Abstract:Although there have been many reports of metal doping to ameliorate the drawbacks of hematite as the photoanode for water oxidation, most of them focused on monometallic doping, and only a few of them payed attention to bimetallic doping. What is worse, the synergetic mechanism between two metal dopants was not sufficiently studied, especially the density functional theory(DFT) calculation. In this work, the n-type hematite was synthesized by introducing Ti dopant into hematite through the hydrothermal method, and dipping-sintering treatment was employed to further introduce homogeneously dispersed Zn dopant into that, forming the Ti, Zn co-doped hematite. Under the optimal condition, Tidoped hematite photoanode reached approximately 2-times enhancement of the photocurrent density compared with the pristine one at 1.23 V vs. RHE, while Ti, Zn co-doped hematite anode obtained another25% elevation. UV–Vis spectroscopy, Mott–Schottky plots, EIS analysis, photo-oxidation of hole scavenger(H 2 O 2 ), and DFT calculation were employed to understand the role of Ti, Zn dopant. Based on the obtained results, the synergetic mechanism of two dopants was discussed, i.e., the improvement of PEC performance of Ti, Zn co-doped hematite photoanode was possibly attributed to greater carrier density and improved charge separation efficiency at the surface of hematite. This work provides new strategy and understanding of the improvement of PEC performance of hematite by doping engineering.
The Influence of Ti Doping on Morphology and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Hematite Grown from Aqueous Solution for Water Splitting

Abstract:Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) is a promising material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the poor conductivity and short hole diffusion length have limited its energy conversion efficiency. Nanorod structure could improve the transport of charge carriers and increase the reaction sites. Herein, we have investigated the influence of Ti doping on the morphology change and find that insufficient precursor concentration is the main reason for the morphology deviation from the optimized nanorod structure. The photoelectrochemical performance of the Ti-doped nanorod hematite was investigated and optimized. Analysis shows Ti plays a crucial role in improving both the bulk charge separation and surface charge transfer. We have also analyzed the limiting factor of the performance and the corresponding solution. Our systematic investigation indicates that the electron transport is still a limiting factor for the PEC performance of hematite. Further improvement can be obtained through replenishing the Ti source during the nanorod growth, and by subsequent nitrogen treatment.
Understanding Hematite Doping with Group IV Elements: A DFT+U Study

Abstract:Si, Ge, or Sn doped hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) photoanodes show significantly enhanced efficiency for photo-oxidization of water. We employed DFT+U to study the doping of alpha-Fe2O3 with group IV elements, i.e., Si, Ge, and Sn. From the calculated formation energies and chemical potentials, three key points are concluded. (1) Low oxygen pressure is favored for doping both substitutional and interstitial dopants. (2) Substitutional doping of the Fe atom at the lattice site is more stable than interstitial doping in the octahedral vacancies. (3) Most interestingly, Ge doping is found to be easiest among the three dopants. This result contradicts intuition based on atomic size and indicates that Ge doping should be more efficient than Si and Sn doping in increasing the charge carrier concentration. Incorporation of the dopants at the Fe site generates an electron polaron and the dopant with the +4 valence state by spontaneous transfer of one electron from the dopant atom to a surrounding Fe atom, according to the analyses of charge transition energy levels and density of states. We identify the factors affecting the charge transfer process. The study elucidates the dopants role in increasing the electrical conductivity of alpha-Fe2O3 and provides guidelines for designing new efficient photoanodes.

Abstract:Hematite is a promising candidate as photoanode for solar-driven water splitting, with a theoretically predicted maximum solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ∼16%. However, the interfacial charge transfer and recombination greatly limits its activity for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Carbon dots exhibit great potential in photoelectrochemical water splitting for solar to hydrogen conversion as photosensitisers and co-catalysts. Here we developed a novel carbon underlayer from low-cost and environmental-friendly carbon dots through a facile hydrothermal process, introduced between the fluorine-doped tin oxide conducting substrate and hematite photoanodes. This led to a remarkable enhancement in the photocurrent density. Owing to the triple functional role of carbon dots underlayer in improving the interfacial properties of FTO/hematite and providing carbon source for the overlayer as well as the change in the iron oxidation state, the bulk and interfacial charge transfer dynamics of hematite are significantly enhanced, and consequently led to a remarkable enhancement in the photocurrent density. The results revealed a substantial improvement in the charge transfer rate, yielding a charge transfer efficiency of up to 80% at 1.25 V vs. RHE. In addition, a significant enhancement in the lifetime of photogenerated electrons and an increased carrier density were observed for the hematite photoanodes modified with a carbon underlayer, confirming that the use of sustainable carbon nanomaterials is an effective strategy to boost the photoelectrochemical performance of semiconductors for energy conversion.
Effect of Cr Doping on the Photoelectrochemical Performance of Hematite Nanorod Photoanodes

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanorod arrays modified by surface doping of chromium (III) ions (Cr3+) for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting are fabricated using a general process involving a combination of aqueous chemical growth and spin coating. The PEC activity of Cr-doped α-Fe2O3 nanorod films first increases then decreases with increasing dopant content. At the optimal content of Cr, Cr-doped α-Fe2O3 nanorod films exhibit about 3.5 and 6 times higher PEC activity than the undoped material under solar light (AM 1.5, 100mWcm−2) and visible light (λ>430nm) irradiation, respectively. A comprehensive characterization of the chemical, morphological, PEC, structural, and optical properties of the doped α-Fe2O3 films are presented to assess the mechanisms by which the dopants influence photoelectrode performance. The relationship between dopant content, photoluminescence intensity, and PEC performance suggests Cr doping alters charge transfer in the films under irradiation. At low Cr doping contents, Cr dopants act as electron (or hole) traps and retard photoinduced charge recombination, leading to enhanced PEC activity. Whereas, at high Cr doping contents, Cr dopants act as charge recombination sites and lower the charge separation efficiency, leading to decreased PEC activity. High temperature annealing proves to be effective for further improvement of the PEC activities of doped and undoped hematite films, by Sn diffusion.
Doping and Annealing Conditions Strongly Influence the Water Oxidation Performance of Hematite Photoanodes

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is one of the most promising semiconductors for solar water splitting due to its high theoretical efficiency and low cost. However, its poor electronic properties strongly limit its performance. Furthermore, the impact of composition and processing conditions on such properties, and on the water splitting efficiency, is poorly understood. Here, we unravel the role of these contributions, and provide guidelines for the fabrication of efficient hematite photoanodes. Aliovalent doping with tin and fluorine is found to improve the electrical conductivity of hematite, leading to higher performances. Annealing in inert atmosphere, which is conventionally used to create oxygen vacancies, is found not to affect undoped hematite. However, a marked effect has been observed in doped hematite, and a model describing dopant activation rather than oxygen vacancy formation has been proposed. The synergy between the presence of both dopants and the annealing conditions provides optimal electrical properties, that enable to increase the hematite thickness leading to enhanced light absorption, limiting the detrimental charge recombination issues observed in undoped films, or even in doped films processed in excess oxygen. Our work provides a deeper understanding of the interplay between all these processing factors, resulting in hematite photoanodes with increased performance.

Abstract:The limited conductivity in hematite has been currently considered as a critical bottleneck in improving the efficiency of solar-driven water oxidation. Here we shed light on the improvement of carrier conductivity by combing orientation control and transition metal doping. To rule out the influence of surface facets of hematite when adjusting the film orientation, the hematite photoanode films were fabricated by assembling the spherical particles with single crystalline nature. The doped hematite particles were aligned with (001) plane normal to the substrate by a magnetic field (MF) during the drop-casting process. A considerable improvement in photocurrent density was resulted from the orientation control, which is due to the increased carrier density from Sn doping and efficient charge transportation in the (001) plane observed through electrochemical impedance spectra.

Abstract:Doping elements in hematite nanostructures is a promising approach to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance of hematite photoanodes. However, uniform doping with precise control on doping amount and morphology is the major challenge for quantitatively investigating the PEC water-splitting enhancement. Here, we report on the design and synthesis of uniform titanium (Ti)-doped hematite nanorods with precise control of the Ti amount and morphology for highly effective PEC water splitting using an atomic layer deposition assisted solid-state diffusion method. We found that Ti doping promoted band bending and increased the carrier density as well as the surface state. Abstract:The improved photoactivity of Ta doped hematite, which was reported in our previous research, was studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and electrochemical measurement. The doping of Ta was calculated to produce slight changes in the local geometry of hematite crystal structure and have a low defect formation energy, indicating that the doping of Ta is energetically favorable and Ta impurity can be stably doped in hematite lattice to replace the Fe site (TaFe). The analysis of the electronic structure of Ta doped hematite indicates that the transition level of corresponding TaFe2+ defect (1.99 eV) lies below the conduction band minimum (CBM), meaning that the doping defect acts as shallow donor to provide more electron carrier, and thus improving the conductivity of hematite. The increased shallow donor density and the energy level induced by the doping of Ta were also confirmed by Mott-Schottky measurement.

Abstract:Herein, it is demonstrated that gradient Ti doping coupled with an overlayer of NiFeOx on hematite can markedly improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water‐splitting efficiency of hematite‐based photoanodes, which are prized from sustainability considerations but have met daunting challenges. First, the gradient Ti doping of hematite has effectively lowered the onset potential while maintaining the high efficiency of photo‐generated charge separation and transmission. Second, the NiFeOx layer not only substantially reduces the surface trap states, but also significantly enhances the oxygen evolution kinetics of hematite‐based photoanodes as an oxygen evolution catalyst, resulting in a further improvement of the onset potential. Consequently, with the TiO2 layer and a double electrode stack design, a remarkable photocurrent density of 4.49 mA cm−2 is achieved at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for NiFeOx/(Grad Ti)‐Fe2O3/TiO2 photoanode without any hole scavenger, delivering a high applied bias photo‐to‐current efficiency of up to 0.58% at 1 V versus RHE. This multipronged attack for improving PEC water‐splitting efficiency revitalizes the great promise of hematite photoanodes and sheds light on the design and development of the next‐generation photoelectrodes.
Ultrathin Hematite Photoanode with Gradient Ti Doping.

Abstract:The poor photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance derived from insufficient charge separation in hematite photoanode crucially limits its application. Gradient doping with band bending in a large region is then considered as a promising strategy, facilitating the charge transfer ability due to the built-in electric field. Herein, we developed a synthetic strategy to prepare gradient Ti-doped ultrathin hematite photoelectrode and systematically investigated its PEC performance. The as-synthesized electrode (1.5-6.0% doping level from the surface to the substrate) delivered a photocurrent of about 1.30 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is nearly 100% higher than that of homogeneously doped hematite electrode. The enhanced charge transfer property, induced by the energy band bending due to the built-in electric field, has been further confirmed by electrochemical measurements. This strategy of gradient doping should be adaptable and can be applied for other functional materials in various fields.

Abstract:Charge transport in the bulk and across the semiconductor/electrolyte interface is one of the major issues that limits photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance in hematite photoelectrodes. Efficient charge transport in the entire hematite is of great importance to obtaining high photoelectrochemical properties. Herein, to reach this goal, we employed both TiO2 underlayer and overlayer deposition on hematite nanorod films, followed by a fast annealing treatment. The TiO2 underlayer and overlayer not only serve as dopant sources for carrier density increase but also reduce charge recombination at the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/hematite interface and accelerate charge transfer across the hematite/electrolyte interface. This synergistic doping and interface modifying effects give rise to an enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance of hematite nanorod arrays, generating an impressive photocurrent density of 1.49 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs RHE. This is the first report on using both underlayer and overlayer modification with the same material to improve charge transport through the entire electron transport path in hematite, which provides a novel way to manipulate charge transfer across the semiconductor interface for a high-performance photoelectrode.

Abstract:Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3 photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3 alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3 and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is regarded as one of the most promising cost-effective and stable anode materials in photoelectrochemical applications, and its performance, like other transition-metal oxides, depends strongly on its electrical and defect properties. In this work, the electrical and thermomechanical properties of undoped and Sn-doped α-Fe2O3 nanoscale powders were characterized in situ at controlled temperatures ( T = 250 to 400 °C) and atmospheres ( pO2 = 10-4 to 1 atm O2) to investigate their transport and defect properties. Frequency-dependent complex impedance spectra show that interfacial resistance between particles is negligible in comparison with particle resistance. Detailed defect models predicting the dependence of electron, hole, and iron and oxygen vacancy concentrations on temperature and oxygen partial pressures for undoped and doped α-Fe2O3 were derived. Using these defect equilibria models, the operative defect regimes were established, and the bandgap energy of undoped α-Fe2O3 and oxidation enthalpy of Sn-doped α-Fe2O3 were obtained from the analysis of the temperature and pO2 dependence of the electrical conductivity. On the basis of these results, we are able to explain the surprisingly weak impact of donor doping on the electrical conductivity of α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, experimental means based on the results of this study are given for successfully tuning hematite to enhance its photocatalytic activity for the water oxidation reaction.

Abstract:Hematite is composed of iron and oxygen elements, and the iron-oxygen spatial distribution would affect directly its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. However, less work has focused on the effect of iron-oxygen composition on the characteristic of charge transport and interfacial reaction. Here, we investigated the charge transfer and interface reaction of two typical iron-oxygen compositions of hematite prepared from the precursors of Fe and FeOOH in which different iron-oxygen ratios were obtained. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etching confirms that different precursors do cause differences in spatial elemental composition after thermal treatment. For Fe precursors, oxygen deficiency in the bulk is responsible for its lower bulk efficiency, whereas the defect-free surface results in a high surface separation efficiency and a low interfacial reaction catalysis rate. The FeOOH precursor forms an oxygen-rich surface and, therefore, introduces a large number of surface hole traps. Excessive traps significantly hinder surface charge separation and transport but favor surface electrocatalytic kinetics. Our work provides a perspective on the relationship between the semiconductor electrode performance and its structure and provides effective guidance for further optimization.
Engineered Sn- and Mg-doped hematite photoanodes for efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Abstract:A feasible and cost-effective method was developed to improve the photoelectrochemical performance of the hematite (α-Fe2O3) photoanode. Using a hydrothermal method, tin (Sn) and magnesium (Mg) (co-)doped hematite films were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. The average particle size of the α-Fe2O3 film varied from 150 to 300 nm. The photocurrent density of Sn-/Mg-co-doped α-Fe2O3 reached a maximum of 1.1 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE, which increased approximately 3 times compared to that of pristine α-Fe2O3. It also yielded a maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of 0.09% at 1.08 V vs. RHE. The excellent PEC activity could be attributed to Mg co-doping relieving the lattice distortion caused by Sn doping, and improving both the charge injection efficiency and charge separation efficiency without obviously changing the carrier concentration, which was proved by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This promising co-doping strategy could also be extended to other candidatephotoelectrodes.

Abstract:We report a facile approach to perform post-growth doping of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanostructures by depositing titanium (Ti) precursor solution and subsequent annealing in air. Using hematite nanowire photoanodes on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates as a model system, the doping conditions were carefully optimized and highly photoactive hematite photoanodes were prepared at a more practically acceptable temperature of 650–700 °C than the ≥800 °C commonly used in previous works. A combination of microstructural characterization, elemental analysis, photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis were employed to confirm the distribution of Ti atoms in hematite nanostructures and the role of Ti dopants in enhancing the photocurrent of hematite photoanodes. It was found that the Ti-treatment increases the donor concentration of hematite by about 10 fold and facilitates majority carrier transport and collection, which may account for the performance enhancement. Moreover, EIS measurements under illumination and Mott–Schottky analysis clearly showed that Ti dopants interact with the surface trap states of hematite, suggesting that surface passivation may also contribute to the improved PEC performance. This facile post-growth doping method can be applied to other hematite nanostructures such as electrochemically deposited hematite films and expanded to other dopants such as zirconium (Zr).

Abstract:Aiming at the drawbacks of hematite like poor conductivity and tardy oxidation kinetics, herein, we utilized dual dopants in the bulk and surface to ameliorate the situation. Specifically, doping optimal amount of Zr4+ in the hematite (Zr:Fe2O3) enhances the conductivity of hematite due to the higher charge carrier density. Further, F:FeOOH could form p-n heterojunction in bulk where a potential barrier is built up that repels electrons but prompts holes transferring to F:FeOOH for water oxidation. What's more, the high electronegative of F- would withdraw electron from the Fe site in FeOOH, and the enhanced positive electricity of Fe3+ is beneficial for adsorption of OH- as well as enhance the conductivity of FeOOH to expedite holes transfer. As a result, the composite photoanode (F:FeOOH/Zr:Fe2O3) shows a 3.25-times enhanced photocurrent density comparing with α-Fe2O3. The special designation employs ultrathin F:FeOOH to act as both p-type semiconductor and efficient co-catalyst, avoiding redundant layer that would extend the migration distance of holes. On the top of that, the dual modification approach provides an extensive prospect for the further application of hematite.

Abstract:Solar water splitting is an environmentally friendly reaction of producing hydrogen gas. Since Honda and Fujishima first demonstrated solar water splitting in 1972 by using semiconductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) as photoanode in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell, extensive efforts have been invested into improving the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency and lower the production cost of photoelectrochemical devices. In the last few years, hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanostructures have been extensively studied as photoanodes for PEC water splitting. Although nanostructured hematite can improve its photoelectrochemical water splitting performance to some extent, by increasing active sites for water oxidation and shortening photogenerated hole path length to semiconductor/electrolyte interface, the photoactivity of pristine hematite nanostructures is still limited by a number of factors, such as poor electrical conductivities and slow oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Previous studies have shown that tin (Sn) as an n-type dopant can substantially enhance the photoactivity of hematite photoanodes by modifying their optical and electrical properties. In this thesis, I will first demonstrate an unintentional Sn-doping method via high temperature annealing of hematite nanowires grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate to enhance the donor density. In addition to introducing extrinsic dopants into semiconductors, the carrier densities of hematite can also be enhanced by creating intrinsic defects. Oxygen vacancies function as shallow donors for a number of hematite. In this regard, I have investigated the influence of oxygen content on thermal decomposition of FeOOH to induce oxygen vacancies in hematite. In the end, I have studied low temperature activation of hematite nanostructures.
