Abstract:Palladium and copper bimetallic alloy nanoparticles immobilized onto a PDA‐coated graphene which demonstrated good catalytic activity and high turnover frequency (TOF) of 37.41 mol H2 per mol Pd−1 min−1 at 298 K, a low activation energy (Ea) of 47.97 kJ mol−1, these metrics were superior to that of Pd−Cu/RGO nanocatalysts. The tight anchoring of alloy nanoparticles also enabled excellent cyclic stability, 67.7 % of its initial catalytic activity could be maintained after ten cycles. The current work demonstrates the potential of Pd−Cu/PDA/RGO in active and durable ammonia borane hydrolysis for hydrogen production. Palladium (Pd), copper (Cu) bimetallic alloy nanoparticles immobilized onto a PDA‐coated graphene support (Pd−Cu/PDA/RGO) hybrid was synthesized through co‐reduction of K2PdCl4 and Cu(NO3)2. The Pd to Cu ratio was rationally controlled to obtain the optimum Pd−Cu/PDA/RGO catalyst. The as‐prepared catalyst demonstrated good catalytic activity for hydrogen production by hydrolysis of ammonia borane, high turnover frequency (TOF) of 37.41 mol H2 per mol Pd−1 min−1 at 298 K and a low activation energy (Ea) of 47.97 kJ mol−1 were accomplished, these metrics were superior to that of Pd−Cu/RGO nanocatalysts. The comparative results indicate that the PDA‐coated graphene (PDA/RGO) support is pivotal for the catalytic activity of Pd−Cu/PDA/RGO for hydrolysis of ammonia borane. The PDA modified onto GO surface effectively disperse the alloy particles, therefore ensure more catalytic active sites responsible for ammonia borane hydrolysis. The tight anchoring of alloy nanoparticles also enabled excellent cyclic stability, 67.7 % of its initial catalytic activity could be maintained after ten cycles. The current work demonstrates the potential of Pd−Cu/PDA/RGO in active and durable ammonia borane hydrolysis for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Pt-M alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with well-defined size and compositions exhibit dramatically catalytic performance in chemical reactions. In this work, monodisperse PtCu NPs with controlled size and compositions were synthesized by the co-reduction method in the presence of oleylamine. These NPs have excellent catalytic activities in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) and their activities were composition dependent. Among the different-composition PtCu NPs, the CusoPtso NPs exhibit the highest catalytic activity with an initial turnover frequency of 102.5 mol((hydrogen)) . mol((catalyst))(-1) . min(-1) and an apparent activation energy of 36 kJ.mol(-1), which demonstrate the validity of partly replacing Pt by a first-row transition metal on constructing high performance heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB. Abstract:Bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) functionalized SBA-15 for the first time by a facile co-reduction method. These catalysts were applied in the decomposition of formic acid. The dehydrogenation of formic acid is dependent on the composition of AgPd and the content of carbon nitride (CN). Among all of the AgPd/mCND/SBA-15 catalysts tested, the Ag10Pd90/0.2CND/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits highly superior performance for the decomposition of formic acid into high-quality hydrogen at 323 K with 100% hydrogen selectivity and a turnover frequency of 893 h(-1), which is among the maximum values obtained at 323 K in this paper. The improved performance is a promising step towards the utilization of formic acid as a hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) is considered to be a promising solid hydrogen carrier. In this work, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP)-protected platinum nanoparticles are supported on γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS) modified silica spheres (Pt-PVP/SiO2(M)), which are firstly used as highly efficient catalysts for hydrolysis of AB. Platinum nanoparticles possess a tiny size of 2–3 nm and are uniformly dispersed over modified silica spheres. Pt-PVP/SiO2(M) catalysts with a Pt loading amount of 1.30 wt% show the highest catalytic activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 371 molH2 molPt−1 min−1 (866 molH2 molPt−1 min−1 corrected for the surface atoms) at 25 °C. The activation energy is calculated to be 46.2 kJ/mol. Furthermore, owing to the synergistic effect between the modifier of silica spheres and the capping agent of metal nanoparticles, Pt-PVP/SiO2(M) catalysts have a higher loading amount (8.7 and 6.5 times) and TOF value (4.8 and 5.5 times) than the counterparts prepared without γ-MPS and PVP, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, monodisperse palladium (Pd) nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surfaces were successfully prepared by a "wet" and "clean" method in aqueous solution. Without any surface treatment, Pd nanoparticles are firmly attached to the RGO sheets. These RGO/Pd nanocomposites exhibited catalytic activity in hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB). Their hydrolysis completion time and activation energy were 12.5 min and 51 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), respectively, which were comparable to the best Pd-based catalyst reported. The TOF values (mol of H-2 x (mol of catalyst x min)(-1)) of RGO/Pd is 6.25, which appears to be one of the best catalysts reported so far. We also obtained a B-11 NMR spectrum to investigate the mechanism of this catalytic hydrolysis process. This simple and straightforward method is of significance for the facile preparation of metal nanocatalysts with high catalytic activity on proper supporting materials.
Nanostructured Ni2P As a Robust Catalyst for the Hydrolytic Dehydrogenation of Ammonia–Borane

Abstract:Ammonia-borane (AB) is a promising chemical hydrogen-storage material. However, the development of real-time, efficient, controllable, and safe methods for hydrogen release under mild conditions is a challenge in the large-scale use of hydrogen as a long-term solution for future energy security. A new class of low-cost catalytic system is presented that uses nanostructured Ni2 P as catalyst, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and high sustainability toward hydrolysis of ammonia-borane with the initial turnover frequency of 40.4 mol(H2) mol(Ni2P) (-1) min(-1) under air atmosphere and at ambient temperature. This value is higher than those reported for noble-metal-free catalysts, and the obtained Arrhenius activation energy (Ea =44.6 kJ mol(-1) ) for the hydrolysis reaction is comparable to Ru-based bimetallic catalysts. A clearly mechanistic analysis of the hydrolytic reaction of AB based on experimental results and a density functional theory calculation is presented.

Abstract:The design of robust and highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis is of great importance to realize its application in energy storage. Herein, bimetallic ultrafine PtPd nanoparticles (NPs), supported on NH2-functionalized and N-doped reduced grapheme oxide (NH2-N-rGO), were prepared by a simple and effective method under mild condition. The introduction of the -NH2-N group on rGO is the critical issue for the formation of the ultrafine and well-dispersed bimetallic PtPd NPs (1.9 nm) with relatively large surface area and enough active sites. These catalysts have excellent catalytic activities in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB and their activity was composition dependent. Among these catalysts, the Pt0.5Pd0.5/NH2-N-rGO composite catalysts exhibit the highest catalytic activity with an initial turnover frequency of 699.6 mol((hydrogen))center dot mol((catalyst))(-1)center dot min(-1)for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB. This work offers a new way for the design and preparation of the bimetallic ultrafine nanocatalysts with excellent catalytic activities for AB hydrolysis.

Abstract:Although remarkable advances are achieved in the development of novel and high-efficiency catalytic systems for H2 production from the decomposition of dimethylamineborane in neat organic media, there are few available reports on H2 production upon dimethylamineborane hydrolysis. Hence, it is still of high importance to design and develop efficient and highly selective catalysts for H2 production upon dimethylamineborane hydrolysis. Herein, we have first designed and synthesized a series of carbon nanosphere (CNS)-supported PtNi bimetallic nano hybrids (PtNi/CNS), by immobilization of nearly monodispersed PtNi bimetallic nanoparticles at the surface of CNSs, for the highly selective and efficient H2 production from dimethylamineborane hydrolysis. Among them, the optional Pt0.7Ni0.3/CNS nanohybrid exhibits the highest turnover frequency of 16,607 h-1, which exceeded most reported catalytic systems, in the H2 generation from dimethylamineborane hydrolysis at 30 degrees C under 0.3 M NaOH due to the superior synergistic effect. The activation energy (Ea) of Pt0.7Ni0.3/CNS-catalyzed dimethylamineborane hydrolysis is calculated to be 31.1 kJ/mol. Interestingly, the large kinetic isotope effect of 2.76 with D2O verified that the breaking of a water O-H bond is the rate-controlling step of dimethylamineborane hydrolysis. This work presents a new, efficient, and durable Pt-based nanocatalyst for H2 production from dimethylamineborane hydrolysis.

Abstract:Efficient bimetallic nano‐catalysts consisting of both noble metals and non‐noble metals, are highly desired for the development of new hydrogen storage materials. In this work, supported Pt‐Ni nanoalloys with hollow structures were successfully synthesized using galvanic replacement method and exhibited excellent catalytic activity with a turnover frequency as high as 302.3 mol H2 ∙mol metal ‐1 ∙min ‐1 for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane. The chemical composition and structure of the alloy can be rationally controlled by the synthetic conditions, which further tune the catalytic activities of hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Hydrogen gas production can be produced from dimethylamine borane by the catalytic effect of metal nanoparticles. Past research efforts were heavily focused on dehydrogenation in organic solvents. In this study, hydrolysis of the borane in aqueous solutions was investigated, which bears two significant advantages: that two-thirds of the hydrogen generated originate from water and that the hydrogen storage materials are non-flammable. Polymer hydrogels serve as good carriers for metal particles as catalysts in aqueous solutions. Kinetic analysis of hydrogen production was performed for Ni/Pd bimetallic nanoclusters dispersed in a polymer hydrogel with a 3-D network structure. The reaction catalyzed by the bimetallic nanoclusters has an activation energy of only 34.95 kJ/mol, considerably lower than that by Ni or other metal catalysts reported. A significant synergistic effect was observed in the Ni/Pd bimetallic catalysts (Ni–Pd = 20/1) with a higher activity than Pd or Ni alone. This proves the alloy nature of the nanoparticles in the borane hydrolysis and the activation of water and borane by both metals to break the O–H and B–H bonds. The hydrogel with the Ni/Pd metal can be recycled with a much longer lifetime than all the previously prepared catalysts. The aqueous borane solutions with a polymer hydrogel can become a more sustainable hydrogen supplier for long-term use.

Palladium nanoparticles supported on cobalt(II,III) oxide nanocatalyst: High reusability and outstanding catalytic activity in hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane

Abstract:A new palladium(0) nanocatalyst is developed to enhance the catalytic efficiency of precious metal catalysts in hydrogen generation from the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane. Magnetically separable Pd0/Co3O4 nanocatalyst can readily be obtained by the reduction of palladium(II) cations impregnated on cobalt(II, III) oxide at room temperature. The obtained Pd0/Co3O4 nanocatalyst with 0.25% wt. palladium loading has outstanding catalytic activity with a record turnover frequency of 3048 min-1 in the releasing H2 from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane at 25.0 °C. They also provide outstanding reusability even after the tenth run of the hydrolysis of ammonia borane at 25.0 °C. The high activity and superb stability of magnetically isolable Pd0/Co3O4 nanoparticles are attributed to the favorable interaction of palladium with the surface of reducible cobalt oxide.
Ultrafine Ni-MoOx Nanoparticles Anchored on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheets: A Highly Efficient Noble-Metal-Free Catalyst for Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Abstract:The development of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB, NH3BH3) is still a challenging technology. Herein, ultrafine MoOx-doped Ni nanoparticles (~3.0 nm) were anchored on g-C3N4@glucose-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets via a phosphate-mediated method. The strong adsorption of phosphate-mediated nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (PNCS) for metal ions is a key factor for the preparation of ultrasmall Ni nanoparticles (NPs). Notably, the alkaline environment formed by the reduction of metal ions removes the phosphate from the PNCS surface to generate P-free (P)NCS so that the phosphate does not participate in the subsequent catalytic reaction. The synthesized Ni-MoOx/(P)NCS catalysts exhibited outstanding catalytic properties for the hydrolysis of AB, with a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of up to 85.7 min-1, comparable to the most efficient noble-metal-free catalysts and commercial Pt/C catalyst ever reported for catalytic hydrogen production from AB hydrolysis. The superior performance of Ni-MoOx/(P)NCS can be ascribed to its well-dispersed ultrafine metal NPs, abundant surface basic sites, and electron-rich nickel species induced by strong electronic interactions between Ni-MoOx and (P)NCS. The strategy of combining multiple modification measures adopted in this study provides new insights into the development of economical and high-efficiency noble-metal-free catalysts for energy catalysis applications.

Abstract:Ammonia borane ( AB) has been considered as one of the most attractive candidates for chemical hydrogen-storage materials; it is highly desirable but still remains a huge challenge to design and develop highly active robust non-noble-metal catalysts for on-demand hydrogen generation from AB. In this work, we demonstrate that a Ni2P nanosheet array integrated on 3D Ni foam is highly active and robust for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB. This monolithic catalyst behaves as an on/off switch for on-demand hydrogen generation with a large initial turnover frequency of 42.3 mol(H-2) mol(Ni2P)(-1) min(-1) and a lower activation energy of 44.0 kJ mol(-1) under ambient conditions, outperforming all reported Ni-based noble-metal-free catalysts and some noble-metal catalysts.

Abstract:Developing an efficient catalyst for hydrogen (H2) generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) to significantly improve the activity for the hydrogen generation from AB is important for its practical application. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure composed of uniformly dispersed 2P core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedron (2P/N–CNP) through a carbonization-phosphidation strategy derived from ZIF-67. Benefiting from the electronic effect of P doping, high dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between 2P and N-CNTs, the 2P/N–CNP catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance towards the hydrolysis of AB for hydrogen generation, affording a high TOF value of 18.4 mol H2 mol metal−1 min−1 at the first cycle. This work provides a promising lead for the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts towards convenient H2 generation from hydrogen-rich substrates in the close future.

Abstract:Catalytic ability of bi-metal hybrid nanoagents largely depends on their phase constitution and morphology, also bearing a close correlation to the fabrication process. We herein design and develop a modified polyol protocol with inorganic ion induction for rationally constructing Ag nanoagents with tunable shapes (nanowire, nanocube, and nanoparticle), followed by evenly anchoring of stepwise reduced Pd nanograins on the surface of Ag nanoagents to foster Ag core - Pd shell (i.e. Pd@Ag) nanosized heterostructure. A home-made photochemical reaction device is used to scientifically evaluate the catalytic ability of the Pd@Ag nanoagents on hydrolyzing ammonia borane to evolve hydrogen gas. The ample characterization reveals that the fabricated Ag nanoagents hold the expected regular and uniform shapes, with 10–15 nm thick Pd layer cladded on their surfaces. The particular shapes of the Ag nanoagents can be duly manipulated via the induction of inorganic ions, and the thickness and compactness of the Pd shell can also be suitably regulated by controlling reduction duration. The verified formation of electron synergistic effect among the both metals is favorable to elevate the catalytic ability. The bimetal Pd@Ag nanoagents perform the superior catalytic activity under visible light irradiation, far exceeding that of the respective monometal counterparts, with the order of catalytic activity: Pd@Ag-NWs > Pd@Ag-NCs > Pd@Ag-NPs. The hydrolysis reaction at the given conditions is confirmed to be quasi first-order reaction, with the apparent activation energy of 53.44 kJ·mol−1 and TOF value of 47.04 min−1. The Pd@Ag-NWs catalyst behaves satisfactory stability, with 87.8 % initial catalytic activity retained after five cyclic use.

Abstract:Efficient non-precious metal catalysts are crucial for hydrogen production from borohydride compounds in aqueous media via hydrogen atoms in water. A method for preparing magnetic polymer nanoparticles is developed in this study based on the chemical deposition of nickel onto hydrophilic polymer nanogels. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic and XPS analyses show that Ni exists mainly in the form of NiO in nanogels. Excellent catalytic activities of the nanoparticles are demonstrated for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of dimethylamine-borane and sodium borohydride in which the initial TOF (turn-over frequencies) are 376 and 1919 h(-1), respectively. Kinetic studies also reveal an Arrhenius activation energy of 50.96 kJ mol(-1) for the hydrolysis of dimethylamine-borane and 47.82 kJ mol(-1) for the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, which are lower than those catalyzed by Ru metal. Excellent reusability and the use of water for hydrogen production from dimethylamine-borane provide the additional benefit of using a hybrid catalyst. Abstract:Mesoporous multimetal oxide microspheres (Ni-Ce-Al-O) with tuned and uniformly distributed composition are prepared through an aerosol-assisted self-assembly approach and further used as catalysts for ammonia decomposition. The as-prepared and spent materials are characterized by various techniques including ex situ/in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), scanning electron microscope (SEM)/transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N-2-adsorption. The tricomponent Ni-Ce-Al-catalysts show great superiority over pure NiO or bicomponent catalysts (Ni-Ce-O and Ni-Al-O) in both catalytic activity and durability. By using H-2-TPR combined with in situ XRD, we have identified metallic Ni-0 as the active crystalline phase and further confirmed the strong interaction between alumina and other components. This strong interaction helps suppress the growth of both metallic Ni-0 as active site and ceria as promoter under the harsh catalytic conditions (high temperature and reducing atmosphere) and thus improves the activity and stability simultaneously.
Ultrafine RhNi Nanocatalysts Confined in Hollow Mesoporous Carbons for a Highly Efficient Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Borane

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) has received growing research interest as one of the most promising hydrogen-storage carrier materials. However, fast dehydrogenation of AB is still limited by sluggish catalytic kinetics over current catalysts. Herein, highly uniform and ultrafine bimetallic RhNi alloy nanoclusters encapsulated within nitrogen-functionalized hollow mesoporous carbons (defined as RhNi@NHMCs) are developed as highly active, durable, and selective nanocatalysts for fast hydrolysis of AB under mild conditions. Remarkable activity with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 1294 molH2 molRh-1 min-1 and low activation energy (Ea) of 18.6 kJ mol-1 is observed at room temperature, surpassing the previous Rh-based catalysts. The detailed mechanism studies reveal that when catalyzed by RhNi@NHMCs, a covalently stable O-H bond by H2O first cleaves in electropositive H* and further attacks B-H bond of AB to stoichiometrically produce 3 equiv of H2, whose catalytic kinetics is restricted by the oxidation cleavage of the O-H bond. Compositional and structural features of RhNi@NHMCs result in synergic electronic, functional, and support add-in advantages, kinetically accelerating the cleavage of the attacked H2O (O-H bond) and remarkably promoting the catalytic hydrolysis of AB accordingly. This present work represents a new and effective strategy for exploring high-performance supported metal-based alloy nanoclusters for (electro)catalysis.
