Abstract:CH3NH3PbI3-based solar cells have shown remarkable progress in recent years but have also suffered from structural, electrical, and chemical instabilities related to the soft lattices and the chemistry of these halides. One of the instabilities is ion migration, which may cause current-voltage hysteresis in CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells. Significant ion diffusion and ionic conductivity in CH3NH3PbI3 have been reported; their nature, however, remain controversial. In the literature, the use of different experimental techniques leads to the observation of different diffusing ions (either iodine or CH3NH3 ion); the calculated diffusion barriers for native defects scatter in a wide range; the calculated defect formation energies also differ qualitatively. These controversies hinder the understanding and the control of the ion migration in CH3NH3PbI3. In this paper, we show density functional theory calculations of both the diffusion barriers and the formation energies for native defects (V-I(+), MA(t)(+), V-MA(-), and I-t(-)) and the Au impurity in CH3NH3PbI3. V-I(+) is found to be the dominant diffusing defect due to its low formation energy and the low diffusion barrier. I-i(-) and MA(i)(+) also have low diffusion barriers but their formation energies are relatively high. The hopping rate of V-I(+) is further calculated taking into account the contribution of the vibrational entropy, confirming V-I(+) as a fast diffuser. We discuss approaches for managing defect population and migration and suggest that chemically modifying surfaces, interfaces, and grain boundaries may be effective in controlling the population of the iodine vacancy and the device polarization. We further show that the formation energy and the diffusion barrier of Au interstitial in CH3NH3PbI3 are both low. It is thus possible that Au can diffuse into CH3NH3PbI3 under bias in devices (e.g., solar cell, photodetector) with Au/CH3NH3PbI3 interfaces and modify the electronic properties of CH3NH3PbI3.

Abstract:Both intrinsic and extrinsic charge transport properties of methylammonium lead triiodide perovskites are investigated from first-principles. The weak electron-phonon couplings are revealed, with the largest deformation potential (~ 5 eV) comparable to that of single layer graphene. The intrinsic mobility limited by the acoustic phonon scattering is as high as a few thousands cm2 V−1 s−1 with the hole mobility larger than the electron mobility. At the impurity density of 1018 cm−3, the charged impurity scattering starts to dominate and lowers the electron mobility to 101 cm2 V−1 s−1 and the hole mobility to 72.2 cm2 V−1 s−1. The high intrinsic mobility warrants the long and balanced diffusion length of charge carriers. With the control of impurities or defects as well as charge traps in these perovskites, enhanced efficiencies of solar cells with simplified device structures are promised.

Abstract:Solar cells based on methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI(3)) have shown remarkable progress in recent years and have demonstrated efficiencies greater than 20%. However, the long-term stability of MAPbI(3)-based solar cells has yet to be achieved. Besides the well-known chemical and thermal instabilities, significant native ion migration in lead halide perovskites leads to current-voltage hysteresis and photoinduced phase segregation. Recently, it is further revealed that, despite having excellent chemical stability, the Au electrode can cause serious solar cell degradation due to Au diffusion into MAPbI(3). In addition to Au, many other metals have been used as electrodes in MAPbI(3) solar cells. However, how the external metal impurities introduced by electrodes affect the long-term stability of MAPbI(3) solar cells has rarely been studied. A comprehensive study of formation energetics and diffusion dynamics of a number of noble and transition metal impurities (Au, Ag, Cu, Cr, Mo, W, Co, Ni, Pd) in MAPbI(3) based on first-principles calculations is reported herein. The results uncover important general trends of impurity formation and diffusion in MAPbI(3) and provide useful guidance for identifying the optimal metal electrodes that do not introduce electrically active impurity defects in MAPbI(3) while having low resistivities and suitable work functions for carrier extraction.
Strong Covalency-Induced Recombination Centers in Perovskite Solar Cell Material CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3

Abstract:Inorganic-organic hybrid perovskites are a new family of solar cell materials, which have recently been used to make solar cells with efficiency approaching 20%. Here, we report the unique defect chemistry of the prototype material, CH3NH3PbI3, based on first-principles calculation. We found that both the Pb cations and I anions in this material exhibit strong covalency as characterized by the formation of Pb dimers and I trimers with strong covalent bonds at some of the intrinsic defects. The Pb dimers and I trimers are only stabilized in a particular charge state with significantly lowered energy, which leads to deep charge-state transition levels within the band gap, in contradiction to a recent proposal that this system has only shallow intrinsic defects. Our results show that, in order to prevent the deep-level defects from being effective recombination centers, the equilibrium carrier concentrations should be controlled so that the Fermi energy is about 0.3 eV away from the band edges. Beyond this range, according to a Shockley-Read-Hall analysis, the non-equilibrium carrier lifetime will be strongly affected by the concentration of I vacancies and the anti-site defects with I occupying a CH3NH3 site.

Intrinsic Instability of the Hybrid Halide Perovskite Semiconductor CH3NH3PbI3

Abstract:The organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 has attracted significant interest for its high performance in converting solar light into electrical power with an efficiency exceeding 20%. Unfortunately, chemical stability is one major challenge in the development of the CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells. It was commonly assumed that moisture or oxygen in the environment causes the poor stability of hybrid halide perovskites, however, here we show from the first-principles calculations that the room-temperature tetragonal phase of CH3NH3PbI3 is thermodynamically unstable with respect to the phase separation into CH3NH3I + PbI2, i.e., the disproportionation is exothermic, independent of the humidity or oxygen in the atmosphere. When the structure is distorted to the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, the energetic cost of separation increases, but remains small. Contributions from vibrational and configurational entropy at room temperature have been considered, but the instability of CH3NH3PbI3 is unchanged. When I is replaced by Br or Cl, Pb by Sn, or the organic cation CH3NH3 by inorganic Cs, the perovskites become more stable and do not phase-separate spontaneously. Our study highlights that the poor chemical stability is intrinsic to CH3NH3PbI3 and suggests that element-substitution may solve the chemical stability problem in hybrid halide perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead-iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, hereafter referred to as MAPbI(3)) perovskite has emerged as a dazzling nova in the solar cell realm. To date, the surface physics of these materials is still puzzling, but in this work, we demonstrate that the optical dynamics in MAPbI(3) is primarily determined by the surface states. Pb dangling bonds on the surface of MAPbI(3) introduce shallow electronic states. The carrier localization effect for these electronic states is rather weak as the lifetimes of the carriers on the iodine-poor surface are comparative to those in the interior region of MAPbI(3). In contrast, rich-iodine on the surface of MAPbI(3) induces deep trap centers for the carriers, which are detrimental to long carrier diffusion lengths. It is further proved that the surface passivation, which surprisingly prolongs the carrier diffusion lengths, mainly works on the rich-iodine on the surface rather than the Pb dangling bonds. This better understanding of the surface physics could provide essential information for improving the performance of photoelectronic devices based on MAPbI(3) perovskites.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which photo-absorbing layer consists of organometal halide perovskites, have gotten much attention because of their rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies (3.8% in 2009, but nowadays over 22% cell has appeared). [1, 2] Especially, lead halide perovskites such as CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) and (NH2)2CHPbI3 (FAPbI3) show remarkable properties for solar cell applications, e.g. high optical absorption coefficients and long diffusion lengths of both charge carriers. However, the current−voltage (J−V) curve of PSCs often depends on voltage sweep rates and sweep directions, [3, 4] which make the evaluation of conversion efficiency difficult. Recently, the rate-dependent J−V hysteresis, which is due to a slow process continued about seconds, was attributed to ionic diffusions in MAPbI3. [5] In this study, we calculated activation barriers of ion diffusions in tetragonal MAPbI3 and trigonal FAPbI3 by first-principles calculations. The vacancy migrations of I− anions in both perovskites show low barriers of 0.3 to 0.45 eV, which values indicate that MAPbI3 and FAPbI3 are ion conductors. Furthermore, MA+ and FA+ cations have rather low barriers c.a. 0.6 eV. The results strongly suggest that the not only anions but also molecular cations can migrate in the perovskites when a bias voltage is applied. Based on the dilute diffusion theory, we can expect that small vacancy concentrations suppress these ion conductions. Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising candidates for the next-generation solar cells. Many efforts have been made to study their structures in the search for a better mechanistic understanding to guide the materials optimization. Here, we investigate the structure instability of the single-crystalline CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) film by using transmission electron microscopy. We find that MAPbI3 is very sensitive to the electron beam illumination and rapidly decomposes into the hexagonal PbI2. We propose a decomposition pathway, initiated with the loss of iodine ions, resulting in eventual collapse of perovskite structure and its decomposition into PbI2. These findings impose important question on the interpretation of experimental data based on electron diffraction and highlight the need to circumvent material decomposition in future electron microscopy studies. The structural evolution during decomposition process also sheds light on the structure instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites in solar cell applications.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have rapidly grown as favorable materials for photovoltaic applications, but accomplishing long-term stability is still a major research problem. This work demonstrates a new insight on instability and degradation factors in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells aging with time in open air. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to investigate the compositional changes caused by device degradation over the period of 1000 hrs. XPS spectra confirm the migration of metallic ions from the bottom electrode (ITO) as a key factor causing the chemical composition change in the perovskite layer besides the diffusion of oxygen. XPS results are in good agreement with the crystallographic marks. Glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD-OES) has also been performed on the samples to correlate the XPS results. Based on the experimental results, fundamental features that account for the instability in the perovskite solar cell is discussed.

First-Principles Insight into the Degradation Mechanism of CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite: Light-Induced Defect Formation and Water Dissociation

Abstract:The organic/inorganic hybrid CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite shows promising features in light harvesters, but its instability under humid environment seriously restricts its application. To improve the long-term stability, it is imperative to understand the degradation mechanism at the atomic level. Here, we apply the density functional theory (DFT)+U method to systematically investigate the effect of light and the chemical interaction between the orthorhombic CH3NH3PbI3 (ort-CH3NH3PbI3) and water and some key roles of water/light causing instability of ort-CH3NH3PbI3 are identified. First, we demonstrate that the identified U values (I: 8 eV, Pb: 9 eV) in the DFT+U approach together with spin-orbit coupling can well describe the electronic and basic chemical properties of ortCH(3)NH(3)PbI(3), which is a good balance between the accuracy and computational cost. Second, the photogenerated hole is revealed to thermodynamically promote the formation of surface and bulk iodine vacancies in ort-CH3NH3PbI3(100) system that may induce the hysteresis behavior in current-voltage (J-V) curves and aging of perovskite solar cells. More importantly, the formed defect of iodine vacancy would induce H2O to undergo irreversible dissociation. Third, on the perfect ortCH(3)NH(3)PbI(3)(100) surface in the dark, H2O is found to be difficult to dissociate and incline to molecularly adsorb; in contrast, with a photogenerated electron involved, the dissociation of H2O molecule becomes favorable with a decreased barrier of 0.57 eV. H2O dissociation results in the formation of hydroxyl anion (OH-), which can strongly interact with CH3NH3+ and lead to the formation of CH3NH2, thereby accelerating the ort-CH3NH3PbI3 degradation.
First-Principles Study of Electron Injection and Defects at the TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 Interface of Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract:We investigated electron injection rates and vacancy defect properties by performing first-principles calculations on the interface of an anatase-TiO2(001) and a tetragonal CH3NH3PbI3(110) (MAPbI3(110)). We found that the coupling matrix element between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of MAPbI3 and the TiO2 conduction band (CB) minimum is negligibly small, the indication being that electron-injection times for low-energy excited states are quite long (more than several tens of picoseconds). We also found that higher-lying CB states coupled more strongly; injection was expected to take place on a femtosecond time scale. Furthermore, we found that vacancy defects in the TiO2 layer produced undesired defect levels that caused hole traps and recombination centers. Whereas most of the vacancy defects in the MAPbI3 layer produced no additional states in the MAPbI3 gap, a Pb vacancy (VPb) at the interface created an energy level below the MAPbI3 CB edge and had a lower energy of formation than the VPb defect in bulk because of the interaction with the TiO2 surface.
Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Ultrahigh Thermal Expansion of Single-Crystal Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I)

Abstract:Improving device lifetime and stability remains the stumbling block of the commercialization of hybrid perovskite-based devices (HPDs). Although extensive efforts have been paid, thermal property, one of the most crucial parameters in conventional solid-state electronic devices, has rarely been studied for HPDs. Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent ultralow thermal conductivity and ultrahigh thermal expansion of single-crystalline MAPbX(3) (MA = CH3NH3), which are found distinct from traditional thin-film solar cells materials. Particularly, for MAPbI3, thermal conductivity is observed being only 0.3 Wm(-1).K-1 and linear thermal expansion coefficient along [100] direction is as high as 57.8 X 10(-6) K-1 (tetragonal) and much higher at the structural phase transition point. We attribute the ultralow thermal conductivity and ultrahigh thermal expansion to the weak chemical bonds associated with the soft perovskite materials. These unique properties can be very challenging for the multilayer device design, but their ultralow thermal conductivity may unveil a new thermoelectric material concept.
Iodide and charge migration at defective surfaces of methylammonium lead triiodide perovskites: The role of hydrogen bonding

Abstract:Methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) solar cells have exhibited impressive potential in photovoltaic applications, encouraging further work to improve operating stability. Ionic migration has been proposed to be a possible cause of the current–voltage hysteresis which is responsible for the instability of the CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells. Motivated by the variation of the surface geometries of the CH3NH3PbI3 material when going from the pristine to defective surfaces with the iodine vacancies, we adopt the density functional theory method to study the iodide migration along different paths at the defective surfaces followed by employing the time-dependent density functional theory method to calculate the light-induced electronic states along the paths. We find that the iodide movement is largely tuned by the reorientation and rotation of the organic cations with the disruption and formation of the hydrogen bonding during the iodide migration. Besides, the migration of the light-induced charge carriers varies along the paths with different orientations of the organic cations. We attribute the complicated dynamics of the mobile iodide ions and the associated trap states to the hydrogen bonding at the surfaces, providing crucial guidance for improving the stability and charge carrier lifetime in the CH3NH3PbI3 and other metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Due to light-induced effects in CH3NH3-based perovskites, such as ion migration, defects formation, and halide segregation, the degradation of CH3NH3-based perovskite solar cells under maximum power point is generally implicated. Here we demonstrated that the effect of light-enhanced ion migration in CH3NH3PbI3 can be eliminated by inorganic Cs substitution, leading to an ultrastable perovskite solar cell. Quantitatively, the ion migration barrier for CH3NH3PbI3 is 0.62 eV under dark conditions, larger than that of CsPbI2Br (0.45 eV); however, it reduces to 0.07 eV for CH3NH3PbI3 under illumination, smaller than that for CsPbI2Br (0.43 eV). Meanwhile, photoinduced halide segregation is also suppressed in Cs-based perovskites. Cs-based perovskite solar cells retained >99% of the initial efficiency (10.3%) after 1500 h of maximum power point tracking under AM1.5G illumination, while CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells degraded severely after 50 h of operation. Our work reveals an uncovered mechanism for stability improvement by inorganic cation substitution in perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.
Correlations of Ionic Migration and Deep-Level Traps Leads to Surface Defect Formation in Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Correlations between ion migration, charge carrier, and bulk deep-level defect in MAPbI(3) perovskites are systematically invesitgated through voltage-dependent thermal admittance spectroscopy and in situ scanning probe microscopy. We show that iodine interstitials construct stable, deep-level bulk defects in the polycrystalline MAPbI(3) with an activation energy (EA) level of 0.495 eV above the valence band maximum. Experimentally, EA varied with depletion region distribution and excess electron from charge transport layers, which can be modulated through external bias. Under forward bias, mobile bulk defects migrate and transform into surface defect states, introducing additional nonradiative recombination pathways. Overall, this study directly reveals electronic correlations between defect ions and charge carriers, pointing out the importance of iodine defect chemistry in surface recombination and degradation in long-term device stabilities.

Abstract:Organo-lead halide perovskite solar cells represent a revolutionary shift in solar photovoltaics, introducing relatively soft defect containing semiconductors as materials with excellent charge collection for both electrons and holes. Although they are based on the nominally simple cubic perovskite structure, these compounds are in fact very complex. For example, in (CH3NH3)PbI3 the dynamics and ensuing structural fluctuations associated with the (CH3NH3)+ ions and the interplay with the electronic properties are still not fully understood, despite extensive study. Here, using ab-initio calculations, we show that at room and higher temperature, the rotation of CH3NH3 molecules can be viewed as effectively giving local structures that are cubic and tetragonal like from the point of view of the PbI3 framework, though in fact having lower symmetry. Both of these structures are locally polar, with sizable polarization, ~10 μC/cm2 due to the dipoles on the organic. They become energetically degenerate in the volume range, V ~ 250 Å3/f.u–265 Å3/f.u. We also find very significant dependence of the band gap on the local structure. This type of transition is analogous to a transition between two ferroelectric structures, where in-spite of strong electron phonon coupling, there is strong screening of charged defects which can lead to enhanced mobility and charge collection. The results provide insights into the enhanced light absorption near the band edge and good charge collection in this material.

Abstract:What causes the instability of perovskite solar cells has been a puzzling problem impeding the development of commercial panels. So far there is limited evidence on the link between device instability and the various materials in each of the stacked layers. Here, we study the chemistry and distribution of various species and the integrity of the functional layers in high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells, with and without an electric field. The distribution of the diffusion species and its impact on the chemical and electronic structures through the transporting layers are measured by photoemission spectroscopy combined with damage-free ion beam sputtering. We find that various species, such as I 2 and PbI 2 , are distributed throughout the organic transporting layers toward the electrode interface. These species are found to be charge neutral, have no impact on the Fermi level, and react little with copper. An electric field, however, can catalyze the electro-decomposition of the perovskite, causing chemical heterogeneity and degradation in device performance.
