Abstract:Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are polymeric nanofibers that have been drawing tremendous attention as new nanoscale building blocks of advanced composites. Herein, we report a new strategy to rapidly synthesize functionalized ANFs (fANFs) through polymerization-induced self-assembly of poly(phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) using soluble sulfonated PPTA to tailor the size of fANTs, and the extraordinary reinforcing and toughening effect of fANFs on epoxy (EP) resin and multiscale carbon fiber (CF)/EP composites. With a diameter of similar to 30 nm, and reactive sulfonic acid groups on the surfaces, the branched fANFs can be easily dispersed in EP and are reactive with the matrix, therefore, remarkably improve the interfacial interaction and mechanical properties (including both strength and toughness) of EP at low fANF contents. The tensile strength, Young's modulus, toughness and elongation at break of fANFs/EP nanocomposites are increased by similar to 59%, similar to 19%, similar to 112% and similar to 36%, respectively. The flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength, total energy dissipation and flexural strain at break of fANFs/CF/EP multi-scale composite are increased by similar to 57%, similar to 38%, similar to 65% and similar to 71%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the enhancement in the strengths is comparative with those provided by graphene oxide, and the total fracture energy and flexural strain at break are more significantly increased by fANFs than almost all of the nanofillers ever reported.

Abstract:Aramid paper based on poly (p-phenylene terephthamide) (PPTA) is a typically excellent insulation material, but the common preparation is complex and tedious. In this work, using the PPTA based aramid nanofibers (ANFs) synthesized by the bottom-up polymerization induced self-assembly process, insulation paper was fabricated through the vacuum assisted filtration without any high pressure or high temperature treatment. Importantly, the ANF paper exhibits improved electrical insulation, desired mechanical strength and good thermal stability, which is attributed to the tightly weaved architecture formed by the nanofibers. Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRCs) are widely used in the aviation, aerospace and automotive industries. The modification of CFRCs with nanomaterials has attracted extensive research interests in recent years. Herein, we report the preparation of novel carboxylated aramid nanofibers (cANFs) by polymerization induced self-assembly, i.e. polycondensation of para-phenylenediamine with terephthaloyl chloride in the presence of a polyamide acid as both a dispersant and surface modifier, for the modification of epoxy resin and CFRCs. cANFs effectively improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, and after being sprayed onto CF fabrics, greatly improve the mechanical properties of CFRCs. With the addition of only 0.42 mg/cm2 of cANFs on each CF sheets, storage modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and total energy dissipation are enhanced by 27 %, 51 %, 29 % and 67 %, respectively; interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and Mode II interlayer fracture toughness (GIIC) are improved by 24 % and 74 %, respectively. cANFs can be comparable or even superior to most previously reported carbon nanomaterials in improving flexural strength and ILSS; and exceed most previously reported electrospun nanofibrous mats in increasing GIIC. This study provides a new method for the rapid synthesis of functionalized ANFs to simultaneously increase the flexural properties and interlayer properties of CFRCs.

Abstract:Mechanically strong, electrically conductive, and flexible pristine graphene-based composite paper was prepared based on heterocyclic aramid nanoparticle-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite. The macroscopic heterocyclic aramid yarns were split and assembled into heterocyclic aramid nanoparticles with the size of ~30 nm by deprotonation in dimethylsulfoxide in the presence of potassium hydroxide. The obtained heterocyclic aramid nanoparticles dimethylsulfoxide dispersion was used as good medium solvent for highly efficiency liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite. The results demonstrated that the concentration of exfoliated graphene can facile reaches ~2.72 mg/mL after direct sonication of 7 h with assist of heterocyclic aramid nanoparticles. After exfoliation, the self-assembled pristine graphene-based composite paper was fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration. Due to the introduction of heterocyclic aramid nanoparticles, the self-assembled pristine graphene/heterocyclic aramid nanoparticles composite paper exhibited good mechanical property with tensile strength of ~129.7 MPa, meantime, has a high electrical conductivity of ~1.42 × 10 4 S/m. Abstract:The construction of heterocyclic aramid nanofibers (HNFs) was reported for the first time in this study by a polymerization-induced self-assembly method. 2-(4-Aminophenyl)-5-aminobenzimidazole was introduced as the third monomer to participate in the polymerization of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) and HNFs were successfully prepared based on the balance of the solvent isolation effect and intermolecular interaction. Subsequently, HNFs were fabricated into nanopaper, which has uniform micro-nano structures and significantly improved mechanical properties and electrical insulation.

Abstract:Carbon Nanotube (CNT), for its excellent mechanical, electrical properties and nano size, large special surface physical property, become the most promising material. But carbon nanotube can still fabricated in micro dimension, and can't be made into macro size, so to the carbon nanotube filled composite can't explore the properties of the CNT. Carbon nano-paper is made of pure CNT, with micro pore, and it turn micro sized CNT into macro shaped membrane. Based on the piezo-resistivity and electrical conductivity of the carbon nano-paper, we used the carbon nano-paper as functional layers fabricate functional composite, and studies its strain sensing, composite material deicing and shape memory polymer (SMP) material electric actuation performance. The results shown that the resin can pregnant the nano paper, and there was good bond for nano paper and composite. The functional composite can monitoring the strain with high sensitivity comparing to foil strain gauge. The functional composite can be heated via the carbon nano paper with low power supply and high heating rate. The composite has good deicing and heat actuation performance to composite material. For the good strain sensing, electric conductivity and self-heating character of the carbon nano-paper composite, it can be used for self sensing, anti lightning strike and deicing of composite materials in aircrafts and wind turbine blades.

Abstract:The new structures and multifunctional materials is that it can achieve some other special functions while it has ability to carry, such as wave-transparent, absorbing, anti-lightning, anti-heat, anti-nuclear etc. It represents the direction of future development of structural materials. And graphene is the one of two-dimensional atomic crystal free substance only found in the existence and shows great importance for fundamental studies and technological applications due to its unique structure and a wide range of unusual properties. It exhibits great promise for potential applications in chemistry, materials, and many other technological fields. In this paper, we prepare nanopaper through physical vapor deposition (PVD) with a variety in the weight ratio between graphene and nanofiber. Then prepare composite materials with nanopaper and T300/AG80 prepreg by the meaning of autoclave molding. The morphology of nanopaper was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). And the electrical properties and the EMI shielding performances of these nanocomposites have been investigated experimentally by and four-point probe measurement and vector network analyzer. The experimental results indicate that the composites made from graphene and nanofiber nanopaper have highly electric capability, and the EMI shielding value of composites were all up to -15dB. In the same time the conductivity and the EMI shielding performances were improved with increasing the ratio of graphene in nanopaper. We tested the mechanical properties of composite materials at the same time. The average strength of composite materials is about 2000MPa, the elastic modulus is 130GPa above. We are sure that it can be used as the load-bearing structural material which has a multi-functional performance in the aviation field.
Mechanically Strong Electrically Insulated Nanopapers with High UV Resistance Derived from Aramid Nanofibers and Cellulose Nanofibrils

Abstract:Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) have great potential for civil and military applications due to their remarkable mechanical modulus, excellent chemical reliability, and superior thermostability. Unfortunately, the weak combination of neighboring ANFs limits the mechanical properties of ANF-based materials owing to their inherent rigidity and chemical inertness. Herein, high-performance nanopapers are fabricated by introducing a tiny amount of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) to serve as reinforcing blocks via vacuum filtration. As a result of the formation of nanosized building blocks and hydrogen-bonding interaction of CNFs, the resultant ANF/CNF nanopaper yields a record-high tensile strength (406.43 ± 16.93 MPa) and toughness (86.13 ± 5.22 MJ m–3), which are 1.8 and 4.3 times higher than those of the pure ANF nanopaper, respectively. When normalized by weight, the specific tensile strength of the nanopaper is as high as 307.90 MPa·g–1·cm3, which is even significantly superior to that of titanium alloys (257 MPa·g–1·cm3). The ANF/CNF nanopaper also possesses excellent dielectric strength (53.42 kV mm–1), superior UV-shielding performance (≥99.999% absorption for ultraviolet radiation), and a favorable thermostability (Tonset = 530 °C). A Facile Method to Prepare Nanoscale Polyacrylonitrile Particles Grafted Aramid Fibers for Superior Interfacial and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Composites

Abstract:A very simple and efficient method was developed to improve the interfacial properties of aramid fibers reinforced composites. The aramid fibers and the acrylonitrile (AN) monomers were mutually irradiated by γ‐ray in cyclohexane solution, initiating AN to polymerize on the fibers surface. Surface morphologies, chemical structure, mechanical behavior, thermal stability of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) grafted aramid fibers and interfacial properties of their composites were systematically characterized. The results indicated that the linear PAN fantastically united to be nanoscale particles with 200 nm size, and grafted on the aramid fibers surface uniformly and compactly. Despite a slight decrease with 4°C in fiber heat resistance, the mass loss of the PAN‐grafted fibers significantly reduced. Surprisingly, the interfacial shear strength of PAN grafted aramid fibers improved by 71.50% from 36.33 ± 1.08 to 62.31 ± 1.32 MPa. Moreover, the tensile strength of aramid fibers enhanced slightly. This surface modification strategy is facile to prepare, highly efficient to enhance interface, adaptable to other organic fibers, and meaningful in multifunctional applications. POLYM. A Synergistic Interfacial and Topological Strategy for Reinforcing Aramid Nanofiber Films.

Abstract:While nanomaterials possess impressive mechanical properties at the microscale level, their macroscopic assemblies usually exhibit inferior properties due to ineffective stress transfer among individual nanomaterials. This issue is addressed in this work by achieving strong interfacial interactions between aramid nanofibers and graphene oxide nanosheets through a neutralization reaction in a dipolar solvent and regulating the topological properties using polymer micelles to form a compact structure, leading to the formation of a super-strong and super-tough nanofiber film. The film was prepared through a sol-gel-film transition process and possesses a nacre-like microstructure that deflects microcracks and prevents them from propagating straight through the film. Remarkably, it demonstrates a tensile strength of 599.0 MPa and a toughness of 37.7 MJ m(-3), which are 491.0% and 1094.5% that of a pristine aramid nanofiber film, respectively. In addition, it exhibits excellent tolerance to extreme temperatures (-196 to 300 & DEG;C) and fatigue resistance to folding 10 000 times. Overall, this study presents a synergistic interfacial and topological enhancement strategy for constructing nanomaterial-based composites with inherited properties from the nanoscale building blocks to the macroscale structural material.
Preparation and application of aramid nanofiber via carbodiimide assisted polymerization

Abstract:Poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA), is well known as a material with excellent properties, but its application is greatly limited due to the harsh methods required for its preparation. This study proposes an innovative carbodiimide-assisted polymerization (CAP) method to simplify the synthesis process of PPTA. The η inh of the prepared PPTA is 4.97 dL/g. Achieving amidation condensation at normal temperature and pressure, this method is suitable for synthesizing PPTA and allows for the recycling of the condensation reagent, offering a novel approach to green synthesis. Compared to the commercial fiber Kevlar 29, PPTA exhibits similar thermal stability, with negligible decomposition before 500 °C. Using the deprotonation method to prepare aramid nanofiber (ANF) resulted in various shapes of bulk materials. The ANF bulk exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with tensile and compressive strengths of 36.9 MPa and 60.68 MPa, respectively, on par with standard engineering materials. Additionally, ANF and PPTA share similar thermal stability. Furthermore, the study prepared aramid nanofiber/partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (ANF/HPAM) composite paper, which demonstrated outstanding mechanical performance and thermal stability. The ANF/HPAM composite paper (2.0 wt% concentration of HPAM) exhibited a tensile strength of 63.32 MPa. These findings offer new insights into developing high-performance fiber materials.

Abstract:Currently, polymer-fiber composite films face the challenge of striking a balance between good mechanical properties and multi-functionalities. Here, aramid fibers (ANFs), chitosan (CS) dendritic particles, and silver nanowires (AgNWs) were used to create high-performance multifunctional composite films. AgNWs and polymer dendritic particles form an interpenetrating segregated network that ensures both a continuous conductive filler and a polymer network. Electrostatic assembly eliminates repulsion between negatively charged ANFs, cross-linked CS particles generate a stable three-dimensional network, and a "brick-mortar" structure composed of multiple materials contributes to topological enhancement. Sintering encourages local overlap and fusing of the AgNWs while reducing their internal flaws. Based on the above strategy, these films achieve a strength of 306.5 MPa, a toughness of 26.5 MJ m −3 , and a conductivity of 392 S cm −1 . Density functional theory (DFT) and Comsol simulations demonstrate that the introduction of CS thin layers leads to strong hydrogen bonds and three-dimensional continuous conductive networks. With its outstanding mechanical and electrical properties, the AgNW@ANF/CS-CH film demonstrates excellent electromagnetic shielding (22 879.1 dB cm 2 g −1 ) and Joule heating (70 °C within 10 s) capabilities. This work presents a novel approach to fabricate high-performance conductive films and expand their potential applications in lightweight wearable electronics and electrothermal therapy.

Abstract:Stable dispersions of nanofibers are virtually unknown for synthetic polymers. They can complement analogous dispersions of inorganic components, such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanosheets, etc. as a fundamental component of a toolset for design of nanostructures and metamaterials via numerous solvent-based processing methods. As such, strong flexible polymeric nanofibers are very desirable for the effective utilization within composites of nanoscale inorganic components such as nanowires, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and others. Here stable dispersions of uniform high-aspect-ratio aramid nanofibers (ANFs) with diameters between 3 and 30 nm and up to 10 μm in length were successfully obtained. Unlike the traditional approaches based on polymerization of monomers, they are made by controlled dissolution of standard macroscale form of the aramid polymer, that is, well-known Kevlar threads, and revealed distinct morphological features similar to carbon nanotubes. ANFs are successfully processed into films using layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly as one of the potential methods of preparation of composites from ANFs. The resultant films are transparent and highly temperature resilient. They also display enhanced mechanical characteristics making ANF films highly desirable as protective coatings, ultrastrong membranes, as well as building blocks of other high performance materials in place of or in combination with carbon nanotubes.
Design of sandwich-structured para-aramid paper with polyphenylene sulfide non-woven fabric for enhancing mechanical properties and breakdown strength

Abstract:The rapid development of national defense, military industry, and aerospace puts forward higher requirements to the mechanical property, breakdown strength, dielectric properties, and heat resistance of high-performance aramid paper. However, the vast majority of aramid paper-based materials can hardly have a combination of satisfactory high mechanical properties and breakdown strength due to the porous structure of paper-based materials. Herein, we report a para-aramid chopped fibers/polyphenylene sulfide (ACFs/PPS) composite paper with a sandwich structure by designing the structure of aramid paper. Dense PPS microfiber membrane as robust armor filled and repaired the voids and defects on ACFs/PPS composite paper. Additionally, strong barrier interfaces between PPS film and ACFs/PPS composite paper effectively slow down the transmission of voltage to the inside of the composite paper. Thus we obtain the sandwich-structured ACFs/PPS composite paper with excellent mechanical strength (158.7 MPa) and breakdown strength (55 kV/mm), which are almost 1.5 and 2.5 times higher than ACFs/PPS composite paper, respectively. Besides, excellent mechanical properties and breakdown strength are wonderfully integrated with superior dielectric properties (tan delta <0.0035), chemical stability, and thermal stability (DTGmax > 575 degrees C), far superior to reported aramid paper-based materials. This work plays an important role in fabricating fabulous multi-attribute combinations of aramid paper-based materials and can also be extended to other materials and structures.

Abstract:Aramid Nanofibers (ANFs), akin to PPTA Poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide), stand at the forefront of cutting-edge nanomaterials, boasting exceptional properties like high tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, high temperature stability, and chemical stability. Their remarkable advantages have already paved the way for diverse applications in composite materials, energy devices, protection, adsorption, and groundbreaking medical products. Due to the unique properties of ANFs, there has been strong interests in the research community on the functional ANF- based composites and their applications in cutting-edge fields, there has been a lack of comprehensive reviews on the fundamental development and practical applications of ANFs regarding these most recent results (e.g., the last three years). This review aims to fill that void by thoroughly exploring the potential of ANFs. We delve into the preparation methods, uncovering techniques for preparing ANFs with specific properties and morphologies. Additionally, we critically evaluate the fascinating mechanisms driving these extraordinary properties, which stem from their nanoscale dimensions and high aspect ratio. Furthermore, we closely examine the distinct characteristics of ANFs-based composites in various forms, i.e., 1D, 2D, and 3D structure, especially in relevance to their specific applications. Also, this paper discusses the major challenges and future prospects of ANFs composites. This comprehensive review and outlook will inspire readers to gain a better understanding of the latest development status and future research directions of ANFs and ANFs-based materials.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) aramid nanofiber (ANF) based nanocomposite films have drawn increasing attentions in various applications due to their excellent mechanical properties and impressive chemical and thermal stabilities. However, the large-area fabrication of aramid nanocomposite films with ultrastrong mechanical properties under mild conditions remains a great challenge. Here we present a facile superspreading-assisted strategy to produce aramid nanofiber based oriented layered nanocomposites using phase inversion process that occurs at the fully swollen hydrogel surfaces. The nanocomposite films based on ANF, carboxylation carbon tube (CNT –COOH ), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and MXene nanosheet exhibit a tensile strength of up to 870.8 ± 85 MPa, a Young's modulus of 21.8 ± 2.2 GPa, and outstanding toughness (up to 43.2 ± 4.6 MJ/m 3 ), which are much better than those conventional aramid nanofiber based materials. Electrical conductivity of our nanocomposite films reaches the maximum of about 1100 S/m. The fabulous mechanical properties combination and continuous production capability render our strategy representing a promising direction for the development of high-performance nanocomposites.

Abstract:Aramid fiber is a kind of high-performance fiber with high strength, high modulus and excellent heat resistance. However, due to its surface inertness, its performances are sometimes not well utilized in the preparation of composites. The emergence of nanoscale aramid fiber has greatly improved the specific surface area of aramid fiber, which is helpful for its interface fusion with the matrix. In this work, we successfully prepared laminated polymerization-induced aramid nanofiber (PANF) aerogel framework/epoxy resin composite with excellent performances. The preparation process mainly consisted the fabrication of laminated PANF aerogel through the combination of vacuum-assisted self-assembly and ice-templated directional solidification technique, and the preparation of PANF aerogel reinforced epoxy resin composite through vacuum-assisted transfer method. The composite demonstrated improved mechanical property and thermal stability compared with the blank epoxy resin. This convenient method provides a new way for the preparation of aramid reinforced composite materials.
Bottom-Up Strategy Toward Heterocyclic Aramid Nanofibers and Their Application in Strengthening Poly(p-phenylene Benzodioxazole) Paper Via Constructing a Bilayer Asymmetric Structure

Abstract:Polymer nanofibers have shone brilliantly in preparation of functional materials by hierarchical self-assembly. Exploring a facile and efficient method to develop high-performance nanofibers is urgently needed but extremely challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy for the preparation of heterocyclic aramid nanofibers (HANFs) by hydrogen bonding and shear field-induced self-assembly. This innovative approach dramatically reduces the preparation time of nanofibers from 2 weeks to 1 h. Moreover, due to the introduction of benzimidazole heterocycles that increase the hydrogen bond density, HANFs exhibit excellent paper-forming properties, such as ultrahigh strength (269.6 MPa), modulus (10.9 GPa), and heat resistance (515.6 degrees C) and therefore show extraordinary potential for enhancing poly(p-phenylene benzodioxazole) (PBO) paper. Excitingly, the bilayer asymmetric PBO/HANF composite paper constructed here demonstrates tremendously improved performance due to the unique interfacial interlocking. This work is believed to provide guidance for the design and manufacture of high-performance nanofibers and specialty insulating paper.
