Abstract:Bi-functional catalysts consisting of platinum on aluminosilicate MCM-41 materials with Si/Al ratios between 10 and 30 were prepared via direct mixed-gel synthesis. The catalysts were tested in the hydrocracking of bio-alkanes, produced from biodiesel hydrodeoxygenation and composed of n-hexadecane and n-octadecane, for the production of bio-jet fuel. The effects of temperature, pressure, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), and H2/n-paraffin weight ratio on bio-alkanes conversion and product distribution were examined. The conversion was found to be dependent on the acid strength of the catalyst supports which were proportional to the Al content. However, the catalyst selectivity decreased with the increasing Al content. The optimal Si/Al ratio, temperature, pressure, WHSV, and H2/n-paraffin weight ratio were determined to be 20, 330 °C, 2 MPa, 1 h−1, and 0.20, respectively. Under these conditions, the bio-alkanes conversion and kerosene/gasoline ratio in the product reached 65.62% and 1.96, respectively.
Shape Selection of Alkane Hydroisomerization over One-Dimensional Zeolite Supported Pt Catalyst: Pt/ZSM-48 versus Pt/ZSM-22

Abstract:Hydroisomerization of long-chain n-alkanes plays a vital role in petrochemical and coal chemical industries, because it can produce high-quality hydrocarbon fuels and lubricant base oils. ZSM-48 (0.56 ×0.53 nm) and ZSM-22 (0.57 nm×0.46 nm) are characteristic of one-dimensional 10-ring zeolites suitable for n-alkane hydroisomerization reaction. Here, the effect of the structure difference between ZSM-48 and ZSM-22 zeolites on hydroisomerization is titrated by the isobutane and n-dodecane. The product distribution of hydroisomerization of isobutane to n-butane shows the reaction pathway on Pt/ZSM-48 and Pt/ZSM-22, in which the monomolecular hydroisomerization of isobutane is involved within the active sites in zeolite channels, while the polymerization-cracking bimolecular reaction occurs on the pore-mouth of zeolite. Pt/ZSM-48 zeolite, possessing larger channel and aperture size than those of Pt/ZSM-22, is more conducive to the diffusion of butane molecules and bimolecular polymerization. Therefore, the isobutane conversion (14 %) on Pt/ZSM-48 produces less C 1 +C 2 (1.73 wt% vs. 3.41 wt%) and more C 3 +C 5 +C 8 (19.22 wt% vs. 16.92 wt%). For the hydroisomerization of n-dodecane, the iso-dodecane selectivity of Pt/ZSM-48 (43.32 wt%) is significantly higher than that of Pt/ZSM-22 (12.38 wt%) at the similar n-C 12 conversion (40 %). Compare with the isomers of Pt/ZSM-22, the mono-branched isomers with methyl near the middle of the chains and multi-branched isomers are more easily formed on Pt/ZSM-48, which is conducive to the "key-lock" catalysis mechanism. The larger pore size of ZSM-48 is conducive to n-C 12 insertion into zeolite pores, methyl migration and isomer diffusion, and its adjacent pores are more compatible with double-branched isomers. In addition, a high selectivity of C 4 ∼C 5 alkanes (53.2 wt%) on Pt/ZSM-22 and a high selectivity of C 6 ∼C 9 alkanes (44.7 wt%) on Pt/ZSM-48 show obvious difference in cracking product distribution, implying different position of methyl groups in i-C 12 methyl on Pt/ZSM-22 and Pt/ZSM-48 samples, respectively. The present comparison between Pt/ZSM-48 and Pt/ZSM-22 benefits the selection and development of one-dimensional zeolite-supported metal catalyst in a wide range of hydro-processing reactions.

Abstract:ZSM-5 has emerged as a promising catalyst for iso-butane catalytic cracking due to its unique pore structures and abundant acid sites. And the optimization of catalytic performance has attracted more and more attention. Herein, a series of Pt and Mn-embedded Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn complexes were successfully synthesized via the one-pot hydrothermal method (x refers to the Mn/Pt ratio). The ligand effects of both ethylenediamine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt on the nature of target samples in terms of crystallinity, porosity, morphology, metal state, and acidity, were investigated in detail. It has been demonstrated that ethylenediamine served as a ligand enabled Pt-xMn@HZSM-5 more metal nanoparticles and acid sites, thereby delivering improved catalytic performance and high yields of ethylene, propylene and BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) for iso-butane catalytic cracking.

Abstract:Pt/Al-MCM-41 samples with constant metal loading but various pore sizes were hydrothermally synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant with different alkyl chain length (pore diameters ranging from 1.7 to 2.7nm). These samples were carefully characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, the infrared spectra, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and solid-state MAS NMR. Hydroconversion of n-heptane was carried out over these Pt/Al-MCM-41 samples. It was found that the steric restrictions are negligible for this catalytic system and high catalytic activity and high isomer yield were achieved. Another finding was that the radius of curvature of pore wall surface had effect on the hydroconversion of n-heptane. It was speculated that the main reason for the curvature effect in this particular model system was that the formation of alkylcarbenium ions, also denoted as the transfer of proton, was affected by the distribution of acid sites on the pore wall surface.

Abstract:Bifunctional platinum catalysts containing MCM-22, ZSM-5, SAPO-11 and H-Beta were tested for their hydroisomerization of n-hexadecane(n-C-16), and their catalytic activities and selectivity were compared. Pt/MCM-22 and Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts showed lower isomerization selectivity due to their strong acidity, while Pt/SAPO-11 and Pt/H-Beta catalysts showed higher selectivity. Through the analysis of the product distribution, the hydroisomerization mechanism on Pt/SAPO-11 was discussed. It was showed that the isomerization of long chain n-paraffins on medium pore zeolite took place at the external surface and pore mouth of the zeolite. The hydroisomerization selectivity was greatly influenced by the catalyst acidity. Weak and mild acids were favorable to isomerization.

Abstract:Isomerization of n-alkanes is industrially applied to improve the octane number of gasoline. The origin of shape selectivity and influence of micropore confinement in this reaction have not been fully understood. In this work, periodic DFT calculations have been performed to examine the mechanism for n-heptene isomerization in H-BEA and H-MFI. Three reaction pathways, including the protonated cyclopropane, edged-protonated cyclopropane, and alkyl shift mechanisms, have been examined. It is found the formation of smaller di-branched isomers is determined by product shape selectivity, but that of relatively bulky isomers is kinetically relevant and can be accounted for by transition-state shape selectivity.

Abstract:Processes for the isomerization of light alkanes have been commercialized; however, the isomerization of paraffins (CnH2n+2, n >= 7) remains a challenge. On mesoporous tungsten-zirconia catalyst supported Pt catalysts (Pt/WZrOx), initial isomerization productivity of 5249 mol(i-C7)/mol(Pt)/h was obtained for n-heptane reforming at 275 degrees C and 5 bar of hydrogen. The catalyst possessed quasi-monolayer and uniformly distributed WOx clusters ( diameter of similar to 0.5 nm), and Pt nanoparticles were preferentially deposited in close vicinity to these WOx sub-nanometer monolayers. The initial productivity over the best Pt/WZrOx catalyst was 18 times higher than that of a corresponding physical mixture (0.8 wt % Pt/ZrO2 + WZrOx), highlighting the significance of intimacy between the Pt and WOx species. The isomerization could not be triggered until the acid density of the catalysts reached a threshold because of the necessity of close proximity between adequate acid sites and adjacent Pt metal sites. Meanwhile, the adjacency increased the metallicity of the supported Pt; thus, enabling easier activation of C-H bonds of C7H16. [GRAPHICS] .
Alumina-doped Pt/WOx/ZrO2 catalysts for n-heptane isomerization

Abstract:n-Heptane isomerization over Al2O3-doped Pt/WOx/ZrO2 (Pt/WZA) in comparison with Pt/WOx/ZrO2 (Pt/WZ) was studied in the presence of H2 at 200°C. Higher isomerization selectivity was observed for these catalysts. The catalytic activity depends strongly on surface WOx loading and calcination temperature of WOx/Al2O3–ZrO2 (WZA) and WOx/ZrO2 (WZ) supports. The maximum activity for both Pt/WZA and Pt/WZ catalysts occurs at a WOx concentration of 10wt.% W which is slightly higher than the theoretical monolayer capacities of WZA and WZ supports calcined at 800°C. Pt/WZA catalyst exhibits the higher maximum activity than Pt/WZ. The loss in activity observed at high H2 pretreatment temperatures appears to be due to the strong interaction between Pt and reduced WOx species.

Abstract:Five Pd/HZSM-5 n-hexane isomerization catalysts with palladium content (mass fraction) of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, respectively, were tested on a microreactor, with hydrocracking rate of 4.480 6%,3.481 7%,4.188 4%,4.585 8% and 2.818 2%, respectively. The conversion and isomerization rate increased slightly with increasing Pd content. Best stability of the catalysts was obtained at Pd mass fraction of 0.3%-0.5%. Inappropriately low Pd content may cause loss of activity and low selectivity of the catalysts.

The results show that the selectivity toward 2-butene increases with temperature, indicating the hydrogenation reactions are suppressed due to the low partial pressure of hydrogen under high temperature. The fraction of hydrogen in reactants significantly affects 1-butene conversion and 2-butene selectivity, and thus, this effect should be included in kinetics models. Comparing the proposed power-law, dual-site Langmuir-Hinshelwood, and single-site Langmuir-Hinshelwood models, the single-site Langmuir-Hinshelwood model is the best in predicting the experiments, implying that hydroisomerization and hydrogenation reactions may occur at the same type of active sites under the reaction conditions in this work. The activation energies of the hydroisomerization reactions are lower than those of the hydrogenation reaction, and the adsorption enthalpy of butenes is smaller than that of hydrogen.

The effects of the charateristics such as acid intensity and strength, metal dispersion, the ratio of metal and acid cites, pore dimension and size, crystal particle size on the activity, selectivity of the catalyst are systematically discussed. The recent progress of hydroisomerizalon catalyst is described. The methods of improving the activity and selectivity simultaneously are mentioned for respective kinds of catalyst.

Aromatization of n-C7 ~ n-C9 Alkanes on Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) Catalyst

Abstract:Alkane aromatization is a significant supplementary route for the preparation of value-added aromatic products. Although ZSM-5 zeolites have been widely used in alkanes aromatization, they always exhibit low catalytic stability, due to the diffusion limitation of medium-pore structure, resulting in rapid deactivation. Moreover, the excessive strong acid sites of ZSM-5 also induce serious cracking reaction. To overcome these issues, the pore structure and acidic property of ZSM-5 zeolite were controllably regulated using ammonium hexafluorosilicate (AHFS) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3) post-treatment method. After loading Pt, the Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) catalyst showed aromatic selectivity as high as 75.4%, with n-heptane conversion of 96.1%, at 550 °C and ambient pressure. More importantly, the catalytic lifetime reached 234 h. Even for the aromatization of n-octane and n-nonane with larger molecular size, the Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) still gave high aromatic selectivity of 82.7% and 83.4%, and n-octane and n-nonane conversion of 92.8% and 87.1%, along with the catalytic lifetime higher than 80 h. The results of XRD, N2 sorption, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, TEM/STEM, H2-TPR, CO-DRIFT and XPS indicated that using AHFS and K2CO3 post-treatment can not only produce more mesoporous to facilitate the diffusion of aromatic products, but also reduce the amount and strength of strong acid sites in ZSM-5 to avoid the over-cracking reaction. Moreover, the generated defect sites due to dealumination and the residual potassium ions (K+) on zeolite enhanced the interaction between Pt and ZSM-5 zeolite that effectively suppresses the aggregation and sintering of Pt particles.

Optimized kinetic study of the isomerization reaction over composite catalysts by applying response surface methodology

Abstract:The Pt/HZSM-5-(KCC-1, KIT-6, and SBA-3) catalysts were successfully used for the isomerization reaction of n -heptane. These catalysts were used to optimize this process at response surface methodology combined with central composite design. The effects of temperature, contact time, and flow rates of n -heptane and hydrogen, as some important variables, on the response (reaction rate) were studied. The analysis of variance gave a significant quartic model with good accuracy for estimating the reaction rates for these catalysts. The optimum conditions were obtained for the Pt/HZSM-5-SBA-3 catalyst at a temperature of 350 °C, contact time of 6 h, an H 2 flow rate of 20 cc min −1 and an n -C 7 flow rate of 2 cc h −1 with a reaction rate of 5.7 mol g −1 s −1 . The modeling results also showed that both the power law and Langmuir–Hinshelwood models agreed with the data obtained from catalytic performance ( R 2 > 0.9). The results show that the Pt/HZSM-5-SBA-3 catalyst has the lowest activation energy (13.64 kJ mol −1 ) and the highest reaction rate. The reaction order for hydrogen is in the range of − 0.03 to − 0.25 and that for n -C 7 is 0.88–1.19.

Isomerization of Alkane on Molecular Sieves Catalyst Loaded with Palladium

Abstract:Isomerization of n-dodecane on molecular sieves catalyst loaded with palladium, namely Pd/β, Pd/ZSM-22 and Pd/SAPO-11, in fixed-bed microreactor was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by means of IR and NH3-TPD to determine their surface acidity. Pd/β catalyst possessed high acidity and strong acid sites. Pd/SAPO-11 and Pd/ZSM-22 catalyst possessed similar medium strength acid sites, but Pd/SAPO-11 catalyst had less acid amount than Pd/ZSM-22 catalyst. Isomerization of n-dodecane on these catalysts showed that when n-dodecane conversion reached 65 %, order of selectivity to monomethyl and dimethyl isomers of dodecane was Pd/ZSM-22 ≈ Pd/ SAPO-11 > Pd/β, while activity order was Pd/β > Pd/ZSM-22 > Pd/SAPO-11. Pd/ZSM-22 catalyst was the most suitable for isomerization of long-chain alkanes. Reaction results from both microreactor and pilot plant revealed that activity of the molecular sieve-based Pd catalysts mainly depended upon acid strength and number of the acid sites, while their selectivity depended upon acid strength distribution.

Abstract:Oil derived products can be used effectively through the use of bifunctional catalysts in hydroconversion (hydroisomerization/hydrocracking) reactions. Therefore, the objective of this work was studying the n-hexadecane hydroisomerization using a bifunctional Pt/Al-SBA-15 catalyst, evaluating conversion and selectivity to mono branched products. The Al-SBA-15 support was synthesized by three different procedures, two described in literature, an innovator. The support was extensively characterized by several techniques. Pt was impregnated by incipient dry impregnation. The catalyst was characterized and activated. It was evaluated against the n-hexadecane isomerization in batch, 800 rpm, 280, 290 and 300 °C, and 55 bar, 0,052 grams of catalyst/ grams of reactant ratio. The conversion obtained was 100% for 30 h of reaction. The selectivity for mono-branched products obtained was 43% for all catalysts, remaining virtually constant with reaction time and temperature. Thus, this thorough work of bifunctional catalysts synthesis, characterization of the mesoporous support and application in hydroisomerization reactions, provides viable alternatives for the use of oil derived products in an efficient method.

Abstract:The nanoscale HZSM-5 (20-50nm) catalyst was prepared, and characterized by XRF, TEM, NH3-TPD and so on. The performance of the nanoscale HZSM-5 catalysts for conversion of n-octane, the mixture of n-octane and benzene was evaluated. The transformation behavior of both single and mixing hydrocarbons as the model reactants over the nanoscale HZSM-5 catalyst was investigated, the influences of the reaction conditions on product distribution were investigated, and reaction mechanism was also studied. The results indicate that the nanoscale HZSM-5 catalyst exhibits a higher ability to convert hydrocarbons, and the hydrocarbons were converted mainly into aromatics and iso-paraffins which have a high octane value by isomenization, aromatization, alkylation reactions and so on, as a result, the total amount of the iso-paraffins (C-4-C-6) and aromatics in products was above 90% (mass fraction). The aromatization from single hydrocarbons mainly produced benzene via dehydrocyclization process, whereas the aromatization from the mixing hydrocarbons formed alkyl-aromatics mostly by alkylation of benzene and small molecule hydrocarbons. The formation of benzene and C-9(+) could be restrained by regulating the reaction conditions. The analysis of the products shows that the cracking, aromatization and isomenization reaction of hydrocarbons such as octane and benzene-n-octane over the nanoscale HZSM-5 catalyst followed the carbonium ion mechanism.
Hydroisomerization of n-hexadecane over Pt/ZSM-48 catalysts: Effects of metal-acid balance and crystal morphology

Abstract:The wirelike, rodlike and corolla-like ZSM-48 zeolites with various SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (SARs) were successfully synthesized and exploited for the hydroisomerization of n-hexadecane (n-C16). The influences of metal-acid balance, acid sites quantity, crystal morphology and textural properties on n-C16 hydroisomerization performance were investigated primarily, via various characterization technique such as XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, N2 physisorption, NH3-TPD, and Py-IR. The CPt/CA ratios of various catalysts were calculated for the quantified expression of the metal-acid balance, and the acid sites quantity was seriously crucial for the consecutive acid-catalyzed reaction after CPt/CA ratios satisfied within an ideal range. Large external surface could accelerate the conversion rate, shorten the diffusional constraints and inhibit the cracking. The superiorities of satisfied CPt/CA values (0.12–0.15), high concentration of acid sites (>230 μmol/g) and large external surface (>120 m2/g) persuaded the Pt/Z(P)80, Pt/Z(H)60 and Pt/Z(H)80 samples to demonstrate wonderful hydroisomerization performance with outstanding yield around 80 wt% and excellent i-C16 selectivity over 91 wt%. Although Pt/Z(W)80 and Pt/Z(R)80 samples owned the relatively small crystal, the gloomy catalytic activity of them was observed due to their relatively low concentration of acid sites and external surface. Moreover, the presence of “key-lock” mechanism was verified by the observations of 7-methyl-pentadecane (7MC15) dominating in isomer products.

Abstract:The dehydrogenation of alkanes is a critical process to enable olefin upcycling in a circular economy. A suitable selective catalyst is required in order to avoid demanding reaction conditions and ensure the activation of the C–H bond rather than breaking the C–C bond, which is the weaker of the two. Herein, using periodic density functional theory, we have investigated the dehydrogenation of n‐pentane (as a model compound) on Pt and Ru surface catalysts. The results show that the first dehydrogenation occurs through the dissociative adsorption of the C–H bond, resulting in pentyl and H intermediates on the metal surfaces. A successive dehydrogenation creates pentene via a hydride di‐σ state, leaving the abstracted hydrogen atoms on the metal surfaces. In agreement with recent experiments, Pt and Ru catalysts show a similar reactivity trend: pentane dehydrogenation yields pent‐1‐ene and pent‐2‐ene. The simulations reveal that the 1st C–H dissociation is the rate‐determining step, whereas the double‐bonded alkenes (pent‐1‐ene and pent‐2‐ene) are formed due to fast successive dehydrogenation processes. Pt favors the formation of pent‐1‐ene, whereas Ru favors the formation of pent‐2‐ene.
