Abstract:We have developed a first Raman FEL in China [1]. A recent experiment for improving the efficiency is reported. The wiggler length has been enlarged from 79 cm to 119 cm, the efficiency of 3.7% was obtained.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FELs) are fourth-generation light sources that deliver extremely high intensity, ultrashort light pulses over a broad wavelength range from far-infrared to hard x ray. FELs based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission principle have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and a broad wavelengths tuning range with good transverse coherence but poor temporal coherence. In contrast, the laser-seeded FELs have provided full coherence but at selected central wavelengths, usually the harmonics of the laser seeds, with relatively narrower tuning range. We report the experimental demonstration of a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) FEL that is continuously tunable over a wide range using the combination of optical parametrical amplification, variable-gap undulator, and harmonic selection, where the temporal coherence is preserved as confirmed with the Michelson interferometry. In order to achieve higher photon energies, the first try of cascaded HGHG with a fresh-bunch technique is also made at the Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet Free-electron Laser test facility.

Abstract:Free electron laser (FEL) oscillator is a very effective method to produce the tunable and high-intense laser in the infrared and terahertz regions. However, in an FEL oscillator, normally only a small portion of the electron beam’s kinetic energy is converted into the optical field. Inspired by the earlier work on the Israeli EA FEL, in this paper we investigate increasing the efficiency of RF-linac based FEL oscillators through ramping up the electron beam energy moderately in the post-saturation regime. Based on theoretical analysis, the optimal beam energy ramping amplitude and the possible maximum efficiency enhancement are presented. Three-dimension simulations with the FELiChEM parameters show that, through ramping the electron energy from the saturation point by 1.9% and 2.68% for the FEL wavelengths of 10μm and 30μm, respectively, about 3.6 and 9.1 times enhancements of the FEL efficiency at the new saturation are achieved. The simulation results are consistent with the analytical prediction. This scheme may also benefit the x-ray FEL oscillators.

Abstract:To achieve high-efficiency operation of the high-gain free-electron laser (FEL), the electron beams and radiated photon beams need to be overlapped precisely and pass through the entire undulator section. Therefore, a high-resolution beam-position monitor (BPM) is required. A cavity BPM (CBPM) with a resonant cavity structure was developed and used in the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL (SXFEL) test facility and can achieve a position resolution of $$< {1}\upmu \mathrm{m}$$ . The construction and operation of the SXFEL user facility also bring about higher requirements for beam-position measurement. In this case, the factors that affect the performance of the CBPM system were further analyzed. These included the amplitude and phase stability of the local oscillator, stability of the trigger signal, performance of the radio frequency front-end, signal processing electronics, and signal processing algorithms. Based on the upgrade and optimization of the system, a beam test platform was built at the end of the linear acceleration section of the SXFEL, and the experimental results show that the position resolution of the system can reach 177 nm at a bunch charge of 500 pC, and the dynamic range is controlled within $$\pm {300}\upmu \mathrm{m}$$ , and the relative measurement uncertainty of the bunch charge can reach 0.021 $$\%$$ , which are significant improvements compared to the attributes of the previous system.

Abstract:We report the experimental characterization of efficiency enhancement in a single-pass seeded free-electron laser (FEL) where the electron energy is detuned from resonance. Experiments show a doubling of the efficiency for beam energies above the resonant energy. Measurements of the FEL spectra versus energy detuning shows that the wavelength is governed by the seed laser. The variation in the gain length with beam energy was also observed. Good agreement is found between the experiment and numerical simulations using the MEDUSA simulation code. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A grating spectrometer is developed for Raman free electron laser (FEL) diagnostics. Spectral measurements of a Raman FEL by a microwave grating spectrometer are presented. The aluminum reflection gratings with groove constant d = 7.5 mm, d = 3.5 mm and blaze angle theta = 30-degrees are used. The spectrometer provides spectral coverage in the ranges of 6-10 mm and 2.2-4.8 mm with a resolution of 0.3 mm for an angle of incidence alpha = 60-degrees. The experimental results show that the central frequency of the spectra decreases with increasing the wiggler magnetic field, which is in accordance with the theoretical predictions concerned with waveguide mode effects on the collective FEL. The spectrum of an FEL oscillator with distributed feedback cavity was measured. 3 mm FEL radiation using a small-period wiggler is obtained.

Abstract:After having obtained spontaneous emission of the CAEP FIR- FEL, we have made some improvements for the electron beam. A new thermionic cathode 1 + 1/2 cavity is used to get better emitting performance than the old one at the same condition, and a new beam transport line is designed for better transport efficiency. We are continuing to perform further experiments. The machine performance and some new results will be presented in this paper.

Abstract:A design of a free electron laser with distributed feedback has been proposed. Experiments of a Raman free electron laser with a Bragg cavity have made progress in SIOFM. Results of producing 14 MW peak power at 7.7 mm wavelength with 4.4% extraction efficiency using a 400 keV/800 A electron beam of 60 ns duration are reported. The radiation spectrum is measured and a bandwidth narrower than typical superradiation indicated that there is an oscillation in our device.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and excellent transverse coherence at X-ray wavelengths 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . One of the next goals for further improvements is full coherence 5 , 6 . An obvious approach is to seed the free-electron laser interaction using a conventional source that has good temporal coherence 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Here, we show the first lasing of a free-electron laser with an echo-enabled harmonic generation scheme 11 , which shows great promise for producing coherent lasing at short wavelengths, even in the X-ray regime. The experiment was conducted at a test facility 13 , 14 that combines a 135.4 MeV electron accelerator with an amplifier consisting of a series of undulator magnets. Lasing was achieved at the third harmonic of the seed with a gain of ∼100,000 over spontaneous radiation. The measurements show typical exponential growth and excellent spectral characteristics, as well as good intensity stability.

Abstract:We study high efficiency, multi-terawatt peak power, few angstrom wavelength, X-ray Free Electron Lasers (X-ray FELs). To obtain these characteristics we consider an optimized undulator design: superconducting, helical, with short period and built-in strong focusing. This design reduces the length of the breaks between modules, decreasing diffraction effects, and allows using a stronger transverse electron focusing. Both effects reduce the gain length and the overall undulator length. The peak power and efficiency depend on the transverse electron beam distribution and on time dependent effects, like synchrotron sideband growth. The last effect is identified as the main cause for reduction of electron beam microbunching and FEL peak power. We show that the optimal functional form for the undulator magnetic field tapering profile, yielding the maximum output power, depends significantly on these effects. The output power achieved when neglecting time dependent effects for an LCLS-like X-ray FEL with a 100 m long tapered undulator is 7.3 TW, a 14 $\%$ electron beam energy extraction efficiency. When these effects are included the highest peak power is achieved reducing the tapering rate, thus minimizing the reduction in electron micro-bunching due to synchrotron sideband growth. The maximum efficiency obtained for this case is 9 $\%$, corresponding to 4.7 TW peak radiation power. Possible methods to suppress the synchrotron sidebands, and further enhance the FEL peak power, up to about 6 TW by increasing the seed power, are discussed.

Abstract:A new free-electron laser (FEL) scheme, using a periodic electrostatic field superposed on an electrostatic centrifugal system, is presented. By means of linear fluid theory, the Raman FEL dispersion equation is derived. We show that there is a new FEL instability near the electron transverse resonance besides the usual one near the beam resonance. The operating conditions, emission frequencies, and maximum growth rates of these two kinds of instabilities are obtained analytically. It is found that these results are in quite good agreement with numerical solutions of the dispersion equation.

Abstract:A free electron laser (FEL) amplifier with a curved parallel plate waveguide and a planar wiggler is presented. A set of operating equations for this FEL amplifier is derived by using the three-dimensional nonlinear theory. The characteristics including the evolution of power, efficiency and bandwidth of the FEL operating at the frequency of 94 GHz are numerically analyzed. The effects of electron energy spread and wiggler taper on saturation efficiency are also studied.

Abstract:In the past decade, the fourth-generation light source based on the combination of Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) and Free-Electron Laser (FEL) using superconducting linear accelerators has garnered significant attention. It holds immense potential, particularly in generating high-power Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) light sources. This article primarily focuses on the physical design of an injector for ERL-FEL, based on a Very High Frequency (VHF) electron gun with a charge of 100 pC. The beam energy is accelerated to 10 MeV using 3-cell superconducting cavity. The optimization of beam parameters is conducted through employment of BMad and ASTRA simulations, incorporating the concept of Merger optimization. The beam emittance is less than 0.6 mm mrad, and the peak current at the injector exit exceeds 18 A. We present a new method to evaluate the Longitudinal Space Charge (LSC) effects in merger sections, which can be readily applied in design work. Furthermore, we introduce a novel type of merger. The performance of this new merger is comparable to the previously known optimum, the zigzag merger, offering a potential alternative solution for injectors in ERLs.

Abstract:Undulator tapering based on a prebunched electron beam and a strong seed laser has been demonstrated as a promising method to greatly enhance free-electron laser (FEL) efficiency and suppress sideband instability. Different from the former works that introduce an ideal bunching or a seed laser or a self-seeding mechanism, in this paper, we propose to enhance FEL efficiency by optimizing the tapering strategy with a prebunched electron beam from echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG). The simulation results demonstrate that the efficiency enhancement can be effectively maintained in a quite long undulator, in which the whole FEL efficiency is improved by more than 2 orders and a clear center spectrum inherited from EEHG can be preserved. Benefitting from a stable initial phase space with an appropriate tapering strategy, the nature of stabilities can be well preserved at both time and frequency domain. Through jumping the resonant phase, an effective sideband suppression can be realized and the stability of output power is improved. In this scheme, the inhomogeneous shot noise and microbunching instability also have an important impact on efficiency enhancement and output stability. It shows a different instability feature from the first stage to the following tapered undulator in comparison to the self-seeding tapered scheme.

Abstract:FELiChEM is a new experimental facility under construction at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), whose core device is two free electron laser oscillators generating middle-infrared and far-infrared laser and covering the spectral range of 2.5-200 $\mu$m. It will be a dedicated infrared light source aiming at energy chemistry research. We present the brief design of FEL oscillators with the emphasis put on the middle-infrared oscillator. Most of the basic parameters are determined and the anticipated performance of the output radiation is given. The first light of FELiChEM is targeted for the end of 2017.

Abstract:FELiChEM is a new infrared free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator user facility in Hefei, and has achieved the first lasing at 15μm in June, 2019. To improve the temporal resolution for fulfilling the user demands, in this context, we propose an operation mode of generating high-power ultra-short FEL pulses by shortening the electron bunch and enhancing the FEL gain with a small cavity length detuning. The existing magnetic chicane is used to compress the electron bunch and increase its peak current. Taking the 10μm FEL as an example, start-to-end simulations demonstrate that the FEL power can be greatly enhanced while the pulse duration is as short as one hundred femtoseconds. An energy slit provides an additional option that can further shorten the bunch length and reduce the energy spread by cutting off the bunch head and tail. With the energy slit on, all the minor spikes inside the FEL pulse will be further suppressed and only the main spike will be preserved.

Abstract:At University of Science and Technology of China, we have an Infrared (IR) free electron laser (FEL) oscillator experimental facility (FELiChEM) to generate radiations in the wavelength range of 2.5-50 m and 40-200 m. The output power is one of the most concerned parameters by the users. Since the electron beam distribution and the out-coupling hole in the resonator mirror can influence the saturated power and the optical mode, it would be an important issue to the output power of the IR light source. It has been demonstrated that use of a hollow electron beam could offer a higher saturated power than use of a Gaussian electron beam. Thus we consider the operation of FELiChEM with a hollow beam, and analyze its effect on FEL performance.

Abstract:The percent level energy spread and large divergence of laser-plasma beam are the main challenges of realizing compact short-wavelength free-electron lasers based on laser-plasma accelerators. These issues can be solved with proposed transverse gradient undulator method or bunch decompression method along with proper transport design. We present a study of using an expected 500 MeV laser-plasma beam with 0.3 mm. mrad normalized emittance and 0.3 mrad divergence at Peking University to drive compact free-electron laser at 30 nm. We employ the bunch decompression method with a chromatic matching beamline as well as the transverse gradient undulator method with assumed matched beam. Simulation shows that 700 MW power, 9.7 fs pulse duration and 0.85% relative bandwidth FEL output can be obtained using chromatic matched bunch decompression method. FEL with similar performance can be obtained using the transverse gradient undulator scheme.
