Abstract:C6 hexenols are one of the most significant groups of volatile organic compounds with biogenic emissions. The lack of corresponding kinetic parameters and product information on their oxidation reactions will result in incomplete atmospheric chemical mechanisms and models. In this paper, experimental and theoretical studies are reported for the reactions of OH radicals with a series of C6 hexenols, (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-4-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, (E)-3-hexen-1-ol, and (E)-4-hexen-1-ol, at 298 K and 1.01 × 10(5) Pa. The corresponding rate constants were 8.53 ± 1.36, 10.1 ± 1.6, 7.86 ± 1.30, 8.08 ± 1.33, 9.10 ± 1.50, and 7.14 ± 1.20 (in units of 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)), respectively, measured by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID), using a relative technique. Theoretical calculations concerning the OH-addition and H-abstraction reaction channels were also performed for these reactions to further understand the reaction mechanism and the relative importance of the H-abstraction reaction. By contrast to previously reported results, the H-abstraction channel is a non-negligible reaction channel for reactions of OH radicals with these hexenols. The rate constants of the H-abstraction channel are comparable with those for the OH-addition channel and contribute >20% for most of the studied alcohols, even >50% for (E)-3-hexen-1-ol. Thus, H-abstraction channels may have an important role in the reactions of these alcohols with OH radicals and must be considered in certain atmospheric chemical mechanisms and models.

Abstract:Eugenol is a representative methoxyphenol derived from the pyrolysis of lignin containing a branched alkene group. Its concentration in the atmosphere is equivalent to guaiacol and syringol. In this present paper, the gas phase reaction mechanisms and kinetic parameters of eugenol with hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone molecules (O3) were calculated at the M06-2X/6-311+G(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level. There are two distinct reaction types between eugenol and OH. In particular, Path2 is most favorable in the OH additions, whereas IM16 is most advantageous in H atom abstraction pathways. OH additions have more advantages than H abstraction reactions. Thus, the comprehensive and detailed reaction schemes for the further reactions of IM2 were presented. The main products generated by IM2 are methyl (Z)-3-(2-formylpenta-1,4-dien-1-yl)-2-hydroxyoxirane-2-carboxylate (P2B-4), 2-methoxy-2-oxoacetic acid (P2B-10), 2-allylmalealdehyde (P2B-11) and other carbonyl or carboxyl compounds. As for the reaction of eugenol with O3, the cycloaddition reactions and subsequent oxidative degradation processes were also explored, which yielded the most dominant product 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) acetaldehyde (P8-1). The reaction constants of the primary reactions for eugenol with OH and O3 under the temperature range of 225~375 K were successively calculated by POLYRATE and MESMER program. At 298 K and 1 atm, the respective rate coefficients are 5.91 × 10-11 and 5.48 × 10-16 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and the corresponding atmospheric lifetimes are 4.70 h and 0.72 h. The short lifetimes suggest that once eugenol enters the atmosphere, it is likely to be rapidly degraded. This work aims to provide theoretical guidance for the photochemical reaction mechanisms of eugenol with OH and O3, and present a reference for more experimental researches.

Abstract:Ozonolysis of unsaturated ketones is a common atmospheric chemical process that plays a significant role in controlling the atmospheric budget of OH and O3, organic acids, and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). In this work, the detailed reaction mechanism and rate coefficients for the reactions of O3 with two unsaturated ketones, 3-methyl-3-buten-2-one (MBO332) and 3-methyl-3-penten-2-one (MPO332), were investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory. The results indicate that the major products are butanedione and formaldehyde for MBO332, and butanedione and acetaldehyde for MPO332. Possible reaction mechanism and thermodynamic parameters of some complex stable Criegee intermediates (SCIs) RR'COO were also be investigated in this study. Some organic peroxides can be regarded as the main products for the further reactions of SCIs. The rate constants calculated with O3 are 2.59 × 10-16 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and 2.28 × 10-16 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for MBO332 and MPO332 at 298 K and 1 atm. The total rate constant is negatively correlated with temperature (200-400 K) and positively correlated with pressure. The atmospheric half-lives of MBO332 and MPO332 based on O3 are estimated.

Abstract:Methoxybenzene (MB), is seen as a potential air pollutant which may cause environmental issues in the troposphere. Nevertheless, our understanding of its gas phase reaction is extraordinarily limited. In this study, the quantum chemical methods [M06-2X/aug-cc-pVDZ//M06-2X/6-31+g(d,p)] and Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) theory are utilized in investigating the detailed mechanisms and rate constants for the ozonolysis of MB for the first time. The results show that O3-addition to the methoxy-substituted carbon dominates the entrance channel of MB with ozone and the total rate coefficient of the title reactions is calculated to be 2.67 × 10−21 cm3 per molecule per s at 298 K and 1 atm. The bimolecular rate constants show positive dependence on temperature (200–400 K) and negative dependence on pressure (10−3, 10−2, 10−1 and 1 atm). Moreover, the atmospheric lifetime of MB determined by O3 is available concerning the typical concentration of O3. This work aims to provide reference data for future experimental research on MB.

Abstract:The reaction kinetics of alkenes + hydroperoxyl (H<(O) over dot>(2)) system is of importance to low/intermediate temperature chemistry of alkanes. This work is a follow up of our previous study on 3-hexene + <(O) over dot>H [1],. The rate coefficients were determined using the canonical variational transition-state theory. Results revealed that the asymmetric geometry of the H<(O) over dot>(2) radical generated numerous reaction sub-channels. The rate coefficients, with a conservative uncertainty (factor of 5), were obtained to develop the detailed chemical mechanism of 3-hexene. Additionally, potential energy surface, minimum reaction path, adiabatic ground-state energy, and activation free Gibbs energy change (Delta G) calculations were also performed.

Abstract:Unsaturated alcohols and ketones are a category of oxygenated biogenic volatile organic compounds, which reacted with tropospheric ozone and then made a significant contribution to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, the chemical pathways of their reaction with O-3 are poorly understood. Hence, the reactions of O-3 with three unsaturated alcohols and ketones were conducted in 100 L FEP Teflon smog chamber and the rate constants were obtained by using the absolute rate method. The rate constant of 4-methyl-3-penten2-one, 2-methyl-4-penten-2-ol, 4-penten-2-ol reacting with O-3 at 298 K and 760 Torr was (7.68 +/- 0.80) x 10(-18), (4.27 +/- 0.44) x 10(-18) and (5.40 +/- 0.57) x 10(-18) cm(3)molecule(-1)s(-1), respectively. Combining with theoretical calculation, the factors leading to the different rate constants of a series of similar structure compounds were analyzed, including the steric effect of methyl in specific position and the electron withdrawing effect of hydroxyl group in the gamma position for alcohols and carbonyl group in the beta position for ketones. Moreover, the major products of three unsaturated organics reacted with ozone were detected, and the reaction mechanisms were deduced by further supporting of theoretical calculation. The atmospheric lifetime of the target compounds and the environmental significant were explored.

Abstract:Reaction rate constants and products of 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one with ozone were studied in a 100-L fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film bag using absolute rate method at 298 ± 1 K and atmospheric pressure. The rate constants were (1.09 ± 0.12) × 10-17, (3.48 ± 0.36) × 10-17 and (5.70 ± 0.60) × 10-17 cm3/(molecule⋅sec), respectively. According to the obtained rate constants, the effects of carbonyl were discussed. The carbonyl group in β position has a net withdrawing effect with respect to an olefinic bond, then causing the decline of rate constants. The quantum chemical calculation was used to explain the results of rate constants. The products of ozonolysis were mainly aldehydes, which have significant influence on the formation of SOA, and hence play an important role in the atmosphere. In this work, we detected the main products of reaction and proposed the reaction mechanism by combining the results of quantum chemical calculations. Atmospheric lifetime for three unsaturated ketones reacted with ozone was 36.4, 11.4 and 6.9 hr for 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one, respectively.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism for o-xylene with OH radical and 0, was studied by density functional theory (DFT) method. The geometries of the reactants, intermediates, transition states, and products were optimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The corresponding vibration frequencies were calculated at the same level. The single-point calculations for all the stationary points were carried out at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,2pd) level using the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) optimized geometries. Reaction energies for the formation of the aromatic intermediate radicals have been obtained to determine their relative stability and reversibility, and their activation barriers have been analyzed to assess the energetically favorable pathways to propagate the o-xylene oxidation. The results of the theoretical study indicate that OH addition to o-xylene forms ipso, meta, and para isomers of o-xylene-OH adducts, and the ipso o-xylene adduct is the most stable among these isomers. Oxygen is expected to add to the oxylene-OH adducts forming o-xylene peroxy radicals. And subsequent ring closure of the peroxyl radicals to form bicyclic radicals. With relatively low barriers, isomerization of the o-xylene bicyclic radicals to more stable epoxide radicals likely occurs, competing with O-2 addition to form bicyclic peroxy radicals. The study provides thermochemical data for assessment of the photochemical production potential of ozone and formation of toxic products and secondary organic aerosol from o-xylene photooxidation. Photocatalytic degradation of trace hexane in the gas phase with and without ozone addition: kinetic study

Abstract:The degradations of trace hexane in the gas phase by O3/UV, TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV were studied. The effects of the flow rate, inlet concentration of hexane, water vapor concentration and ozone dosage on the conversion of hexane in the three processes were investigated, respectively. The experimental results showed that the addition of ozone significantly increase photocatalytic degradation of hexane. The reaction rates of hexane by O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV increased linearly with an increase of ozone addition, which increased faster in O3/UV than in O3/TiO2/UV. L–H bimolecular model was successfully used to correlate photocatalytic reaction rate data under various hexane and water vapor concentrations. A new model combining L–H model and ozone photolysis was developed to correlate reaction rate data of hexane in O3/TiO2/UV.

Abstract:The degradations of trace hexane under high flow rate (5 L/min-17 L/min) in the gas phase by TiO2/UV, O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV were studied. The kinetic effects of the inlet concentration of hexane, flow rate, water concentration and ozone dosage on the conversion of hexane in the three processes were examined respectively. The experimental results showed that the addition of ozone to the photocatalysis process increased the conversion of hexane significantly. The O3/TiO2/UV process was more efficient than the TiO2/UV in decomposing hexane. The degradation rate increased with increasing the initial concentration of hexane in the processes of TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV. They matched well with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic model. In the range of flow rate studied, the degradation rate increased with an increasing flow rate in both processes of TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV, while was not affected in the process of O3/UV. The degradation rate in the three processes was affected by water concentration. The degradation rate of the two processes O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV increased almost linearly with the increase of ozone dosage.

Abstract:The gas-phase reactions of unsaturated alcohols with O-3 were investigated in FEP Teflon film chamber at 298 K and 760 torr of atmosphere pressure. The rate constants of the reactions of C6-C8 alkenols with O-3 were determined using both the absolute and the relative rate method, and the measured values were (5.96 +/- 0.35) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (5.12 +/- 0.30) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol, and (5.66 +/- 0.52) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, respectively. The gas-phase products of these reactions mentioned above were detected using proton-transfer reaction mass spectrum (PTR-MS). HOCH2CH2CHO, CH2CH2CHO, HCHO and CH3CHO were identified as the main gas products for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. HOCH2CH2CHO and CH3(CH2)(2)CHO dominated the gaseous products for (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol. And for (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, CH3(CH2)(3)CHO, CH3(CH2)(2)CHO and HOCH2CH2CHO were the main gaseous products. The SOA yields were monitored at the same time, which were 0.184 +/- 0.013, 0.213 +/- 0.017, 0.232 +/- 0.021 for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol and (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, respectively. The possible reaction mechanisms were proposed and discussed. The kinetic data presented here has been used to estimate their atmosphere lifetimes and the reaction reactivity. Abstract:Reaction mechanism and kinetics of the reaction of HO2 and i-C3H7O2 radicals were investigated at CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. The reaction pathways on both singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces have been explored. The triplet hydrogen abstraction is found to be highly favored over the singlet hydrogen abstraction and addition-elimination pathways, and the latters can be negligible in atmospheric conditions. The multiconformer transition state theory was employed to obtain the rate coefficients. The calculated rate coefficients over the studied temperature were used to fit the data, and the Arrhenius expression was obtained to be k= 1.65×10-15T3002.31exp2265T cm3 molecule−1 s−1.

Abstract:Methoxyphenols, which are emitted through biomass burning, are an important species in atmospheric chemistry. In the present study, temperature-dependent aqueous-phase OH radical reactions of six methoxyphenols and two related phenols have been investigated through laser flash photolysis and the density functional theory. The rate constants obtained were in a range of (1.1-1.9) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 with k(3-MC) > k(Cre) ≈ k(Syr) ≈ k(MEP) > k(Res) > k(3-MP) > k(2-EP) ≈ k(2-MP). We derived the parameters of these reactions from the obtained T-dependent rate constants and found a mean Arrhenius activation energy of 16.9 kJ mol-1. The diffusion rate constants were calculated for each case and compared to the measured ones. Generally, the rate constants are found to be close to fully diffusion-controlled (kdiff = (1.4-1.5) × 1010 L mol-1 s-1 for all reactions). A structure-function relationship was established through the measurement result, which could be used for predicting unknown rate constants of other phenolic compounds. All of these findings are expected to enhance the predictive capabilities of models, such as the chemical aqueous-phase radical mechanism.

Abstract:This paper aimed at providing new insights into the mechanisms of ozone reactions with a selection of organic compounds, where C–H bonds were single available attack spots (1-propanol, tertiary -butanol, formate and formic acid). The involved method was based on the density functional theory (DFT). The calculations considered reactions occurring in a polar solvent, water (ɛ r = 80), and a nonpolar one, cyclohexane (ɛ r = 2.02). For all cases, the reaction was triggered by extraction of a hydrogen atom from the active C–H bond by ozone leading to a pair of radicals. Following this reaction, three situations occurred. Diffusion of the radicals from the solvent cage resulting in two free radicals meant H-abstraction. A fast electron transfer between the two radicals within the solvent cage resulting in the corresponding ions pair indicated pseudo hydride transfer. The recombination of the radicals within the solvent cage leading to an organic hydrotrioxide denoted pseudo insertion. In water, the systems might follow all pathways. In cyclohexane, the reaction might occur generally only via H-abstraction and pseudo insertion. An exception was the formate/O 3 system, where all pathways might occur.

Abstract:Rate constants for the reactions of ozone with 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol and 1-nonen-4-ol have been determined at 298±1K and atmospheric pressure for the first time. The experiments were performed in a 100-L FEP Teflon film bag using absolute rate method; the rate constants were (1.91±0.19)×10-17, (1.89±0.20)×10-17, and (0.83±0.08)×10-17cm3/(molecule·sec) for 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol, and 1-nonen-4-ol, respectively. The rate constants have been compared with those of unsaturated alcohols structural homologs, and used to estimate the reaction reactivity. The electronegativity of carbon-carbon double bond was calculated by atomic charges analysis. The calculated results show that the electronic effect of the lone pair electrons of hydroxyl oxygen is the main cause of the difference in rate coefficient. According to the obtained rate constants, the atmospheric lifetimes of studied unsaturated alcohols were also estimated, which indicates that the reaction with ozone is an important loss pathway in the atmosphere, especially in polluted areas.
Theoretical Studies on the Kinetics and Mechanisms of Reactions for Methyl Vinyl Ether and Ozone

Abstract:The interconversion between the two distinct isomers of methyl vinyl ether (MVE), the formation of the primary ozonides from O3-initated reactions of MVE, the transformation between the primary ozonides, and the subsequent fragmentation were studied using quantum chemical methods at the BHandHLYP/6311++G(d,p) level of theory for optimized geometries and frequency calculations and at the QCISD/631G(d,p) level for the single point energy calculations. The rate coefficients were calculated for the temperature range 280440 K by using the canonical transition state theory (TST). For ozone addition to MVE, there are two different possibilities discussed on the basis of two different possible orientations for ozone attack. The results of the theoretical study indicate that although the synperiplanar-MVE is 7.11 kJ/mol more stable than the antiperiplanar-MVE, the antiperiplanar-MVE plays a more important role in formation of the primary ozonides because the primary ozonides formed from the ozone addition antiperiplanar-MVE are more stable and the energy barriers corresponding to transition states are lower. The interconversion between the primary ozonides formed from the ozone addition to antiperiplanar-MVE is the most accessible compared with the transformations between other primary ozonides. The cleavage of the primary ozonides mainly leads to the formation of the CH2OO, which is in agreement with the experimental estimates. The calculated overall rate constant for the ozone-initiated reactions is 4.81017cm3/(molecules) at 298.15 K, which agrees with the experimental value for ethyl vinyl ether.

Abstract:H-atom abstraction and addition are the two most important reactions in alkene oxidation. As a complement of our synchronization work of 3-hexene chemistry (Feiyu Yang et al., Kinetics of Hydrogen Abstraction and Addition Reactions of 3-Hexene by OH Radicals, J. Phys. Chem. A 2017, 121, 1877-1889), high accuracy electronic structure calculations (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS) and canonical variational transition state theory are used to predict the rate coefficients of the H-atom abstraction and addition reactions of 3-hexene +CH3/H/O system. Although CH3/H/O are all nonpolar radicals, H + 3-hexene system shows some unique features. Unlike the 3-hexene + CH3/O systems, the potential energy surface of 3-hexene + H system exhibits a unique "negative well" characteristic, suggesting the energy of the well is higher than its corresponding reactant or product. Analysis shows that the "negative well" characteristic is caused by the relative larger zero-point energies of Van der Waals complex of H + 3-hexene system. Moreover, the evolution of adiabatic ground-state energy shows wells/well-like curves at both reactant and product sides for 3-hexene + CH3 and O systems, but only at reactant end for 3-hexene + H system. Vibrational analysis reveals that for 3-hexene + CH3 and O systems, the wells/well-like curves are generated by the C=C double bond stretch motion, while it is generated by the forming H-H single bond stretch motion for 3-hexene + H system. Branching ratio shows that addition and abstraction dominate at low and high temperatures and the critical temperatures are 478 K, 794 K and 735 K for 3-hexene + CH3, H and O systems, respectively. Rate coefficients with a conservative uncertainty of a factor of 5 are estimated based on similar algorithm of Sun and Law. In addition, analyses on the potential energy surface, minimum energy path, adiabatic ground-state energy and activation free Gibbs energy change are also performed in this work.
