exciton states are directly observed. Compared to the time-resolved photophysical properties of WS2 nanosheets, the selected monolayer WS2 QDs only show one ground state bleaching peak with larger initial values for the linear polarization anisotropy of band-edge excitons, probably due to the expired spin-orbit coupling. This suggests a complete change of the band structure for monolayer WS2 QDs. In the femtosecond time-resolved circular polarization anisotropy experiments, a valley depolarization time of ∼100 fs is observed for WS2 nanosheets at room temperature, which is not observed for monolayer WS2 QDs. Our findings suggest a strong state-mixing of band-edge valley excitons responsible for the large linear polarization in monolayer WS2 QDs, which could be helpful for understanding the exciton relaxation mechanisms in colloidal monolayer TMDC QDs.
Room-Temperature Observation of Near-Intrinsic Exciton Linewidth in Monolayer WS2

Abstract:The homogeneous exciton linewidth, which captures the coherent quantum dynamics of an excitonic state, is a vital parameter in exploring light-matter interactions in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). An efficient control of the exciton linewidth is of great significance, and in particular of its intrinsic linewidth, which determines the minimum timescale for the coherent manipulation of excitons. However, such a control is rarely achieved in TMDs at room temperature (RT). While the intrinsic A exciton linewidth is down to 7 meV in monolayer WS2 , the reported RT linewidth is typically a few tens of meV due to inevitable homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects. Here, it is shown that a 7.18 meV near-intrinsic linewidth can be observed at RT when monolayer WS2 is coupled with a moderate-refractive-index hydrogenated silicon nanosphere in water. By boosting the dynamic competition between exciton and trion decay channels in WS2 through the nanosphere-supported Mie resonances, the coherent linewidth can be tuned from 35 down to 7.18 meV. Such modulation of exciton linewidth and its associated mechanism are robust even in presence of defects, easing the sample quality requirement and providing new opportunities for TMD-based nanophotonics and optoelectronics.
Strong coupling between WS$_2$ monolayer excitons and a hybrid plasmon polariton at room temperature

Abstract:Light-matter interactions in solid-state systems have attracted considerable interest in recent years. Here, we report on a room-temperature study on the interaction of tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) monolayer excitons with a hybrid plasmon polariton (HPP) mode supported by nanogroove grating structures milled into single-crystalline silver flakes. By engineering the depth of the nanogroove grating, we can modify the HPP mode at the A-exciton energy from propagating surface plasmon polariton-like (SPP-like) to localized surface plasmon resonance-like (LSPR-like). Using reflection spectroscopy, we demonstrate strong coupling between the A-exciton mode and the lower branch of the HPP for a SPP-like configuration with a Rabi splitting of 68 meV. In contrast, only weak coupling between the constituents is observed for LSPR-like configurations. These findings demonstrate the importance to consider both the plasmonic near-field enhancement and the plasmonic damping during the design of the composite structure since a possible benefit from increasing the coupling strength can be easily foiled by larger damping.
