Abstract:Using the solid-state reaction method, Ce3+,Tb3+-coactivated Si5AlON7 (Si6-zAlzOzN8-z, z=1) phosphors were successfully synthesized. The obtained phosphors exhibit high absorption and strong excitation bands in the wavelength range of 240-440nm, matching well with the light emitting-diode (LED) chip. The ET from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ has been studied and demonstrated by the luminescence spectra and decay curves. Moreover, the phosphors show tunable emissions from blue to green by tuning the relative ratio of the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. Thermal quenching properties of Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ had also been investigated and the quenching temperature is similar to 190 degrees C. These results show that Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ could be a promising candidate for a single-phased color-tunable phosphor applied in UV-chip pumped LEDs.
A Novel Tunable Blue-Green-emitting CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce3+,Tb3+ Phosphor Via Energy Transfer for UV-excited White LEDs

Abstract:CaGdGaAl2O7 and CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) have been synthesized by a traditional solid state reaction for the first time. The Rietveld refinement confirmed that CaGdGaAl2O7 has a tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4[combining macron]21m. The photoluminescence properties show that the obtained phosphors can be efficiently excited in the range from 330 to 400 nm, which matches perfectly with commercial UV LED chips. A tunable blue-green emitting CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) phosphor has been obtained, by codoping Ce(3+) and Tb(3+) ions into the host and varying their relative ratios, and may be a good candidate for blue-green components in UV white LEDs. The luminescence properties and lifetimes reveal an efficient energy transfer from the Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) ions. The energy transfer is demonstrated to be a dipole-quadrupole mechanism, and the critical distance for Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) calculated by the concentration quenching is 12.25 Å.

Abstract:A series of Ce3+,Eu2+ co-doped Li2BaSiO4 cyan-green phosphors were synthesized by a high temperature solid phase method. The crystal structure, morphology, luminescent properties and temperature characteristics of the corresponding samples were systematically studied. The main peaks of the emission spectra of Li2BaSiO4:Ce3+,Eu2+ were shifted from 400 nm to 500 nm by adjusting the Ce3+,Eu2+ co-doping concentration. And a series of phosphors with continuous changes from blue to cyan green were obtained, which effectively compensated for the gap between the white LED at 470-510 nm region. The energy transfer efficiency and mechanism of Ce3+,Eu2+ in Li2BaSiO4 were studied by fluorescence lifetime. The highest energy transfer efficiency was 46.01%, and the energy transfer mechanism was determined to be electric dipole-electric dipole transition. Finally, fabricating a white LED device which coated blue, green-yellow, red and as-prepared cyan phosphors on the surface of ultraviolet chip (350 nm), and the device exhibited excellent luminescence characteristics (Ra = 95.2, CCT = 3105 K). The results show that the Li2BaSiO4:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphor developed can be regard as single-component tunable color luminescent materials under the excitation of near ultraviolet light.

Abstract:Phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs), with high luminous efficiency, low energy consumption, extended lifetime, and eco-friendly nature, have revolutionized various industries. Among them, an alkaline earth silicate-based phosphor host, Na4CaSi3O9, shows good crystal structure stability and flexible properties for diverse application. Here, Ce3+/Li+ singly doped and Ce3+/Li+/Tb3+ co-doped Na4CaSi3O9 phosphors are fabricated by the standard solid-state reaction approach. The Ce3+/Li+-activated phosphors show strong absorption within 200-400 nm and exhibit a blue emission centered at 423 nm. The quenching concentration of Ce3+ appears at x = 0.05 and can be attributed to the dipole-quadrupole interaction. When Tb3+ ions are co-doped, the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphor emission can be adjusted from blue to green under the irradiation of 365 nm through the dipole-dipole interaction induced energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions with a maximum value of 28.32%. This study highlights the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphors as a new and efficient material for w-LED applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of novel color tunable phosphors BaY2Si3O10:Ce3+,Tb3+ have been synthesized by the solid-state reaction. The crystalline structure, photoluminescence properties, lifetimes and luminous efficiency were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence spectroscopy and quantum yield measurement system. The decay mode of Ce3+ confirms that the energy transfer occurred in BaY2Si3O10:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors, and the intense green emission is realized in BaY1.10Si3O10:0.05Ce3+,0.85Tb3+ on the base of high efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ with an efficiency of 70%. The quantum yield of BaY1.10Si3O10:0.05Ce3+,0.85Tb3+ is 81.6%. The CIE coordinates are tuned from deep blue (0.156, 0.098) to green (0.294, 0.562) by adjusting the concentration of Tb3+. Those results indicate that the BaY2Si3O10:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors would be a promising candidate as an ultraviolet convertible phosphor for light emitting devices due to its efficient green emission.

Abstract:Nanorod-like Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH): xEu 3+ , yTb 3+ (x + y = 12 mol%) phosphors with multicolor tunable emission were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and luminescent properties of samples were studied by XRD, EDS, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and PL. The luminescent results demonstrate the existence of energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in the Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ co-doped sample, and the energy transfer mechanism from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ in the phosphors were studied. When appropriately modulating the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ doping concentration, various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from yellow-green, yellow, and orange to red through single excitation energy.

Abstract:Emission-tunable La 9.33 Si 6 O 26 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Sm 3+ (LS:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Sm 3+ ) phosphors were designed by solid-state reaction for different applications. Their photoluminescence (PL) properties under ultraviolet light excitation were studied in detail. The single-phase structures were determined by the XRD patterns. The PL spectra of the Ce 3+ -activated samples exhibited broad luminescence bands, where two different Ce 3+ emission centers were determined. In the Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ codoped samples, an efficient energy transfer (ET) was witnessed with the spectral characteristics and decay curves. Owing to this ET, the emission color can be tuned from bluish violet to light green. When the Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ -Sm 3+ ions were tri-doped, two ET processes for Ce 3+ → Sm 3+ and Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ appeared simultaneously. As a result, the white emission was successfully achieved in the LS:0.5%Ce 3+ ,4%Tb 3+ ,3%Sm 3+ phosphor. The thermally luminescent stability revealed that the thermal quenching temperature T 0.5 of this phosphor is higher than many other reported phosphors. The device fabrication was made with the LS:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Sm 3+ phosphor, which can show visible or invisible pattern depending on the excitation light. The above investigations indicate that the developed LS:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Sm 3+ phosphors have potential applications in white LEDs and anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:High-efficiency near-UV excitable inorganic phosphors with tunable emissions are highly demanded for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and displays. In this paper, a series of color-tunable cyan-green-emitting Ca2Lu0.99-xZr2(AlO4)3:1%Ce3+,xTb3+ (CLZA:1%Ce3+,xTb3+) phosphors was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Their crystal structure, morphology, emission and excitation spectra, energy transfer properties, CIE color coordinates, internal quantum efficiency and temperature-dependent spectra were systematically researched. Impressively, these CLZA:1%Ce3+,xTb3+ phosphors showed an intense excitation band in the 370-475 nm wavelength range with a peak at 408 nm corresponding to the 4f→5d transitions of Ce3+ ions. Owing to the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions, bright cyan-to-green color-tunable emissions were obtained in CLZA:1%Ce3+,xTb3+ phosphors with an increase of the Tb3+ doping concentration, and the corresponding CIE color coordinates changed from (0.156, 0.249) to (0.341, 0.533) when the Tb3+ doping concentration increased from x = 0 to 90%. The internal quantum efficiency reached up to 69%. Moreover, temperature-dependent spectra demonstrated good thermal stability and color stability of the as-prepared Ce3+/Tb3+ doped Ca2LuZr2(AlO4)3 phosphors. In addition, a white LED device was fabricated by coating the blend of the as-prepared cyan-emitting CLZA:1%Ce3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor and commercial red phosphor CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ on a 400 nm LED chip, which exhibited bright warm-white light with CIE coordinates of (0.425, 0.376), low correlated color temperature of 2975 K and high color rendering index value of Ra = 83 and R9 = 89. These results revealed that the CLZA:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors could be excellent candidates for the application of near-UV-excited warm-white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of single-phased emission Ce3+/Tb3+-coactivated KSrY(PO4)2 (KSYP) phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The crystal structures, photoluminescence properties, fluorescence lifetimes and energy transfer of KSYP:Ce3+, Tb3+ were systematically investigated in detail. Wavelength-tunable bluish-green light could be realized by coupling the emission bands centered at 401 and 543nm ascribed to the contribution from Ce3+ and Tb3+, respectively. Intense green emission was realized in the KSrY0.59(PO4)2:0.01mol Ce3+, 0.40mol Tb3+ phosphors on the basis of the high efficiency energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ with an efficiency of over 68%. The energy transfer mechanism from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the KSYP host was ascribed to the exchange interaction. These results indicated that the KSYP:Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphors have potential applications in the field of lighting and display due to their effective excitation in the ultraviolet range.
Structural determination, energy transfer and color-tunable photoluminescence of stable LiYSiO 4 : Ce/Tb/Sm Phosphors toward n UV pumped w LEDs application

Abstract:Study on photon emission of Ce 3+ -doped phosphors is essential for advanced optoelectronic application. However, it remains quite difficult to design near-ultraviolet excitable Ce 3+ -activated silicate blue/cyan-emitting phosphors because of the combined influence of iconicity of Ce 3+ , crystal field strength, and nephelauxetic effect. Herein, Ce 3+ incorporated into a proper host LiYSiO 4 (LYS) phosphor is mechanistically investigated and shown efficient blue/cyan photoluminescence (PL) owing to Ce 3+ 5d 1 electronic state experiencing appropriate crystal field splitting. The comprehensive analysis based on structural refinement, dynamic/static spectra, and density functional theory calculations indicates that Ce 3+ ions are energetically favored in octahedral Y site as compared with Li site in the host, resulting in attractive PL properties. According to the principle of color superposition and via cascading energy transfer (ET) from Ce 3+ → Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ , systematic PL tuning in a large color gamut is realized by further codoping with the green- and red-emissions of Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ in the phosphor LYS: Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ . The direct ET from Ce 3+ → Sm 3+ is difficult to occur due to the metal-metal charge transfer effect. Of note, the PL thermal-quenching of Ce 3+ is mainly associated with multiphonon relaxation, while the quenching of Tb 3+ / Sm 3+ is primarily due to the cross relaxation (CR) process via dipole-dipole (d-d) interaction. The appropriate distance between the two nearest adjacent Y sites in the host together with the ET are conducive to weaken the CR process of Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ , leading to high PL efficiency. Finally, a prototype pc- w LED assembled via a remote 'capping' packaging strategy and by using only the stably composition-optimized white-emitting LYS: Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ demonstrates that the phosphor is promising for high-quality of light.

Abstract:A novel colour‐tunable emitting Y10Al2Si3O18N4:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphor for n‐UV white LEDs was synthesized using a high‐temperature solid‐state reaction. The colour point of the obtained powders can be varied from blue (0.177, 0.240) to green (0.211, 0.382) by tuning the relative proportion of Ce3+/Tb3+. In the present work, a novel n‐UV convertible colour‐tunable emitting phosphor was obtained based on the efficient Ce3+‐Tb3+ energy transfer in the Y10Al2Si3O18N4 host. By properly controlling the ratio of Ce3+/Tb3+, the colour hue of the obtained powder covered the blue and green regions, under excitation of 365 nm. The steady‐state and dynamic‐state luminescence measurement was performed to shed light on the related mechanism, which was justified by the electronic dipole–quadrupole dominating the related energy transfer process. Preliminary studies showed that Y10Al2Si3O18N4:Ce3+,Tb3+ can be promising as an inorganic phosphor for white LED applications.

Abstract:A series of apatite-type Sr6Gd2Na2(PO4)(6)F-2:Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Phase structures were examined based on X-ray diffraction, the results indicated that the obtained Sr6Gd2Na2(PO4)(6)F-2:Tb3+, Eu3+ samples were well crystallized without impurity phase. The photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra and the decay curves were investigated in detail. The main energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ was verified to compliance with the dipole-quadrupole mechanism. The luminescence colors of the Sr6Gd2Na2(PO4)(6)F-2:Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors can be easily tuned from green light (0.2570, 0.3766) to white light (0.3674, 0.2813) by adjusting the proportion of Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. The investigations indicated that the Sr6Gd2Na2(PO4)(6)F-2:Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors can be used as a qualified candidate for application in white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:The alkaline-earth silicate Sr3MgSi2O8:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors have been synthesized via conventional high temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure, luminescence properties, morphology of phosphors are investigated systematically. The thermal quenching and concentration quenching mechanisms of phosphors are also discussed. The phosphors can be excited under near ultraviolet light ranging from 200 nm to 450 nm. The calcination temperature and calcination time are significant factors for luminescence property of phosphors. Increasing co-doping Tb3+ makes the emission intensity of Ce3+ decreases proportionally while the emission of Tb3+ increases. It indicates that it exists energy transfer between Ce3+ and Tb3+. The emission wavelength can be tuned from bluish violet region to blue region. The results imply Sr3MgSi2O8:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors can be a potential candidate for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:Owing to the flexible composition, superior physicochemical properties and relative low synthesis temperature, rare-earth borates have attracted considerable attention as phosphor hosts. In this work, a series of Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped KBaY(BO3)(2) samples have been synthesized via a traditional high temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure and luminescence properties, especially the energy transfer behavior from Ce3+ to Tb3+, are discussed in detail. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the KBaY(BO3)(2) host have been demonstrated to be resonant type via a dipole-dipole interaction mechanism and the critical distance of energy transfer was calculated to be 13.84 angstrom based on the concentration quenching theory. Abstract:NaCaPO4:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors were prepared by a solid-state reaction. Their luminescence properties reveal that an efficient energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions occurs, and its mechanism is a resonant type by means of a dipole-quadrupole reaction. The critical distance of the energy transfer has been calculated by concentration-quenching and spectral-overlap methods. The varied emitted color of the phosphors from blue to yellow-greenish can be achieved by properly tuning the relative ratio of Ce3+ and Tb3+ through the energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. These results indicate that NaCaPO4:Ce3+,Tb3+ is potentially useful as a highly efficient, green-emitting, UV-convertible phosphor for white-light-emitting diodes. Moreover, the accurate oscillator strength ratio of the electric quadrupole-to-dipole transitions for the Tb3+ ion was obtained to be about 10(-3), which may be of much significance in the estimate of the critical distance of the dipole-quadrupole interaction between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions through Dexter's energy-transfer theory.

Abstract:A series of Tb3+-doped Sr2YTaO6 double perovskite phosphors (SYT:Tb3+) were synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. A strong green emission was observed in the SYT:Tb3+ phosphors, and the optimal doping concentration of Tb3+ was confirmed to be 5 mol%. The electric dipole-dipole interaction was ascribed to be the main mechanism for the luminescence concentration quenching. Analysis of the concentration-dependent fluorescence decay confirmed that the self-generated quenching model holds for the dynamic process of Tb3+ decays in SYT. Furthermore, the internal quantum efficiencies, non-radiative transition rates, and energy transfer rates of the 5D4 level for the SYT:Tb3+ samples were estimated, respectively. The luminescence thermal stability of the sample was also evaluated based on the Arrhenius model. The chromaticity shift of the SYT:5 mol% Tb3+ phosphor was examined to be 0.013 when the sample temperature was increased from 303 to 483 K, thus indicating excellent chromaticity shifting resistance under high temperature conditions. Moreover, the Judd-Ofelt parameters were calculated from the emission spectra of SYT:Tb3+ to be Ω2 = 0.29 × 10-20, Ω4 = 0.45 × 10-20, and Ω6 = 0.72 × 10-20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence branching ratios and radiative transition rates for the 5D4 level were calculated based on the obtained Judd-Ofelt parameters. Finally, a white light-emitting diode (LED) prototype was assembled using a 310 nm LED chip combined with a prepared green SYT:Tb3+ phosphor and two other commercial blue and red phosphors. The obtained warm white light exhibits good chromaticity coordinates (0.32, 0.32) and a high color rendering index of 96.1. Based on the above results, it can be known that the prepared SYT:Tb3+ phosphors have a potential application as green emitting phosphors in white LEDs.

Abstract:To explore a new phosphor, Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14):Ce3+,Tb3+ and Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14):Ce3+,Mn2+ phosphors are successfully synthesized with the objective of application in ultraviolet-based light-emitting diodes. X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the samples. Under UV excitation, the energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in the Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14) host occurred mainly via a dipole-quadrupole mechanism, and the critical distances of the ion pairs (R-C) were calculated by the spectral overlap method. A bright red light emission was observed in the Ce3+ and Mn2+ codoped samples via the energy transfer from the sensitizer Ce3+ to Mn2+ ions. With an appropriate ratio of the active ion concentrations, the Ce3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+,Mn2+ codoped Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14) phosphors can generate light from the blue to green and blue to orange regions, respectively. The emission colors of the phosphors were also clarified by CIE coordinates briefly.

Abstract:A novel color tunable phosphor was developed by a high-temperature solid-state reaction route with apatite-type Ca8NaGd(PO4)6F2 (CNGF) as matrix for the doping with Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The crystal structures were studied by XRD and Rietveld refinement, which clarified the structural parameters and the occupation of doped ions in crystal lattice. The luminescent intensity of Tb3+ ions was significantly improved by the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. According to the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+, a possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed. Fluorescent paper was prepared by binding the CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor particles with bacterial cellulose, and the morphology and luminescence properties of the paper were investigated. These results demonstrate that the obtained CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ is a promising green phosphor candidate for solid-state lighting and anti-counterfeiting applications.
