Abstract:The crystalline structure of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) have been found to quite depend on the crystallization temperatures (T(c)s), especially in the range of 100-120 degrees C, which is usually used as the crystallization temperature for the industrial process of PLLA. The analysis of wide-angle X-ray diffraction and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy revealed that 110 degrees C is a critical temperature for PLLA crystallization. At T-c < 110 degrees C and T-c >= 110 degrees C, the alpha' and alpha crystals were mainly produced, respectively. Besides, the structural feature of the alpha'-form was illustrated, and it was found that the alpha'-form has the larger unit cell dimension than that of the a-form. Moreover, the crystallization kinetics of the alpha' and alpha crystals are different, resulting in the discontinuousness of the curves of spherulite radius growth rate (G) versus T-c and the half time in the melt-crystallization (t(1/2)) versus T-c investigated by Polarized optical microscope and Differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Abstract:The enthalpy relaxation behavior of Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) below glass transition temperature (T-g) and its effects on the mechanical properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile test. Both the enthalpy loss OH) and peak endothermic temperature (T-p) in the glass transition region show a linear increase with the logarithm of aging time (t(a)). On the basis of DSC results, the kinetics of the enthalpy relaxation process were analyzed, and the kinetic parameters of PLLA were obtained: relaxation rate of enthalpy at 40 degrees C beta(H) = 1.77 J g(-1) per decade, and apparent activation energy Delta h* = 1107 KJ mol(-1). Besides, analysis on the kinetic of enthalpy relaxation for poly(DL-lactide) (PDLLA) shows that the AV value of PDLLA is similar to that of PLLA. Moreover, it was found that the strength and modulus of PLLA increase gradually;, on the contrary, them toughness reduces dramatically during the physical aging. The yield strength and tensile modulus increased respectively 18.8% and 23.1% after being aged at 40 degrees C for 1008 h, as compared to the unaged sample. Also, the fracture strain of PLLA decreased from more than 300% to about 6% with aging at 25 degrees C for 24 h. Moreover, the fractographic examination evaluated by scanning electron microscopy showed that the fracture of PLLA changed from the "ductile" to "inductile" manner during physical aging. The drop of ductility in physical aging is correlated to the rearrangement of polymer chains from disordered to more ordered morphology.

Abstract:The effect of molecular weight (MW) on the polymorphous crystallization and melting behavior of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) were systemically studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and time-resolved Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. It was found that the polymorphism of PLLA is not influenced much by MW, and the alpha'- and a-form crystals are produced at low and high crystallization temperature (T-c), respectively, regardless of the MW. However, MW significantly affects the crystallization kinetics, and the crystallization rate reduces greatly with MW increasing. Moreover, the T-c- and MW-dependent melting behavior of PLLA was clarified with combining the DSC and FTIR results. It was found that the alpha' to alpha-crystalline phase transition occurs prior to the dominant melting in both the low- and high-MW PLLA crystallized at low T-c. Unlike the high-MW PLLA, in low-MW PLLA crystallized at low T-c, the alpha'-form crystals only partially transform into the alpha-one, and some amounts of alpha'-form crystals melt directly without transition during the heating process. With increasing T-c, the melting of PLLA with various MWs changes from the phase transition + melting mechanism to the usual melt-recrystallization mechanism.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe crystallization behavior and water vapor permeability of a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposite containing 5 wt % organic montmorillonite (OMMT) under oscillatory shear were investigated. Under the oscillatory shear, OMMT platelets exhibited a better intercalated structure and oriented along the flow direction, some of the OMMT platelets are exfoliated and dispersed in the form of single or few‐layer platelets. These well‐dispersed OMMT platelets acted as more effective nucleating and accelerating agent for the crystallization of PLA, as a result, the cold crystallization enthalpy was significantly decreased, the cold crystallization temperature was much closer to the melting temperature and the crystallinity is dramatically increased, which are observed for the first time. Moreover, the water vapor permeability is decreased by 36% due to the barrier effect of the well‐dispersed OMMT and the increased crystallinity of PLA, which increase the tortuous path that water molecules required to permeate. Abstract:Poly(lactic acid), a promising biodegradable polymer, is restricted by poor heat resistance, which is determined by the crystallization. It is important to expound the relationship between crystal structure and thermal, mechanical performance. Several PLA specimens were prepared by fully crystallized at different temperature (100 ºC, 110 ºC, 115 ºC, 120 ºC, and 130 ºC) from melt state. The morphology, crystallization behaviors, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated by polarizing optical microscope (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and Vicat softening temperature (VST), respectively. It was found that the PLA crystal shows the characterization of spherulite and many nuclei are generated at low temperature (100 ºC and 110 ºC). The nuclei gradually decrease and the spherulites grow as the crystallization temperature increases. Compared with the amorphous PLA specimens, the tensile strength of crystallized samples gradually decreases from 29.4 MPa to 25.8 MPa and the VST is improved from 51.6 ºC to 64.9 ºC. It confirms that the crystallization is an effective way to enhance the heat resistance. However, when the temperature reaches 130 ºC, the crystalline and amorphous region aggregate, forming the distinct two phases, which leads to a decrease in VST (53.2 ºC). Meanwhile, the spherulites become irregular, larger, and imperfect at high temperature, resulting in the further deterioration of mechanical performance. In addition, the molecular dynamics was further used to simulate the structural evolution during the crystallization and reveals the mechanism behind the relationship.

Abstract:This work deals with the tensile drawing behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in the amorphous state at room temperature. Nanomechanical mapping method is applied to obtain the submicrometer morphology together with mechanical properties using atomic force microscopy (AFM). By carefully collecting. the data of PLA specimens deformed with different elongation, we managed to monitor the microscopic structural/mechanical evolution simultaneously, and thus, the microscopic deformation mechanism was studied phenomenologically. The PLA matrix shows a highly heterogeneous response to the external stress. The stress is concentrated in some preferential places, thereby leading to high local Young's modulus and giving rise to crazes perpendicular to the tensile direction. However, in the position away from the crazes, the matrix undergoes no stress and shows similar Young's modulus as neat PLA specimens. The inhomogeneous stress distribution results in the catastrophic fracture of the matrix at an early state, which could explain the brittle nature of PLA at room temperature.

Abstract:The paper analyzed the effect of tensile conditions on the shape memory effect of PLA plates. The experimental results showed that the PLA plates presented excellent recovery ratio and recovery stress at lower stretch temperatures. In shape memory system of PLA, the crystal regions acted as network points significantly influenced the shape memory effect. The change of crystal structure of PLA plates at different strecthing conditions was investigated. The structural evolution model of lamallae during the stretching process were established.

Abstract:A micro-FTIR, composed by a FTIR spectrometer and an IR microscope, is adopted to probe the structural changes in both amorphous and crystalline phase during annealing and subsequent stretching of PLLA monofilament has been reported. Poly(L-lactide) (PLA) is the most promising biodegradable polymer because of its good processability, good biocompatibility, and suitable mechanical properties. Stretching. The structural transitions during stretching of a monofilament by a mini-stretcher were monitored by the above-mentioned infrared microscope at room temperature. The cold crystallization during annealing must involve the structural changes in the amorphous matrix. Common deformation characteristics are observed: under stretching both monofilaments yield first, followed by plastic flow, and finally strain hardening is brought out at large strain.

Abstract:Stereocomplex (SC) crystallization has been an effective way to improve the physical properties of polymers. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a representative stereocomplexable polymer, and PLA-based SC materials present a higher strength and modulus than the common homocrystalline one. However, physical origins for the better mechanical properties of SC materials remain unclear. In this work, we prepared PLAs with different initial crystal polymorphs [SC, homocrystal (HC), and SC/HC mixture] and investigated their multiscale structural evolutions during uniaxial stretching at different temperatures. The PLA with initial SC crystals (denoted as SC-PLA) displays a higher strength, modulus, and work of extension at fracture than the PLA with initial HC (HC-PLA), as a result of a distinct deformation mechanism. During stretching, SC-PLA shows less crystal fragmentation and its plastic deformation is driven by a lamellar rotation mechanism until failure. Meanwhile, the strain-induced oriented HC in SC-PLA helps to strengthen the polymer network. However, HC-PLA shows a typical fibrillation process while accompanied by severe cavitation upon stretching, which hinders the development of plasticity. The more effective stress transfer proposed for SC-PLA can partially explain its improved mechanical resistance over HC-PLA. In addition, mixing high amounts of HC with SC leads to a similar deformation behavior to that of HC-PLA. This study has elucidated an underlying origin for better mechanical resistance of SC materials from the chain and lamellar level.

Abstract:This study investigates the use of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer for poly(lactic acid) (PLA). PLA/PEG blend films were prepared using the solvent casting method with varying mixing ratios. The films were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and dynamic rheological analysis. The results indicate that the addition of PEG as a plasticizer affects the thermal and mechanical properties of the PLA/PEG blend films. The study found that the glass transition and cold crystallization temperatures decreased with increasing PEG content up to 20 wt%, while the crystallinity and crystallization rate increased. The blends with up to 20 wt% PEG were miscible, but phase separation occurred when the plasticizer content was increased to 30 wt%. Subsequently, amorphous samples of neat PLA and PLA plasticized with 10 wt% of PEG underwent annealing at various temperatures (Ta = 80–120 °C) for durations ta of 1 and 24 h. The samples were then analyzed using DSC and DMA. The addition of PEG to PLA altered the content of α′ and α crystalline forms compared to neat PLA at a given (Ta; ta) and favored the formation of a mixture of α′ and α crystals. The crystallinity achieved upon annealing increased with increasing Ta or ta and with the incorporation of PEG.

Abstract:The effects of molecular weight (Mw) and content of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) on the crystallization behaviors, competing crystallization of homocrystallites and stereocomplex crystallites (SCs), crystalline structure, and mechanical properties of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) blends were investigated. The crystallization of PLLA/PDLA component is accelerated after the addition of low-Mw PVAc and is suppressed with high-Mw PVAc. The ability of SC formation is enhanced via blending with PVAc, irrespective of its Mw, and becomes prominent with low-Mw PVAc. The exclusive SCs are obtained in the blends with 30 mass % low-Mw PVAc. The improvement in thermomechanical property above 170 °C is ascribed to the enhancement of SC content. This work presents guidance for achieving the melt processability of SC-PLA, thus proving their potential as a high-performance substitute for conventional plastics.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a promising biodegradable polymer alternative. Due to its high brittleness, composite materials made by melt blending thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with PLA can enhance the toughness of PLA. To understand the forced aging caused by stress relaxation in polymer materials, this study explains the stress relaxation experiments of PLA/TPU blends with different mass ratios under applied strain through mechanical model simulations. The Kelvin representation of the standard linear solid model (SLSM) is used to analyze the stress relaxation data of TPU/PLA blends, successfully explaining that the Young’s moduli (E1 and E2) of springs decrease with increasing temperature and TPU content. The viscosity coefficient of the PLA/TPU blends decreases with increasing temperature, and its reciprocal follows the Arrhenius law. For TPU/PLA blends with increased concentration of TPU, the activation energy for stress relaxation shows a linear decrease, confirmed by the glass transition point measured by DMA, indicating that it does not involve chemical reactions.

Abstract:Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer with slow crystallization rate. Oligomers of 3-hydroxybutyrate (OHB) and dendrimers of hydroxyalkanoic acids with different molecular weights were blended with PLA in a hope to improve the crystallization ability and thermal stability of PLA, respectively. Four thermally-degraded PHB products oligomers termed OHB-1, OHB-2, OHB-3, and OHB-4 with various number average molecular weights (M-n) of 4000, 7400, 14,000, and 83,000, respectively, were blended with PLA. The lower cold-crystallization temperature (T-cc) and higher heat of cold crystallization (Delta H-cc) for blend of PLA/OHB-1 suggested that thermally-degraded OHB-1 formed suitable crystal size during the cooling process and then acted as nucleation agents for PLA in the subsequent heating process. On the other hand, for the blending systems of PLA/dendrimers of hydroxyalkanoic acids, no obvious change on the thermal properties was observed compared with pure PLA except an improved PLA thermal stability possibly resulted from the crosslinking effects of the dendrimers (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermo-Mechanical Behavior and Strain Rate Sensitivity of 3D-Printed Polylactic Acid (PLA) below Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)

Abstract:This study investigated the thermomechanical behavior of 4D-printed polylactic acid (PLA), focusing on its response to varying temperatures and strain rates in a wide range below the glass transition temperature (Tg). The material was characterized using tension, compression, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), confirming PLA's strong dependency on strain rate and temperature. The glass transition temperature of 4D-printed PLA was determined to be 65 °C using a thermal analysis (DMTA). The elastic modulus changed from 1045.7 MPa in the glassy phase to 1.2 MPa in the rubber phase, showing the great shape memory potential of 4D-printed PLA. The filament tension tests revealed that the material's yield stress strongly depended on the strain rate at room temperature, with values ranging from 56 MPa to 43 MPA as the strain rate decreased. Using a commercial FDM Ultimaker printer, cylindrical compression samples were 3D-printed and then characterized under thermo-mechanical conditions. Thermo-mechanical compression tests were conducted at strain rates ranging from 0.0001 s−1 to 0.1 s−1 and at temperatures below the glass transition temperature (Tg) at 25, 37, and 50 °C. The conducted experimental tests showed that the material had distinct yield stress, strain softening, and strain hardening at very large deformations. Clear strain rate dependence was observed, particularly at quasi-static rates, with the temperature and strain rate significantly influencing PLA's mechanical properties, including yield stress. Yield stress values varied from 110 MPa at room temperature with a strain rate of 0.1 s−1 to 42 MPa at 50 °C with a strain rate of 0.0001 s−1. This study also included thermo-mechanical adiabatic tests, which revealed that higher strain rates of 0.01 s−1 and 0.1 s−1 led to self-heating due to non-dissipated generated heat. This internal heating caused additional softening at higher strain rates and lower stress values. Thermal imaging revealed temperature increases of 15 °C and 18 °C for strain rates of 0.01 s−1 and 0.1 s−1, respectively.

Abstract:Isothermal melt-crystallization, glass transition and melting behavior of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) with different molecular weights were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry. Analysis by Avrami equation showed that crystallization was initiated by heterogeneous nucleation, followed by 3-dimensional growth. The maximum reciprocal half-time of crystallization (1/t1/2) was detected at 105 °C. Double endothermic peaks were observed around the glass transition for PLLA with intermediate crystallinities, indicating the coexistence of bulk-like and confined amorphous regions. Double-melting behavior was analyzed and combined with the equilibrium melting temperature evaluation by non-linear Hoffman–Weeks extrapolation, from which a value of 207.6 °C was deduced for PLLA of infinite molecular weight. Lauritzen–Hoffman theory was employed to analyze the crystallization kinetics. Regime II-III transition was found to occur at 120 °C for PLLA of lower molecular weight. The crystal morphology was also examined by scanning electron microscopy through chemical etching method.

Abstract:This work attempts to assess the influence of process parameters on the change of mechanical properties and the degree of crystallinity of polylactide (PLA). PLA is a biodegradable material that has been widely used in various areas—from packaging, through medicine, to 3D printing, where it is used to produce prototypes. The method of processing is important, because the technological process and its parameters have a significant impact on the quality of the finished product. Their appropriate selection depends on quality and mechanical properties. The process parameters have an impact on the structure of PLA, specifically on the share of the crystalline phase, which is also important from the point of view of the functional properties of the finished product. This work assessed the impact of the technological parameters of the injection process on the final properties of the obtained samples. The obtained results of static tensile strength, hardness and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis confirm that changing these parameters affects the material properties.

Temperature and Infill Density Effects on Thermal, Mechanical and Shape Memory Properties of Polylactic Acid/Poly(-caprolactone) Blends for 4D Printing

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) blends have exhibited good shape memory properties and degradable characteristics in various 4D printing fields such as biomedicine, flexible electronics, and soft robotics, where the service temperature fluctuates easily by environment temperature and polymer characteristics. In this work, printed PLA/PCL 4D samples with different infill densities were prepared by material extrusion printing of pre-extruded filaments and characterized under different temperatures. The results show that the microstructures of printed samples are not influenced by printing process and have similar unique orientation as that of filaments. The thermal properties are stable and show obvious phase transition temperatures, while the mechanical properties decrease slightly in low temperature region and then decrease rapidly when temperature is over 60 & DEG;C. The increase in infill density can further improve the storage modulus more than 40% and have no significant influence on the thermal properties. The printed samples also exhibit good shape memory performances with fast recovery speeds less than 22 s. Furthermore, a two-step model is provided to predict the effective modulus of printed PLA/PCL samples and agrees well with experimental data. The results prove that temperature and infill density have different influences on the thermal, mechanical and shape memory properties of PLA/PCL blends.
Effect of crystallization on enhancement of mechanical property for polylactide-b-polyisoprene-b-polylactide triblock copolymers

Abstract:We have reported a mild synthesis of triblock copolymers, polylactide-block-polyisoprene-block-polylactide (termed as PLA-b-PI-b-PLA), which are environment-friendly sustainable elastomers. In this paper, the thermal stability, viscoelastic property and mechanical property for these triblock copolymers are investigated due to their application purpose and the effect of formation of PLA crystals on their mechanical property is particularly concerned with because the end blocks of these triblock copolymers are crystallizable when prepared by solvent-casting after their synthesis. Dynamic thermomechanical analysis discloses two separate glass transitions associated with sufficiently high storage moduli due to their typical phase-separated morphology with the glass transition temperature of hard glassy phase domains higher than ambient temperature. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction technique (WAXD) demonstrates that the end blocks crystallize and eventually PLA alpha-form crystals form. The variable mechanical property of triblock copolymers can be obviously enhanced by controlling crystallization of the end blocks, with the crystallized PLA domains replacing the glassy amorphous PLA domains, facilitating development of sustainable green elastomers with sufficient applicable mechanical property.
Prediction of The Mechanical Behavior of Polylactic Acid Parts with Shape Memory Effect Fabricated by FDM

Abstract:In this study, the mechanical as well as thermomechanical behaviors of shape memory PLA parts are presented. A total of 120 sets with five variable printing parameters were printed by the FDM method. The impact of the printing parameters on the tensile strength, viscoelastic performance, shape fixity, and recovery coefficients were studied. The results show that two printing parameters, the temperature of the extruder and the nozzle diameter, were more significant for the mechanical properties. The values of tensile strength varied from 32 MPa to 50 MPa. The use of a suitable Mooney-Rivlin model to describe the hyperelastic behavior of the material allowed us to gain a good fit for the experimental and simulation curves. For the first time, using this material and method of 3D printing, the thermomechanical analysis (TMA) allowed us to evaluate the thermal deformation of the sample and obtain values of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) at different temperatures, directions, and running curves from 71.37 ppm/K to 276.53 ppm/K. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed a similar characteristic of curves and similar values with a deviation of 1-2% despite different printing parameters. The glass transition temperature for all samples with different measurement curves ranged from 63-69 °C. A material crystallinity of 2.2%, considered by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), confirmed its amorphous nature. From the SMP cycle test, we observed that the stronger the sample, the lower the fatigue from cycle to cycle observed when restoring the initial shape after deformation, while the fixation of the shape did not almost decrease with each SMP cycle and was close to 100%. Comprehensive study demonstrated a complex operational relationship between determined mechanical and thermomechanical properties, combining the characteristics of a thermoplastic material with the shape memory effect and FDM printing parameters.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. The most applicable polymer in different applications is poly(lactic acid) (PLA) due its merits. This polymer attracts great interest as an environmentally friendly bioplastic polymer. The main goal of this work is to enhance the different physical properties of PLA. The melt-spun process was used to produce a continuous multifilament yarns of PLA textile fibers. The mechanical properties (tensile properties) of PLA(D600) filaments were studied. The tensile modulus and the maximum tensile strength were 3 and 0.4 GPa, respectively. The effect of the cold-drawing process on some physical properties, such as the melting temperature, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, birefringence, and orientation factor, were measured. The crystallinity values changed as the draw ratio increased, confirming the reorientations and chain packing. From the obtained results of the different physical properties, it was concluded that the drawing process has a great effect on performance of PLA fibers.
