Abstract:In this letter, we present a scalable high-speed W-band (75-110-GHz) fiber wireless communication system. By using an optical frequency comb generator, three-channel 8.3-Gb/s/ch optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OOFDM) baseband signals in a 15-GHz bandwidth are seamlessly translated from the optical to the wireless domain. The W-band wireless carrier is generated from heterodyne mixing the OOFDM baseband signal with a free-running laser. A W-band electronic down-converter and a digital signal processing-based receiver are used. Three-channel QPSK-OFDM W-band wireless signals are transmitted over 0.5- and 2-m air distance with and without 22.8-km single-mode fiber, respectively, with achieved performance below the forward error correction limit.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) in the 1.65 µm wavelength band are promising for methane sensing and extended high-capacity optical communications. In this work, a frequency-modulated (FM) OFC is generated from a 1.65 µm single-section quantum well laser. This is characterized by a 1 kHz-wide beatnote signal at ∼19.4 GHz. Typical FM optical spectra are shown and optical linewidth of the OFC narrows through the mutual injection locking process in the comb formation. No distinct pulse train is observed on oscilloscope, which conforms with the FM operation. Furthermore, to add further evidence that four-wave mixing (FWM) is the driving mechanism of the comb formation, FWM frequency conversion characterization is conducted on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fabricated together with the tested laser. An efficiency of ∼-30 dB confirms the capability of FM mode locking.

Abstract:A simple method to generate millimeter-wave signal is proposed and demonstrated. In our scheme, by configuring a multiple modulation loop, a wideband optical comb with good stability is obtained, and then the millimeter-wave signal is generated based on the beating in a high-speed photodetector of the optical carrier and the nth-order optical sideband filtered out by a Fabry-Perot filter. The experiments are demonstrated and 60 GHz millimeter wave with narrow linewidth is easily generated.

Abstract:A highly linear W-band receiver front-end based on higher-order optical sideband (OSB) processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Two-tone analysis shows that by manipulating higher-order OSBs, the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) introduced by optoelectronic components (mainly modulators) in the receiver front-end can be further suppressed, and a 9 dB improvement of the ratio of the fundamental and IMD3 can be attained. In the experiment, the spurious-free dynamic range of the W-band receiver front-end is up to 122.1 dB.Hz(2/3), with improvement by 9 dB compared with that of only processing the five OSBs.

Abstract:A photonic approach to implementing a microwave channelized receiver based on dense wavelength division multiplexing using an optical comb is proposed. In the approach, a flat optical comb with 11 comb lines is generated using two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators. Frequency analysis of a microwave signal with multiple-frequency components is realized by using the optical comb together with an optical etalon with a periodic transfer function, a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and a photodetector array. The system is investigated numerically. Frequency measurement of a multi-frequency signal with a measurement range from 0.5-11.5 with an accuracy of ±0.5GHz is achieved. The reconfigurability of the system realized by tuning the comb-line spacing and the peak positions of the etalon is also evaluated. The improvement of the dynamic range of the system using an optimized periodic filter is also discussed.

Abstract:Steadily increasing data rates of optical interfaces require spectrally efficient coherent transmission using higher-order modulation formats in combination with scalable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) schemes. At the transmitter, optical frequency combs (OFC) lend themselves to particularly precise multi-wavelength sources for WDM transmission. In this work we demonstrate that these advantages can also be leveraged at the receiver by using an OFC as a highly scalable multi-wavelength local oscillator (LO) for coherent detection. In our experiments, we use a pair of OFC that rely on gain switching of injection-locked semiconductor lasers both for WDM transmission and intradyne reception. We synchronize the center frequency and the free spectral range of the receiver comb to the transmitter, keeping the intradyne frequencies for all data channels below 15 MHz. Using 13 WDM channels, we transmit an aggregate line rate (net data rate) of 1.104 Tbit/s (1.032 Tbit/s) over a 10 km long standard single mode fiber at a spectral efficiency of 5.16 bit/s/Hz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of coherent WDM transmission using synchronized frequency combs as light source at the transmitter and as multi-wavelength LO at the receiver.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach for generating a wideband optical frequency comb (OFC) featuring multiple comb lines and wavelength tunability based on a gain-switched weak-resonant-cavity Fabry–Perot laser diode (WRC-FPLD) under multi-wavelength optical injection. The longitudinal mode interval of the utilized WRC-FPLD is about 0.28 nm (35.0 GHz), and its relaxation oscillation frequency is about 2.0 GHz at 1.15 times the threshold current. Under current modulation with a power of 20.00 dBm and a frequency of 2.0 GHz, the WRC-FPLD is driven into the gain-switched state. By further introducing multi-wavelength injection light (MWIL) containing four power equalization comb lines with an interval of 0.56 nm, a wideband OFC featuring multiple comb lines and wavelength tenability can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that by gradually increasing the injection's optical power, the number of produced OFC lines initially increases and then decreases. By meticulously adjusting the wavelengths of the MWIL and carefully selecting the matched injection power, the broadband OFC can be tuned across an extensive spectral range. Under optimized operation parameters, an OFC with 147 lines, and a bandwidth of approximately 292 GHz within a 10 dB amplitude, variation is achieved. In this case, the measured single-sideband phase noise at the fundamental frequency is about −115 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz, indicating that the comb lines possess good stability and strong coherence.

Abstract:A frequency up/down-converter is proposed based on fiber-four-wave-mixing (FWM) between the output of a dual-wavelength fiber laser and the modulated optical carrier for bidirection radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Frequency, up-conversion from 1.50 to 11.08 GHz and down-conversion from 10.60 to 1.02 GHz are successfully demonstrated and a small efficiency difference between up- and down-conversions has been achieved. Abstract:This work presents an optical up-conversion system with frequency quadrupling for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) communication systems using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator without optical filtering. Four-channel 1.25-Gb/s wired fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) and wireless radio-over-fiber (RoF) signals are generated and transmitted simultaneously. Moreover, the decline in receiver sensitivities due to Mach-Zehnder modulator bias drifts is also investigated. Receiver power penalties of the 20-GHz up-converted WDM signals and baseband (BB) FTTx signals are less than 1 dB when bias deviation voltage is less the 20% of the half-wave voltage. After transmission over a 50-km SSMF, the receiver power penalties of both the BB and 20-GHz RF OOK signals are less than 1 dB. Notably, 60-GHz optical up-conversion can be achieved using 15-GHz radio frequency (RF) components and equipment.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally a novel scheme to realize all-optical up-conversion and wavelength-conversion based on the bi-directional-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs).The pump is generated with optical carrier suppression in a Mach-Zehnder modulator.The two pumps are always parallel and phase-locked.A balance-detection photo-detector for optical signal detection is employed with 3-dB improvement in power penalty.The 2.5-Gb/s signals are transmitted successfully over the 25-km single-mode fiber in 30-GHz radio over fiber (ROF) systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel spectrum stitching method for broadband linear frequency-modulated waveform (LFMW) generation. An optical frequency comb (OFC) is modulated by a narrowband LFMW whose bandwidth matches the free spectral range of the OFC. Optical injection locking is employed in extracting one broadband frequency sweeping component from the modulated OFC. In this way, seamless spectrum stitching is realized and a broadband LFMW with a multi-fold time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is obtained. Our scheme has a simple structure, which requires only a single OFC, a modulation module and a baseband waveform generator. An LFMW as broad as 20 GHz is generated from a baseband LFMW with 2GHz bandwidth experimentally. The TBWP is 100 times as large as that of the baseband LFMW. Moreover, the power fluctuation and the phase jumps are both eliminated, ensuring an excellent pulse compression performance. Benefiting from the injection locking technique, the linearity reaches 2.0 × 10-6. The central frequency tuning ability of our scheme is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel approach using two cascaded intensity modulators and one single dual-parallel modulator to generate an optical frequency comb (OFC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. One broadband OFC with rectangular envelope can be achieved easily by adjusting the power of the microwave signals and the direct current bias applied to the modulators. The scheme is a relatively simple and low-power consumption solution for OFC generation, where specially tailored waveforms and high-power microwave signals are not used. In the experiment, 20 comb lines within 0.6dB spectral power variation are obtained at 10GHz microwave frequency. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculation.

Abstract:We propose a highly linear radio-over-fiber system with low intermodulation distortion (IMD) using a single-drive dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (SD-DPMZM). The optical carrier is modulated in one of the two parallel modulators, while remaining unmodulated in the other one. There exists optimal working points for SD-DPMZM that makes its two kinds of origins of third-order IMD (IMD3) have opposite phase and equal intensity, and cancel each other; hence the output IMD3 is suppressed dramatically. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a spurious-free dynamic range of up to 122.9 dB · Hz2/3, which is in agreement with the theoretical analysis. It is about 20 dB more than a conventional MZM. The error vector magnitude of the proposed scheme, for a 16-QAM 10-MSym/s signal centered at 4 GHz, is 1.94%.
Generation of linear frequency-modulated signals with improved time-bandwidth product based on an optical frequency comb

Abstract:A generation scheme for the linear frequency-modulated (LFM) signals with tunable carrier frequency and improved time-bandwidth product (TBWP) using an optical frequency comb (OFC) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) time delay line is proposed and demonstrated by simulation. In the scheme, intensity modulation is used to convert the continuous time-domain waveform to an optical pulse with a duty cycle of one-sixteenth, and two cascaded polarization modulators driven by two different radio frequency signals are used to generate 16-line OFC without an optical filter. Then the 16-line OFC is injected into the FBG time delay line, which consists of 16 discrete FBGs, and each spectral line is reflected by the specific FBG after different time delays. By properly designing the position of the FBGs, the 16 spectral lines of the 16-line OFC are separated in the time domain. The time-separated OFC is then modulated by a phase modulator driven by a periodic parabolic signal for introducing parabolic phase modulation. Subsequently, after the heterodyne beating between the phase-modulated optical signal and the local oscillator light wave emitted from a tunable laser source (TLS) in a photodiode, an electrical LFM signal with improved TBWP is generated. Simulation results show that the generated LFM signal has the bandwidth of 31.78 GHz and TBWP of 1365.33, and its center frequency can be tuned by varying the wavelength of the TLS.
