Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) has been widely used as an organoarsenic additive in animal feeding operations and poses a risk to the environment. Here, we first report the efficient degradation of ROX by UV/chlorine, where the kinetics, removal of total arsenic (As), and cytotoxicity were investigated. The kinetics study presented that reactive chlorine species (RCS) and HO• were the dominant species to react with ROX. Furthermore, the degradation rate of ROX can reach the maximum value at pH 7.5 due to the formation of more RCS. The degradation of ROX was affected by the amount of chlorine, pH, and water matrix. Through product analysis and Gauss theoretical calculation, two possible ROX degradation pathways were proposed. The free radicals attacked the As-C bond of ROX and resulted in releasing arsenate (As(V)). It was the reason that for an enhancement of the removal of total As by ferrous appeared after UV/chlorine, and over 98% of the total As was removed. In addition, cytotoxicity studies indicated that the cytotoxicity significantly enhanced during the degradation of ROX by UV/chlorine. However, by combination of UV/chlorine and adsorption, cytotoxicity can be greatly eliminated, probably due to the removal of As(V) and chlorinated products. These results further demonstrated that UV/chlorine treatment could be an effective method for the control of the potential environmental risks posed by organoarsenic.

Anaerobic biotransformation of roxarsone regulated by sulfate: Degradation, arsenic accumulation and volatilization

Abstract:Roxarsone, an extensively used organoarsenical feed additive, is often pooled in livestock wastewater. Sulfate exists ubiquitously in livestock wastewater and is capable for arsenic remediation. However, little is known about impacts of sulfate on roxarsone biotransformation during anaerobic digestion of livestock wastewater. In this study, the biodegradation of 5.0 mg L−1 roxarsone, and the accumulation and volatilization of the generated arsenical metabolites in a sulfate-spiked upflow anaerobic granular blanket reactor were investigated. Based on the analysis of degradation products, the nitro and arsenate groups of roxarsone were successively reduced to amino and arsenite groups before the C–As bond cleavage. Effluent arsenic concentration was ∼0.75 mg L−1, of which 82.9–98.5% were organoarsenicals. The maximum arsenic volatilization rate reached 32.6 μg-As kg−1-VS d−1. Adding 5.0 mg L−1 sulfate enabled 66.7% and 45.9% decrease in inorganic arsenic concentration and arsenic volatilization rate, respectively. Arsenic content in the anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) was accumulated to 1250 mg kg−1 within 420 days. Based on the results of FESEM-EDS and XPS, sulfate addition induced arsenic precipitation in the AGS through the formation of orpiment. Arsenic in the effluent, biogas and AGS accounted for 52.9%, 0.01% and 47.1% of the influent arsenic when the reactor operated stably. The findings from this study suggest that sulfate has effectively regulatory effects on arsenic immobilization and volatilization during anaerobic digestion of organoarsenic-contaminated livestock wastewater.

Abstract:Organoarsenicals such as roxarsone (ROX) pose a great threat to the eco-environment and human health. Herein, the degradation of ROX via UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) including UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS), and UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) processes are comparatively investigated. The removal efficiency of ROX in the UV-based AOPs follows the order of UV/H2O2 >UV/PDS>UV/PMS at pH 7.0, while UV/PDS is the most effective process in reducing the total organic carbon (TOC). The second-order rate constants of ROX with hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4•-) are determined to be (2.71 ± 0.27)× 109 and (7.68 ± 0.37)× 108 M-1s-1, respectively. The degradation of ROX obeys the pseudo-first-order kinetics model, and the apparent rate constants (k) linearly increase with increasing the oxidants dosage from 0.10 to 1.0 mM. The solution pH (5.0-11.0) exhibits a limited effect on the oxidation of ROX in UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS processes, but a great enhancement is observed at pH 11.0 in UV/PMS process. Humic acid and bicarbonate obviously suppress the photodegradation of ROX. In addition, arsenic in ROX is mainly converted to As(V) in the three UV-based AOPs. Overall, this study provides essential information for the degradation of ROX via the traditional UV-based AOPs.

Abstract:Organoarsenic compounds have been widely used as feed additives in livestock and poultry breeding. They are excreted in manure and thus cause environmental pollution. Moreover, organoarsenic compounds can be transformed into other arsenic species with higher toxicity. There is little knowledge on the transformation of organoarsenic compounds in the presence of iron species. Here, we studied the transformation of roxarsone (4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenylarsonic acid) in the presence of ferrous ion (Fe(II)) and tetrapolyphosphate. Various generated arsenic species were monitored. Results show that 94.8% of roxarsone was degraded within 30 min in 10 mmol L−1 Fe(II) and 50 mmol L−1 tetrapolyphosphate under air atmosphere. 70% of roxarsone arsenic was converted to As(V) species by hydroxyl radicals generated in the air system. Moreover, roxarsone is reductively transformed into other organoarsenic compounds, for example 4-hydroxy-3-aminophenylarsonic acid, by accepting electrons from the Fe(II)–tetrapolyphosphate complex. The toxicity and mobility of the generated inorganic or organic arsenic species are higher than those of roxarsone, which may induce serious environment and human health problems.
Highly Effective Oxidation of Roxarsone by Ferrate and Simultaneous Arsenic Removal with in Situ Formed Ferric Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is used in breeding industry to prevent infection by parasites, stimulate livestock growth and improve pigmentation of livestock meat. After being released into environment, ROX could be bio-degraded with the formation of carcinogenic inorganic arsenic (As) species. Here, ferrate oxidation of ROX was reported, in which we studied total-As removal, determined reaction kinetics, identified oxidation products, and proposed a reaction mechanism. It was found that the apparent second-order rate constant (k(app)) of ferrate with ROX was 305 M(-1)s(-1) at pH 7.0, 25 degrees C, and over 95% of total As was removed within 10 min when ferrate/ROX molar ratio was 20:1. Species-specific rate constants analysis showed that HFeO(4) over bar was the dominant species reacting with ROX. Ferrate initially attacked As-C bond of ROX and resulted in the formation of arsenate and 2-nitrohydroquinone. The arsenate was simultaneously removed by ferric nanoparticles formed in the reduction of ferrate, while 2-nitrohydroquinone was further oxidized into nitro-1,4-benzoquinone. Organocopper complexes during roxarsone degradation in wastewater lagoons

Abstract:Background, aim, and scope: Organoarsenical-containing animal feeds that promote growth and resistance to parasites are mostly excreted unchanged, ending up in nearby wastewater storage lagoons. Earlier work documented the partial transformation of organoarsenicals, such as, 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid (roxarsone) to the more toxic inorganic arsenate [As(V)] and 3-amino-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid (3-AHPAA). Unidentified roxarsone metabolites using liquid chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC/ICP-MS) were also inferred from the corresponding As mass balance. Earlier batch experiments in our laboratory suggested the presence of organometallic (Cu) complexes during relevant roxarsone degradation experiments. We hypothesized that organocopper compounds were complexed to roxarsone, mediating its degradation in field-collected swine wastewater samples from storage lagoons. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of organometallic (Cu) complexes during roxarsone degradation under aerobic conditions in swine wastewater suspensions, using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ES-MS). Materials and methods: Two swine wastewater samples differing in % solids content and total recoverable Cu concentrations were reacted with 500 ppb of roxarsone under aerobic conditions for 16 days. LC/ICP-MS and ES-MS were used for As speciation analyses, and characterization of metal-organoarsenical complexes in swine wastewater subsamples, respectively. Results and discussion: An organocopper roxarsone metabolite was found only in the high-Cu wastewater sample, suggesting the role of Cu in roxarsone degradation under aerobic conditions. The organocopper metabolite was not found in the low-Cu wastewater sample, because roxarsone did not undergo degradation under aerobic conditions even after 16 days. Conclusions: Aerobic degradation of organoarsenicals (roxarsone) has not been documented before. Preliminary dataset from this study illustrates the direct and/or indirect association of particulate Cu in catalyzing roxarsone degradation under aerobic conditions in samples with high % solids content. Recommendations and perspectives: Concerns regarding the degradation of roxarsone in wastewater to the more toxic inorganic As may be partially linked to the presence of particulate Cu. The presence of Cu in wastewater-suspended particle surfaces has never been coupled before to organoarsenicals degradation reactions, thus, further studies are needed to elucidate the related reaction mechanisms and pathways. Water depth-dependent solid particle distribution profiles in wastewater storage lagoons could provide empirical evidence towards the design of effective degradation practices for nitrophenol-containing compounds, such as, organoarsenical-containing antibiotics, or explosive munitions compounds.
Natural Degradation of Roxarsone in Contrasting Soils: Degradation Kinetics and Transformation Products

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is transformed to more toxic arsenicals after land application of ROX-containing poultry litter to agricultural soils. To date, no reports have compared ROX degradation in soils with contrasting properties. In this study, the impact of different incubation conditions on ROX degradation was investigated in red (C-Soil) and yellow-brown (H-Soil) soils. The degradation half-lives of extractable ROX in C-Soil and H-Soil were found to be 130-394d and 4-94d, respectively, indicating that the extractable ROX degraded faster in H-Soil. This result stems from the higher organic matter content, more abundant soil microbes, and lower ROX sorption capacity of H-Soil compared to C-Soil. Degradation of extractable ROX in both C-Soil and H-Soil was significantly promoted by soil moisture and exogenous glucose. Exogenous P(V) facilitated degradation of extractable ROX in C-Soil, but limited effects were observed for H-Soil. HPLC-ICP-MS analysis confirmed that ROX and dimethylarsinic acid were the predominant As species in soil extracts from 119-day incubated C-Soil and H-Soil, respectively. Ultimately, minimal transformation of extractable ROX was observed in C-Soil, but the majority of extractable ROX in H-Soil was biologically transformed. The differences in degradation of extractable ROX in C-Soil and H-Soil highlight the key roles of soil properties on the environmental fate of ROX and associated arsenicals. Results from this study inform the need for comprehensive evaluation of the ecological risks in organoarsenical-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is a typical organoarsenic feed additive, and most of ROX is excreted unchanged in manure and wastewater. The stability and mobility of ROX result in the environmental risk of arsenic contamination spreading. The degradation of ROX to arsenate (As(V)) can reduce the mobility and environmental risk. Riboflavin is a photosensitizer and can catalyze ROX to As(V), but it is not stable in water environment. In this study, riboflavin-derivative 2', 3', 4', 5'-tetraacetylriboflavin (RTA) was used to replace riboflavin as photosensitizer. The possibility of ROX photodegradation using riboflavin-derivative (RTA) as photosensitizer was investigated. The results showed that RTA was more stable than riboflavin in water environment. ROX was degraded to arsenite (As(III)) by RTA in 90 min under simulated sunlight irradiation and 50 min under natural sunlight irradiation, and further to As(V). The degradation was inhibited under acidic or alkaline pH conditions, while was favorable under neutral pH conditions. The mechanisms of ROX degradation by RTA were further explored. O-1(2), O-2(center dot-) and excited RTA played important role in the RTA-sensitized ROX photodegradation. The photocatalytic degradation of roxarsone by RTA can reduce mobility of arsenic and the environmental risk caused by organoarsenicals.
Oxidation of Roxarsone Coupled with Sorptive Removal of the Inorganic Arsenic Released by Iron–Carbon (Fe–C) Microelectrolysis

Abstract:Iron–carbon (Fe–C) microelectrolysis was proposed as a novel method for simultaneous degradation of a model phenylarsenic compound, roxarsone (ROX), in manure leachate and removal of the inorganic arsenic released. The initial rate equation for ROX degradation was determined as r init = 1.55[ROX]1.0[Fe–C]0.9[H+]0.5 (μM/min), at the initial solution pH of 2.0–5.0 and in the presence of overdosed Fe–C filler. A unique advantage of Fe–C microelectrolysis process is that ROX was first reduced to 3-amino-4-hydroxyphenylarsenic acid by the atomic hydrogen generated by cathodic reduction under acidic conditions, which facilitated subsequent oxidative attack by HO•. The iron (hydro)oxide precipitate formed from iron corrosion effectively captured the inorganic arsenic released, reducing the residual arsenic level in the treated water and swine manure leachate to <100 μg/L (standard for irrigation water in China), while the treatment performance was barely affected by the major constitutes of water matrix. The residual level of arsenic in the effluent of a Fe–C microelectrolysis column could be kept consistently below 100 μg/L for 5 months with proper replenishment of the Fe–C filler. The concurrent occurrence of reduction and oxidation reactions and the in situ generation of iron (hydro)oxides make Fe–C microelectrolysis process particularly efficient for treating nitroaromatic compounds and organoarsenicals.

Abstract:The extensive use of roxarsone in the poultry and livestock industry has led to increasing arsenic contamination of soil and aquatic environments. Microbial activity, especially exoelectrogenic bacterium (EEB)-mediated roxarsone bioreduction, plays important roles in such a bioconversion. However, the biomolecular-level mechanism behind this process and the reduction pathways remain largely unclear. Herein, the rapid anaerobic reduction of roxarsone by several EEB was explored, and the degradation pathways were clarified by using Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 as the model. The knockout of undA/mtrC led to a 70% loss of the roxarsone bioreduction ability within the initial 48 h. Both extracellular and intracellular reductions occurred simultaneously, resulting in the production of As(III) as the main inorganic arsenic species. Adding anthraquinone 2,6-disulfonate as a mediator considerably increased the roxarsone reduction rate by 119%. Given the wide distribution of EEB in environments, our findings facilitate a better understanding of the transformation behaviors of arsenic compounds in natural environments and highlight the necessity of re-evaluating the environmental risks of roxarsone.
Influence of dissolved organic matter on the anaerobic biotransformation of roxarsone accompanying microbial community response

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX), commonly employed as a livestock feed additive, largely remains unmetabolized and is subsequently excreted via feces. ROX could cause serious environmental risks due to its rapid transformation and high mobility in the anaerobic subsurface environment. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important constituent of fecal organics in livestock waste and could affect the ROX biotransformation. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms governing the interaction between DOM and ROX biotransformation have not yet been elucidated in the anaerobic environment. In this study, the changes of ROX, metabolites, and microbial biomass in the solutions with varying DOM concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/L) under anaerobic environments were investigated during the ROX (200 mg/L) degradation. EEM-PARAFAC and metagenomic sequencing were combined to identify the dynamic shifts of DOM components and the functional microbial populations responsible for ROX degradation. Results indicated that DOM facilitated the anaerobic biotransformation of ROX and 200 mg/L ROX could be degraded completely in 28 h. The tryptophan-like within DOM functioned as a carbon source to promote the growth of microorganisms, thus accelerating the degradation of ROX. The mixed microflora involved in ROX anaerobic degrading contained genes associated with arsenic metabolism (arsR, arsC, acr3, arsA, nfnB, and arsB), and arsR, arsC, acr3 exhibited high microbial diversity. Variations in DOM concentrations significantly impacted the population dynamics of microorganisms involved in arsenic metabolism (Proteiniclasticum, Exiguobacterium, Clostridium, Proteiniphilum, Alkaliphilus, and Corynebacterium spp.), which in turn affected the transformation of ROX and its derivatives. This study reveals the mechanism of ROX degradation influenced by the varying concentrations of DOM under anaerobic environments, which is important for the prevention of arsenic contamination with elevated levels of organic matter.
Enhancing Roxarsone Degradation and In Situ Arsenic Immobilization Using a Sulfate-Mediated Bioelectrochemical System

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is widely used in animal farms, thereby producing organoarsenic-bearing manure/wastewater. ROX cannot be completely degraded and nor can its arsenical metabolites be effectively immobilized during anaerobic digestion, potentially causing arsenic contamination upon discharge to the environment. Herein, we designed and tested a sulfate-mediated bioelectrochemical system (BES) to enhance ROX degradation and in situ immobilization of the released inorganic arsenic. Using our BES (0.5 V voltage and 350 μM sulfate), ROX and its metabolite, 4-hydroxy-3-amino-phenylarsonic acid (HAPA), were completely degraded within 13–22 days. In contrast, the degradation efficiency of ROX and HAPA was <85% during 32-day anaerobic digestion. In a sulfate-mediated BES, 75.0–83.2% of the total arsenic was immobilized in the sludge, significantly more compared to the anaerobic digestion (34.1–57.3%). Our results demonstrate that the combination of sulfate amendment and voltage application exerted a synergetic effect on enhancing HAPA degradation and sulfide-driven arsenic precipitation. This finding was further verified using real swine wastewater. A double-cell BES experiment indicated that As(V) and sulfate were transported from the anode to the cathode chamber and coprecipitated as crystalline alacranite in the cathode chamber. Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX), a feed additive widely used worldwide, was degraded into toxic products in the natural environment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) based on nonradicals used for the degradation of ROX had not been reported. Herein, resorcinol–formaldehyde resins (RFs) produced by a simple high-temperature hydrothermal method had efficient photocatalytic properties to produce H 2 O 2 . FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) act as the activator and electron shuttle to decompose H 2 O 2 to produce 1 O 2 . RFs decorated with FeOOH quantum dots (RFs-Fe QDs ) were successfully synthesized and completely remove ROX with a rate of 0.03649 min −1 under simulated sunlight. Otherwise, the 99.42% arsenic-containing portion that shed from Roxarsone was eventually converted to As(V) and in-situ adsorbed by FeOOH quantum dots. The experiment data showed that ·OH, O 2 ·− and 1 O 2 participated in the degradation and 1 O 2 was the dominant reactive species. Moreover, the systems have excellent reusability and stability over a wide pH range. This study provided a new strategy for photocatalytic production of 1 O 2 to remove the ROX from water.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) remains to be as an organoarsenical feed additive used widely in developing countries. However, most of the ROX is excreted unchanged in manure, which could be readily photodegraded into inorganic arsenic derivatives. In this study, the comparative cytotoxicity and arsenic accumulation were evaluated after the exposure of Tetrahymenathermophila (T. thermophila) cell model to ROX and its photodegradates. The cytotoxic effects were estimated according to the relevant cell growth curves, morphologies and MTT assays. Phospholipid layer as basic membrane structure was mimicked to assess the correlation between membrane permeability and cytotoxicity. The biocompatibility of ROX was dependent on its tendency to interact with cell membrane while the cytotoxicity was induced by the trans-membrane of the inorganic arsenic species present in the photodegradates of ROX. Furthermore, the photodegradates of ROX-associated alterations of intracellular protein profiles were analyzed using a proteomic approach. Overall, the significance was clarified that the control of arsenic emission caused by the application of ROX needs to be imposed.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) remains to be as an organoarsenical feed additive used widely in developing countries. However, most of the ROX is excreted unchanged in manure, which could be readily photodegraded into inorganic arsenic derivatives. In this study, the comparative cytotoxicity and arsenic accumulation were evaluated after the exposure of Tetrahymena thermophila (T. thermophila) cell model to ROX and its photodegradates. The cytotoxic effects were estimated according to the relevant cell growth curves, morphologies and MTT assays. Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is an organoarsenic compound that is widely used as an additive in swine and poultry feed to inhibit disease and promote growth. Due to its low metabolism in animals, it is excreted in animal urine and feces leading to its widespread contamination of soils and aquatic ecosystems. Herein, we demonstrated that ROX can be adsorbed and subsequently reduced by a common iron sulfide (greigite - Fe3S4) in the pH range of 3.6 to 8.6. ROX removal processes followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model that was strongly pH dependent. The nitro group of ROX was reduced by structural sulfide rather than dissolved sulfide or ferrous iron to generate an amino-group containing product, 4-hydroxy-3-aminophenylarsonic acid (HAPA). At neutral to alkaline pH values ROX and HAPA are preferentially adsorbed rather than reduced on the Fe3S4 surface. The interaction between ROX and Fe3S4 was minimally affected by interactions with coexisting cations, anions and natural organic matter (humic acid). These novel findings provide new insights for understanding the transformation mechanism of ROX by iron sulfides minerals, and have practical application for designing efficient systems for advanced treatment of ROX.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX), a livestock growth enhancer, poses environmental and health hazards due to its remarkable stability, making traditional degradation methods ineffective. To tackle this issue, a novel Fenton-like composite, composed of nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on γ-aluminum oxide (nZVI/γ-Al 2 O 3 ), was synthesized to boost ROX degradation. Results demonstrated nearly complete mineralization of the ROX organic matrix within just 180 min, facilitated by the Lewis acidity sites of γ-Al 2 O 3 . Significantly, this composite exhibited selective adsorption of released AsO 4 3− ions on its surface, forming FeAsO 4 and Fe-As-Al complexes. It also established an internal redox cycle involving Fe(0), Fe(II), and Fe(III), ensuring a continuous and efficient generation of primary reactive oxygen species (·OH and O 2 ·− ). Thus, a simultaneous redox process occurred on the composite surface can be attributed to the synergy of the reducibility of nZVI and the oxidation catalyzed by ·OH and O 2 ·− . Initially, the nitro group of ROX was reduced by nZVI, forming more hydrophilic o-aminophenol, favoring subsequent oxidation and mineralization. Simultaneously, the As-C bonds in ROX were oxidized, yielding AsO 4 3− , which was subsequently adsorbed over extended reaction times. This innovative approach offers a potential solution for treating wastewater contaminated with metalloid-organic composite pollutants, addressing the environmental and health concerns associated with ROX residues.

Abstract:Roxarsone (ROX) is the main form of arsenic pollution in the world, and developing effective methods for its elimination is beneficial to human health and the ecological environment. Herein, we report glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan-encapsulated CoCe-LDH (layered double hydroxides) as an outstanding catalyst for the advanced oxidation of ROX and the efficient adsorption of inorganic arsenic. 100% of ROX and more than 98.5% of As(III)/As(V) were eliminated, and over 99.3% of remaining inorganic arsenic was oxidized to low-toxicity As(V) in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system, and some specific properties of LDH are considered the main reasons. The hierarchical anion exchange has been confirmed to be beneficial for constructing a high-concentration PMS interlayer microenvironment. The unique reverse electron transfer process induced 100% selective production of singlet oxygen. This work not only develops an advanced ROX removal method but also provides a new understanding of the LDH-based advanced oxidation process.

Abstract:The contamination of organoarsenic is becoming increasingly prominent while SR-AOPs were confirmed to be valid for their remediation. This study has found that the novel metal/carbon catalyst (Fe/C–Mn) prepared by solid waste with hierarchical pores could simultaneously degrade roxarsone (ROX) and remove As(V). A total of 95.6% of ROX (20 mg/L) could be removed at the concentration of 1.0 g/L of catalyst and 0.4 g/L of oxidant in the Fe/C–Mn/PMS system within 90 min. The scavenging experiment and electrochemical test revealed that both single-electron and two-electron pathways contributed to the ROX decomposition. Spectroscopic analysis suggested the ROX has been successfully mineralized while As(V) was fixed with the surface Fe and Mn. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and chromatographic analysis indicated that the As7, N8, O9 and O10 sites of ROX molecule were vulnerable to being attacked by nucleophilic, electrophilic and radical, resulting in the formation of several intermediates such as phenolic compounds. Additionally, the low metal leaching concentration during recycling and high anti-interference ability in various water matrices manifested the practicability of Fe/C–Mn/PMS system.

Abstract:Roxarsone is widely present in wastewaters of many animal farms in China. However, little is known about how long-term roxarsone exposure influences the nitrogen removal of biological wastewater treatment in agricultural settings. Here we investigated the nitrogen removal performance of a biological sequential batch reactor (SBR) and the changes of bacterial community, upon long-term roxarsone exposure. The long-term roxarsone dosing decreased the SBR nitrogen removal by 52.4%, with an immediate inhibition on denitrification and a delayed inhibition on nitrification. The analyses of bacterial enzymatic activities and 16 S rRNA sequencing revealed that bacterial activities generally decreased, and the nitrogen-cycling bacterial community was changed, particularly by the decrease (Acinetobacter and Methylophilaceae), persistence (Flavobacterium and Methylotenera), and emergence (Aeromonas) of certain bacterial genera. Overall, chronic roxarsone exposure could suppress nitrification and denitrification, which may even have broad implications on the use efficiency and cycling of nitrogen in agroecosystems.
