Abstract:Experimental study was conducted on the shape change of activate sludge flocs and its effect on mass transport in biological wastewater treatment. A flow chamber with variable cross-section areas was used for flow generation with a velocity gradient. A particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) system was employed to record the shape change of individual bio-flocs through the flow chamber. The PIV results provide a clear evidence of the shape change of bio-flocs in a variable flow. The degree of floc shape change increased as the flow velocity gradient increased. The volume change could reach 18.4% in average for the bio-flocs in the flow with a velocity gradient of 9.4s(-1). Accordingly, the material transport driven by shape change can be up to two orders of magnitude greater than diffusive transport for large bio-flocs. Thus, the importance of shape change to the overall mass transport should not be overlooked for bio-flocs in natural waters and engineered wastewater treatment systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
