Abstract:Due to the nature of infinite dimensionality, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been considered as a new degree of freedom of light and widely expanded the scopes of substantial optical applications such as optical telecommunication, quantum information, particle manipulation and imaging. In recent years, the integrated photonic OAM emitters have been actively investigated due to both compactness and tunability. Essentially, the number of available OAM modes by dynamic switching should be large enough so that the dimensionality of OAM could be explored as much as possible. In this work, an integrated photonic emitter with a wide switching range of OAM modes is theoretically developed, numerically simulated and experimentally verified. The independence of the micro-ring cavity and the scattering unit provides the flexibility to design the device and optimize the performance. Specifically, the dynamic switching of nine OAM modes (l = −4 ~ 4) with azimuthal polarization has been demonstrated by electrically controlled thermo-optic effect.

Abstract:The polarizations of optical fields, besides field intensities, provide more degrees of freedom to manipulate coherent light-matter interactions. Here we propose how to achieve a coherent switch of optomechanical entanglement in a polarized-light-driven cavity system. We show that by tuning the polarizations of the driving field, the effective optomechanical coupling can be well controlled and, as a result, quantum entanglement between the mechanical oscillator and the optical transverse electric (TE) mode can be coherently and reversibly switched to that between the same phonon mode and the optical transverse magnetic (TM) mode. This ability of switching optomechanical entanglement with such a vectorial device can be important for building a quantum network being capable of efficient quantum information interchanges between processing nodes and flying photons.

Abstract:The ability to rapidly switch between orbital angular momentum modes of light has important implications for future classical and quantum systems. In general, orbital angular momentum beams are generated using free-space bulk optical components where the fastest reconfiguration of such systems is around a millisecond using spatial light modulators. In this work, an extremely compact optical vortex emitter is demonstrated with the ability to actively tune between different orbital angular momentum modes. The emitter is tuned using a single electrically contacted thermo-optical control, maintaining device simplicity and micron scale footprint. On–off keying and orbital angular momentum mode switching are achieved at rates of 10 μs and 20 μs respectively.

Abstract:An approach to producing electromagnetic (EM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) by using three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) is proposed. By introducing a point defect in the PCs, a localized rotation mode is excited and then radiated out through a circular opening upon the defect. The radiated wave carries well-defined OAM. The lowest four OAM modes, i.e., OAM indices of ±1 and ±2, are successfully generated. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by both full-wave simulations and experiments.

Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.

Abstract:An approach to producing the orbital angular momentum (OAM) based on spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in microwave frequencies is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The fundamental and high-order modes of spoof LSPs occur when a textured metallic surface is excited with a microstrip line. Two orthogonal modes of spoof LSPs with +90° or -90° phase retardation are superimposed, resulting in a OAM-vortex mode. In the proposed design, two separate feeding ports are employed to excite the orthogonal resonant modes simultaneously, and a hybrid coupler is used to provide the required ±90° phase retardation. By loading a circularly arranged dipole array on the spoof LSPs, the confined surface waves of the spoof LSPs can be converted into radiated vortex waves. To verify this idea, an OAM-mode emitter with indices of ±3 is fabricated and measured. Experimental near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns show excellent agreement with the simulated results.

Abstract:An integrated photonic OAM emitter has been theoretically designed, numerically simulated, experimentally fabricated. With our proposal, each part could be optimized independently. The number of downloading waveguides is 32 so that a larger dynamic switching range of OAM modes (l=-16 similar to+16 in theory) and higher radiation efficiency can be achieved.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental results on a simple and compact wavelength switchable V-coupled cavity semiconductor laser. Discrete wavelength switching of 26 channels with 100GHz spacing is achieved with a side-mode-suppression-ratio of about 37 dB, using a single-electrode control. It is shown that the wavelength channels can be switched in opposite directions with different consecutively switchable ranges by tuning the long or short cavity.

Abstract:An integrated device, which consists of a variable amplitude splitter and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) emitter, is proposed for the superposition of optical vortex beams. With fixed wavelength and power of incident beam, the OAM of the radiated optical superimposed vortex beam can be dynamically tuned. To verify the operating principle, the proposed device has been fabricated on the SOI substrate and experimentally measured. The experimental results confirm the tunability of superimposed vortex beams. Moreover, the ability of independently varying the OAM flux and the geometric distribution of intensity is illustrated and discussed with numerical simulation. We believe that this work would be promising in various applications.

Abstract:Radially polarized orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams could be applied in optical manipulation and optical microscopy. An integrated OAM beam emitter with radially polarized radiation is proposed on shallow-ridge silicon microring with azimuthally distributed gratings etched on top of the ring waveguide. Two key structural parameters, the number of grating elements, and the dimension of each grating element are optimized by considering both the OAM order purity (Cp) and the total radiation efficiency (ηall). With elaborate design, Cp = ~98%, ηall = ~49% are achieved by simulations, and the calculated energy ratio between the far-field radially and azimuthally polarized component is more than 11 dB, which indicates that the radially polarized component is predominant in the radiated electromagnetic field.

Abstract:Emerging applications based on optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum will likely require photonic integrated devices and circuits for miniaturization, improved performance and enhanced functionality. Recently we demonstrated a novel emitter of cylindrical optical vortex beams that carry photonic orbital angular momentum. The emitter consisted of a whispering gallery mode resonator embedded with gratings in the azimuthal angular dimension. This method can be generalized to produce other types of structured light beams that have some kind of cylindrical symmetry. The applications potentials and challenges in the devices in optical communications, quantum information systems, and optical sensing, imaging, and manipulation systems are also discussed.

Abstract:On-chip twisted light emitters are essential components for orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication devices, which could address the growing demand for high-capacity communication systems by providing an additional degree of freedom for wavelength/frequency division multiplexing (WDM/FDM). Although whispering gallery mode enabled OAM emitters have been shown to possess some advantages, such as being compact and phase accurate, their inherent narrow bandwidth prevents them from being compatible with WDM/FDM techniques. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-broadband multiplexed OAM emitter that utilizes a novel joint path-resonance phase control concept. The emitter has a micron sized radius and nanometer sized features. Coaxial OAM beams are emitted across the entire telecommunication band from 1450 to 1650 nm. We applied the emitter for OAM communication with a data rate of 1.2 Tbit/s assisted by 30-channel optical frequency combs (OFC). The emitter provides a new solution to further increase of the capacity in the OFC communication scenario.

Abstract:A simple on-chip integrated structure is proposed to generate optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, where only silicon waveguides and couplers are involved. The operating principle is based on mode converting and proper controlling the phase shift of second-order propagating mode so that OAM modes with charge numbers of 1 or -1 can be selectively generated with mode purity > 90%. The proposed device is very compact with footprint of <; 120 μm × 50 μm and can be easily fabricated with CMOS technology. Thus, such OAM mode generator is a promising candidate for applications ranging from optical tweezers and optical spanners to optical communications.

Abstract:Light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have important implications for future classical and quantum systems. In many applications, controlled switching of the OAM state at high speed is crucial, while accelerating the switching rate presents a long-standing challenge. Here we present a method for flexibly switching the OAM state of light based on a coherent laser array system. In the system, the output structured light beam is tailored by the coherent combination of array elements. By employing an OAM mode sorting assisted phase control subsystem, which continuously performs the optimization algorithm, the dynamic wavefront distortion of the combined OAM beam could be compensated. Meanwhile, our approach allows one to achieve fast states switching of the combined OAM beam via programming the cost function of the algorithm. The results of Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, and the mode purity and power scaling potential of the controllably generated OAM beam are discussed. This theoretical work could be beneficial to the future implementation of rapidly switchable OAM beams at practical output power.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by photons defines an infinitely dimensional discrete Hilbert space. With OAM modes, high-dimensional quantum states can be achieved for quantum communication and cryptography. Here we demonstrate a heralded single-photon source with a switchable OAM mode, which consists of a heralded single-photon source and an integrated OAM emitter as the mode converter. As the first step, the heralded single-photon source is based on the dispersion-shifted fiber. In this work, the OAM mode (quantized by topological charge l ) carried by the heralded single photon (at fixed wavelength of 1555.75 nm) can be switched within the range of l = 3 – 7 while the mode purity is more than 80%.
