Abstract:Uniform TiO2 nanospheres from hollow, core-shell and mesoporous structures have been synthesized using quasi-nano-sized carbonaceous spheres as templates. The TiO2 nanospheres formed after calcination at 400 °C are composed of ∼7 nm nanoparticles and the shells of the hollow TiO2 nanospheres are as thin as a single layer of nanoparticles. The ultrafine nanoparticles endow the hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres with short lithium ion diffusion paths leading to high discharge specific capacities of 211.9 and 196.0 mA h g-1 at a current rate of 1 C (167.5 mA g-1) after 100 cycles, and especially superior discharge specific capacities of 125.9 and 113.4 mA h g-1 at a high current rate of up to 20 C. The hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres also show superior cycling stability with long-term discharge capacities of 103.0 and 110.2 mA h g-1, respectively, even after 3000 cycles at a current rate of 20 C.

Abstract:A beneficial strategy for enhancing the electronic conductivity of transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) as lithium-ion battery anode material is through shortening the charge transfer path between the sulfide particles. However, the combination between the carbon-based matrix and electroactive materials is sometimes weak, which hinders the cycling stability. In this paper, the Ti-based MXene, T3C2Tx, was used as a conductive frame, combined with the ZIF-67-based CoS2/C grains yielding Ti3C2Tx/CoS2/C composite electrode through one-step and two-step synthesis methods, which displayed significantly enhanced capacity, rate performancem, and cycling stability. The compsoite reached a capacity retention of 82.6% after 100 cycles with a significantly higher capacity of 1020.5 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g current density. After 100 discharge–charge cycles, the Ti3C2Tx/CoS2/C composite revealed a low volume expansion of 9.5%, suggesting superior structural integrity and stability with the synergistic effect of both MXene 2D and CoS2/C 3D nanostructures.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Electrochemical properties of TiO2 hollow microspheres from a green and template-free route were investigated by charge–discharge, cyclic voltammograms, cycle performance, and high rate capacities measurements. The storage capacity of Li ions in the first discharge process was 290.3mAhg−1. During the successive 10 cycles, the reversible capacity stayed in the range from 290 to 130mAhg−1 with a capacity fading of 8.96% per cycle. Cyclic voltammograms measurement exhibited only a pair of reduction/oxidation peaks, indicating TiO2 hollow microspheres with a good crystalline quality was approached in this route.
TiO2 Mesoporous Microspheres with Nanorod Structure: Facile Synthesis and Superior Electrochemical Performance

Abstract:A facile solvothermal treatment without any template is employed to synthesize TiO2 mesoporous microspheres with nanorod structure. The post-calcination of the microsphere sample at 500 degrees C with carbon source leads to the formation of C-coated TiO2 with the same structure. All of the prepared samples have been characterized by the techniques of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Additionally, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm curves have been depicted to show the tunable mesopores and high specific surface area of the prepared pure and C-coated TiO2. A growth scheme is also proposed to elucidate the formation process of the mesoporous microspheres with nanorods on the surface. The electrochemical results show that both of the prepared samples have better electrochemical performance than commercial anatase TiO2 due to the nanorod and mesoporous structures, which provides direct and open channals for efficient Li+ ion diffusion. Moreover, the prepared C-coated TiO2 has superior rate property and cycling performance with specific capacity of 157.4 mAh g(-1) at 1C rate even after 200 cycles. The galvanostatic charge-discharge voltage indicates that the C-coated TiO2 with improved electronic conductivity has the broadest voltage platform comparable to Li4Ti5O12. Therefore, the C-coated TiO2 with mesoporous microspheres and nanorod structure can be an attractive candidate as functional anode materials. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:TiO2/C nanocomposites with diameter of 300−400 nm were synthesized through hydrothermal reaction from titanium glycolate spheres with glucose as carbon precursor. The effects of the glucose concentration on the morphology, structure and carbon coating and electrochemical performance of the product were investigated. When the carbon content of TiO2/C nanocomposite was 7wt%, its average crystallite size, BET surface area and average pore size were 7.1 nm, 157 m/g and 5.2 nm, respectively. When the TiO2/C nanocomposites is used as anode materials for lithium-ion battery, it delivered a capacity of 160 mAh/g after 80 charge/discharge cycles at a current rate of 0.2C with a good rate capability.

Abstract:TiO2 hollow microspheres with the shell consisting of nanotubes have been successfully synthesized via a template-free hydrothermal process and subsequent treatments. The electrochemical properties of the anatase sample have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic method. The initial Li insertion/extraction capacity at a current density of 0.2C reach 290 and 232mAhg−1 respectively. Moreover, as-prepared TiO2 delivers a reversible capacity of ca. 150mAhg−1 after 500 cycles at 1C, and it also shows superior high rate performance (e.g., 90mAhg−1 at 8C) without any modification.
Ultrathin N‐doped Carbon‐coated TiO2 Coaxial Nanofibers As Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The structural optimization of TiO2 materials has a significance for improving the electrochemical performance since TiO2 suffers from poor electronic conductivity. For this purpose, ultrathin N-doped carbon-coated TiO2 coaxial nanofibers have been designed and synthesized by a facile electrospinning approach. Microstructure analysis indicates that the TiO2 nanofibers can be coated by the ultrathin carbon layers. Electrochemical tests reveal that the rate performance and cycling ability of TiO2@C nanofibers have been enhanced obviously. The TiO2@C6 nanofibers carbonized at 600 degrees C exhibit superior features with a specific discharge capacity of 284 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles. Besides improved rate performance of 117 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 2000 mA g(-1) and excellent cycling stability with only about 0.008% capacity loss per cycle were also obtained in the sample TiO2@C6 after 500 cycles at the current density of 1000 mA g(-1). Such remarkable performance may be ascribed to the unique one-dimensional nanofibers as flexible carbon matrix.
Synthesis and high lithium electroactivity of rutile TiO2@C nanorods

Abstract:Rutile TiO2 nanorods were synthesized by surfactant assisted thermal hydrolysis of TiCl4 in an acidic solution. A uniform thin layer of carbon coating on the TiO2 nanorods was formed by in-situ reduction of carbon precursor molecules. The resulting TiO2@C nanorods were subjected to electrochemical measurements for testing their lithium electroactivity. The TiO2@C nanorods show a reversible capacity of ~220 mA h g-1 at C/5 and ~185 mA h g-1 at 1C, which are much better than those with bare TiO2 nanorods and commercial P25 nanoparticles measured under the same conditions. The significantly enhanced reversible capacity and rate capability evinces the dramatic increase of the average electron conductivity and structural stability of the anode composite material due to the thin carbon coating layer.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is of great interest as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its safety, structure stability, and low cost. However, the limitations of low conductivity and small theoretical capacity prevent its further applications. Herein, TiO2 nanospheres with a hollow structure (H-TiO2) were successfully synthesized via a hard-template method. The resultant material used as LIBs anode with superior lithium storage properties in terms of high initial capacity (∼289 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), good rate capability (∼101 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1), and excellent cycling stability (∼196 mA h g−1 was retained over 300 cycles at 0.1 A g−1). The improved performances are attributed to the large specific area (~225 m2 g−1) and abundant mesoporous of the hollow structure, which can not only promote the diffusion of Li+ and e− but also achieve an increase in the contact area between electrodes and electrolyte.

Abstract:LiTiO@C/CNT microspheres, wherein CNTs were firmly anchored to LiTiO@C nanoparticles, were prepared a facile spray drying method and subsequently annealed in an argon atmosphere, exhibiting long cycling stability (charge/discharge capacities of 85.45/86.18 mA h g after 500 cycles at 500 mA g) and excellent rate capability (charge capacity of 61.16 mA h g after 10 cycles at 1000 mA g). The special spherical structure design is not only beneficial to improving the structural stability and reaction kinetics of the electrode materials during the long-term extraction-insertion of sodium ions but also supplies numerous interfacial sites to store more sodium ions.
CNTs in Situ Attached to Α-Fe2o3 Submicron Spheres for Enhancing Lithium Storage Capacity

Abstract:In this work, we developed a facile hydrothermal method for synthesis of hybrid α-Fe2O3-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) architectures (α-Fe2O3-CNTs-1 and α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2). The CNTs are in situ attached to the α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres and form three-dimensional network robust architectures. The increase in the amount of CNTs in the network α-Fe2O3-CNTs architectures will significantly enhance the cycling and rate performance, as the flexible and robust CNTs could ensure the fast electron transport pathways, enhance the electronic conductivity, and improve the structural stability of the electrode. As for pure α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres, the capacity decreased significantly and retained at 377.4 mAh g(-1) after 11 cycles, and the capacity has a slightly increasing trend at the following cycling. In contrast, the network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 electrode shows the most remarkable performance. At the 60th cycle, the capacity of network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 (764.5 mAh g(-1)) is 1.78 times than that of α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres (428.3 mAh g(-1)). The long-term cycling performance (1000 cycles) of samples at a high current density of 5 C showed that the capacity of α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres fade to ∼37.3 mAh g(-1) at the 400th cycle and gradually increased to ∼116.7 mAh g(-1) at the 1000th cycle. The capacity of network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 maintained at ∼220.2 mAh g(-1) before the 400th cycle, arrived at ∼326.5 mAh g(-1) in the 615th, cycle and retained this value until 1000th cycle. The network α-Fe2O3-CNTs-2 composite could significantly enhance the cycling and rate performance than pure α-Fe2O3 submicron spheres composite.

Abstract:We present a two-step method to optimize the nanoporous characteristics of TiO2 samples thus enabling a higher charge and discharge capacity and a larger rate capability compared to dense TiO2 materials. We use a simple sol-gel process to fabricate spherical titanium glycolates precursors followed by subsequent hydrothermal or annealing treatments resulting, respectively, in highly porous or dense TiO2 nanospheres. These processes enable control of the grain size, pore structure, and specific surface area of the TiO2. The fabricated TiO2 nanostructures have been subsequently used to assemble lithium-ion batteries. Galvanostatic discharge-charge tests indicate that the porous TiO2 nanospheres possess high and stable reversible capacity of 229, 133, and 56 mAh g(-1) at 0.06, 0.6 and 6C, respectively; whereas the corresponding values for dense TiO2 nanospheres are 217, 45, and similar to 1 mAh g(-1). Such considerable improvement of the electrochemical activity is attributed to the porous TiO2 nanostructures, and subsequent change in diffusion length, and enables the possibility to optimize the high rate capability in TiO2-based lithium-ion batteries. Abstract:In2O3/C core-shell nanospheres have been synthesized via template-free hydrothermal approach at 200 degrees C first, then treated in glucose aqueous solution and annealed at 500 degrees C. The products were around 100 nm in dimension with carbon shell about 10 nm in thickness. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the In2O3/C core-shell nanospheres had an initial discharge capacity as high as 1607 mAh g(-1) and the discharge capacity of 569 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at 0.1 C. Moreover, the products showed the discharge capacities of 578, 361, 279, 173 mAh g(-1) at the rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 C, respectively.

Abstract:A novel spatial confinement strategy based on a carbon/TiO2 /carbon sandwich structure is proposed to synthesize TiC nanoparticles anchored on hollow carbon nanospheres (TiC@C) through a carbothermal reduction reaction. During the synthesis process, two carbon layers not only serve as reductant to convert TiO2 into TiC nanoparticles, but also create a spatial confinement to suppress the aggregation of TiO2 , resulting in the formation of well-dispersed TiC nanoparticles. This unique TiC@C structure shows an outstanding long-term cycling stability at high rates owing to the strong physical and chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfides (i.e., a high capacity of 732.6 mA h g-1 at 1600 mA g-1 ) and it retains a capacity of 443.2 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles, corresponding to a decay rate of only 0.0395 % per cycle. Therefore, this unique TiC@C composite could be considered as an important candidate for the cathode material in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Trivalent titanium doped titania/carbon (TiO2–x/C) composite microspheres have been prepared by a facile aerosol method (ultrasonic spray pyrolysis) using titanium (IV) bis(ammonium lactato)dihydroxide (TiBALDH) as the sole precursor. The obtained TiO2–x/C microspheres have particle sizes in the range of 400–1,000 nm. When evaluated as anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), they provide a high reversible capacity of 286 mA·h·g−1 with good cycling performance. A capacity of 249 mA·h·g−1 can be achieved after 180 cycles at 50 mA·g−1, which is more than three times higher than that of white TiO2 microspheres (77 mA·h·g−1). The superior sodium storage performance of these TiO2–x/C composite microspheres can be attributed to the simultaneous introduction of Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies, ultrafine grain size, as well as the conductive carbon matrix. This study provides a facile and effective approach for the production of TiO2–x/C nanocomposites with superior sodium storage performance.
Insights into the Li+ Storage Mechanism of TiC@C-TiO2 Core-Shell Nanostructures As High Performance Anodes

Abstract:Titanium carbide @ carbon-doped titanium dioxide (TiC@C-TiO2) core-shell nanostructures are designed, prepared and demonstrated for the application in lithium ion battery anode. Synthesis of these specific core-shell nanostructures is achieved via a facile, novel, and one-pot approach using oxidative growth of C-TiO2 onto TiC nanoparticles, which has a higher electrochemical activity than those of pure P25 and TiC nanoparticles. The core-shell nanostructured anodes exhibit a high lithium storage capacity (352.8 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)), good rate capability (253.6 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), 158.1 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)), and outstanding cycle stability in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) (similar to 150 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) after 400 cycles), which is about 48 times and 7 times higher than that of TiO2 electrode (similar to 3.3 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and TiC (similar to 25 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)). According to the first-principle calculation, the ultrahigh capacity and cycle stability of the as-prepared anode is ascribed to the enhancement of Li+ absorption and diffusion ability through formation of C-TiO2 porous layer onto the conductive TiC particles. Moreover, the increase of electron density around the Fermi level is found to be mainly caused by the core-shell nanostructures. The results demonstrate that the presence of TiC plays an important role in providing high conductivity and the novel core-shell nanostructure can buffer the huge volume expansion and contraction during prolonged cycling, resulting in great potential applications in LIBs.

Abstract:Titanate nanotube has been widely studied in the field of photocatalysis, sensors, and solar cells owing to its open layered channel and large surface area, and it exhibits large discharge/charge capacity, enhanced rate and cycle performance when used in Li-ion batteries. In this study, titanate nanocluster was synthesized using TiO2 center dot nH(2)O as titanium source. The as-synthesized titanate nanocluster exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 425.6 mAh/g and still keeps a stable cycling discharge capacity of 115 mAh/g after 3000 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA/g with the coulombic efficiency of about 100%. These results show that the as-synthesized sample has better electrochemical properties than that synthesized from commercial TiO2 powders, and it can be used as a promising anode material for high-power and long-life Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:TiO2 is well‐known nanomaterials and mostly used as solid nanoparticles, and normal hollow spheres for photocatalysts or electrode materials. In this study, a novel self‐templated method is presented to successfully fabricate high‐surface‐area ultrathin nanosheets constructed TiO2 hollow spheres through the solvothermal treatment of the titanate–silicone composite particles combined with calcination. The uniquely structured hollow spheres exhibit excellent rate capability and good cycle stability even at a high current density of ≈10 C for the anode material of Li‐ion battery.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a facile route to fabricate carbon and Au treated TiO2 mesoporous hollow spheres (MHTiO2@C-Au) as high performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The high porosity of the hollow spheres, together with the inner carbon supporting and superficial Au coating, enhanced the cycling stability and rate performance of the MHTiO2@C-Au electrode significantly. The MHTiO2@C-Au cemposite exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 186.6 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at the current density of 1.0C, superior rate performances of around 151.0 mA h g(-1) at the current rate of 5.0C. The outstanding electrochemical property is attributed to the overall structural features of the MHTiO2@C-Au, which can not only shorten the diffusion path of lithium ions and electrons, but also improve the stability of the hollow structures during the lithium ion insertion and extraction process. Carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12–TiO2 Microspheres As Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:While spinel Li4Ti5O12 has attracted great attention owing to its excellent cycling stability and safety as anode materials of lithium ion batteries, there is still a challenge to produce high-performance Li4Ti5O12 with a cost-effective and scalable process. Herein, we developed a facile one-pot strategy for scalable synthesis of carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12–TiO2 microspheres. The novel material not only delivered a high capacity of 162.5 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C but also exhibited excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The capacity of up to 146.6 mA h g−1 was retained after 350 cycles at 5 C, and no obvious capacity reduction was found during cycles. The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed primarily to the uniform carbon layer outside and the high density of grain boundary in the compact microspheres, resulting in enhanced electrical conductivity and more channels for lithium ion insertion/extraction reaction.
