Abstract:A high-gain Raman free-electron laser oscillator is realized by using a Bragg reflection resonator with a limited pulse duration of the electron beam (0.4 MeV/800 A, 60 ns). The practical design of the Bragg reflectors is introduced. A concept of hybrid oscillator configuration which combines the high gain of a superradiant amplifier with the narrow bandwidth of a conventional oscillator (Fabry-Perot resonator) is put forward and is conformed by experimental results which shows that 14 MW peak power at 7.7 mm wavelength (bandwidth DELTA-lambda/lambda < 5%) with a 4.4% electronic efficiency is produced. Also, the comparison of the measured fundamental wavelength of radiation spectrum with the result of calculations has been made.

Abstract:A design of a free electron laser with distributed feedback has been proposed. Experiments of a Raman free electron laser with a Bragg cavity have made progress in SIOFM. Results of producing 14 MW peak power at 7.7 mm wavelength with 4.4% extraction efficiency using a 400 keV/800 A electron beam of 60 ns duration are reported. The radiation spectrum is measured and a bandwidth narrower than typical superradiation indicated that there is an oscillation in our device.

Abstract:Mode-locking and ultrashort pulse synchronous pumping arc the main ways to obtain ultrashort pulses from Raman fiber lasers. In the mode-locked Raman fiber lasers, high performance output can be achieved in the structure with equivalent saturable absorbers, but the limitation caused by the long gain fiber remains. The method of synchronous pumping can overcome this problem effectively and achieve excellent ultrafast Raman laser output. There is a great potential for the ultrafast Raman fiber laser technology, and future research will focus on further improving the overall performance of various ultrafast Raman fiber lasers and investigating new phenomena observed in these laser systems.

Abstract:Abstract.A scheme for an X-ray free electron laser is proposed, based on a Raman process occurring during the interaction between a moderately relativistic bunch of free electrons, and twin intense short pulse lasers interfering to form a transverse standing wave along the electron trajectories. In the high intensity regime of the Kapitza-Dirac effect, the laser ponderomotive potential forces the electrons into a lateral oscillatory motion, resulting in a Raman scattering process. I show how a parametric process is triggered, resulting in the amplification of the Stokes component of the Raman-scattered photons. Experimental operating parameters and implementations, based both on LINAC and Laser Wakefield Acceleration techniques, are discussed.

Abstract:A systematic investigation was made for the R-M transition and recombination lasers in strontium ions by the longitudinal pulse discharge-excited with the helium buffer gas in a quartz discharge tube of 9 mm inner diameter and 42cm electrode's separation. The laser power of each-line as a function of different working parameters, as well as the corresponding photo-electrical pulse waveforms were analyzed and observed for two kinds of optical cavity. A set of better operating parameters was also obtained for the multi-line strontium ion laser.

Abstract:We present a new scheme for an optical klystron harmonic free-electron laser and analyze this novel free-electron laser using Madey's theorem. Theoretical analysis indicates that higher harmonic emission power density and gain can be enhanced greatly using this new structural wiggler.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber laser has been proved to be an effective method to obtain ultrafast optical pulses at special wavelength. Yet, compared with conventional rare-earth doped counterparts, it is challenging for Raman fiber lasers to generate pulses with high pulse energy and short pulse duration. Here, we review three categories of ultrafast Raman fiber laser technologies and give detailed discussions on the advantages and challenges of each. In regards to mode-locking, different saturable-absorbers-based fiber lasers are compared and their common problem resulting from long cavity length are discussed. In terms of synchronously-pumping, several approaches to match the repetition rate of pulsed pump with the length of Raman fiber cavity are discussed, while the technical complexity of each method is analyzed. Moreover, the recently developed technology termed as nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is introduced, which turns out to be a simple and quality solution to generate high-energy femtosecond pulses with wavelength agility. Compared with the others, NOGM gathers various advantages including simple structure, long-term stability, high pulse energy and short pulse duration, which may effectively promote application expansion of ultrafast Raman fiber laser in the near future.

Abstract:A rate-equation-based model is established to describe the behavior of an intracavity optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped in an actively -switched Raman laser system. The intracavity photon densities and the initial population inversion density are assumed to be Gaussian distribution. These coupled rate equations are solved numerically. In the experiment, a laser diode end-pumped acousto-optically -switched KTP-OPO pumped by a Nd:YAG/ Raman laser is demonstrated. The output characteristics are studied carefully. And the experimental results about the average output power agree with the numerical solutions.

Abstract:We propose a grating-free, simple-design cascaded Raman random fiber laser assisted by Fresnel reflection. The simulation and the experimental results confirm the effectiveness of weak reflection on lasing generation, and the linearly output with 48.8% slope efficiency is demonstrated at the 2nd order Stokes wavelength.

Abstract:We have developed a first Raman FEL in China [1]. A recent experiment for improving the efficiency is reported. The wiggler length has been enlarged from 79 cm to 119 cm, the efficiency of 3.7% was obtained.

Abstract:A symmetry Optical Klystron (OK) with independently adjusted modulator, buncher and radiator has been designed and constructed for Storage Ring FEL in NSRL. The designed OK parameters are listed and checked by the 3-dimensional electromagnetic computation code and hall probe measurements. Special considerations are given for correction factors of OK analysis computation of single period buncher and multi-period undulators induced by 3d magnetic effects. The effect of undulator fill factor to the electron energy is analysed.

Abstract:We propose a new type of cascaded random distributed- feedback Raman fiber laser (RD-RFL), with the linear output at the second-order Stokes wavelength. The guideline about building such a RD-RFL with particular output power and conversion efficiency is presented based on numerical study. We also experimentally instantiate the principle, and confirm the effectiveness of the scheme on lasing generation. Moreover, the added Fresnel reflection feature maintains the simplicity and flexibility of the RD-RFL.

Abstract:The application of an optical klystron configuration to waveguide free electron laser systems is proposed either as a gain enhancement scheme or as a way to reduce the beam current necessary for a given gain requirement. An analytical formulation is developed for these devices in the small signal regime. The feasibility of an optical klystron arrangement for FEL systems operating in the far infrared and submillimetre regions is studied. It is shown that with the excellent beam quality of electrostatic accelerators, the optical klystron scheme is an effective means to improve the small signal gain.

Abstract:A detailed study of the electron beam bunching problem is presented for optical klystron devices. It is found that the conventional optical klystron configuration is intrinsically inefficient in optimizing the electron beam bunching and thus undermines the interaction gain that can be achieved. To overcome this problem, a multiharmonic wiggler is proposed as the first wiggler section of an optical klystron. By optimizing the electron beam bunching, this arrangement is capable of producing a gain enhancement at the fundamental frequency of up to 75% over what is attainable in a conventional optical klystron. More importantly, its beam quality requirement is found to be comparable to that of conventional optical klystrons. This modified optical klystron configuration should be particularly useful for short wavelength generation for which both a sizable gain and an affordable beam quality requirement are important.

Abstract:To achieve tens of kilowatt (kW) output power, W-band klystron usually employs a large beam tunnel to accommodate high current. The deteriorated effective impedance of the cavity could be reenhanced by adopting extended interaction (EI) cavities. In this article, a new approach utilizing simple fundamental modes in cascaded single-gap cavities for W-band klystron is proposed and discussed. Although the effective impedance of each cavity is far lower than its EI klystron (EIK) counterpart, this disadvantage could be efficiently compensated by densely populating those single-gap cavities using the kladistron technology previously conceived for the C-or X-band high-efficiency (HE) klystrons. However, kladistron is rarely reported and normally regarded as less a promising HE bunching technique overwhelmed by the self-excitation issues caused by adjacent mode coupling. Fortunately, such instability could be naturally suppressed in a higher frequency regime, so further exploration of kladistron technology is intriguing. In this article, an exemplary 30-kW W-band klystron equipped with big circular beam tunnel is designed using the kladistron technology, which finally shows no instability issues in 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. This novel device delivers up to 37% electronic efficiency and 24% RF efficiency, validating that the kladistron concept is well suited for this millimeter-wave amplifier, which indicates possible HE substitutes for existing EIK technology.
