Abstract:An experimental study on the particulate emissions of three GDI cars and one PFI car is conduc-ted with NEDC cycle. The particle mass emission and particle number emission are measured by using PMP method while the transient particle number emission and particle size distribution are measured with DMS500 fast particle analyzer. The results show that the particle mass emissions from four cars all meet the requirements of Euro VI regu-lation, but the particle number emissions from GDI cars far exceed the regulation limit value. There is a large a-mount of particulates emitted from both GDI and PFI cars during cold start warm-up stage, and for GDI car there still exists apparent particulate emission even after the engine has warmed up. The peak diameter of nucleation par-ticulates from GDI car is about 18nm, and the majority of particulates is accumulation ones with a peak diameter of about 80nm;while for PFI car, the peak diameter of accumulation particulates is around 60nm, and that of nuclea-tion particulates, the majority of particulates, is around 12nm.
[Number Concentration and Size Distribution of Particles Emitted by Light-duty Gasoline Vehicles].

Abstract:In this study, three GDI (gasoline direct injection) and one PFI (port fuel injection) light-duty gasoline vehicles were characterized for their particle emission (number concentration and size distributions). Two condensation particle counters (CPC) with different activation efficiencies (50% cut off diameter) were used. It was found that the number concentration of particles emitted by GDI gasoline vehicle was approximately one order of magnitude higher than that from PFI gasoline vehicle. High emission of particles occurred within the first 200 s of cold start. The number concentration of particles emitted from GDI vehicle was largely influenced by the vehicle working condition, while that of PFI vehicle was relatively stable despite of varying working conditions. The size distributions of particles emitted from GDI and PFI vehicles had both nucleation mode and accumulation mode. The peak diameter of nucleation mode particles was in the range of 20-27 nm, while that of accumulation mode particle was in the range of 80-95 nm. The number concentrations measured by the UCPC (50% cut off diameter of 2.5 nm) were 35% (GDI) and 50.4% (PFI), respectively, higher than those measured by the CPC (50% cut off diameter of 23 nm) used by the regulation.
Morphology and composition of particles emitted from a port fuel injection gasoline vehicle under real-world driving test cycles

Abstract:Traffic vehicles, many of which are powered by port fuel injection (PFI) engines, are major sources of particulate matter in the urban atmosphere. We studied particles from the emission of a commercial PFI-engine vehicle when it was running under the states of cold start, hot start, hot stabilized running, idle and acceleration, using a transmission electron microscope and an energy-dispersive X-ray detector. Results showed that the particles were mainly composed of organic, soot, and Ca-rich particles, with a small amount of S-rich and metal-containing particles, and displayed a unimodal size distribution with the peak at 600 nm. The emissions were highest under the cold start running state, followed by the hot start, hot stabilized, acceleration, and idle running states. Organic particles under the hot start and hot stabilized running states were higher than those of other running states. Soot particles were highest under the cold start running state. Under the idle running state, the relative number fraction of Ca-rich particles was high although their absolute number was low. These results indicate that PFI-engine vehicles emit substantial primary particles, which favor the formation of secondary aerosols via providing reaction sites and reaction catalysts, as well as supplying soot, organic, mineral and metal particles in the size range of the accumulation mode. In addition, the contents of Ca, P, and Zn in organic particles may serve as fingerprints for source apportionment of particles from PFI-engine vehicles.
Characterizing start emissions of gasoline vehicles and the seasonal, diurnal and spatial variabilities in China

Abstract:Start emissions from gasoline light-duty passenger vehicles (LDPVs) remain an important source of emissions modeling. This study measured start emissions of gaseous pollutants and solid particle number based on dynamometer tests for a fleet of 111 LDPVs in China, and selected a portion of samples to be tested under low temperature or shorter soak conditions. The cold-start phase, defined to follow soak durations of more than 6 h, typically lasts less than 200 s but accounts for a high proportion of total tailpipe emissions under the regulatory cycle (e.g., ~60% for China 6 CO emissions). Low temperature predominantly increases start emissions rather than hot-running emissions, and the increase ratios vary by pollutant and vehicle technology. Metrological data and soak duration profiles informed by a large sample of LDPVs were used to quantify the seasonal, diurnal and spatial variabilities of LDPV emissions across China. One notable case indicates that tailpipe THC emissions in January could be 283% higher than those in July for the fleet in Beijing, and the emissions peak in the morning rush hour during a day due to long overnight soak durations. This study provides a comprehensive dataset and useful tools for addressing the seasonal, diurnal and spatial variations in tailpipe emissions of gasoline vehicles in China, and has the potential to improve future emission inventories and air quality simulations.

Abstract:This paper investigated the physical and chemical properties of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine particulate matter (PM). The physical properties mainly included the particulate aggregate morphology, primary particle size, and internal nanostructure. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to obtain particle morphology information and to conduct image processing and analysis. The chemical characterization tests included X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive scanning (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). XPS can be used to observe the content of carbon and oxygen components and the surface carbon chemistry status, EDS can be used to obtain the elemental composition of particles, and TGA is used to analyze the oxidative kinetics of particles. Samples were collected from the exhaust emissions of a passenger vehicle compliant with China's VI emission standards under China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) test conditions. The study found that the particle morphology mainly comprised primary particles stacked on top of each other to form agglomerate structures, and the primary particles exhibited a core–shell structure. Analysis showed that carbon and oxygen were the predominant components of the particles, with other metallic elements also present. The XPS observations agreed with the FTIR results, indicating a small amount of oxygen was present on the particle surface and that the carbon components consisted mainly of sp2 hybridized graphite and sp3 hybridized organic carbon. The TGA results indicated high characteristic temperatures and low oxidation activity.

Abstract:Vehicle particle number (PN) emissions have attracted increasing public attention due to their severe influence on human health. In this study, we selected 35 light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) with gasoline direct injection (GDI) and multi-port fuel injection (MPFI) engines to elucidate the main factors influencing PN emissions. Via real driving emission (RDE) and chassis dynamometer tests, we quantified the impact of engine technology, emission standards, engine-start conditions and engine load on vehicle PN emissions. The RDE test results indicated that GDI vehicles generated higher PN emissions than those of MPFI vehicles under hot-running conditions. MPFI vehicle PN emissions were greatly affected by rapidly changing driving conditions, especially vehicles equipped with automatic start-stop systems. In regard to China 6 GDI vehicles equipped with a gasoline particle filter (GPF), their PN emissions were usually low, and peak PN emissions could mainly be attributed to GPF regeneration. Engine manufacturers should optimize GPF regeneration conditions to further reduce particulate emissions. Furthermore, the analysis results of PN emissions for different road types indicated that PN emissions were related to vehicle driving conditions. The vehicle specific power (VSP) could be used as an important explanatory variable to characterize the PN emission rate when distinguishing different engine technologies and emission standards. A real-world LDGV VSP-based PN emission rate was suggested based on the RDE test dataset. The VSP-based emission rate could be considered to more accurately quantify vehicle PN emissions and support the formulation of urban vehicle particle emission control policies.

Abstract:Air pollution is particularly severe in developing megacities, such as Beijing, where vehicles equipped with modern gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines are becoming one of major sources of the pollution. This study presents the characteristics of individual particles emitted by a GDI vehicle and their ageing in a smog chamber under the Beijing urban environment, as part of the Atmospheric Pollution & Human Health (APHH) research programme. Using transmission electron microscopy, we identified the particles emitted from a commercial GDI-engine vehicle running under various conditions, namely cold-start, hot-start, hot stabilized running, idle, and acceleration states. Our results showed that most of the particles were organic, soot, and Ca-rich ones, with small quantities of S-rich and metal-containing particles. In terms of particle size, the particles exhibited a bimodal distribution in number vs size, with one mode at 800–900 nm and the other at 140–240 nm. The numbers of organic particles emitted under hot-start and hot stabilized states were higher than those emitted under other conditions. The number of soot particles was higher under cold-start and acceleration states. Under the idle state, the proportion of Ca-rich particles was highest, although their absolute number was low. In addition to quantifying the types of particles emitted by the engine, we studied the ageing of the particles during 3.5 h of photochemical oxidation in an environmental chamber under the Beijing urban environment. Ageing transformed soot particles into core–shell structures, coated by secondary organic species, while the content of sulfur in Ca-rich and organic particles increased. Overall, the majority of particles from GDI-engine vehicles were organic and soot particles with submicron or nanometric size. The particles were highly reactive; they reacted in the atmosphere and changed their morphology and composition within hours via catalysed acidification that involved gaseous pollutants at high pollution levels in Beijing.Highlights. GDI-engine vehicles emitted a large amount of both primary and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Higher numbers of organic particles were emitted under hot stabilized running and hot-start states. Sulfate and secondary organic aerosol formed on the surface of primary particles after ageing. Particles aged rapidly by catalysed acidification under high pollution levels in Beijing.
Transient Characterization of Automotive Exhaust Emission from Different Vehicle Types Based on On-Road Measurements

Abstract:Previous works on real-world vehicle emission characteristics have mainly focused on the influences of fuel, speed, vehicle type, elevation, and other factors on vehicle emission quantity and components. However, few studies have investigated the transient trend of automotive exhaust emissions through on-road measurements. The key objective of the present paper was to examine the transient characteristics of exhaust emissions from different vehicle types on the roads of Tianjin. To achieve the goal, a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) was employed to monitor emissions from selected test vehicles—private cars, passenger vehicles, and cargo vehicles. It was found that the high-emission points of test vehicles were mainly distributed in two regions: the high-speed region (speed > 70–90 km/h, vehicle-specific power (VSP) > 0 kW/t) and the medium-speed–acceleration region (20–30 km/h < speed < 60–90 km/h, 0 kW/t <VSP < 12 kW/t). The CO, hydrocarbon (HC), NOx, and particulate number (PN) average emission rates in the high-emission points could be 3.15–14.93 times, 1.93–24.89 times, 3.23–6.03 times, and 3.22–30.27 times of those of average emission rates. The HC, NOx, and PN average emission rates of China IV vehicles in the high-emission points were 2.46–4.92 times, 3.56–6.03 times, and 3.22–13.21 times of those of average emission rates, not less than those of China III (1.93–2.52 times, 2.75–3.90 times, and 9.98–22.34 times). Test vehicles mainly emitted nucleation-mode and Aitken-mode particles, and the increase of the PN concentration emission rate in low-speed and high-speed regions was higher than that in the medium-speed region. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) + diesel particulate filter (DPF) could effectively inhibit the Aitken output caused by turbocharged intercooler (CIC). The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) might cause more nucleation-mode particles.

Abstract:The emphasis on environmental protection and energy security has promoted automobile engine technology toward low emission and economy. While the traditional port fuel injection engine can hardly meet the latest regulations and requirements, the gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine becomes a hot research topic because of its potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Since injection timing has a determining effect on overall engine performance, this paper aimed to investigate the injection timing effects on mixture formation and emissions. A validated three-dimensional numerical simulation model of a 4-stroke GDI engine combustion chamber was adopted. In a previous work (Part A), the in-cylinder combustion process has been discussed. In this study, the simulation results demonstrate that with the injection timing advancing, the fuel–gas mixture was more uniformly distributed and combusted more completely; the CO, UHC, and soot had decreased sharply by 80.6, 99.2, and 97.5%; the NOx emission increased by 151.7%. The optimized injection timing for this case was 300 CA BTDC. Moreover, this paper studied the in-cylinder views of injection timing effects on mixture formation and emission, providing reference to optimize injection of GDI engine.

Abstract:With an increasing market share of gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicles, high particulate emissions of GDI engines are of increasing concern due to their adverse impacts on both human health and the ecological environment. A thorough understanding of GDI nanoparticulate properties is required to develop advanced particulate filters and assess the exhaust toxicity and environmental impacts. To this end, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the physical and chemical characteristics of GDI nanoparticles from a distinctive perspective, including soot oxidation reactivity, morphology, nanostructure, surface chemistry, chemical components, and their correlations. This review begins with a brief description of nanoparticle characterisation methods. Then, the nanoparticle characteristics of GDI engines are reviewed with the following aspects: in-cylinder soot, exhaust particulate features, and a comparison between GDI and diesel nanoparticles. Previous studies showed that exhaust nanoparticle presents a more stable nanostructure and is less prone to oxidation if compared with in-cylinder soot. Additionally, GDI particles are less-ordered, more inorganic and metallic containing, and more reactive than diesel particles. Afterwards, the impacts of engine operating parameters and aftertreatments on GDI soot features are discussed in detail. Finally, the conclusions and future research recommendations are presented.
Sub-23 nm Particle Emissions from China-6 GDI Vehicle: Impacts of Drive Cycle and Ambient Temperature

Abstract:Both the EU and China are evaluating the feasibility of lowering the detection limit of particle number (PN) measurement to 10 nm in future legislations, making it necessary to better understand the sub-23 nm particle emission characteristics from state-of-the-art vehicles. In this study, solid PN emissions with a diameter larger than 10 nm and 23 nm (known as SPN10 and SPN23) were compared over the WLTC, RTS95, and a so-called "worst-case" real driving emission (RDE) cycle (highly dynamic/0 °C) using two certification-level particle number counters (PNCs) employing evaporation tube (ET) and catalytic stripper (CS) as volatile particle remover (VPR). The results show that SPN10 emissions were 31.7%, 27.8%, and 15.2% higher than SPN23 over the WLTC, RTS95, and laboratory RDE cycles. Sub-23 nm particles were almost not identified within the engine cold-start phase and tended to be a hot-running pollutant favored by aggressive driving styles (frequent accelerations and high engine loads), fuel-cut during decelerations, and long idles. Lower testing temperature delayed the light-off of catalyst and, therefore, significantly reduced the formation of sub-23 nm particles within the engine warm-up stage. Lowering the detection limit to 10 nm is deemed to provide more public health protection since it will guide manufacturers to pay more attention to vehicle hot-running emissions.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from vehicle exhaust is typically emitted at breathing height and thus imposes severe adverse effects on human health and air quality. However, there is currently limited knowledge on the characteristics of PM2.5 in exhaust, specifically its chemical components, at different ambient temperatures. Particulate emissions from typical light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) were investigated on a chassis dynamometer according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Test Cycle at ambient temperatures of 38 °C, 28 °C, 15 °C, 5 °C and - 7 °C. The results showed a significant increase in particulate mass (PM) and particle number (PN) emissions with decreasing ambient temperature, particularly during cold starts below 5 °C. The particle size distributions exhibited distinct bimodal patterns, with accumulation-mode (AM) particles (60-125 nm) dominating the gasoline direct injection (GDI) distribution and nucleation-mode (NM) particles (8-12 nm) dominating the port fuel injection (PFI) distribution. AM particles were more temperature-sensitive than NM particles. Lower temperatures produced higher emissions of elements, carbonaceous components, and large-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, while water-soluble ions showed an opposite trend. The total toxic equivalent, primarily influenced by benzo[a]pyrene, was significantly higher at -7 °C. The penalty distribution of LDGV PM and PN, defined by comparing the emissions at the various temperatures to those at regulated temperatures (23-30 °C), exhibited notable temporal heterogeneity (winter > autumn > spring > summer) and spatial heterogeneity (northern China > southern China). These findings are essential for establishing more stringent vehicle emission standards and improving emission models in cold environments.

Abstract:Vehicular particle number (PN) emissions have garnered increasing attention. In this study, nine light-duty vehicles, involving conventional internal combustion engine gasoline vehicles (ICEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), underwent testing on a chassis dynamometer to elucidate key factors influencing PN emissions. We found that with more stringent emission standards Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) vehicles exhibited a reduction in PN emission factors. Higher PN emissions for GDI vehicles than vehicles with Multi-Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines were observed; meanwhile, HEV showed lower PN emissions than ICEVs. PN emissions for cold start consistently exceeded warm start across vehicles with different standards and technologies. Notably, China VI HEV exhibited a substantial 19.2-fold increase in PN emissions for cold start compared to warm start. Analysis on a second-by-second basis revealed that cold-start emissions concentrated in low speed, while warm-start emissions were prominent in extra-high speed. Concerning vehicle specific power (VSP), the lowest mean PN emission rate occurred during idle conditions. PN emissions for China IV-VI ICEVs with GDI engines would increase with the increasing VSP, whereas China VI ICEVs with PFI engines and HEV with GDI engines showed varied patterns of PN emissions, especially under cold start. Our study would further facilitate formulating effective strategies for vehicular PN emissions.

An Analysis on the Microstructure and Oxidation Characteristics of Particles from Diesel Engine in Exhaust Gas Transport Process

Abstract:In order to investigate the evolvement rule of particle micro structure and oxidation characteristics in the transport process through exhaust pipe, micro-orifice impactor sampling device MOUDI is used to collect par-ticles in different positions of exhaust pipe under the standard working condition of 186F diesel engine. Transmission electron microscope is used to take photos of particle morphology and analyze its structure parameters such as crys-tallite size, layer spacing, and bending rate;Raman spectroscopy combined with five bands fitting method is used to study the evolution rule of particle graphitization degree. Oxidation characteristics test is conducted and thermogravi-metric analyzer is used to analyze the oxidation characteristics of particles in transport process and the relationship between the structural parameters, graphitization degree and oxidation characteristics of particles is analyzed through normalization treatment. The results show that in the process of exhaust gas transport the ordering degree of crystallite arrangement of basic carbon granules in particles lowers, the boundaries of inner and outer cores of particle become blurred, the crystallite size of particles decreases and their layer spacing and average bending rate increase. The ID1/ID2 ratio of particle decreases by about 12. 9% while its ID1/IG ratio increases by around 38. 3%, indicating the low-ering of graphitization degree of particles in transport process. The apparent activation energy of particle decreases from 157. 3 kJ·mol-1 to 127. 9 kJ·mol-1 , its ignition temperature falls from 546℃ to 501℃, its combustion char-acteristic index increases from 8. 16×10-9 to 1. 62×10-8, and its burnout index rises from 0. 01097 to 0. 01256, demonstrating that the pyrolysis activation energy of particle lowers and particles are more easily oxidized.

Abstract:To grasp the primary particulate matter (PM) emissions and the corresponding secondary evolution of gasoline direct injection (GDI) vehicles, an innovative combination system of chassis dynamometer and multipoint sampling (up to 4.5 m) was constructed. The exhaust plumes in the area near the exhaust gas discharge outlet were successfully captured. There were intense secondary formation processes. With the increase of dilution factors, the PM mass concentrations and particle number emissions of secondary particles gradually exceeded that of primary particles. Component analysis explored that the formation of both secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) occurred in the exhaust plume and SIA played a leading role. Secondary inorganic ions contributed 65.15 +/- 7.94% to PM2.5 at 4.5 m under 60 km/h, of which NH4+ and SO42- comprised the largest proportion. The contribution of secondary organic carbons was 20.89 +/- 2.90% in this case. Particle size distribution displayed that an additional peak appeared in the nucleation mode with the aging of exhaust plume. The generation of nucleation and Aitken mode particles dominated the increase of particle number emissions. The study is expected to modify the overestimation of primary PM and bridge the gap between observed and modeled SOA.

Abstract:Emissions from gasoline vehicles have recently become one of the main causes for urban air pollution. In this work, individual particles of particulate matter emitted from the gasoline engines on the test bench were characterised using transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (TEM-EDX). Effects of the engine types (gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines and port fuel injection (PFI) engines), fuel components (F1–5), engine loads (25, 50, and 75%), and three-way catalyst (TWC) on particulate emissions were tested. The results show that there were six types of individual particles emitted from gasoline engines including soot, organic particles, Fe-rich particles, S-rich particles, Mn-rich particles, and Ca-rich particles, in which the organic, soot, and S-rich particles were predominant types. The particles emitted from GDI engines had a higher percentage of soot and lower percentage of organic particles compared to those from PFI engines. Fuel types also influenced compositions of the emitted particles. F1 produced a relatively high percentage of organic particles. Compared to F1, F2 containing more aromatics contributed a higher percentage of soot particles; F3 containing MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) led to a considerably higher percentage of soot particles, and F4 gasoline (addition of 10% ethanol by volume) produced a lower percentage of soot particles. Compared to F1, F5 with a lower olefin content produced a lower percentage of organic particles. In addition, with increasing load, the relative percentages of soot increased, while the relative percentages of organic particles decreased. Finally, when TWC was used, the percentage of soot increased significantly in association with an increase in particle sizes.
Effects of ambient temperature and cold starts on excess NOx emissions in a gasoline direct injection vehicle

Abstract:Studies have demonstrated that vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines produce significantly higher emissions during a cold start than under hot-stabilized periods. A cold start is typically defined by the temperature of the engine or the catalytic converter; its extended effect on emissions, after the vehicle reaches the warm-up stage, has seldom been investigated. In this study, the influence of the post cold start period on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions was evaluated using real-world measurements. Vehicle on-board diagnostic data, fuel consumption, and emissions of multiple pollutants were collected on a 2020 GDI sports utility vehicle equipped with a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). A total of 31 trips, with two drives per day, were conducted along arterial roads and highways in Toronto, Canada. The results indicate that during the first trip of the day after an overnight soak, the average NOx emission rate was 0.27 g/litre and 0.037 g/km, 384% and 299% higher than the emission rate on the second trip of the day. The amount of trip total NOx emissions is positively associated with the length of the catalytic converter warm-up period with correlation coefficient 0.67. We also observe that the catalyst warm-up time is negatively correlated with ambient temperature, and a negative relationship between ambient temperature and NOx emissions throughout the trip is depicted with correlation coefficient -0.44. The measured data reveal an extended effect of the cold start on NOx emissions even after the temperatures of the engine coolant and catalyst reach a stable level.

Abstract:Identification of air toxics emitted from light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) is expected to better protect human health. Here, the volatile organic compound (VOC) and intermediate VOC (IVOC) emissions in the high-emitted start stages were measured on a chassis dynamometer under normal and extreme temperatures for China 6 LDGVs. Low temperature enhanced the emission rates (ERs) of both VOCs and IVOCs. The VOC ERs were averaged 5.19 ± 2.74 times higher when the temperature dropped from 23 °C to 0 °C, and IVOCs is less sensitive to temperature change with an enlargement of 2.27 ± 0.19 times. Aromatics (46.75 ± 2.83%) and alkanes (18.46 ± 1.21%) dominated the cold start VOC emissions under normal temperature, which was quite different from hot running emission profiles. From the perspective of emission inventories, changes in the speciated composition of VOCs and IVOCs were less important than that in the actual magnitude of ERs under cold conditions. However, changes in the ERs and emission profiles were equally important at high temperatures. Furthermore, high time-resolved measurements revealed that low temperature enhanced both the emission peak and peak diruation of fuel components and incomplete combustion products during cold start, while high temperature only increased the peak concentration of fuel components.

Abstract:Gasoline vehicles significantly contribute to urban particulate matter (PM) pollution. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, known for their higher fuel efficiency than that of port fuel injection (PFI) engines, have been increasingly employed in new gasoline vehicles. However, the impact of this trend on air quality is still poorly understood. Here, we investigated both primary emissions and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from a GDI and a PFI vehicle under an urban-like driving condition, using combined approaches involving chassis dynamometer measurements and an environmental chamber simulation. The PFI vehicle emits slightly more volatile organic compounds, e.g., benzene and toluene, whereas the GDI vehicle emits more particulate components, e.g., total PM, elemental carbon, primary organic aerosols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Strikingly, we found a much higher SOA production (by a factor of approximately 2.7) from the exhaust of the GDI vehicle than that of the PFI vehicle under the same conditions. More importantly, the higher SOA production found in the GDI vehicle exhaust occurs concurrently with lower concentrations of traditional SOA precursors, e.g., benzene and toluene, indicating a greater contribution of intermediate volatility organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds in the GDI vehicle exhaust to the SOA formation. Our results highlight the considerable potential contribution of GDI vehicles to urban air pollution in the future.

Abstract:A modified single-cylinder test engine was utilized in this study to figure out the effects of injection timing, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) additive on particle size distribution characteristics. The study was performed under gasoline compression ignition (GCI) mode, whose injection timing range was varied from −22 to −10 °CA ATDC under the examined condition, and particle size distributions were measured by an exhaust particle size spectrometer TSI EEPS 3090. The results showed that, the nuclei-mode highly dominates the particle size distribution, and the particle size corresponded to peak particle number tends to be uniformly distributed around 20 nm regardless of the combustion control parameters and fuel properties. A unimodal distribution is appeared without and with EGR, while the particle size distribution shifts to the larger size and peak particle number is lower with the advance of injection timing. Compared with the no EGR case, an overall increase of particle number can be observed by applying EGR. Furthermore, the peak particle number and particle number concentration can be greatly reduced by more than two orders of magnitude by adding 10% PODEn, but further increasing blending ratio of PODEn to 20% has much less effect. In a last step, indicated specific particle number (ISPN) was analyzed, suggesting that the ISPN of both total particles and particles smaller than 50 nm exhibits increase first and then decrease with the increase of EGR. Overall, the particle number control of GCI mode should be based on the well matching of combustion control parameters and fuel properties.
