Abstract:The hydrolysis of AB has been regarded as a kind of secure and efficient method for hydrogen generation. However, the development of economical and stable catalysts with high catalytic activities remains a bottleneck for realizing further industrial application of AB. Herein, high-loading heterostructured Ni/NiO nanoparticles with different Ni/NiO weight ratios anchored on one-dimensional porous MoOx nanorods (denoted as Ni/NiO@ MoOx) have been synthesized and introduced into the hydrolysis of AB for the first time. The Ni/NiO@MoOx-50H catalyst (synthesized under the reduction atmosphere of 50% H-2/50% Ar) with an optimal Ni/NiO weight ratio (73.96/26.04) exhibits an excellent catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of AB with the turnover frequency (TOF) value reaching 86.29 molH(2) molNi(-1) min(-1) at 298 K, which is one of the highest TOF values among the reported non-noble metal catalysts. In addition, on account of high Ni loading weight (29.15 wt %), the hydrogen generation rate of Ni/NiO@MoOx-50H achieves 10,478 mL.min(-1) g(-1) (35,947 mL.min(-1) gNi(-1)), overtaking most values both in noble and non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrolysis of AB. The bridging effect of NiO steadily connects the Ni and MoOx carrier and promotes great durability of Ni/NiO@ MoOx-50H, of which the catalytic activity exhibits not significant degradation in the fifth cycle. The catalysis originated from the metal/metal oxide (Ni/NiO@MoOx) provides a novel insight into the catalyst design, preparation, and application for chemical hydrogen storage systems.

Ultrafine PtCo Alloy Nanoclusters Confined in N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Spheres for Efficient Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and high-efficiency catalysts for efficient ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis is highly desirable but remains a great challenge. Ultrafine catalysts are attractive candidates in catalysis owing to abundant surface atoms. Herein, a series of ultrafine PtxCo1–x alloy nanoclusters with an average size of 1.6 nm are homogeneously anchored within the mesoporous channels of N-doped mesoporous carbon spheres (N-MCSs) through an enhanced strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) strategy. The ultrafine PtCo nanoclusters confined in N-MCSs lead to superior catalytic performance toward the AB hydrolysis reaction. Particularly, the optimal Pt0.33Co0.67/N-MCSs catalyst exhibits excellent performance toward the AB hydrolysis reaction. The results reveal that the highest specific rate achieves 4902 molH2 molPt–1 min–1, which is approximately 18 times higher than that of the monometallic Pt/N-MCSs catalyst. Mechanistic studies adopting kinetic isotope effects demonstrate that the O–H cleavage of H2O molecules is the rate-determine step in the AB hydrolysis reaction. Nanostructured Ni2P As a Robust Catalyst for the Hydrolytic Dehydrogenation of Ammonia–Borane

Abstract:Ammonia-borane (AB) is a promising chemical hydrogen-storage material. However, the development of real-time, efficient, controllable, and safe methods for hydrogen release under mild conditions is a challenge in the large-scale use of hydrogen as a long-term solution for future energy security. A new class of low-cost catalytic system is presented that uses nanostructured Ni2 P as catalyst, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and high sustainability toward hydrolysis of ammonia-borane with the initial turnover frequency of 40.4 mol(H2) mol(Ni2P) (-1) min(-1) under air atmosphere and at ambient temperature. This value is higher than those reported for noble-metal-free catalysts, and the obtained Arrhenius activation energy (Ea =44.6 kJ mol(-1) ) for the hydrolysis reaction is comparable to Ru-based bimetallic catalysts. A clearly mechanistic analysis of the hydrolytic reaction of AB based on experimental results and a density functional theory calculation is presented.

Abstract:Exploring nonprecious metal based catalysts to replace noble metal based catalysts for hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is still an ongoing challenge. In this work, low-cost ternary nickel–iron–phosphide catalysts supported on Ni foam (Ni–Fe–P/Ni foam) have been synthesized by one-step electroless plating and the as-prepared Ni–Fe–P catalysts were homogeneously distributed on the nickel network. Compared with the binary Ni–P/Ni foam and Fe–P/Ni foam synthesized in the same way, the ternary Ni–Fe–P/Ni foam exhibited the best catalytic activity at room temperature. By using Ni–Fe–P/Ni foam catalysts with a concentration of 0.5 wt% AB, a hydrogen generation (HG) rate of 0.7 L min −1 g −1 could be achieved at 30 °C with a relatively low activation energy value of 42.0 kJ mol −1 . These results indicated that the ternary Ni–Fe–P/Ni foam is a very promising catalyst due to its low-cost and acceptable catalytic activity.

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) has received growing research interest as one of the most promising hydrogen-storage carrier materials. However, fast dehydrogenation of AB is still limited by sluggish catalytic kinetics over current catalysts. Herein, highly uniform and ultrafine bimetallic RhNi alloy nanoclusters encapsulated within nitrogen-functionalized hollow mesoporous carbons (defined as RhNi@NHMCs) are developed as highly active, durable, and selective nanocatalysts for fast hydrolysis of AB under mild conditions. Remarkable activity with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 1294 molH2 molRh-1 min-1 and low activation energy (Ea) of 18.6 kJ mol-1 is observed at room temperature, surpassing the previous Rh-based catalysts. The detailed mechanism studies reveal that when catalyzed by RhNi@NHMCs, a covalently stable O-H bond by H2O first cleaves in electropositive H* and further attacks B-H bond of AB to stoichiometrically produce 3 equiv of H2, whose catalytic kinetics is restricted by the oxidation cleavage of the O-H bond. Compositional and structural features of RhNi@NHMCs result in synergic electronic, functional, and support add-in advantages, kinetically accelerating the cleavage of the attacked H2O (O-H bond) and remarkably promoting the catalytic hydrolysis of AB accordingly. This present work represents a new and effective strategy for exploring high-performance supported metal-based alloy nanoclusters for (electro)catalysis.

Modulating Electronic Metal‐Support Interactions to Boost Visible‐Light‐Driven Hydrolysis of Ammonia Borane: Nickel‐Platinum Nanoparticles Supported on Phosphorus‐Doped Titania

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) is a promising material for chemical H-2 storage owing to its high H-2 density (up to 19.6 wt %). However, the development of an efficient catalyst for driving H-2 evolution through AB hydrolysis remains challenging. Therefore, a visible-light-driven strategy for generating H-2 through AB hydrolysis was implemented in this study using Ni-Pt nanoparticles supported on phosphorus-doped TiO2 (Ni-Pt/P-TiO2) as photocatalysts. Through surface engineering, P-TiO2 was prepared by phytic-acid-assisted phosphorization and then employed as an ideal support for immobilizing Ni-Pt nanoparticles via a facile co-reduction strategy. Under visible-light irradiation at 283 K, Ni40Pt60/P-TiO2 exhibited improved recyclability and a high turnover frequency of 967.8 mol H2 ${{_{{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$ mol(Pt)(-1) min(-1). Characterization experiments and density functional theory calculations indicated that the enhanced performance of Ni40Pt60/P-TiO2 originated from a combination of the Ni-Pt alloying effect, the Mott-Schottky junction at the metal-semiconductor interface, and strong metal-support interactions. These findings not only underscore the benefits of utilizing multipronged effects to construct highly active AB-hydrolyzing catalysts, but also pave a path toward designing high-performance catalysts by surface engineering to modulate the electronic metal-support interactions for other visible-light-induced reactions.
PtxNi10−xO nanoparticles supported on N-doped graphene oxide with a synergetic effect for highly efficient hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Abstract:Oxidized Pt-Ni nanoparticles were deposited on N-doped graphene oxide (NGO) for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB). The optimized Pt3Ni7O-NGO sample shows a high total turnover frequency (TOF) value of 709.6 mol H-2 per mol Cat-Pt per min in the hydrolysis of AB, which is one of the best values for Pt-based catalysts to date. Moreover, when calculating all metal contents (mainly Ni, Pt : Ni = 1 : 5) in the hybrid, the total TOF value is still as high as 120.7 mol H-2 per mol Cat-metal per min, better than that of pure Pt/C or Pt on NGO. The hybrid also exhibits a good stability with more than 76% activity (TOF = 544.9) after 9 cycles. Synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Pt and Ni in the catalyst exhibit a strong interaction through oxygen bonds and the bimetallic structure shows further interaction with the support material. All the components in the hybrid can thus be connected to show a synergetic effect for enhanced catalytic performance. The excellent performance can be related to the unique electronic structure of the hybrid with the synergetic effect, which may also shed light on the design of high-efficiency catalysts for other energy-related applications.

Abstract:Exploitation of high-efficiency and low-cost catalysts for dehydrogenation of the ideal hydrogen storage material (ammonia borane) can effectively promote the development of hydrogen economy. Here, we report an efficient and economical non-noble-metal magnetic catalyst (Ni0.23Co0.19P0.58@NHPC900) with nanoparticles uniformly distributed on MOF-derived (metal-organic framework) nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NHPC900) by a one-step in situ synthesis method. The catalyst has achieved a superior initial total turnover frequency (TOF) of 125.2 molH2·molcat-1·min-1. Based on isotopic analyses and ion effects, we further obtain an unprecedentedly higher TOF of 282.4 molH2·molcat-1·min-1, the highest among non-noble-metal heterogeneous systems. Through experiments and theoretical studies, we confirm that the highly doped phosphorus component leads to a C-P-Ni-Co quaternary synergy in the catalyst. Then, the induced strong electron transfer and increased partial charge can reduce the reaction energy barrier, strengthen the adsorption of ammonia borane, and ultimately result in superior catalytic performance. The proposed mechanisms and strategies are helpful to develop non-noble-metal catalysts for practical applications of hydrogen energy systems in the future.
One-pot Synthesis of Ultrafine Ni0.13Co0.87P Nanoparticles on Halloysite Nanotubes As Efficient Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution from Ammonia Borane

Abstract:Exploring low-cost and earth-abundant catalyst to efficiently release clean H-2 from solid hydrogen storage materials is an appealing solution for exhausted fossil fuel and its associated environmental issue. Halloysite (Hal) nanotubes are regarded as promising alternative catalyst support for expensive synthetic support materials due to their low cost and abundant resource. Herein, we report a simple and controllable one-pot reaction followed by chemical reduction approach to manufacture Ni, Co, P hybrids on Hal as high-efficient and non-noble metal catalysts for hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB). It is revealed that ultrafine Ni0.13Co0.87P nanoparticles with diameter of 1.4 nm are homogenously anchored on Hal surface with excellent stability. The synergy among Ni, Co and P in Ni0.13Co0.87P effectively enhances their interaction with AB, resulting in reduced activation energy (41.8 kJ mol(-1)) and consequently significant boost of hydrolytic catalytic activity (TOF 47.5 mol(H2) mol(cat)(-1) min(-1)). A proposed mechanism demonstrates water molecules involve in the hydrolysis reaction and the rate-determining step is the O-H cleavage in H2O. This work affords a prospective idea for the exploiting of Hal as well as new point of view for the reasonable design of low-cost AB hydrolysis catalyst.
Electronic Engineering Induced Ultrafine Non-Noble Nanoparticles for High-Performance Hydrogen Evolution from Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis

Abstract:The exploration of heterogeneous supported nanocatalysts with high performance as well as low cost is vital but still challenged for utilization of sustainable hydrogen fuel. In this work, bimetallic CuNi nanoparticles are immobilized on zirconia/nitrogen doped porous carbon/reduced graphene oxide (ZrO2/NC/RGO) derived from NH2-UiO-66/GO precursor. Thanks to the usage of ZrO2/NC/RGO, the well-dispersed CuNi NPs with the size of 2.5 nm were successfully obtained via a facile wet-chemical co-reduction method. By virtue of the synergistic effect induced by solid supports, the resulted Cu0.8Ni0.2@ZrO2/NC/RGO nanocatalysts display excellent activity of catalyzing ammonia borane hydrolysis, with an outstanding overall turnover frequency (TOF) value of as high as 40.9 molH2 molcat- 1 min- 1 at mild condition. Such an enhanced catalytic performance is attributed that zirconium oxide combined with N species could induce a strong synergistic effect to efficiently adjust the electronic distribution, optimize the d-band center as well as favor the Femi level of CuNi catalytic sites, resulting in an improving kinetics of ammonia borane hydrolysis (ABH). This work not only deeply explores the catalytic mechanism of ABH, but also provides a promising strategy for construction of heterogeneous nanocatalytic systems with high performance for industrial application.

Abstract:Development of low-cost and high-performance catalysts for hydrogen generation via hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) is a highly desirable pathway for future hydrogen utilization. In this work, Ni nanocatalysts doped with CeOx and supported on graphene (Ni-CeOx/graphene) were synthesized via a facile chemical reduction route and applied as robust catalysts for the hydrolysis of AB in aqueous solution at room temperature. The as-synthesized Ni-CeOx/graphene nanocomposites (NCs) exhibited excellent catalytic activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) as high as 68.2 min−1, which is 49-fold higher than that for a simple Ni nanoparticle catalyst and is among the highest values reported for non-noble metal catalysts in AB hydrolysis. The development of efficient and low-cost Ni-CeOx/graphene catalysts enhances the feasibility of using ammonia borane as a chemical hydrogen storage material, which may find application ina hydrogen fuel-cell based economy.
Constructing ultrafine monodispersed Co2P/(0.59-Cu3P) on Cu doped CoZn-ZIF derived porous N-doped carbon for highly efficient dehydrogenation of ammonia borane

Abstract:Rational construction of highly dispersed, small size, and low cost catalysts for release of hydrogen from ammonia borane (AB) is regarded as a prospective approach for promoting the development of upcoming hydrogen economy. However, the high price and scarcity of precious metal catalysts impose restrictions on their large-scale application. To this end, with the aid of a Cu doped CoZn-zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) template strategy, we successfully construct ultrafine monodispersed Co 2 P/(0.59-Cu 3 P) on CoZn-ZIF derived porous N-doped carbon (Co 2 P/(0.59-Cu 3 P)-NC) as an efficient non-noble-metal catalyst. Specifically, Co and Cu atoms can be geometrically separated to high degree due to the presence of Zn in the CuCoZn-ZIF precursor, and evaporation of Zn during pyrolysis can generate porous structure with the framework well maintained. The results show that porous Co 2 P/(0.59-Cu 3 P)-NC bimetallic phosphide exhibits large specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure, and well-exposed active sites. Based on the kinetics analyses and ion effects, the catalyst has achieved an unprecedentedly high total turnover frequency (TOF) of 798 in 0.4 M NaOH solution at 298 K, which surpasses all the ever-reported transition-metal phosphides catalysts for hydrogen generation from AB. Experiments and theoretical studies confirm that the highly porous structure of the support, the ultrafine and high dispersion of nanoparticles, and the N/P doping and their synergistic effects (e.g., M-P, M-N, N-C, M-M', and M-support) jointly induce strong electron transfer, which can reduce the reaction energy barrier and enhance their interaction with AB, thus correspondingly obtaining excellent catalytic performance. The mechanism and strategy presented in this work pave an avenue for the design of non-noble metal catalyst for hydrogen energy system.

Abstract:Facile yet efficient synthesis of high-performance nanocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from ammonia-borane (AB) hydrolysis is paramount. Here, we reported a novel hybrid nanocatalyst comprised of Rh nanoclusters (1.56 nm in diameters) anchored on nitrogen (N)-doped carbon nanotubes with embedded Ni nanoparticles (Ni@NCNTs), which was fabricated through adsorption of Rh ions on Ni@NCNTs. The achieved hybrid of Rh/Ni@NCNTs displayed excellent catalytic property (Turnover frequency: 959 min(-1)) toward AB hydrolysis, higher than many prior developed Rh-based catalysts. Note that this hybrid could be reused for at least nine runs with complete AB conversion to hydrogen. Rh nanoclusters with small size exhibiting high atom utilization and the synergetic effect between Ni and Rh are responsible for the excellent catalytic property of Rh/Ni@NCNTs toward AB hydrolysis. This work highlights the importance of utilization of magnetically recyclable Ni@NCNTs as support and synergetic component for efficient hydrolysis of AB. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. CuO-Co 3 O 4 Composite Nanoplatelets for Hydrolyzing Ammonia Borane

Abstract:The development of cheap and high-performance catalysts for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) for hydrogen production is a hotspot in the field of nanocatalysis and hydrogen energy. In this paper, we report the simple synthesis of CuO-Co3O4 composite nanoplatelets that were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effects of the molar ratios of CuO to Co3O4 in the composites and the calcination temperatures on the catalytic activity of the obtained products in AB hydrolysis were investigated. In addition, the active species of the catalysts and the synergy of the CuO-Co3O4 nanoplatelets in AB were explored. It was determined that the turnover frequency of the CuO-Co3O4 nanoplatelets can reach 33.4 min–1. By incorporating CuO into Co3O4, the reducibility of the resultant CuO-Co3O4 nanoplatelets was remarkably improved, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The active species is the CoCu alloy formed on the surface of CuO-Co3O4 by the coreduction of CuO and Co3O4 with AB. Non-noble Trimetallic Cu-Ni-Co Nanoparticles Supported on Metal-Organic Frameworks As Highly Efficient Catalysts for Hydrolysis of Ammonia Borane

Abstract:Highly dispersed non-noble trimetallic Cu-Ni-Co nanoparticles can be successfully immobilized onto the pores of the metal-organic framework, MIL-101, by a simple solvent evaporation method. The Cu-Ni-Co@MIL-101 nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic effect on the hydrolysis of ammonia borane at 25 degrees C. Compared to their bimetallic and monometallic counterparts, Cu-Ni-Co trimetallic catalysts display superior catalytic activity. Careful investigation reveals that Cu0.8Ni0.1Co0.1@MIL-101 (Cu:Ni:Co atomic ratio = 8:1:1) displays a total turnover frequency (TOF) value of 72.1 mol(H2) mol(cat)(-1) min(-1). This is the highest TOF value reported for non-noble metal catalysts to date and is even superior to values afforded by some noble metal catalysts (Au, Pt and Pd). The apparent activation energy of Cu0.8Ni0.1-Co0.1@MIL-101 can be as low as 29.1 kJ mol(-1). This remarkable enhancement in catalytic performance is attributed to the large catalyst surface as well as the synergetic effect between Cu, Ni, and Co supported on MIL-101. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of high performance non-noble metal catalysts for the practical hydrolysis of hydrogen storage systems, thereby fast-tracking the application of ammonia borane in fuel cells. Abstract:Recently, hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) is a promising way of producing and employing hydrogen in mild conditions. Nonetheless, the failure to develop inexpensive and high-performance catalyst impedes the further scale hydrogen energy application of AB. Given the fact that ex-situ formed nanocatalysts could be prone to abscission and agglomeration for insufficient dispersion and support, 1D composite microrods with 0D/1D/2D spatial structure constructed by mutual-supported 2D single-crystal Co2Mo3O8 nanosheets and 0D Co nanoparticles (denoted as Co@Co2Mo3O8) have been in-situ synthesized and introduced into the hydrolysis of AB for the first time. Excitingly, the novel Co@Co2Mo3O8 exhibits one of the best catalytic performances in the hydrolysis of AB for non-noble metal/metal oxide heterojunction catalysts with TOF value reaching 17.28 m o l H 2 m o l ca t - 1 m i n - 1 at 25 °C, which is 3.95 and 24.0 times that of the single Co2Mo3O8 and Co. Meanwhile, two kinds of catalytic components with high intrinsic activity (Co2Mo3O8 and Co) and supporting each other in the 0D/1D/2D spatial structure (nanoparticles, microrods, and nanosheets) along with plentiful O vacancies induce the outstanding catalytic activity of Co@Co2Mo3O8. The large-scale controllable preparation method for in-situ fabrication of non-noble metal 0D/1D/2D composite catalysts with high performances would be an accelerator for great potential application for hydrolysis of AB.

Synergistic catalysis over Ni/ZrOx for hydrogen production from hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Abstract:Ammonia borane (AB) is broadly researched as a hydrogen storage medium because of its safe storage and high hydrogen density. However, the development of efficient catalytic systems on non-precious metal catalysts is still a big challenge. Herein, ZrO 2 was selectively used to immobilize Ni nanoparticles, followed by a subsequent reduction at different temperatures to obtain Ni/ZrO x - T catalysts ( T denotes reduction temperature, T = 300–600 °C). The Ni/ZrO x -500 catalyst displays a tremendous enhancement of the reaction rate to 114.41 mol H 2 mol Ni −1 min −1 and the turnover frequency (TOF) to 196.82 min −1 . HR-TEM and XPS characterization techniques verify that the strength of metal–support interaction (MSI) enhances firstly and then decreases as the reduction temperature elevates from 300 to 600 °C, which leads to the formation of an interfacial structure (Ni 2+ –O v –Zr 3+ ) induced by electron transfer from Ni to the ZrO x support. Kinetic isotope effect studies combined with in situ FT-IR measurements confirm that Ni 2+ –O v –Zr 3+ serves as an active structure for AB hydrolysis, in which O v –Zr 3+ directly participates in the rate-determining step (water dissociation) while Ni 2+ accelerates the B–H bond cleavage. This work provides a useful paradigm for the rational design and preparation of cost-effective catalysts for AB hydrolysis with a high H 2 production.

Abstract:Developing an efficient catalyst for hydrogen (H2) generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) to significantly improve the activity for the hydrogen generation from AB is important for its practical application. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure composed of uniformly dispersed 2P core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedron (2P/N–CNP) through a carbonization-phosphidation strategy derived from ZIF-67. Benefiting from the electronic effect of P doping, high dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between 2P and N-CNTs, the 2P/N–CNP catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance towards the hydrolysis of AB for hydrogen generation, affording a high TOF value of 18.4 mol H2 mol metal−1 min−1 at the first cycle. This work provides a promising lead for the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts towards convenient H2 generation from hydrogen-rich substrates in the close future.

Abstract:The magnetic composites consisting of a porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and the core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 were facilely prepared. Subsequently, the Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were stabilized on the composites by the in-situ reduction of PdCl2 with sodium borohydride. The mass ratio of Fe3O4@SiO2 to g-C3N4 was optimized in view of the catalytic activity of the corresponding Pd-based catalysts for ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis. The results showed that the catalyst fabricated with a mass ratio of 1:1 (Fe3O4@SiO2: g-C3N4) displayed the highest catalytic activity. The Pd NPs were mainly distributed in the region of 5.4–9.8 nm in the optimal Pd/Fe3O4@SiO2-g-C3N4 catalyst, which had a specific surface area of 47.5 m2 g−1 and a total pore volume of 0.126 cm3 g−1. Catalyzed by the optimal catalyst, the turnover frequency was 33.7 mol H 2 · mol Pd − 1 · min − 1 , and the apparent activation energy was 31.4 kJ mol−1. Also, the recycling experiments indicated that the optimal catalyst still maintained a high catalytic activity even after eight runs. The superior catalytic performance is presumably due to the highly dispersed Pd NPs and the stably porous structure with large specific surface area. The excellent catalytic and magnetic properties endow Pd/Fe3O4@SiO2-g-C3N4 exciting potential in the hydrogenation generation from the hydrolysis of solid hydrogen storage materials.
