Abstract:Rate constants for the reactions of ozone with 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol and 1-nonen-4-ol have been determined at 298±1K and atmospheric pressure for the first time. The experiments were performed in a 100-L FEP Teflon film bag using absolute rate method; the rate constants were (1.91±0.19)×10-17, (1.89±0.20)×10-17, and (0.83±0.08)×10-17cm3/(molecule·sec) for 1-octen-3-ol, 1-nonen-3-ol, and 1-nonen-4-ol, respectively. The rate constants have been compared with those of unsaturated alcohols structural homologs, and used to estimate the reaction reactivity. The electronegativity of carbon-carbon double bond was calculated by atomic charges analysis. The calculated results show that the electronic effect of the lone pair electrons of hydroxyl oxygen is the main cause of the difference in rate coefficient. According to the obtained rate constants, the atmospheric lifetimes of studied unsaturated alcohols were also estimated, which indicates that the reaction with ozone is an important loss pathway in the atmosphere, especially in polluted areas.

Abstract:Reaction rate constants and products of 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one with ozone were studied in a 100-L fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film bag using absolute rate method at 298 ± 1 K and atmospheric pressure. The rate constants were (1.09 ± 0.12) × 10-17, (3.48 ± 0.36) × 10-17 and (5.70 ± 0.60) × 10-17 cm3/(molecule⋅sec), respectively. According to the obtained rate constants, the effects of carbonyl were discussed. The carbonyl group in β position has a net withdrawing effect with respect to an olefinic bond, then causing the decline of rate constants. The quantum chemical calculation was used to explain the results of rate constants. The products of ozonolysis were mainly aldehydes, which have significant influence on the formation of SOA, and hence play an important role in the atmosphere. In this work, we detected the main products of reaction and proposed the reaction mechanism by combining the results of quantum chemical calculations. Atmospheric lifetime for three unsaturated ketones reacted with ozone was 36.4, 11.4 and 6.9 hr for 1-octen-3-one, 3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one, respectively.

Abstract:The present relative kinetic study reports on the experimentally determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients of OH radicals with a series of seven cis-3-hexenyl esters. The experiments were carried out in the environmental simulation chamber made of quartz from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (ESC-Q-UAIC), Romania, at a temperature of (298 ± 2) K and a total air pressure of (1000 ± 10) mbar. In situ long-path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to monitor cis-3-hexenyl formate (Z3HF, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)H), cis-3-hexenyl acetate (Z3HAc, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH3), cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate (Z3HiB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate (Z3H3MeB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate (Z3HH, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)(CH2)4CH3), cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate (Z3HZ3H, (Z,Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH═CHCH2CH3), cis-3-hexenyl benzoate (Z3HBz, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)C6H5), and the reference compounds. The following reaction rate coefficients (in 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) were obtained for the OH radical-initiated gas-phase oxidation of cis-3-hexenyl esters: (4.13 ± 0.45) for Z3HF, (4.19 ± 0.38) for Z3HAc, (4.84 ± 0.39) for Z3HiB, (5.39 ± 0.61) for Z3H3MeB, (7.00 ± 0.56) for Z3HH, (10.58 ± 1.40) for Z3HZ3H, and (3.41 ± 0.28) for Z3HBz. The results are discussed in terms of hexenyl ester reactivity and compared with the available literature data and structure-activity relationship (SAR) estimates. The atmospheric implications based on the average lifetimes of the investigated cis-3-hexenyl esters are discussed in the present study. The gas-phase rate coefficients for OH radical reactions are given herein for the first time for cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate, cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate, cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate, and cis-3-hexenyl benzoate. The newly determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients provide new information for existing kinetic databases and contribute to the further development of SAR methodologies useful for predicting the reactivity of oxygenated volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:Kinetics of the reaction of ozone with propylene under real atmospheric environmental conditions with an ozone concentration of ca 6.6×10−8 has been investigated in a self-made Teflon Chamber. Using Model 49C-O3 Analyzer and GC-FID, reaction rate constants at a temperature range of 282–314 K were determined by an absolute rate technique in terms of measurements of ozone concentrations. Results show that the reaction rate constant is 6.73×10−18 cm3·molecule−1·s−1 for the initial ozone concentration of 6.61×10−8 and the temperature of 282 K. According to the reaction rate constants under different temperatures, the Arrhenius equation of k2=(5.8±1.2)×10−15e(−1907±53)/T is obtained. Compared with the results reported by other researchers, although the rate constants obtained in this study are systematically underestimated and the activation energy of the reaction overestimated, the results are satisfactory. For example, the largest relative error is only 11% and 5% for the rate constant and activation energy, respectively. These demonstrate that the research equipment used in this study is reliable under real atmospheric conditions and can be used to do further studies related to ozone reactions.
An Experimental Kinetic Study and Products Research of the Reactions of O3 with a Series of Unsaturated Alcohols

Abstract:The gas-phase reactions of unsaturated alcohols with O-3 were investigated in FEP Teflon film chamber at 298 K and 760 torr of atmosphere pressure. The rate constants of the reactions of C6-C8 alkenols with O-3 were determined using both the absolute and the relative rate method, and the measured values were (5.96 +/- 0.35) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (5.12 +/- 0.30) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol, and (5.66 +/- 0.52) x 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, respectively. The gas-phase products of these reactions mentioned above were detected using proton-transfer reaction mass spectrum (PTR-MS). HOCH2CH2CHO, CH2CH2CHO, HCHO and CH3CHO were identified as the main gas products for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. HOCH2CH2CHO and CH3(CH2)(2)CHO dominated the gaseous products for (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol. And for (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, CH3(CH2)(3)CHO, CH3(CH2)(2)CHO and HOCH2CH2CHO were the main gaseous products. The SOA yields were monitored at the same time, which were 0.184 +/- 0.013, 0.213 +/- 0.017, 0.232 +/- 0.021 for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol and (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, respectively. The possible reaction mechanisms were proposed and discussed. The kinetic data presented here has been used to estimate their atmosphere lifetimes and the reaction reactivity. Abstract:Unsaturated alcohols and ketones are a category of oxygenated biogenic volatile organic compounds, which reacted with tropospheric ozone and then made a significant contribution to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, the chemical pathways of their reaction with O-3 are poorly understood. Hence, the reactions of O-3 with three unsaturated alcohols and ketones were conducted in 100 L FEP Teflon smog chamber and the rate constants were obtained by using the absolute rate method. The rate constant of 4-methyl-3-penten2-one, 2-methyl-4-penten-2-ol, 4-penten-2-ol reacting with O-3 at 298 K and 760 Torr was (7.68 +/- 0.80) x 10(-18), (4.27 +/- 0.44) x 10(-18) and (5.40 +/- 0.57) x 10(-18) cm(3)molecule(-1)s(-1), respectively. Combining with theoretical calculation, the factors leading to the different rate constants of a series of similar structure compounds were analyzed, including the steric effect of methyl in specific position and the electron withdrawing effect of hydroxyl group in the gamma position for alcohols and carbonyl group in the beta position for ketones. Moreover, the major products of three unsaturated organics reacted with ozone were detected, and the reaction mechanisms were deduced by further supporting of theoretical calculation. The atmospheric lifetime of the target compounds and the environmental significant were explored.

Abstract:Using a relative rate technique, kinetic studies on the gas-phase reactions of OH radicals, ozone, and NO(3) radicals with iso-butyl vinyl ether (iBVE) and tert-butyl vinyl ether (tBVE) have been performed in a 405 L Duran glass chamber at (298 ± 3) K and atmospheric pressure (750 ± 10 Torr) in synthetic air using in situ FTIR spectroscopy to monitor the reactants. The following rate coefficients (in units of cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) have been obtained: (1.08 ± 0.23) × 10(-10) and (1.25 ± 0.32) × 10(-10) for the reactions of OH with iBVE and tBVE, respectively; (2.85 ± 0.62) × 10(-16) and (5.30 ± 1.07) × 10(-16) for the ozonolysis of iBVE and tBVE, respectively; and (1.99 ± 0.56) × 10(-12) and (4.81 ± 1.01) × 10(-12) for the reactions of NO(3) with iBVE and tBVE, respectively. The rate coefficients for the NO(3) reactions are first-time determinations. The measured rate coefficients are compared with estimates using current structure activity relationship (SAR) methods and the effects of the alkoxy group on the gas-phase reactivity of the alkyl vinyl ethers toward the oxidants are compared and discussed. In addition, estimates of the tropospheric lifetimes of iBVE and tBVE with respect to their reactions with OH, ozone, and NO(3) for typical OH radical, ozone, and NO(3) radical concentrations are made, and their relevance for the environmental fate of compounds is considered.

Abstract:Kinetic studies on the gas-phase reactions of OH and NO3 radicals and ozone with ethyl vinyl ether (EVE), propyl vinyl ether (PVE) and butyl vinyl ether (BVE) have been performed in a 405 L borosilicate glass chamber at 298 +/- 3 K in synthetic air using in situ FTIR spectroscopy to monitor the reactants. Using a relative kinetic method rate coefficients (in units of cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) of (7.79 +/- 1.71) x 10(-11), (9.73 +/- 1.94) x 10(-11) and (1.13 +/- 0.31) x 10(-10) have been obtained for the reaction of OH with EVE, PVE and BVE, respectively, (1.40 +/- 0.35) x 10(-12), (1.85 +/- 0.53) x 10(-12) and (2.10 +/- 0.54) x 10(-12) for the reaction of NO3 with EVE, PVE and BVE, respectively, and (2.06 +/- 0.42) x 10(-16), (2.34 +/- 0.48) x 10(-16) and (2.59 +/- 0.52) x 10(-16) for the ozonolysis of EVE, PVE and BVE, respectively. Tropospheric lifetimes of EVE, PVE and BVE with respect to the reactions with reactive tropospheric species (OH, NO3 and O-3) have been estimated for typical OH and NO3 radical and ozone concentrations.

Abstract:Ozone has been widely used to degrade volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in combination with other methods such as ultraviolet light, adsorption, thermal and catalytic incineration. Despite its fundamental importance, the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction between ozone and VOCs are still lacking of detailed investigation. It is well known that quantum chemical calculation is a well-established method for investigating the chemical reactions. In this paper, quantum chemical calculation is employed to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction between ozone and VOCs exemplified bill benzene. The microcosmic reaction process was depicted and discussed in detail based on geometry optimizations made using the UB3LYP/6-31G (d) method. According to the mechanism study, the kinetic parameters were also calculated by the classical transition state theory (TST). The calculated activation energy is 14.90 kcal/mol at the QCISD(t)/6-311g(d,p)//UB3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory, while the obtained Arrhenius expression is that, k=1.05x10(11) exp(-61527/RT) (cm(3).mole(-1).s(-1)). Both the activation energy and the Arrhenius expression are in good agreement with the experimental results, which indicated that the mechanism and kinetic study of the reaction between benzene with ozone by employing quantum chemical calculation was reasonable and reliable.

Abstract:The kinetics of CH$_2$OO reaction with ozone has been studied by monitoring CH$_2$OO with time-resolved infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, which utilized fast chirped IR pulse train from a quantum cascade laser [J. Chem. Phys. 146, 244302 (2017)]. CH$_2$OO was prepared by photolyzing a gas mixture of CH$_2$I$_2$/O$_2$/O$_3$ at 352 nm; the photolysis wavelength was chosen to minimize the photodissociation of O$_3$. The measured rate coefficient at 298 K and 30 Torr is (6.7$\pm$0.5)x10$^{-14}$ cm$^3$sec$^{-1}$, independent of pressure from 30 to 100 Torr. The result indicates that previous ab initio calculations either underestimated or overestimated this reaction rate by one order of magnitude or more. The result also implies that in laboratory studies of ozonolysis of alkenes, the reaction of Criegee intermediate with ozone may play a role. However, this reaction would not compete with other CH$_2$OO sinks in the atmosphere.

Abstract:The kinetics of the catalytic hydrogenation of CCl 4 to chloroform in liquid phase were studied. This reaction allows to reduce the content of ozone-depleting CCl 4 in the atmosphere. A reaction mechanism was proposed. The molecular H 2 was activated on the surface of the catalyst, and the activated hydrogen atom then reacted with CCl 4 in solution and produced chloroform. From this reaction mechanism, a definite kinetic equation could be deduced. The reaction rate coefficient is determined by initial concentration of CCl 4 in the solution, pressure, reaction temperature, and the concentration of active centers. All these factors were studied over Pt-Pd/C catalyst and fit in with the kinetic equation. From the experimental results, the activation energy of the reaction is 86 kJ/mol.
Gas-Phase Ozonolysis of Selected Olefins: the Yield of Stabilized Criegee Intermediate and the Reactivity Toward SO2

Abstract:The gas-phase reaction of ozone with olefins represents an important path for the conversion of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. The current interest is focused on the formation of stabilized Criegee intermediates (sCI) and possible further reactions of sCI. We report results from the ozonolysis of 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene (TME), trans-2-butene and 1-methyl-c-yclohexene (MCH) carried out in an atmospheric pressure flow tube at 293 +/- 0.5 K and RH = 50% using chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometry to detect H2SO4 produced from SO2 oxidation by sCI. The yields of sCI were found to be in good agreement with recently observed data: 0.62 +/- 0.28 (TME), 0.53 +/- 0.24 (trans-2-butene) and 0.16 +/- 0.07 (MCH). The rate coefficients for sCI + SO2 from our experiment, (0.9-7.7) X 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), are within the range of recommendations from indirect determinations as given so far in the literature. Our study helps to assess the importance of sCI in atmospheric chemistry, especially for the oxidation of SO2 to H2SO4.
Photocatalytic degradation of trace hexane in the gas phase with and without ozone addition: kinetic study

Abstract:The degradations of trace hexane in the gas phase by O3/UV, TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV were studied. The effects of the flow rate, inlet concentration of hexane, water vapor concentration and ozone dosage on the conversion of hexane in the three processes were investigated, respectively. The experimental results showed that the addition of ozone significantly increase photocatalytic degradation of hexane. The reaction rates of hexane by O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV increased linearly with an increase of ozone addition, which increased faster in O3/UV than in O3/TiO2/UV. L–H bimolecular model was successfully used to correlate photocatalytic reaction rate data under various hexane and water vapor concentrations. A new model combining L–H model and ozone photolysis was developed to correlate reaction rate data of hexane in O3/TiO2/UV.

Abstract:The degradations of trace hexane under high flow rate (5 L/min-17 L/min) in the gas phase by TiO2/UV, O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV were studied. The kinetic effects of the inlet concentration of hexane, flow rate, water concentration and ozone dosage on the conversion of hexane in the three processes were examined respectively. The experimental results showed that the addition of ozone to the photocatalysis process increased the conversion of hexane significantly. The O3/TiO2/UV process was more efficient than the TiO2/UV in decomposing hexane. The degradation rate increased with increasing the initial concentration of hexane in the processes of TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV. They matched well with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic model. In the range of flow rate studied, the degradation rate increased with an increasing flow rate in both processes of TiO2/UV and O3/TiO2/UV, while was not affected in the process of O3/UV. The degradation rate in the three processes was affected by water concentration. The degradation rate of the two processes O3/UV and O3/TiO2/UV increased almost linearly with the increase of ozone dosage.

Abstract:The reaction of alkenes with ozone has great effect on atmospheric oxidation, its transient species can produce OH radicals and contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). In the present study, the reaction of tetramethylethene (TME) with ozone was investigated using self-assembled low temperature matrix isolation system. The TME and ozone were co-deposited on a salt plate at 15 K, and then slowly warmed up the plate. The first transient species primary ozonide (POZ) was detected, indicating that the reaction followed Criegee mechanism. Then POZ began to decompose at 180 K. However, secondary ozonide (SOZ) was not observed according to Criegee mechanism. Probably, Criegee Intermediate (CI) did not react with inert carbonyl of acetone, but with remaining TME formed tetra-methyl epoxide (EPO).

Abstract:Eugenol is a representative methoxyphenol derived from the pyrolysis of lignin containing a branched alkene group. Its concentration in the atmosphere is equivalent to guaiacol and syringol. In this present paper, the gas phase reaction mechanisms and kinetic parameters of eugenol with hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone molecules (O3) were calculated at the M06-2X/6-311+G(3df,2p)//M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level. There are two distinct reaction types between eugenol and OH. In particular, Path2 is most favorable in the OH additions, whereas IM16 is most advantageous in H atom abstraction pathways. OH additions have more advantages than H abstraction reactions. Thus, the comprehensive and detailed reaction schemes for the further reactions of IM2 were presented. The main products generated by IM2 are methyl (Z)-3-(2-formylpenta-1,4-dien-1-yl)-2-hydroxyoxirane-2-carboxylate (P2B-4), 2-methoxy-2-oxoacetic acid (P2B-10), 2-allylmalealdehyde (P2B-11) and other carbonyl or carboxyl compounds. As for the reaction of eugenol with O3, the cycloaddition reactions and subsequent oxidative degradation processes were also explored, which yielded the most dominant product 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) acetaldehyde (P8-1). The reaction constants of the primary reactions for eugenol with OH and O3 under the temperature range of 225~375 K were successively calculated by POLYRATE and MESMER program. At 298 K and 1 atm, the respective rate coefficients are 5.91 × 10-11 and 5.48 × 10-16 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and the corresponding atmospheric lifetimes are 4.70 h and 0.72 h. The short lifetimes suggest that once eugenol enters the atmosphere, it is likely to be rapidly degraded. This work aims to provide theoretical guidance for the photochemical reaction mechanisms of eugenol with OH and O3, and present a reference for more experimental researches.

Abstract:This paper aimed at providing new insights into the mechanisms of ozone reactions with a selection of organic compounds, where C–H bonds were single available attack spots (1-propanol, tertiary -butanol, formate and formic acid). The involved method was based on the density functional theory (DFT). The calculations considered reactions occurring in a polar solvent, water (ɛ r = 80), and a nonpolar one, cyclohexane (ɛ r = 2.02). For all cases, the reaction was triggered by extraction of a hydrogen atom from the active C–H bond by ozone leading to a pair of radicals. Following this reaction, three situations occurred. Diffusion of the radicals from the solvent cage resulting in two free radicals meant H-abstraction. A fast electron transfer between the two radicals within the solvent cage resulting in the corresponding ions pair indicated pseudo hydride transfer. The recombination of the radicals within the solvent cage leading to an organic hydrotrioxide denoted pseudo insertion. In water, the systems might follow all pathways. In cyclohexane, the reaction might occur generally only via H-abstraction and pseudo insertion. An exception was the formate/O 3 system, where all pathways might occur.

Abstract:To improve the understanding of low temperature oxidation of methyl cyclohexane, the potential energy surfaces for O2 addition to two of its radicals (tcy-C6H10(*)CH3 with a tertiary radical site and ortho-cy-C6H10(*)CH3 with a secondary radical site in the ortho position to the methyl substitution) have been investigated by high level quantum chemical calculations. The reaction kinetics was studied by the ab initio transition state theory based on master equation methodology. The relationship between low temperature oxidation reactivity and molecular structures was explored, typically in terms of the barrier heights of 1,5 H-shift for peroxy radicals. The computed phenomenological rate constants reveal that the ROO stabilization dominates the fates of two methyl cyclohexyl radicals reacting with O2 at pressures higher than 1atm over the studied temperature range. The balance between ROO stabilization, HO2 elimination, QOOH stabilization, and OH formation was further revealed by branching ratios of these four types of reactions. This study extends kinetic data for cyclic alkanes oxidation in a wide range of pressure and temperature.
