Abstract:This study aims to aid in translating the theoretical framework into task statements that overseas learners and users of Chinese need to perform in order to fulfill their communication tasks. To this end,1135 CSL learners and users from Asia,Europe,Americas,and Oceania were chosen to rate 64 task statements in the importance,frequency and difficulty levels to successful communication. Responses were analyzed by respondent groups as well as specific subgroups. These findings support the use of this pool of tasks in the preparation of both teaching materials and assessment measures for CSL learners and users across a wide range of areas.

Abstract:Writing is a major skill that EFL students need to develop. And the realities of the school setting often cause a student to believe only writing for teachers to be writing that “counts” because teachers are often considered authority figures and the people who give grades (Earls, 1987). Thus, students may be more willing to revise their compositions according to teacher feedback. But for teachers to review each student’s paper throughout the drafting process is painfully time consuming. It is especially so with Chinese EFL teachers and learners (Qi, 2004; Wang, 2004). To ease the pain, some suggest that peer review is a good choice which can be applied to the foreign language classroom at any level (Byrd, 1994). Though numerous studies show that peer review is effective in improving student writing (Althauser & Darnall, 2001; Bean, 1996; Byrd, 1994; DiPardo & Freedman, 1988; Mendonca & Johnson, 1994), this issue has not been adequately researched in China. Situated in a Chinese university EFL writing class, the present study sought to examine students’ attitudes toward and reaction to peer review.

Abstract:In the late 1980s, the Ministry of Education advocated “designing certain language activities aimed at completing tasks” in professional English teaching. The revised outline in 2000 also stipulated that “more task centered and diverse teaching activities should be carried out”. In 2001, the Ministry of Education emphasized that middle school English instruction should advocate a “task-based teaching method”. As a task-centered approach to English teaching, Task-based Language Teaching has been studied and implemented by many Chinese and foreign researchers and teachers. While it is acknowledged that Task-based Language Teaching brings benefits to students and instruction, especially compared to traditional language teaching, its application to different types of real-world classroom lessons has exposed some problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical basis, relevant information about tasks, previous research, advantages, problems, procedures and suggestions for the implementation of Task-based Language teaching, and to express some of personal opinions to some extent.

Abstract:Critical thinking (CT) is important for English as a foreign language (EFL) writing. However, the EFL writings of Chinese students are usually negatively commented on in terms of CT in writing. The study reviewed relevant studies on how CT in writing was taught to Chinese EFL learners at the tertiary education level. It shows most EFL writing teachers adopted existing western CT definitions in a general knowledge background and mainly used teacher-centered assessment techniques to teach CT. Students’ CT development was mostly assessed by self-designed CT assessments. Facing the globalization of CT teaching, the study thus updates the assessment techniques to meet the increasing needs of CT teaching in EFL writing in China. Relevant suggestions are also given to education practitioners.
Applicability Analysis of Task-Based Language Teaching Approach in the Context of College English Education in China

Abstract:As a widely-used language teaching approach, Task- B ased Language Teaching (TBLT) has become increasingly popular in the field of second language acquisition, which can be applied in a wide range of different ages learners. The practice of TBLT in College English in China seems to be comparatively successful these years. The author starts his essay with a systematic literature review which addresses the theoretical bases of TBLT as well as the background information of College English E ducation in China. The essay then looks into the different practical situations in different learning contexts in Chinese colleges in terms of four English skills: listening, speaking, reading , writing, and tries to confirm which context is best suited to. Finally , the essay argues that it is difficult to define a specific section TBLT has obviously better effects than the other three in College English education, through comparing the strengths and limitations of application to each skill. In summary, TBLT can be favorably practiced in College English by narrowing down the drawbacks of the application to each skill.

Abstract:Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) refers to the use of tasks as the essential component of planning and instruction in language teaching. In TBLT, language learning becomes a process that provides many communicative opportunities for learners and primarily focuses on making meaning. Additionally, TBLT is a form of learner-centered teaching approach, in which learners learn the target language with self-motivated and task-based pair work or group work. Although TBLT have influenced English languages teaching throughout the world, with a number of Asian countries widely promoting TBLT in their English education policies, many difficulties have emerged with respect to implementing these methods in practice. In China, the ministry of national education proposed the new curriculum standard (2001), which clearly required application of task-based language teaching in to basic language teaching. However, many Chinese scholar argue that it is inadvisable to directly import and use Task-based language teaching in China, as this should be localized and teaching methods should be chosen flexibly. It is therefore important to apply these modern teaching methods with an exact and careful consideration of the cultural values and realistic environments.

Abstract:Written expression plays an important role in students' English learning and has always been a weak part in English teaching. In daily learning, the differences between mother tongue and second language inevitably have an impact on students' writing. This paper aims to use contrastive analysis to explore the differences in lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels between English and Chinese writing, and proposes relevant teaching suggestions based on these, so as to improve students' English writing level and teachers' writing teaching level.

Abstract:As is known to all, with the further development of economic globalization, foreign language teaching plays an increasingly important role in China's education.In recent years, as a result of China's new curriculum reform, researchers continue to explore the comprehensive learning methods, many new teaching methods with the times came into being.This paper mainly wants to discuss whether Task-based Approach really has practically helped for English writing, whether it can mobilize students' enthusiasm for writing, whether it pays attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive quality, and how to carry out Task-based Approach better and more smoothly in middle schools.In order to better ensure the authenticity of this paper, the author of the paper will use questionnaire survey and experimental methods to demonstrate.Through the research, the author of the paper understands that Task-Based Approach is developed on the basis of communicative teaching method, and its practical application in English classroom provides a good example for us.However, in the past, China's English teaching did not pay attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive ability, but only paid attention to a certain aspect of English learning, and paid less attention to writing. Students are afraid to write English compositions, lack of practical writing materials, unable to mobilize the knowledge learned, write out vividly.After the study of Task-based Approach, students can improve their writing ability and stimulate their interest in writing to some extent.After this study, the author of the paper hopes to give some ideas and inspiration to teachers who want to use Task-based Approach in writing teaching in the future. At the same time, in view of the shortcomings in the research, it is hoped that teachers can continue to reflect and summarize, and continue to conduct in-depth research.

Abstract:This survey aims to find the problems of task design in graduate English textbooks.630 directions of tasks are collected from two textbooks.The analysis shows that the main problems are as follows: first, design concept are based on language knowledge to ignore language application ability; second, design objective stresses language forms more than language meanings; third, design contents stress language knowledge more than humanistic quality; forth, design goal stress individual-skill tasks more than integrated ones, fifth, present forms of tasks are simple, mainly words without the use of pictures, audio and video materials.

Abstract:: English reading is not only an important part in English teaching, but also an important English ability. There are various teaching methods about English reading teaching, but many of them haven’t embodied good effects which makes many students’ English reading in trouble. Nowadays, many scholars in English teaching advocate task-based teaching method. This method emphasizes English reading teaching and task in order to make students have purpose to read relevant articles. This paper intends to explore how to improve the quality of English reading teaching through Task-based teaching method. As an important part of English teaching, the main purpose of English reading teaching is to cultivate students' reading comprehension ability and cultivate students' understanding of English reading. But the current situation is that English reading teaching in middle school emphasizes more grammar points and word memory and neglects the cultivation of students' reading ability, which will formal a negative impact on students' English learning. As I just mentioned nowadays, more and more scholars advocate task-based teaching method, which can not only improve students' reading ability, but also help them master relevant reading strategies more effectively. At the same time, it can also motive students' learning interests in English reading.

A Systematic Review of the Research on Chinese Character Teaching and Learning

Abstract:Using a thematic analysis methodology, this paper attempts a critical review of published articles on Chinese character teaching and learning in and outside China between 2005 and 2019, highlighting contributions scholars made to the current literature as well as identifying gaps in the research. The analysis reveals that there is a rather large gap in the use of research methodologies between the two sets of articles, with publications in China predominantly adopting non-empirical approaches while most articles published outside China are empirical. Besides, the use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in character teaching and learning seems to be a key research topic outside China, while exploring new pedagogical ideas and strategies attracts more interest among scholars in China. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research directions and a call for more diverse research paradigms and mixed-method perspectives.

Abstract:The use of English textbook does not only become a guide to the teachers when delivering the materials, but also presents necessary input through various explanations and activities. On the side of the learners, it also influences their attitudes and performance to the materials. This phenomenon challenges the writer to conduct research-based article concerning textbook evaluation to analyze the tasks and the distribution (simple to complex) of tasks presented in English textbook used in senior high school. The findings show that the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1 has interesting tasks which meet the objectives in curriculum 2013 and a good distribution of tasks across chapters and the whole book.

Abstract:In second language teaching, materials play a unique role and the demand of developing language-teaching materials has been increasing. The textbook, an integral part of language-teaching materials, to some extent dominates the contents of teaching and learning and has a deep influence on curriculum. Textbooks for extensive reading apparently highlights this feature while some kind of series adopted in universities have several shortcomings in the representativeness of the articles and their variety of the categories, etc. which makes it hard to play an active role and have a positive impact in teaching and learning process. Some teachers ignore the development of this ability and the significant contribution they can make to evaluating and selecting textbooks. Thus, the author collects basic information from one series of textbooks and analyzes it systematically, and then shows overall comments with detailed suggestions on contents as: selecting more articles from representative writers; increasing articles about history and philosophy; selecting more current articles from magazines; adding more poems and attaching more detailed introductions about the authors and reference books to read. These suggestions will provide some implication for extensive reading textbook evaluation and selection, thereby, the selected textbooks can be at the good service for extensive reading teaching and teachers can get a self-development in the process.

Abstract:This study examines university teachers’ beliefs and practices related to task-based language teaching while teaching English as a foreign language. Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has become a prominent topic for researchers and practitioners in recent decades. It is also advocated by the Chinese Ministry of Education for college English teaching. However, few studies have investigated local EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers’ perceptions of and difficulties in implementing TBLT. This study aims to fill this gap. Data were collected via 12 semi-structured interviews, and the results revealed that the Chinese EFL teachers employed a weak version of the approach, i.e. the task-supported language teaching approach. They tended towards a student-centred teacher–student relationship. These findings suggest that the role of traditional Chinese values in influencing the implementation of TBLT has been overemphasized. Implications for the sustainable development of teaching pedagogy and professional learning are discussed.

Towards Understanding Teacher Mentoring, Learner WCF Beliefs, and Learner Revision Practices Through Peer Review Feedback: A Sociocultural Perspective

Abstract:Background. The existing literature has focused on learner perceptions or beliefs about peer review tasks over the recent decade. However, little has been known about the relationships among learner beliefs about written corrective feedback (WCF), related teacher mentoring process, and learner revision practices. Purpose. We thus aimed at addressing the gap by exploring how teacher mentoring and learner WCF beliefs may inform learner revision practices in the peer-reviewed process. Methods. In this mixed-method study, we included four Chinese EFL students majoring in English as the participants and collected their WCF belief survey data. We also collected their actual practice data through PeerCeptiv, an online writing and rewriting platform. In addition, we traced the teacher mentoring practices and interviewed the participants about their beliefs and practices in the peer review and back-evaluation process. Results. Through the mixed-methods design, we reported our major findings: the student participants believed empathy and resonance was the primary advantage of peer feedback, and teacher mentoring facilitated them in understanding and performing the peer review and revision tasks; we also found the student review process consisted of evaluating, resonating, learning, and reflecting practices and the student revision process included crediting, arguing, correcting, and polishing practices. Implications. From a sociocultural perspective, we centered our discussion on these research findings by claiming that scaffolding in different forms work together enhance learner performance and student beliefs appear in a complex manner with student actual revision practices. We also offered insights for future studies and practical implications for language teachers.
