Abstract:Zn 1−x Cu x O nanorods with different Cu concentrations are prepared by a hydrothermal method. Bent and aggregated nanorods are obtained, which is attributed to centripetal surface tension of the evaporation and coagulation processes of the water film on the ZnO nanorods. The broad visible band consists of one violet, three blue, and one green emission. The violet emission is due to the transition of electrons from zinc interstitial (Zn i ) levels to the valance band. The three blue emissions may be attributed to the transition from extended Zn i levels, which are slightly below the simple Zn i level, to the valance band. The change of the green emission may be the result of competition between oxygen vacancies (V O ) and zinc vacancies (V Zn ).

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:In this article, we fabricated ZnO nanorod arrays on ITO substrates by cathodic electrodeposition method under different electrodeposition times. The XRD results illustrate that all of the peaks can be attributed to the hexagonal wurtzite structure. Besides, the crystallinity and the preferred c-axis orientation increase with longer electrodeposition time. With the increasing electrodeposition time, the diameter of nanorods, the surface roughness and thickness of ZnO nanorod arrays also increased. All samples exhibit hydrophobic behavior and the water contact angle (CA) increases to 120 degrees with the electrodeposition time increases to 120 min. After 10 min of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, the wettability of the ZnO surfaces turn from hydrophobic to hydrophilicity, and the change of the CA reduction rate are 73.5, 63.5, 48.3 and 24.2%, corresponding to the sample electrodeposited 10, 30, 60 and 120 min, respectively. The intensity of UV emission peak ratio increases from 2.26 to 63.84% while the visible emission peak ratio decreases in PL spectra, which reveals defects decrease when electrodeposition time increases from 10 to 120 min. Raman spectrum shows three peaks which are located at 439, 566 and 1097 cm(-1), corresponding to the E-2, E-1L and E-3 mode of ZnO. (C) 2016 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Abstract:ZnO nanorods were grown on ITO substrates with different concentration of electrolyte by electrodeposition method. Microstructure, surface topography, photoluminescence Spectra, Raman spectra and water contact angle of the thin films were measured. The XRD results show all samples are hexagonal wurtzite and the intensity of diffraction peaks at (002) preferred orientation are strengthen as electrolyte concentration increase from 0.005 to 0.03 M. As the concentration increases, the average diameter, density and inclination of the ZnO nanorods increased. Room temperature photoluminescence spectras of the ZnO nanorods show a narrow UV band centering at about 377 nm and broad visible emissions around 600 nm and the UV peak intensity revealed a remarkable decreased. Raman spectras exhibit three peaks which are located at 439 cm(-1), 562 cm(-1) and 1095 cm(-1). All samples change from hydrophobicity to hydrophilic after one hour ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Abstract:An ultrathin layer of CdS (similar to 8 nm) was successfully coated on an array of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods using pulsed electrodeposition. The pulse was essential during the deposition of CdS to ensure equilibrium between diffusion and nucleation of CdS precursors. These ZnO nanorods functioned as a large contact base for the deposition of CdS. This enlarged interface between CdS and ZnO together with its close intimacy facilitated efficient charge transfer from the excited CdS to ZnO upon visible illumination. Owing to the high electron mobility of ZnO, it shuttled the electrons efficiently for enhanced photocurrent generation. Compared to the bare CdS film, the CdS-ZnO photoelectrode yielded a doubled anodic visible photocurrent density of 6 mA cm(-2) at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical characterization showed that the charge recombination within CdS was suppressed and the appropriate band alignment favored the electron transfer.

Abstract:Radial heterojunction solar cells based on n-type TiO2 nanorod arrays filled with p-type Cu2O films have been prepared. TiO2 nanorod arrays are synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. Cu2O films are then electrodeposited at the surface of TiO2 nanorods. The efficiency of the resulting Cu2O/TiO2 nanorod radial heterojunction solar cells is up to 1.25%. Current work demonstrates that nanorod radial heterojunctions are promising structures for photovoltaic application. Electrodeposition may be used for the large-scale fabrication of low-cost solar cells based on nanorod radial heterojunctions. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Here, large-scale and uniform hexagonal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheet films were deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated transparent conducting glass substrates via a facile galvanic displacement deposition process. Compared with other commonly used solution methods, this process avoids high temperature and electric power as well as supporting agents to make it simple and cost-effective. The as-fabricated ZnO nanosheet films have uniform hexagonal wurtzite structure. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell based on ZnO nanosheet film/ITO photoelectrode was also fabricated and its performance was improved by optimizing the solution concentration. A higher photocurrent density of ~500 μA cm −2 under AM 1.5 G simulated illumination of 100 mW cm −2 with zero bias potential (vs. Ag/AgCl electrode) was obtained, which may ascribe to the increased surface-to-volume ratio of disordered ZnO nanosheet arrays. Our developed method may be used to deposit other oxide semiconductors, and the ZnO nanosheet film/ITO PEC cell can be used to design low-cost optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical devices.

Abstract:ZnO nanocrystallines with different morphologies have been prepared on unmodified ITO substrate by using a potentiostatic electrodeposition method. After the ITO substrate was pre-modified with ZnO nanoparticles, a transparent and highly oriented ZnO nanorod array with a diameter less than 30 nm has been successfully prepared by the electrochemical deposition. The obtained ZnO nanostructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission spectroscopy. The results indicate that the average diameter of ZnO nanorod is about 21 nm, and the size distribution is about 18 similar to 25 nm. The nanorods, growing along [001] direction, are perpendicularly oriented to the substrate. When the wavelength of incident light is over 400 mn, the ZnO nanorod array films show high optical transmission of above 95%.

Abstract:AgCuO2 nanoplates have been electrodeposited onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass near room temperature in an alkaline aqueous solution contained silver(I)/copper(II) ammonia complexes. The Ag(I)/Cu(II) ammonia complexes act as water or ammonia oxidation catalysts to generate acid and lower the local pH at ITO electrode, and then Ag+ and Cu2+ ions are partial oxidized and dissociated from complexes to react with OH-to form AgCuO2 deposits on ITO. The electrodeposited AgCuO2 are composed of single crystal cuboidal nanoplates with a preferential orientation along [-202] crystal axis. X-ray photoelectron spectra results indicate that the Ag and Cu ions in AgCuO2 are partially oxidized to +3 valence states. The as-electrodeposited AgCuO2 nanoplates show four distinct discharge processes at + 0.28, + 0.01, -0.42, and -0.67 V vs. Ag/AgCl. (C) 2017 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This work reports a novel approach to patterning copper nanoparticles on a Cu2O substrate by a photo-electroreduction reaction with the aid of scanning electrochemical microscopy in direct mode. The concept is based on the localized cathodic current flux produced when applying both negative potentials and light irradiation to p-type semiconductors. The patterns can be tuned by modifying the deposition potential, duration time and illumination intensity, and have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) decorated with Cu nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared on Si (100) by a hydrothermal method together with atomic layer deposition (ALD). By varying the number of ALD cycles, the size and concentration of Cu NPs on the ZnO NWs can be accurately controlled. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were applied to demonstrate the formation of Cu NPs on ZnO NWs. Study of the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of ZnO NWs decorated with different densities of Cu NPs show a gradual change in the near-band edge emission and deep level emission with an increasing number of ALD cycles. The enhancement of PL with a decreasing number of ALD cycles was because of decreasing the size of the Cu NPs. The results are discussed considering two major physical phenomena taking place at the interface between Cu NPs and ZnO NWs, namely, passivation of surface dangling bonds of ZnO NWs by Cu NPs and formation of a Schottky contact at the boundaries between them. This work not only indicates that ALD is an excellent technique to grow conformal Cu NPs with highly controllable size but also demonstrates that the surface passivation and electron transfer between Cu and ZnO can efficiently manipulate the PL intensities of ZnO NWs.
TiO2 Coated ZnO Nanorods by Mist Chemical Vapor Deposition for Application as Photoanodes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:In this study, a mist chemical vapor deposition method was applied to create a coating of titanium dioxide particles in order to fabricate ZnO/TiO2 core-shell nanostructures. The thin layers of titanium dioxide on the zinc oxide nanorods were uniform and confirmed as pure anatase phase. The morphological, structural, optical and photoluminescence properties of the ZnO/TiO2 core-shell structures were influenced by coating time. For instance, the crystallinity of the titanium dioxide increased in accordance with an increase in the duration of the coating time. Additionally, the thickness of the titanium dioxide layer gradually increased with the coating time, resulting in an increased surface area. The transmittance of the arrayed ZnO/TiO2 core-shell structures was 65% after 15 min of coating. The obtained ZnO/TiO2 core-shell nanostructures demonstrated high potentiality to serve as photoanodes for application in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays were fabricated and used as the photoanodes for quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The cell performance of the ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays after sensitization was better than that of ZnO-based nanorod arrays without sensitizing treatment. Pyrite FeS2 was found to be an effective photosensitizer for QDSSCs. Various QDSSCs were assembled using different counter electrodes, such as Pt, FeS2 nanorods and FeS2 nanoparticles, and comparisons of cell performance as well as catalytic activity were made among them.

Abstract:Cu2O sensitized ZnO nanorod array films were prepared on transparent conductive glass (FTO) by electrochemical deposition method.The microstructure,surface morphologies and photoelectric properties of Cu2O sensitized ZnO films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM),transmission electron microscopy (TEM),high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),X-ray energy spectrum (EDS) and electrochemical workstation (CHI601C).The results show that electrochemical deposition of Cu2O nanocrystals can be formed heterojunction with the ZnO nanorods and improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of ZnO thin films.The photoelectric conversion efficiency of Cu2O sensitized ZnO nanorod films is the highest when the deposition time of Cu2O is 5 min.

Abstract:This study investigates the morphological evolution, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of copper-oxide-coated ZnO nanorods under different annealing conditions. Distinct effects of annealing temperature and atmosphere on Cu2O and CuO growth on ZnO nanorods were observed. SEM images revealed the transformation of Cu2O from silk-like to mushroom-like structures, while CuO formed interconnecting nanomaterials. XRD and XPS analyses showed peak shifts and binding energy changes, highlighting structural and electronic modifications induced by annealing. Moreover, PEC measurements demonstrated the superior photoresponse of CuO-coated ZnO nanorods, especially under negative bias, attributed to favorable band structure, charge carrier separation, and annealing stability compared to Cu2O-coated ones. A noteworthy discovery is that ZnO nanorods coated with CuO nanostructures, prepared under air conditions at 400 °C annealing temperature, exhibit exceptional photocurrents. Applying a 0.4 V voltage increases the photocurrent by approximately 10 mA/cm2. The findings provide valuable insights into tailoring metal oxide semiconductor nanostructures for potential applications in diverse areas, including photoelectrochemistry. This study offers practical guidance on modulating nanostructure growth through annealing to enhance performance. The results hold significance for PEC water splitting and have far-reaching impacts on photocatalysis, environmental remediation, and solar cells.

Abstract:Sandwich-structured CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods were prepared by embedding Au nanoparticles in CdS coating-covered ZnO nanorods for high photochemical and photoelectrochemical activities via semiconductor and metal cosensitizing. The photoelectrochemical and photochemical properties were evaluated for the CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods to be used as a photoanode in a photo-electrochemical process and as a photocatalyst to photo-degrade organic methylene blue molecules. The CdS coatings serve as a semiconductor sensitizer to improve the photogeneration of electron-hole pairs and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes by extending the photoresponse range, increasing light absorption and suppressing the recombination of electrons and holes. The Au nanoparticles act as a metal sensitizer to further increase the light absorption because of the local surface plasmon resonance effect and the increased effective optical path length and promote the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of CdS to that of ZnO as an electron relay. The cosensitizing by CdS coatings and Au nanoparticles offers the CdS/Au/ZnO nanorods high photochemical and photoelectrochemical activities.

Abstract:Vertically aligned CuO nanorod arrays on copper electrodes with diameters of ∼5nm and lengths of hundreds of nanometers were synthesized successfully using a simple wet chemical method at room temperature. The composition, morphology, and growth conditions of the nanorods were characterized. We also show that the as-prepared CuO nanorod arrays are promising hole-transport media of dye-sensitized hetero-junctions for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Large-scale arrays of aligned ZnO hexagonal nanorods with planar ends have been achieved on a bare native n-type (100) Si substrate via a simple electrochemical deposition in Zn(NH3)(4)(NO3)(2) solution with a pure Zn sheet as the anode without using any catalysts, additives, and additional seed crystals. The ZnO hexagonal nanorods grow from the single-crystal seeds self-formed in the initial stage of the electrochemical deposition. The diameters and the lengths of the ZnO nanorods can be tailored by adjusting the electrolyte concentration and the electrodeposition duration. Field-emission measurements show that the ZnO nanorods with smaller diameters exhibit lower turn-on field and higher current density. The well-aligned ZnO hexagonal nanorods (oil Si substrate) with tunable size and field emission performance may have potentials in the future of nanotechnology.
