Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate that the superposition of two vortex beams with controlled topological charges can be realized by integrating two holographic plates with blazed grating. First, the holographic plate with blazed grating was designed and fabricated by laser direct writing for generating well-separated vortex beam. Then, the relationship between the periods of blazed grating and the discrete angles of vortex beams was systemically investigated. Finally, through setting the discrete angle and different revolving direction of the holographic plates, the composite fork-shaped field was realized by the superposition of two vortex beams in a particular position. The topological charges of composite fork-shaped field (l = 1, 0, 3, and 4) depend on the topological charges of compositional vortex beams, which are well agreed with the theoretical simulation. The method opens up a wide range of opportunities and possibilities for applying in optical communication, optical manipulations, and photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Optical vortices are the light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), helical phase fronts and azimuthal component of the wave vector. The demand for miniaturization and scalability requires avoiding shortcomings of bulk optics via photonic integration. The integrated OAM emitters are designed to generate and manipulate OAM beams. Photonic integration is compatible with high purity of single mode emission and high efficiency, achieving controllable mode superposition and multiplexing. The potential applications in microscopy, micromanipulation, telecommunications and quantum information are presented and reviewed.

Abstract:Vortex crystals are geometric arrays of vortices found in various physics fields, owing their regular internal structure to mutual interactions within a spatially confined system. In optics, vortex crystals may form spontaneously within a nonlinear resonator but their usefulness is limited by the lack of control over their topology. On the other hand, programmable devices used in free space, like spatial light modulators, allow the design of nearly arbitrary vortex distributions but without any intrinsic dynamics. By combining non-Hermitian optics with on-demand topological transformations enabled by metasurfaces, we report a solid-state laser that generates vortex crystals with mutual interactions and actively-tunable topologies. We demonstrate 10x10 coherent vortex arrays with nonlocal coupling networks that are not limited to nearest-neighbor coupling but rather dictated by the crystal's topology. The vortex crystals exhibit sharp Bragg diffraction peaks, witnessing their coherence and high topological charge purity, which we resolve spatially over the whole lattice by introducing a parallelized analysis technique. By structuring light at the source, we enable complex transformations that allow to arbitrarily partition the orbital angular momentum inside the cavity and to heal topological charge defects, making these resonators a robust and versatile tool for advanced applications in topological optics.

Abstract:The explorations of physical degrees of freedom with infinite dimensionalities, such as orbital angular momentum and frequency of light, have profoundly reshaped the landscape of modern optics with representative photonic functional devices including optical vortex emitters and frequency combs. In nanophotonics, whispering gallery mode microresonators naturally support orbital angular momentum of light and have been demonstrated as on-chip emitters of monochromatic optical vortices. On the other hand, whispering gallery mode microresonators serve as a highly efficient nonlinear optical platform for producing light at different frequencies - i.e., microcombs. Here, we interlace the optical vortices and microcombs by demonstrating an optical vortex comb on an III-V integrated nonlinear microresonator. The angular-grating-dressed nonlinear microring simultaneously emits spatiotemporal light springs consisting of 50 orbital angular momentum modes that are each spectrally addressed to the frequency components (longitudinal whispering gallery modes) of the generated microcomb. We further experimentally generate optical pulses with time-varying orbital angular momenta by carefully introducing a specific intermodal phase relation to spatiotemporal light springs. This work may immediately boost the development of integrated nonlinear/quantum photonics for exploring fundamental optical physics and advancing photonic quantum technology.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">It has been over 30 years since the concept of optical vortices was first proposed by Coullet et al. in 1989, and the field of structured beams has grown extremely. In the last two decades, partially coherent vortex beams (PCVBs) have received increasing interest in the fields of optical manipulation, optical communication, optical imaging, etc., and great progress has been made in the area of the coherence singularities, generation methods, topological charge measurements, and promising applications of PCVBs. In this review, we firstly outline the basic concepts of PCVBs. We explicate the relationship between the coherence vortices and optical vortices, and the evolution behavior of optical vortices to coherence vortices is summarized in detail. We discuss a special form of coherence singularity, ring dislocation, mathematically and physically. The ring dislocation in the correlation functions under low coherence is dependent on the mode indices, which provide a feasible approach to measure mode indices of PCVBs. Subsequently, we summarize the various methods for measuring the topological charge of PCVBs, highlight the measurement method based on the cross-correlation function, and a physical explanation on the relation between ring dislocation and topological charge is given. After that, we review the recent advances on experimental generation of several kinds of PCVBs. Lastly, we give an overview on the potential applications of PCVBs.</p>

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a type of continuous phase vortex gratings (CPVGs), which are able to generate a series of vortex beams with equal or proportional diffracted energies and different topological charges (TCs). A set of CPVGs with dimensions (60 × 60 × 1.1 μm3) are directly designed by mathematical equations, which avoids the use of iterative algorithms. The CPVGs are fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) with photoresist, and the experimentally generated vortex beams are in good agreement with the theoretical designs, exhibiting high optical efficiencies. In addition, we realized a CPVG onto the tip of a composite fiber for integrated optical systems. Our work paves the way for applications in optical communications, optical manipulations, and high-performance integrated optics.

Abstract:A Twist of Light The angular momentum of photons can be used to encode and transmit information. Cai et al. (p. 363 ) developed a method for generating and emitting controllable orbital angular momentum states of light from a reconfigurable and scalable silicon photonic chip. Using micro-ring resonators embedded with angular gratings allowed the imprinting of optical angular momentum on the light propagating in the whispering gallery modes of the resonator. The method may enable large-scale integration of optical vortex emitters on complementary metal-oxide–semiconductor-compatible silicon chips.

Coherent beam combining of optical vortices

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the power scaling of optical vortices by the coherent beam combining, encompassing topological charges ranging from l=1 to l=5 realized on the basis of a Yb-doped fiber short-pulsed laser system. The combining efficiency varies from 83.2 to 96.9% depending on the topological charge and beam pattern quality generated by the spatial light modulators. These results open a pathway to high-intensity optical vortices with enormous potential applications in science and industry by utilizing advances in light-matter interactions.

Abstract:A new scheme for producing semidiscrete self-trapped vortices (\textquotedblleft swirling photon droplets\textquotedblright ) in photonic crystals with competing quadratic ($\chi ^{(2)}$) and self-defocusing cubic ($\chi ^{(3)}$) nonlinearities is proposed. The photonic crystal is designed with a striped structure, in the form of spatially periodic modulation of the $\chi ^{(2)}$ susceptibility, which is imposed by the quasi-phase-matching technique. Unlike previous realizations of semidiscrete optical modes in composite media, built as combinations of continuous and arrayed discrete waveguides, the semidiscrete vortex droplets are produced here in the fully continuous medium. This work reveals that the system supports two types of semidiscrete vortex droplets, \textit{viz}., onsite- and intersite-centered ones, which feature, respectively, odd and even numbers of stripes, $\mathcal{N}$. Stability areas for the states with different values of $\mathcal{N}$ are identified in the system's parameter space. Some stability areas overlap with each others, giving rise to multistability of states with different $\mathcal{N}$. The coexisting states are mutually degenerate, featuring equal values of the Hamiltonian and propagation constant. An experimental scheme to realize the droplets is outlined, suggesting new possibilities for the long-distance transmission of structured light carrying orbital angular momentum in nonlinear media.

Generation of optical toroidal vortex with circular asymmetric gratings

Abstract:Toroidal vortex, a topological structure commonly observed in nature, exist in various types such as bubbles produced by dolphins and the air flow surrounding a flying dandelion. A toroidal vortex corresponds to a spatiotemporal wave packet in the shape of a donut that propagates in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the ring. In this work, we propose a circular asymmetric grating to generate vortex rings. A cylindrical vector wave packet is transformed by the device into a transmitted toroidal vortex pulse. Such a compact toroidal vortex generator may find applications in optical topology research and high-dimensional optical communications.

Abstract:Perfect optical vortices enable the unprecedented optical multiplexing utilizing orbital angular momentum of light, which, however, suffer from distortion when they propagate in inhomogeneous media. Herein, we report on the experimental demonstration of perfect optical vortice generation through strongly scattering media. The transmission-matrix-based point-spread-function engineering is applied to encode the targeted mask in the Fourier domain before focusing. We experimentally demonstrate the perfect optical vortice generation either through a multimode fiber or a ground glass, where the numerical results agree well with the measured one. Our results might facilitate the manipulation of orbital angular momentum of light through disordered scattering media and shed new light on the optical multiplexing utilizing perfect optical vortices.
Engineering Arbitrarily Oriented Spatiotemporal Optical Vortices Using Transmission Nodal Lines

Abstract:It has been recently demonstrated that optical pulses can hold transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM). Generation of such vortices typically requires bulky optics, and only OAMs that are fully longitudinal or transverse have been demonstrated until now. Here we investigate a general family of spatiotemporal vortices with arbitrarily oriented OAM and introduce a compact device for its generation. The device operates by having a transmission nodal line, which is a topological defect in the wavevector-frequency spectra of the transmission coefficient. We show that the position and dispersion of the transmission nodal line can be controlled by structural symmetry of the device. By transmitting a Gaussian pulse through the device, we can generate spatiotemporal vortices with its nodal line and OAM oriented along any arbitrary direction. This ability to generate a full family of spatiotemporal vortex pulses may find application in pulse shaping or sensing in the spatiotemporal domain. Our work also provides a novel approach of engineering topological response functions in photonic crystal slabs.

Abstract:Liquid-crystal fork gratings are demonstrated through photopatterning realized on a DMD-based microlithography system. Abstract:A high-efficiency technique for optical vortex（OV） generation is proposed and demonstrated. The technique is based on liquid crystal fork gratings with space-variant azimuthal orientations, which are locally controlled via polarization-sensitive alignment layers. Thanks to the optical rewritability of the alignment agent and the dynamic image generation of the digital micro-mirror device, fork gratings can be instantly and arbitrarily reconfigured.Corresponding optical vortices carrying arbitrary azimuthal and radial indices are demonstrated with a conversion efficiency of 98.5%, exhibiting features of polarization control and electrical switching. The technique may pave a bright road toward OV generation, manipulation, and detection.

Abstract:Synergistic control of the frequency and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light offers new opportunities for the generation of spatio-temporal optical waveforms and optical metrology. However, their physical realizations are typically bulky and complex owing to challenges in creating, manipulating and detecting mutually coherent, high-dimensional OAM states. Here we achieve combined control over the frequency and the OAM of a comb structure on a photonic chip. Dissipative optical solitons are formed in a nonlinear ring microresonator and emitted owing to engraved angular gratings, with each comb line carrying a distinct OAM. The beam of such a vortex soliton microcomb manifests dynamically revolving, double-helical intensity profiles. The one-to-one correspondence between the OAM and frequencies features a high extinction ratio of over 18.5 dB, enabling precision spectroscopy of optical vortices. Our work provides an integrated solution for realizing coherent light sources that are multiplexed in the spatial and frequency domains, with the potential to establish a new approach to the generation of high-dimensional structured light. Nonlinear microring resonators can generate a vortex soliton microcomb, that is, a frequency comb with each comb line carrying a distinct orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:Emerging applications based on optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum will likely require photonic integrated devices and circuits for miniaturization, improved performance and enhanced functionality. Recently we demonstrated a novel emitter of cylindrical optical vortex beams that carry photonic orbital angular momentum. The emitter consisted of a whispering gallery mode resonator embedded with gratings in the azimuthal angular dimension. This method can be generalized to produce other types of structured light beams that have some kind of cylindrical symmetry. The applications potentials and challenges in the devices in optical communications, quantum information systems, and optical sensing, imaging, and manipulation systems are also discussed.
