Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 nanorod (TNR) array films decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) by a hydrothermal treatment and a successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) technique. The amount of Ag NPs on the TNR can be controlled by changing the number of cycles in silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution. The morphology, structure, composition, optical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the Ag/TNR films were investigated in detail. The Ag/TNR films exhibit larger redshift of the absorption edges and higher absorption intensities in the visible light range. Furthermore, the Ag/TNR films sensitized with 5 SILAR cycles show the best photocurrent density (32 mu A/cm(2)) and photodegradation efficiency (95.52%), which is 5.7 and 1.3 times higher than that of pure TNR, respectively. The excellent properties can be ascribed to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs. The stability and reusability of the Ag/TNR films were also investigated. Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:A novel Cu2O/{101}TiO2 nanosheet (Cu2O/{101}TNS) array film was prepared by the electrodeposition of Cu2O on the {101} facets of anatase nanosheet arrays by varying electrodeposition potential. The crystal structure, morphology, elemental chemical states, optical properties, photoelectrochemical properties, and stability of Cu2O/{101}TNS array films were investigated in detail. For TNS, due to different band structures and band edge positions between {001} and {101} facets, Cu2O/{101} facets of TiO2 have higher band offset value which supply a larger driving force to increase the transport efficiency of carriers. Besides, owing to the directional flow of photo-generated electrons from {001} to {101} facets, the electrodeposition of Cu2O on the {101} facets of TNS will shorten the route length that the electrons must travel, thus reduce recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. In addition, as the applied negative potential is high enough, a part of Cu+ is reduced to Cu, which is beneficial for the photoexcited electrons transfer from CB of Cu2O to that of TiO2. The enhanced photoelectrochemical properties of Cu2O/{101}TNS array films can be attributed to the cocontributions of different band edge positions between {001} and {101} facets, Cu2O-Cu-TiO2 ternary components and vertically aligned single-crystal TiO2 nanosheet structure.

Abstract:In order to obtain oriented nanostructured materials for nanoelectronic/microelectronic device applications via a simple method, a study on the preparation of oriented ZnO was carried out. The experimental results indicated that large-scale-oriented ZnO rod arrays on glass substrates via an in situ deposition approach can be obtained. The I–V examination of the oriented ZnO rod arrays film showed that the photocurrent increased of about two orders of magnitude after white light exposure.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays are fabricated by a two-step solution immersion and a subsequent sulfurization. The material properties including structure, morphology, and photoluminescence are investigated by a variety of characterization methods. As compared with ZnO@ZnS core/shell structure, FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays show improved optical absorption property with the extension of the absorption edge into the range of visible light. The photoresponse performance of FeS2-sensitized Zno@ZnS is also enhanced as the photocurrent density at 1.0 V is dozens of times larger than that of ZnO@ZnS nanorods. The cause for the difference in such material properties of these two materials is discussed. In this work, a new method for sensitizing wide bandgap ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays with improved light response performance is presented.
Fabrication of Z-Scheme Fe2O3–MoS2–Cu2O Ternary Nanofilm with Significantly Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Ternary Fe2O3–MoS2–Cu2O nanocomposites were fabricated via electrodeposition and hydrothermal method. The as-prepared photocatalytic films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that MoS2 and Cu2O particles were successfully deposited onto the surface of Fe2O3 particles. MoS2 and Cu2O coloading achieved a synergetic effect on the improvement of the photoelectrochemical performance of Fe2O3 film. The highest photocurrent density was achieved on Fe2O3–MoS2–Cu2O film, which was 20, ∼5.5, and 2 times those of Fe2O3, Fe2O3–MoS2, and Fe2O3–Cu2O films, respectively. The excellent photoelectrocatalytic performance was attributed to the Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism, which results in the fast charge transfer and strong redox ability on the ternary composite. This work provides a promising Z-scheme ternary semiconductor for environmental purification and water oxidation.

Abstract:Here, large-scale and uniform hexagonal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheet films were deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated transparent conducting glass substrates via a facile galvanic displacement deposition process. Compared with other commonly used solution methods, this process avoids high temperature and electric power as well as supporting agents to make it simple and cost-effective. The as-fabricated ZnO nanosheet films have uniform hexagonal wurtzite structure. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell based on ZnO nanosheet film/ITO photoelectrode was also fabricated and its performance was improved by optimizing the solution concentration. A higher photocurrent density of ~500 μA cm −2 under AM 1.5 G simulated illumination of 100 mW cm −2 with zero bias potential (vs. Ag/AgCl electrode) was obtained, which may ascribe to the increased surface-to-volume ratio of disordered ZnO nanosheet arrays. Our developed method may be used to deposit other oxide semiconductors, and the ZnO nanosheet film/ITO PEC cell can be used to design low-cost optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical devices.

Abstract:Cu2O sensitized ZnO nanorod array films were prepared on transparent conductive glass (FTO) by electrochemical deposition method.The microstructure,surface morphologies and photoelectric properties of Cu2O sensitized ZnO films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM),transmission electron microscopy (TEM),high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),X-ray energy spectrum (EDS) and electrochemical workstation (CHI601C).The results show that electrochemical deposition of Cu2O nanocrystals can be formed heterojunction with the ZnO nanorods and improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of ZnO thin films.The photoelectric conversion efficiency of Cu2O sensitized ZnO nanorod films is the highest when the deposition time of Cu2O is 5 min.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Radial heterojunction solar cells based on n-type TiO2 nanorod arrays filled with p-type Cu2O films have been prepared. TiO2 nanorod arrays are synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. Cu2O films are then electrodeposited at the surface of TiO2 nanorods. The efficiency of the resulting Cu2O/TiO2 nanorod radial heterojunction solar cells is up to 1.25%. Current work demonstrates that nanorod radial heterojunctions are promising structures for photovoltaic application. Electrodeposition may be used for the large-scale fabrication of low-cost solar cells based on nanorod radial heterojunctions. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays were fabricated and used as the photoanodes for quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The cell performance of the ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays after sensitization was better than that of ZnO-based nanorod arrays without sensitizing treatment. Pyrite FeS2 was found to be an effective photosensitizer for QDSSCs. Various QDSSCs were assembled using different counter electrodes, such as Pt, FeS2 nanorods and FeS2 nanoparticles, and comparisons of cell performance as well as catalytic activity were made among them.

Abstract:TiO2/SnS/MoS2 ternary nanorod arrays were synthesized on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass by a successive hydrothermal method. The morphology, microstructure, optical properties, photodegradation activity, photoelectrochemical performance, and charge transport mechanism of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 were systematically studied. It was found that SnS and MoS2 with a narrow bandgap can facilitate light absorbance of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 heterostructures across the visible range, improving the utilization of sunlight. TiO2/SnS/MoS2 exhibits the maximum photodegradation rate (61.54%) for Rhodamine B (RhB) in 60 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant (0.0122 min-1), which is about 5.16 times better than that of TiO2. As a photoanode, TiO2/SnS/MoS2 has the highest photocurrent (0.841 mA/cm2), which is approximately 8.32 times better than those of TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 is ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism determined by the detection of active species and the synergistic effect of SnS and MoS2 co-decoration.

Abstract:Highly oriented nanorod arrays of ZnO were grown by the hydrothermal method at low temperature on the conductive side of the FTO(fluorine-doped tin oxide) where ZnO seeds had been fabricated by the decomposition of Zn(Ac)(2). The effects of the reaction conditions such as solution concentration, pH value and reaction time upon the microstructures of the nanorod arrays were studied. The results show that the diameter of nanorods increases with the increase in solution concentration and pH value, respectively. The length of nanorods increases as reaction time increases. The films of ZnO nanorod arrays were used and characterized as the photoelectrode of DSSC (dye sensitized solar cells).

Abstract:This study investigates the morphological evolution, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of copper-oxide-coated ZnO nanorods under different annealing conditions. Distinct effects of annealing temperature and atmosphere on Cu2O and CuO growth on ZnO nanorods were observed. SEM images revealed the transformation of Cu2O from silk-like to mushroom-like structures, while CuO formed interconnecting nanomaterials. XRD and XPS analyses showed peak shifts and binding energy changes, highlighting structural and electronic modifications induced by annealing. Moreover, PEC measurements demonstrated the superior photoresponse of CuO-coated ZnO nanorods, especially under negative bias, attributed to favorable band structure, charge carrier separation, and annealing stability compared to Cu2O-coated ones. A noteworthy discovery is that ZnO nanorods coated with CuO nanostructures, prepared under air conditions at 400 °C annealing temperature, exhibit exceptional photocurrents. Applying a 0.4 V voltage increases the photocurrent by approximately 10 mA/cm2. The findings provide valuable insights into tailoring metal oxide semiconductor nanostructures for potential applications in diverse areas, including photoelectrochemistry. This study offers practical guidance on modulating nanostructure growth through annealing to enhance performance. The results hold significance for PEC water splitting and have far-reaching impacts on photocatalysis, environmental remediation, and solar cells.

Abstract:CuO has been considered a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical water splitting electrodes owing to its suitable bandgap, favorable band alignments, and earth-abundant nature. In this paper, a novel gas-phase cation exchange method was developed to synthesize CuO nanorod arrays by using ZnO nanorod arrays as the template. ZnO nanorods were fully converted to CuO nanorods with aspect ratios of 10-20 at the temperature range from 350 to 600 °C. The as-synthesized CuO nanorods exhibit a photocurrent as high as 2.42 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) under 1.5 AM solar irradiation, demonstrating the potential as the photoelectrode for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting. Our method provides a new approach for the rational fabrication of high-performance CuO-based nanodevices.

Abstract:Sandwich-structured CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods were prepared by embedding Au nanoparticles in CdS coating-covered ZnO nanorods for high photochemical and photoelectrochemical activities via semiconductor and metal cosensitizing. The photoelectrochemical and photochemical properties were evaluated for the CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods to be used as a photoanode in a photo-electrochemical process and as a photocatalyst to photo-degrade organic methylene blue molecules. The CdS coatings serve as a semiconductor sensitizer to improve the photogeneration of electron-hole pairs and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes by extending the photoresponse range, increasing light absorption and suppressing the recombination of electrons and holes. The Au nanoparticles act as a metal sensitizer to further increase the light absorption because of the local surface plasmon resonance effect and the increased effective optical path length and promote the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of CdS to that of ZnO as an electron relay. The cosensitizing by CdS coatings and Au nanoparticles offers the CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods high photochemical and photoelectrochemical activities.

Abstract:An ultrathin layer of CdS (similar to 8 nm) was successfully coated on an array of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods using pulsed electrodeposition. The pulse was essential during the deposition of CdS to ensure equilibrium between diffusion and nucleation of CdS precursors. These ZnO nanorods functioned as a large contact base for the deposition of CdS. This enlarged interface between CdS and ZnO together with its close intimacy facilitated efficient charge transfer from the excited CdS to ZnO upon visible illumination. Owing to the high electron mobility of ZnO, it shuttled the electrons efficiently for enhanced photocurrent generation. Compared to the bare CdS film, the CdS-ZnO photoelectrode yielded a doubled anodic visible photocurrent density of 6 mA cm(-2) at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical characterization showed that the charge recombination within CdS was suppressed and the appropriate band alignment favored the electron transfer.
