Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor based on carbon dots has been synthesized via bonding rhodamine B hydrazide to the carbon dots surface by an amide reaction. The ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor showed only a single blue fluorescence emission around 450 nm. While, as mercury ion was added, due to the open-ring of rhodamine moiety bonded on the CDs surface, the orange emission of the open-ring rhodamine would increase obviously according to the concentration of mercury ion, resulting in the distinguishable dual emissions at 450 nm and 575 nm under a single 360 excitation wavelength. Meanwhile, the ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor based on carbon dots we prepared is more sensitive to qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of mercury ion in the range of 0–100 μM, because fluorescence changes gradually from blue to orange emission under 365 nm lamp with the increasing of mercury ion in the tested solution.

Abstract:A novel nanohybrid ratiometric fluorescence sensor is developed for selective detection of mercuric ions (Hg(2+)), and the application has been successfully demonstrated in HEPES buffer solution, lake water, and living cells. The sensor comprises water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) and exhibits their corresponding dual emissions peaked at 437 and 575 nm, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength (350 nm). The photoluminescence of the CNPs in the nanohybrid system can be completely quenched by Hg(2+) through effective electron or energy transfer process due to synergetic strong electrostatic interaction and metal-ligand coordination between the surface functional group of CNPs and Hg(2+), while that of the RhB remains constant. This results in an obviously distinguishable fluorescence color variation (from violet to orange) of the nanohybrid solution. This novel sensor can effectively identify Hg(2+) from other metal ions with relatively low background interference even in a complex system such as lake water. The detection limit of this method is as low as 42 nM. Furthermore, the sensing technique is applicable to detect Hg(2+) in living cells.

Abstract:Mercury (II) ions (Hg2+), as one of the most toxic heavy metals, can cause irreversible damage to human health even at very low concentration due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation. Herein, a facile ratiometric fluorescence nanomixture based on carbon dots‑gold nanoclusters (CDs-Au NCs) was constructed for quantitative detection of Hg2+. Lysine functionalized carbon dots (CDs) were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method, while gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) were synthesized via using chicken egg white (CEW) as reducer and stabilizer. The novel nanomixture exhibited two strong emission peaks at 450 nm and 665 nm under 390 nm excitation, and showed pink fluorescence under UV light. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the CDs-Au NCs nanomixture was selectively response to Hg2+. The fluorescence of Au NCs at 665 nm was decreased when Hg2+ was presented in the solution, while the fluorescence of CDs at 450 nm stayed constant. The fluorescence color changed from pink to blue obviously with increasing the concentration of Hg2+, which indicated that CDs-Au NCs could be used for visual detection Hg2+ by the naked eye. Under optimal conditions, this ratiometric fluorescent sensor could detect Hg2+ accurately and possess a great sensitivity with a detection limit of 63 nM. In addition, this method was applied to detect Hg2+ in real water samples with great recoveries, suggesting its potential in practical application with simplicity, environmentally friendly and low cost.

Abstract:Herein, we first reported a facile synthesis method for fabrication of highly photoluminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using sodium alginate as the carbon source and histidine as both the nitrogen source and functional monomer by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. The as-prepared CQDs gave a high quantum yield of 32%. By employing the new CQDs and rhodamine B (RhB), we demonstrated a simple, facile, sensitive, and accurate ratiometric sensor for detection of Hg2+ and biological thiols. The photoluminescence of CQDs in the ratiometric sensor can be selectively and intensively suppressed by Hg2+ due to strong electrostatic interaction between the surface functional groups of the CQDs and Hg2+. When glutathione (GSH) was introduced into the “Turn Off” CQDs-RhB-Hg2+ sensing system, the fluorescence of the CQDs can be recovered rapidly due to the stronger affinity between thiol and Hg2+, while the fluorescence of the RhB remained constant in this sensing process. Based on the above principle, the ratiometric strategy for detecting Hg2+ and GSH can be achieved readily, and gives satisfactory limit of detections (LODs) of 30 and 20 nM for Hg2+ and GSH, respectively. The dual-emission fluorescent CQDs-RhB sensor does not need the complicated molecular design and the synthesis of dual-emission fluorophores. Meanwhile, the feasibility of the proposed method for analysis of water samples, food samples, and biological samples (plasma from mice oxidative stress study) was investigated. Abstract:The authors describe a carbon dot (CD) based dual-emission ratiometric optical probe for the on-site visual and fluorometric determination of mercury(II) ions. The nanoparticle (NP) probe was obtained by covalently linking the blue emissive carbon dots to the surface of silica nanoparticles containing red-emissive quantum dots (QDs). The red emitting QDs in the silica matrix are inert to Hg(II) and provide a reliable and constant reference signal. They also reduce their toxicity and improve the optical and chemical stabilities, while the blue emission CDs are very sensitive to Hg(II). With increasing concentration of Hg(II), a solution containing the NP probe undergoes a continuous color change from light purple to red. This can be seen with bare eyes or detected instrumentally by measurement of fluorescence intensity under excitation/emission wavelengths of 350/453 and 658 nm. The probe exhibits high sensitivity to Hg(II), with a detection limit of 0.47 nM (at an S/N ratio of 3). This is much lower than the allowable level of mercury (10 nM, ~10 ppb) in drinking water set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For practical use, the probe was used to quantify Hg(II) in (spiked) tap water where it gave recoveries between 95 and 106% and relative standard deviations between 1.9 and 3.2%. The probe can also be applied in filter paper-based assays, and this paves the way to point-of-care pollution control. Abstract:We reported a simple, direct, green and solvent-free method for preparation of sulfur- and nitrogen-co-doped fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (SNCNs) by one-pot solid-phase thermal treatment of glutathione. The fluorescence can be quenched significantly by trace Hg2+ via the high-affinity of Hg2+ with thiol group of SNCNs. The as-prepared SNCNs are used as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for lable-free detection of Hg2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Mercury is a common heavy metal element in natural systems and is highly toxic to the human body. Herein, a novel colorimetric detection of Hg2+ ions is proposed based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) induced by carbon quantum dots (CDs) with the assistance of glutathione (GSH). In this sensing system, the AuNP/CDs composite forms through Au-N bonds. Simultaneously, the color of the solution turns from wine red to blue. The well-dispersed AuNPs can be restored after the addition of GSH, because GSH competes with CDs to bind onto the surface of AuNPs and protect AuNPs from aggregation. In the presence of Hg2+ ions, GSH can chelate with Hg2+ to form a complex, which subsequently enables CDs to facilitate the aggregation of the AuNPs again. Therefore, according to the red-to-blue color change, a colorimetric sensor is established for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 7.5 nM. Moreover, this sensor is successfully used to detect Hg2+ spiked in environmental water. This very simple and cost-effective strategy will promote the development of a colorimetric sensor for the determination of other metal ions in biological and environmental fields.
Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-doped Carbon Dots for Ratiometric Fluorometric Determination of Mercury Ions

Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) were prepared for dual-channel ratiometric fluorescence determination of mercury ions (Hg2+). The dual-emission N, S-CDs were synthesized using a simple one-pot hydrothermal treatment. When excited with visible light, N,S-CDs exhibited two emission peaks at 390 and 500 nm. Notably, the presence of Hg2+ caused a considerable decrease in the fluorescence of N, S-CDs at 500 nm, mainly due to the static quenching effect. In comparison, the fluorescence at 390 nm was almost unchanged. With a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.21 µM for Hg2+, the N, S-CDs were successfully applied to the unlabeled ratiometric fluorescence determination of Hg2+ in actual water samples with good recoveries (94.5-107.8%). In conclusion, this developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor provides a reliable, environmentally friendly, rapid, and efficient platform for detecting Hg2+ in environmental applications.

Abstract:The development of probes for selective detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) is an important mission to accomplish because of the toxicity and ubiquity of Hg2+. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe O-(N-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide)-4-yl-O-phenyl carbonothioate (CBONT) for selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ by turn-on fluorescence spectroscopy. Probe CBONT exhibited a fast response for Hg2+ with excellent sensitivity (limit of detection = 1.9 nM, 3 sigma/slope), and it might be attributed to the adoption of a new recognition receptor of carbonothioate moiety. Additionally, probe CBONT could serve as a "naked-eye" indicator for Hg2+. Finally, probe CBONT could be successfully applied to detect the concentrations of Hg2+ in real water samples. Our proposed recognition receptor would open up new, exciting opportunities for designing highly selective and ultrasensitive fluorescent probes for the determination of Hg2+ in real water samples.

Abstract:We report on a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based ratiometric sensor for the detection of Hg(II) ion. First, silica nanoparticles were labeled with a hydrophobic fluorescent nitrobenzoxadiazolyl dye which acts as a FRET donor. A spirolactam rhodamine was then covalently linked to the surface of the silica particles. Exposure of the nanoparticles to Hg(II) in water induced a ring-opening reaction of the spirolactam rhodamine moieties, leading to the formation of a fluorescent derivative that can serve as the FRET acceptor. Ratiometric sensing of Hg(II) was accomplished by ratioing the fluorescence intensities at 520 nm and 578 nm. The average decay time for the donor decreases from 9.09 ns to 7.37 ns upon addition of Hg(II), which proves the occurrence of a FRET process. The detection limit of the assay is 100 nM (ca. 20 ppb). The sensor also exhibits a large Stokes shift (>150 nm) which can eliminate backscattering effects of excitation light. This architecture ensures the control over the location of donor and acceptor, affording the system preferable for ratiometric sensing.

Abstract:Mercury contamination in water is a persistent issue due to both natural geological and anthropogenic activities. Portable, facile and affordable sensors for detection and sensing different species of mercuries are highly desirable. We report a highly effective fluorescent, solid state sensor with high sensitivity, good selectivity and excellent reversibility for Hg(II) ion. Hg(II)-responsive carbon dots immobilised polystyrene spheres were fabricated as a middle layer in double heterostructure colloidal photonic crystal film. Significant fluorescence enhancement was achieved due to doubly resonant of the modes of photonic crystals and multi beam interface inside the double heterostructure film. The amplified fluorescence enhances the sensitivity of detection, achieving a detection limit of 91 pM for Hg(II) ion, even 17 times lower than that of carbon dots solution probe. The polystyrene-based film sensor is negligibly responsive to other metal ions and can easily be recovered by rinsing with cysteine. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with high quantum yield (QY) of 40.5% were prepared through a facile and straightforward hydrothermal route. The as-prepared N-CDs exhibited excellent photoluminescence properties, good water-solublity and photostability, negligible cytotoxicity and favourable biocompatibility. Such N-CDs were found to serve as an effective fluorescent sensor for selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ in a wide linear response concentration range of 0 – 8 µM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.087 µM and could be applied to the determination of Hg2+ in environmental water samples. The corresponding mechanisms were discussed in detail. Moreover, another attractive finding was that the N-CDs showed satisfactory performance in bioimaging before and after the addition of Hg2+ in human lung cancer PC14 cells. With excellent sensitivity, selectivity and biocompatibility, such cheap carbonmaterials are potentially suitable for monitoring of Hg2+ in environmental applications and promising for biological applications.

Abstract:In this communication, we present a nano-graphite-DNA hybrid sensor for fluorescent detection of mercury(II) ions in aqueous solution for the first time. Furthermore, an amplification strategy based on nano-graphite for Hg2+ detection by using DNase I was demonstrated. The proposed amplified assay was simple and cost-effective with a limit of detection (LOD) for Hg2+ of 0.5 nM, which was about 20-fold lower than that of traditional unamplified homogeneous assays. We further demonstrated its practical application to detect Hg2+ in a real sample.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a convenient and green strategy for the synthesis of bright and water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) by carbonizing sodium citrate and glutathione together in a hydrothermal method for the first time. Without post surface modification, the as-synthesized CDs display fluorescence quantum yield (QY) as high as 21.03% and show superior stability not only in concentrated salt solutions but also in neutral and alkaline media. The probe exhibits selective and sensitive recognition capability towards mercury ion (Hg2+) in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of CDs can be quenched by Hg2+ through an effective electron energy transfer process. It displays a linear quenching effect toward mercury ion in the concentration range of 0-15μM with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. The limit of detection is determined to be 25nM at the signal to noise ratio of 3. These attractive merits would enable the extensive applications of this probe in environmental science and analytical chemistry in the future.
