Abstract:Magnetoelectric materials which simultaneously exhibit electric polarization and magnetism have attracted more and more attention due to their novel physical properties and promising applications for next-generation devices. Exploring new materials with outstanding magnetoelectric performance, especially the manipulation of magnetization by electric field, is of great importance. Here, we demonstrate the cross-coupling between magnetic and electric orders in polycrystalline Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 , in which not only magnetic-field-induced electric polarization but also electric field control of magnetism is observed. These results reveal rich physical phenomenon and potential applications in this compound.

Abstract:We report magnetic and electric properties of Co4Ta2O9, which is a collinear antiferromagnet with trigonal structure. At zero magnetic fields, no dielectric anomaly and electric polarization are observed in this compound. While, finite dielectric peaks and electric polarization develop under applied magnetic field, and increase with increasing field, showing magnetodielectric and magnetoelectric performance. We ascribe the magnetic‐field‐induced dielectric anomaly and electric polarization in Co4Ta2O9 to spin fluctuation and domain effect.

Abstract:Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that Co4Nb2O9 forms a noncollinear in-plane magnetic structure with Co2+ moments lying in the ab plane. The spin-wave excitations of this magnet were measured by using inelastic neutron scattering and soundly simulated by a dynamic model involving nearest and next-nearest neighbour exchange interactions, in-plane anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The in-plane magnetic structure of Co4Nb2O9 is attributed to the large in-plane anisotropy while the noncollinearity of the spin configuration is attributed to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The high magnetoelectric coupling effect of Co4Nb2O9 in fields can be explained by its special in-plane magnetic structure.

Abstract:We investigated magnetic and electric properties of two triangular lattice antiferromagnets (TLAFs), Ba(3)ATa(2)O(9) (A = Ni and Co). Ba3NiTa2O9 shows (i) a single antiferromagnetic phase transition to 120 degree ordered state at T-N similar to 3.3 K, (ii) a weak spin-flop-like transition in isothermal magnetization curves around 4 T, and the saturation magnetization about 1.6 mu(B) per Ni2+ above 9.2 T, and (iii) a weak magnetoelectric effect could be removed without ferroelectricity. Comparing to the isostructural TLAF, Ba3NiNb2O9 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 257205 (2012)], which exhibits successive magnetic phase transitions and ferroelectricity, Ba3NiTa2O9 shows lower T-N, smaller saturation magnetization, no successive phase transition, and no ferroelectricity. These differences indicate that the higher order superexchange interaction involving Ta atomic orbitals in Ba3NiTa2O9 disrupts not only the exotic magnetic phases, also ferroelectricity. We show that this scenario can be also applied to explain the differences between Ba3CoTa2O9 and Ba3CoNb2O9 [Phys. Rev. B 89, 104420 (2014)]. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the buckled honeycomb lattice of magnetoelectric Co4Ta2O9 determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction

Abstract:Co4Ta2O9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and non-linearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co4Ta2O9 single crystals. Below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic moments lie in the ab plane. They form a canted antiferromagnetic structure with a tilt angle of ~ 14 degrees at 15 K in the buckled layers, while the magnetic moments in each flat layer are collinear. This is directly evidenced by a finite (0, 0, 3) magnetic Bragg peak intensity, which would be absent in the collinear magnetic order. The magnetic space group is C2'/c. It is different from the previously reported C2/c' group, also found in the isostructural Co4Nb2O9. The revised magnetic structure successfully explains the major features of the magnetoelectric tensor of Co4Ta2O9 within the framework of the spin-flop model.

Abstract:The magnetic and structural properties of polycrystalline Co$_{4-x}$ Ni$_x$ Nb$_2$ O$_9$ (x=1,2) have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction, magnetization and heat capacity measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For x=1, the compound crystallizes in the trigonal P$\bar{3}$c1 space group. Below T$_N$ = 31 K it develops a weakly non-collinear antiferromagnetig structure with magnetic moments in the ab-plane. The compound with x=2 has crystal structure of the orthorhombic Pbcn space group and shows a hard ferrimagnetic behavior below T$_C$ =47 K. For this compound a weakly non-collinear ferrimagnetic structure with two possible configurations in ab plane was derived from ND study. By calculating magnetic anisotropy energy via DFT, the ground-state magnetic configuration was determined for this compound. The heat capacity study in magnetic fields up to 140 kOe provide further information on the magnetic structure of the compounds.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Mn4Ta2O9 is prepared to investigate its magnetoelectric effect, due to its specific crystal and magnetic structure. The dielectric properties and electric polarization of this compound have been carefully examined in various magnetic fields. No dielectric anomalies and spontaneous polarization is observed under zero magnetic field. While, the dielectric peak appears around the onset temperature of magnetic transition, below which finite polarization is detected. With the external magnetic field increasing, the magnitude of dielectric peak and electric polarization gradually increase, which has been discussed in the letter.

Abstract:The van der Waals (vdW) layered multiferroics, which host simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic orders, have attracted attention not only for their potentials to be utilized in nanoelectric devices and spintronics, but also offer alternative opportunities for emergent physical phenomena. To date, the vdW layered multiferroic materials are still very rare. In this work, we have investigated the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric effects in Co5(TeO3)4Cl2, a promising new multiferroic compound with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel point TN = 18 K. The neutron powder diffraction reveals the non-coplanar AFM state with preferred Neel vector along the c-axis, while a spin re-orientation occurring between 8 K and 15 K is identified, which results from the distinct temperature dependence of the non-equivalent Co sites moment in Co5(TeO3)4Cl2. What is more, it is found that Co5(TeO3)4Cl2 is one of the best vdW multiferroics studied so far in terms of the multiferroic performance. The measured linear ME coefficient exhibits the emergent oscillation dependence of the angle between magnetic field and electric field, and the maximal value is as big as 45 ps/m. It is suggested that Co5(TeO3)4Cl2 is an appreciated platform for exploring the emergent multiferroicity in vdW layered compounds.

Abstract:Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that Co4Nb2O9 forms a noncollinear magnetic structure with Co2+ moments lying in the ab plane. Such a canted spin configuration in Co4Nb2O9 is found to be the origin of the large magnetoelectric coupling effect. Both gapped mode and Goldstone mode were observed in the spin-wave dispersion curves via inelastic neutron scattering, indicating strong easy-plane single-ion anisotropy in Co4Nb2O9. A dynamical model involving nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions along the c axis and in the ab plane, and single-ion anisotropy was proposed to explain the observed spin dynamics. The simulation based on this model matches the experimental data well. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction was confirmed to be the origin of the in-plane spin canting of the magnetic structure.

Abstract:The magnetization, magnetostriction, and electric polarization of CaBaCo4O7 single-crystal samples were investigated under static and pulsed magnetic fields. Experimental results show that the ferrimagnetic order and metamagnetic transition occur in a lower-temperature region. At 4.2 K, with the increase of the applied magnetic field, there is a transition from multidomain to single domain at about 2 T, and then with the further increase of the magnetic field, the spin of cobalt ions (Co1 and Co4 ions) changes from noncollinear to collinear. Along with this magnetization process, magnetostriction also exhibits two continuous processes: magnetostriction related to magnetic domain rotation and magnetostriction related to the increase of spin collinearity. Especially in pulsed magnetic fields, the magnetization, magnetostriction, and polarization transitions induced by magnetic order occur almost in the same critical magnetic field. We assume that in the system, the magnetic order can further polarize the orbital via spin-orbit interaction, resulting in strong magnetostriction.

Abstract:The geometrically frustrated two-dimensional triangular lattice magnets A(4)B'B2O12 (A=Ba, Sr, La; B'=Co, Ni, Mn; B=W, Re) have been studied by x-ray diffraction, ac and dc susceptibilities, powder neutron diffraction, and specific-heat measurements. The results reveal the following: (i) The samples containing Co2+ (effective spin-1/2) and Ni2+ (spin-1) ions with small spin numbers exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) behavior and ordering, respectively, while the sample containing Mn2+ (spin-5/2) ions with a large spin number exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. We ascribe these spin-number-manipulated ground states to the competition between the AFM B'-O-O-B' and FM B'-O-B-O-B' superexchange interactions. (ii) The chemical pressure introduced into the Co-containing samples through the replacement of different-size ions on the A site finely tunes the FM behavior temperature of the system. This effect is not simply governed by the lattice parameters and requires more precise structural measurements to elucidate.

Abstract:In this work, we present detailed 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy investigations of (Co0.97 57Fe0.03)4Nb2O9 compound to study its possible magnetic structure. We have shown that the previously reported magnetic structures cannot satisfactorily describe our low temperature Mössbauer spectra. Therefore, in combination with theoretical calculations, we have proposed a modulated helicoidal magnetic structure that can be used to simulate the whole series of our low temperature Mössbauer spectra. Our results suggest that the combination of previously reported different magnetic structures are only approximations of the average magnetic structure from our modulated helicoidal model. We anticipate that the proposed modulated non-collinear magnetic structure might shed light on the understanding of the complex magnetoelectric effects observed in this system.

Abstract:A tunable and nonvolatile magnetoelectric coupling effect and magnetization reversal in demagnetized Ta/CoFeB/(011)PMN-PT was obtained by applying electric fields without an external magnetic field. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism investigation under an in situ electric field indicates that the orbital magnetic moment to spin magnetic moment ratios of both Fe and Co are enhanced under the electric field. The ratio of Fe under negative electric field control is much larger than that under a positive electric field, while it remains almost unchanged for Co under different electric fields.

Abstract:We report the structural, magnetoelectric (ME), magnetic and electric control of magnetic properties in Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 (CNO) single crystal. A detailed ME measurement reveals a nonlinear ME effect instead of a linear ME effect in CNO single crystal. By fitting the magnetization-electric field (M-E) curve, it can be found that the linear ( α_e ) and quadratic (γ) coefficients equal to 8.27 ps/m and −6.46 ps/MV for upper branch, as well as 8.38 ps/m and 6.75 ps/MV for the lower branch. More importantly, a pronounced response was observed under a small cooling magnetic field, which cannot even cause the spin flop. This suggests a magnetoelectric effect can occur at paraelectric state for CNO single crystal. Furthermore, we also found that the magnetization of every axis responds to electric field applied along a -axis, but fails to do so when the electric field is applied c -axis. Such findings supply a direct evidence to the magnetic structure and ME coupling mechanism indirectly reflected by our neutron experiment.

Abstract:Bi4NdTi3Fe0.7Co0.3O15 polycrystalline samples were synthesized following a multicalcination procedure. X-ray analysis indicated a four-layer Aurivillius phase with an orthorhombic symmetry was obtained. The multiferroic properties of the sample at room temperature were demonstrated by the ferroelectric (2P(r) = 7.23 mu C/cm(2), 2E(c) = 35.72 kV/cm at applied electric field 70 kV/cm) and magnetic (2M(r) = 232 m emu/g, 2H(c) = 769 Oe at applied magnetic field 1.07 T) hysteresis loops. Obvious magnetodielectric effect which is dependent on frequency was observed at room temperature. It is found that the magnetodielectric effect exhibits a linear relation with M-4 rather than M-2 which may be due to the complicated spin-pair correlation interactions among next nearest neighbors. The present study suggests the possibility of magnetic ions doped Bi4NdTi3FeO15 as a potential candidate for novel multifunctional device application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Tuning the Magnetic Anisotropy Via Mn Substitution in Single Crystal CO4Nb2O9

Abstract:By using the optical floating-zone technique to grow a series of high-quality Co4-xMnxNb2O9 single crystals, the effect of Mn doping on the magnetic anisotropy and spin-flop is investigated. The antiferromagnetic phase transition and spin-flop transition for these samples (x <= 3.9) are similar to those in the parent phase of Co4Nb2O9, revealing that Co2+ ions in Co4-xMnxNb2O9 possess a strong single-ion anisotropy. The critical doping content, above which the magnetic anisotropy changes from easy-plane to easy-axis, has been identified as x = 3.95 with an additional kink observed in the magnetization curve below the N eel temperature. A spin-flop transition is reported for the first time in Mn4Nb2O9 at a field of 10.9 T at 2K.

Abstract:Neutron powder diffraction experiments were carried out on the magnetoelectric compound series (Co4-xMnx)Nb2O9 (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 3.9, 3.95 and 4) from base temperature to above their Neel temperatures. Their magnetic structures were analysed by using the irreducible representation analysis and Rietveld refinement method. Similar to Co4Nb2O9, the compounds with x <= 3.9 have noncollinear in-plane magnetic structures (Gamma 6) with magnetic moments lying purely in the ab plane with certain canting angles. Mn4Nb2O9 has a collinear antiferromagnetic structure (Gamma 2) with magnetic moments aligning along the c axis. The compound of x = 3.95 shows two magnetic phases in the magnetization, which was confirmed to have the Gamma 2 magnetic structure above 60 K and develop a second Gamma 6 local phase in addition to the main Gamma 2 phase due to doping. This study indicates 2.5 at% Co2+ doping is sufficient to alter the collinear easy-axis magnetic structure of Mn4Nb2O9 into the noncollinear easy-plane magnetic structure, which is attributed to the large easy-plane anisotropy of Co2+ and relative small Ising-like anisotropy of Mn2+. The doping effects on the Neel temperature and occupancy are also discussed.
Noncollinear Magnetic Structure and Anisotropic Magnetoelastic Coupling in Cobalt Pyrovanadate Co2V2O7

Abstract:Co2V2O7 was recently reported to exhibit remarkable magnetic-field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity [R. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 184404 (2018)], but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous. Magnetometry measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which includes two nonequivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neel temperature T-N = 6.0(2) K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2 K in NPD, which indicates the formation of long-range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analysis and magnetic structure refinement, we demonstrate that Co2V2O7 possesses a complicated noncollinear magnetic ground state with Co moments mainly located in the b-c plane and forming a noncollinear spin-chain-like structure along the c-axis. The ab initio calculations demonstrate that the noncollinear magnetic structure is more stable than various ferromagnetic states at low temperature. The noncollinear magnetic structure with a canted up arrow up arrow down arrow down arrow spin configuration is considered to be the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in Co2V2O7 because the inequivalent exchange striction induced by the spin-exchange interaction between the neighboring spins could be the driving force of ferroelectricity. It is also found that the deviation of lattice parameters a and b is opposite below T-N, while the lattice parameter c and beta stay almost constant below T-N, evidencing the anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in Co2V2O7.
Collinear magnetic structure and multiferroicity in the polar magnet Co2Mo3O8

Abstract:Among numerous multiferroic phenomena observed in spin frustrated lattice, giant magnetoelectricity in honeycomb lattice ${(\mathrm{Fe},\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Mn})}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ has stimulated great interest and substantial effort in searching for novel members in this 238 family. In this work, we synthesize successfully compound ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, a structural analogue of ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, and present a series of characterizations on its structural, magnetic, and electric properties. An antiferromagnetic transition takes place at the Neel temperature ${T}_{N}=39\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ with appearance of electric polarization and dielectric anomaly, which provides clear evidence of simultaneous magnetic and ferroelectric transitions. The neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and magnetic susceptibility data confirm the $c$-axis collinear antiferromagnetic orders and emergent ferroelectric polarization. In particular, such antiferromagnetic order is relatively robust against magnetic field up to 9 T, different from ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ with ferrimagnetic transition or ${\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ with spin flop in the low-field region. Our data on single crystals demonstrate the second-order magnetoelectric effect in terms of magnetic field dependence of ferroelectric polarization response, while no linear magnetoelectric response is allowed. It is suggested that ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mo}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ provides a unique platform on which rich multiferroic physics in the presence of collinear magnetic order can be explored.
