Abstract:Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) fibers with hierarchically porous structure were successfully prepared by electrospinning at 200 °C combined with thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are typical diluents for iPP in TIPS and are used as solvents for electrospinning. An ionic liquid was added to increase the solution conductivity, facilitate the electrospinning process, and maintain a stable cone-jet electrospinning mode. Theoretical calculation demonstrates that the jet cools rapidly, and phase separation takes place in the jet during its travelling path, as the system traverses across the phase diagram from the single phase region to the metastable region. For the iPP/DOP system, the surface morphology of fibers changes from aligned microvoids bridged by fibrils to a wrinkled structure with the addition of ionic liquid, as the ionic liquid inhibits iPP crystallization. The pore morphology can also be modulated by varying co-diluent composition. Open pores appear on the fiber surface and the cross-section varies from closed cellular pores to a bi-continuous structure with the increase of DBP content in the co-diluent, which clearly demonstrates the phase separation mechanism changes from solid–liquid to liquid–liquid phase separation. The as-spun porous fibers show more than a 100-fold increase in specific surface area compared with the non-porous ones. The main advantages of this method are the pore formation process has a precise mechanism and the pore morphology is well correlated with the phase diagram. Furthermore, it is readily extended to other polymers with TIPS. Highly porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibers can be easily prepared from PVDF/DBP solution with a 157-fold increase in specific surface area.

Abstract:A novel entry toward poly( 2,6-diimidazo(4,5-b: 4’,5’-e)pyridinylene-1,4(2,5-dihydroxy)-phenylene) (PIPD) has been elaborated. A strategy based on a new route to monomers: a sequential nitration of 2,6-diaminopyridine with KNO3/H2SO4 gives 2,6- diamino- 3,5-dinitro pyridine (DNDAP) in moderate yield and its hydrogenation with Raney nickel as catalyst leads to 2,3,5,6-tetraaminopyridine (TAP) in high yield. The second monomer 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DHTA) was synthesized in high yield as product of sulfur-mediated aromatization of dimethyl succinoyl succinate with subsequent base hydrolysis. PIPD was synthesized by step-by-step heating in polyphosphoric acid with molecular weights of 19 ‐ 25 kilodaltons. The macromolecule of PIPD can be seen as lap-join chain form nano-sized rigid fragment. The as-polymerized liquid crystalline PIPD solution was used for fiber spinning. The tensile strength of PIPD fibers were 1.28 ‐ 1.99 GPa and depended on the molecular weight of the polymer used for spinning.

Abstract:Aromatic polyimides (PIs) are high-performance polymers with rigid heterocyclic imide rings and aromatic benzene rings in their macromolecular backbones. Owing to excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability, as well as readily adjustable molecular structures, PIs have been widely adopted for many applications related to electronics, aerospace, automobile, and other industries. In recent years, PI fibers prepared by electrospinning of polyamic acid (PAA) precursor nanofibers followed by imidization (commonly known as electrospun PI nanofibers) have attracted growing interests. Herein, the preparation, evaluation, and application of electrospun PI nanofibers are reviewed. PI polymers and the electrospinning technique are introduced first followed by the preparation of electrospun nanofibers of homo-PI, co-PI, blend-PI, and PI composite. Subsequently, the mechanical and thermal properties of electrospun PI nanofibers are presented; in particular, the mechanical properties of individual electrospun PI nanofibers are highlighted. Thereafter, various applications of electrospun PI nanofibers are outlined, including reinforcement of composites, Li-ion battery separators, fuel cell proton exchange membranes, sensors, microelectronics, high-temperature filtration media, super-hydrophobic PI nanofibers, and PI-based carbon nanofibers. In the final section of conclusions and perspectives, future research endeavors and high-value applications of electrospun PI nanofibers are discussed.

Novel Porphyrinated Polyimide Nanofibers by Electrospinning

Abstract:A series of copolymers based on diaminotetraphenylporphyrin (DATPP), oxidianiline (ODA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) were synthesized. The resulting copoly(amic acid)s (CPAAs) were electrospun into uniform nanofibers. Subsequently, copolyimide (CPI) nanofibers were obtained from the CPAA nanofibers by thermal imidization. The morphologies and luminescence of these nanofibers were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). It was found from the'CLSM analyses that fluorescence quenching took place after the nanofibers were imidized. This could be attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer from excited porphyrin units to diimide acceptor groups. Thermogravimetric JG) analyses indicated the CPI nanofibers possessed excellent thermal stability. This kind of CPI nanofibers with high temperature resistance and unique photoelectric properties could be potential materials for optical switches, catalysis, nonlinear optics, and molecular wires used in normal and especially in high temperature circumstances.

Abstract:This paper reviews three preparation methods for poly(p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofibers (PNFs), aiming to offer theoretical guidance for the development and processing of PNFs. It also elaborates on the applications of PNFs in flame‐retardant/thermal insulation materials, thermal conductive materials, and electrical insulation materials. Finally, this paper discusses the potential challenges and future prospects for PNFs. Polymer nanofibers exhibit unique nanoscale effects, high specific strength and modulus, exceptional design flexibility, large aspect ratios, and substantial specific surface areas. These characteristics have drawn significant attention in emerging fields such as flexible electronics, 5G communications, and new energy vehicles. Notably, poly(p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofibers (PNFs) present the best thermal stability and flame retardancy among all known polymer nanofibers. Furthermore, due to the highly oriented molecular chains and orderly structure, PNFs demonstrate superior thermal conductivity compared to conventional polymer nanofibers, thus garnering significant attention and favor from researchers. This paper summarizes the latest research progress of PNFs, detailing three preparation methods (electrospinning, mechanical dissociation, and protonation) along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. It also elucidates the current development status of PNFs in applications such as flame retardancy, thermal conduction, electrical insulation, electromagnetic shielding, and battery separators, and discusses the challenges and prospects faced by PNFs. This paper aims to provide theoretical guidance for the preparation and application of PNFs, enhancing their potential in advanced applications, and further expanding their application scope.
Improving the Mechanical Properties, UV and Hydrothermal Aging Resistance of PIPD Fiber Using MXene (ti3c2(oh)(2)) Nanosheets

Abstract:The pursuit of improving the performance of rigid-rod polymeric fibers using a new inorganic nano-materials and efficient methods is very attractive topic. The combination of the unusual properties of both materials could definitely produce an outstanding final product. Herein, we proposed a simple grafting method of a graphene-like titanium carbides Ti3C2 (OH) (2) nanosheets (MXene) onto PIPD surface via covalent bond by using (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as a bridging agent. The surface morphology and element compositions of PIPD fiber before and after grafting were characterized, and the effect of such treatment on the mechanical properties was also evaluated. The IFSS of the PIPD-Ti3C2(OH)(2) was highly increased by 61.54% because of the significant improvement the fiber/epoxy interaction and surface wettability. Though the tensile strength (TS) was slightly decreased by only 5%. Furthermore, the experiment results showed a great enhancement of UV and hydrothermal aging resistance of the grafted fibers comparing with untreated ones by 33% and 25% respectively.
Preparation of bead-free pmda-oda polyimide nanofiber fabrics from electro-spinning

Abstract:Abstract： Polyimide uniform fibers with diameters below 100 nm are desired for many applications. A method to prepare bead-free ultrafine polyimide fibers by electro-spinning is present in this paper. Effects of the surface tension and electrical conductivity of the polymer solutions on fiber morphology were investigated. Increasing the conductivity by adding organic salt of CTAB favored thinner beads and decrease of the percentage of beads volume. The fiber diameters dropped slightly when about 10 wt% of THF was added in the solution, whereas the diameters increased obviously when more THF was added. The addition of 10 wt% of THF apparently enhanced the effect of CTAB to form thinner beads and uniform fibers. Bead-free PMDA-ODA polyimide uniform fibers with diameters of 61±15nm were prepared successfully.
Preparation of Nano-fluorescent Polyimide Fibers by Electrospinning

Abstract:Today, many photosensitive polyimide (PI) materials are studied for their excellent thermo mechanical, low dielectric constants and high dissipation factors. Hence, two hemicyanine dyes, named DHEASP Br-C4, and DHEASP Br-C8, were synthesized in this paper and were incorporated by doping with polyamic acid (PAA) in N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) solution to obtain fluorescent PI nanofibers. Firstly, PAA nanofibers were achieved using electrospinning process (ESP) at room temperature. 4 hours later, polyimide (PI) nanofibers were successfully obtained by thermal imidization in vacuum oven while the temperature was 200°C and vacuum degree was 133 Pa. Results show that one-photon emission fluorescence peaks of two hemicyanine dyes in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution was located at 606 nm and 613 nm respectively, while all mats that consisted of those PPA nanofibers, or PI nanofibers showed good fluorescent properties and their one-photon emission fluorescence spectra were located around 600 nm. Hence, nanofluorescent PI fibers can be prepared by electrospinning technique.

Abstract:The third comonomer 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) is incorporated into the PIPD molecular structure,and the PIPD-ODA composite fiber is successfully prepared.Compared with PIPD fibers,PIPD-ODA composite fiber has excellent mechanical properties.The PIPD-ODA composite fiber is characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD).The PIPD-ODA composite fiber'microstructure is analyzed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM).The result shows that the tensile strength and tensile modulus of PIPD-ODA (2.0％) fibers increases by 23.3％ and 27.6％ respectively compared with that of the PIPD fibers.
Electrically Conductive Polyaniline/Polyimide Nanofiber Membranes Prepared via a Combination of Electrospinning and Subsequent In situ Polymerization Growth

Abstract:Highly aligned polyimide (PI) nanofiber membranes have been prepared by electrospinning equipped with a high speed rotating collector. As the electrospun polyimide nanofiber membranes possess large surface area, they can be used as the template for in situ growth of polyaniline (PANi) by using FeCl₃ as the oxidant. It is found that PANi nanoparticles can be uniformly distributed on the surface of highly aligned PI nanofibers due to the low oxidization/reduction potential of FeCl₃ and the active nucleation sites of the functionalized PI nanofibers. The as-prepared PANi/PI composite membranes not only possess excellent thermal and mechanical properties but also show good electrical conductivity, pH sensitivity and significantly improved electromagnetic impedance properties. This is a facile method for fabricating high-performance and multifunctional composites that can find potential applications in electrical and aerospace fields.

Abstract:The mechanical and thermal properties of poly{2,6-diimidazo[4,5-b:4′5′-e] pyridinylene-1,4(2,5-dihydroxy) phenylene} (PIPD)-3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) fibers were analyzed. Compared to other types of benzimidazole fiber structures and properties, PIPD-DAB is distinguished by a unique combination of strength, tensile modulus, and thermal properties. The PIPD polymer was prepared from 2,3,5,6-tetra-aminopyridine (TAP) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHTA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). In order to enhance the tensile strength and modulus, a third comonomer, 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB), was incorporated into the PIPD molecular structure. The change in molecular structure was recorded using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Compared to the PIPD fibers (average tensile strength of PIPD is 3.9 GPa, average tensile modulus of PIPD is 287 GPa), the tensile strength and modulus of PIPD-DAB increased to 4.2 and 318 GPa, respectively. In addition, the thermal decomposition temperature of the PIPD fibers is enhanced by 35 °C, due to the incorporated DAB. PIPD-DAB is a promising material for use under high tensile loads and/or high temperatures.

Abstract:Polyimides (PIs) are a class of representative high-performance engineering plastics possessing the cyclic imide and aromatic groups. Aromatic polyimides have been extensively investigated due to their excellent thermal stability, mechanical properties, along with their good chemical resistance and dielectric properties. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used in many fields such as electrodes, nanometer electron device, and composites etc, as CNTs are considered as the ideal reinforcing nanofillers owing to low density, high aspect ratio, high stiffness, and extremely high strength. With the development of the electrospinning technology, PI nanocomposites containing CNTs have received more significant attention. However, only a few studies have described the conductive mechanism and mechanical properties of PI/CNTs nanocomposites by electrospinning. In this paper, in order to improve the interfacial interaction and compatibility between the MWNTs and the matrix, pristine MWNTs were firstly treated with concentrated HNO3 to obtain the acid-functionalized MWNTs, and then the electrospinning solutions are prepared via in-situ polymerization. At last, PI nanofibers and the nanofiber composites with MWNTs were fabricated by electrospinning. The controllable structure such as parallel fiber is formed. The dispersion and alignment morphologies of MWNTs in the electrospun nanofibers, as well as the thermal and mechanical properties of the nanofiber composites, were studied in detail. The relationship between structure and electrical properties of the nanofiber composites are also studied. To sum up, such a homogeneity approach to fabricate high-performance PI/CNTs nanofiber films is a good attempt toward utilizing CNTs in polymer matrices to achieve excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties in practical use.
Characterization of ODPA-ODA polyimide non-woven membranes prepared by electrospinning

Abstract:In this study, a straightforward and cost-effective method for making non-woven membranes of polyimide using as insulation materials was described. Poly (amic acid) (PAA), a precursor of polyimide, was synthesized from 4, 4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 4, 4'-oxydianiline (ODA) at room temperature for about 4h. ODPA-ODA polyimide (PI) non-woven membranes were prepared by electrospinning the PAA solution followed by thermal imidization. The surface morphology, crystallinity of PAA and ODPA-ODA PI were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. The mechanical properties of ODPA-ODA PI membranes were performed using Electron Universal Testing Machine. The result indicated that the diameter of fibers of ODPA-ODA PI obtained after imidization at 300 degrees C could decrease in size by 500mn and exhibited shrunken, twisted and ribbon-shaped structure.
Fabrication of high performance polyimide fibers by dry-jet wet spinning technology

Abstract:High Performance Polymers, Ahead of Print. High-performance co-polyimide (co-PI) fibers derived from 3,3`4,4`-biphenyldianhydride (BPDA), p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) and 2-(4-aminophenyl)-5-amino-benzimidazole (BIA) were prepared via the wet spinning and dry-jet wet spinning method, respectively. The distinctions between wet spinning and dry-jet wet spinning processes on the structures and properties of co-PI fibers were systematically investigated. The co-PI fibers prepared by dry-jet wet spinning exhibited smoother surface morphology and higher mechanical properties than those of co-PI prepared by wet spinning. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) results showed that the co-PI fibers prepared by dry-jet wet spinning exhibited highly oriented structure along the fiber direction along with a low degree of lateral packing order in the transverse direction. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed that the radius, length, misorientation and internal surface roughness of the microvoids in the co-PI fibers prepared by the dry-jet wet spinning are lower than those in co-PI fibers prepared by wet spinning. Moreover, the effect of air layer height, as well as the heat treatment on the structure and properties of fibers during the dry-jet wet spinning process, was also studied. The tensile strength and modulus of co-PI fibers prepared by dry-jet wet spinning reached 2.72 GPa and 114.29 GPa, respectively, with an air layer height of 10 mm and a heat stretching temperature of 440°C.

Abstract:Polyimide (PI) nanofiber membranes were successfully prepared from a PI/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution via electrospinning. This technique simply and facilely produced efficient high-performance PI fibers. The morphology, surface wettability, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and filtration performance of the as-prepared PI nanofiber membranes were characterized in detail. The membranes exhibited smooth and hydrophobic surfaces. The nanofibers were well distributed in the membranes with fiber diameters in the range of 140–400 nm. All the PI nanofiber membranes showed excellent thermostability, and their initial decomposition temperature ( T d ) and heat resistance temperature ( T HRI ) exceeded 544.4°C and 198.8°C, respectively. The PI nanofiber membranes also possessed reasonable mechanical properties with a tensile strength and a Young’s modulus reaching 10.5 and 927.6 MPa, respectively. Regarding the filtration performance, the developed nanofiber membranes achieved the best filtration efficiency of 90.4%. Such electrospun PI nanofiber membranes can be a promising candidate for hot gas filtration.

Abstract:Electrically conductive polyaniline (PANI)/polyimide (PI) composite fabric was prepared by in situ polymerized aniline on PI fabric in the acid solution using ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. PANI nanoflowers and nanofibers was obtained on the surface of PI fabric by controlling the molar ratio of aniline/oxidant and the acidity of the polymerization solution. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) results demonstrated that a continuous PANI nanofiber network with an average fiber diameter of 80–100 nm was successfully constructed on PI fabric when the doping acid was HNO3, the aniline to oxidant molar ratio was 4:5, and the pH value was 2.32. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the PANI nanofibers was combined on PI fabric through hydrogen bonding. The conductivity of the composite fabric was 0.53 S/m, the contact angle of the composite fabric was increased from 50.6° to 84.7° due to the uniform nanofiber network structure, and the decomposition temperature (Td) of the composite fabrics was beyond 580.0 °C. Remarkably, the prepared PANI/PI composite fabric exhibited excellent electromagnetic wave absorption features (reflection loss of −57.99 dB), which implied it could be a good candidate for the electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Abstract:In this study, polyimide (PI) and polysulfonamide (PSA) were used as base materials, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to successfully prepare PI/PSA/PEG nanofiber membranes through electrospinning technology. Subsequently, water etching was performed on the membranes, utilizing the water solubility of PEG to form the rough wrinkled structure, further enhancing the surface hydrophobicity. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of a spinning voltage of 10 kV, PI/PSA mass fraction of 15 wt.%, and PEG-to-PI/PSA mass ratio of 1/3, the obtained fiber membranes exhibit a uniform morphology (an average diameter of 0.73 μm) and excellent hydrophobicity (the initial water contact angle (WCA) reaching 130.4°). After PEG water etching, the surface of the PI/PSA/PEG hydrophobic membranes formed the rough wrinkled structure, which not only improved their mechanical properties but also further enhanced their hydrophobicity (the initial WCA increasing to 137.9°). Hence, fiber membranes are expected to have broad application prospects in fields such as waterproofing and moisture permeability.

Surface Modification of PIPD Fiber Using Nitric Acid Treatment

Abstract:The poly-pyridobisimidazole (PIPD) is a new rigid rod polymeric fiber, which has an exceptional compression strength that permits it to be an alternative to many other fibers. However, its inert surface and smoothness prevents its functional performance. In this work, an effective acid treatment using nitric acid in different conditions was applied on the PIPD fiber to improve its surface properties. A several measurements were carried out to quantify the effect of this treatment on the mechanical and surficial properties. The experimental results of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detected the generation of oxygen polar groups on the surface of the treated fiber. Consequently, the interface shear strength (IFSS) increases by 25%. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) also showed the increase of surface roughness on the fiber after the nitric acid treatment, and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) supports this observation. Actually, the roughness of the fiber (Ra) was increased from 88.7nm to 225nm. This major improvement affects the surface tension (ST), it was increased by 40% and the surface wettability was considerably improved.

Abstract:The effect of growing CuO nanowires decorated with Ag nanoparticle in the presence of poly(dopamine) (PDA) as intermediate agent on PIPD fiber surface was evaluated. This treatment exhibited significant enhancement of the interfacial and mechanical performance, along with increment of the antimicrobial activity against E. coli as a model for Gram-negative bacteria. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) validates the growth of CuO NWs and Ag NPs on the surface of PIPD fiber. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the ratio of weight loss analyses supported the above results. The interface shear strength (IFSS) between the PIPD fiber and epoxy resin was improved by 72%; and the coated Ag nanoparticles raised the fiber tensile strength (TS) by 13%. The influence of UV radiation and hydrothermal degradation on PIPD fiber was studied, and the UV and hydrothermal aging resistance were both increased by 15% and 22% respectively. The antimicrobial activity analysis results strong efficiency of the coated PIPD fibers by Ag NPs against gram negative bacteria E. coli.

Abstract:The Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) / Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) ultrafine blend fibers have been prepared for the first time by electrospinning.Trichloromethane was found to be the co-solvent for electrospinning.The PVP/PLLA blend solutions in various ratios were studied for electrospinning into ultrafine fibers.The morphology of the fibers was shown by scanning electron microscope (SEM).It was found that the morphology of the fibers became finer with the content of PLLA increasing.To show the molecular interactions, PVP/PLLA fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).The spun ultrafine fibers are expected to be used in the native extracellular matrix for tissue engineering.
