Abstract:We report here a simple and scalable process to fabricate graphene shape memory polymer composites. The graphene material was nanolayered graphene synthesized by a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. The free standing nanolayered graphene, in its pristine state, was used as a filler to fabricate epoxy based shape memory polymer composites by (1) direct dispersion in the diamine curing agent; (2) thermal curing with diepoxides. The shape memory properties of the polymer matrix impart a thermal healing capability into the composites, which was greatly enhanced at ultra-low filler contents of 0.0025 and 0.0125 vol%.

Abstract:In this work, linear polystyrene-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) and heteroarm star PS_22P2VP_22 ionizable block copolymers were used as dispersing agents for the liquid-phase exfoliation of pristine graphene. Various strategies such as direct exfoliation, film hydration and phase transfer have been employed and compared. The best strategy involved a two-step process, namely, pre-exfoliation of graphite in polymer/CHCl3 solutions followed by phase transfer to acidified water. High concentrations of stable aqueous suspensions of graphene flakes, highly enriched in monolayer structures, were then obtained by using the star-shaped copolymers as stabilizers. The as-prepared graphene/copolymer hybrids were used as a filler material in order to prepare functional polymer composites for mechanical reinforcement. Such copolymer-modified graphene sheets have proven to be efficient reinforcing agents of PVA, as a significant increase of storage modulus (145% higher than that of neat PVA) was achieved even at a low graphene weight fraction of 0.1 wt%.
Efficient Exfoliation of Graphite in Chloroform with a Pyrene-Containing Hyperbranched Polyethylene As Stabilizer to Render Pyrene-Functionalized High-Quality Graphene

Abstract:The use of stabilizers in liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in common solvents, and concurrently render functionalized graphene by adsorbing them on the exfoliated graphene surface. Thus, the exploration of novel stabilizers is especially important for graphene liquid-phase production and related applications. Herein, we report the successful application of a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE@Py) as the stabilizer for graphite exfoliation in chloroform. The polymer has a global hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple covalently bonded pyrene moieties as branch ends. It can be synthesized via ethylene copolymerization using a Pd-diimine catalyst under mild conditions, 0.1 MPa/25 degrees C. Due to the cooperative effect of the CH-pi and pi-pi interactions between the HBPE@Py and graphene surface, some of the polymer is irreversibly adsorbed on the latter, thus effectively preventing their re-stacking and concurrently rendering pyrene-functionalized graphene. This allows us to obtain stable dispersions of few-layer graphene with relatively high concentrations (0.10-0.50 mg mL(-1)) and exfoliation efficiencies (1.6-13.0%). The resultant graphene is confirmed to be high-quality and shown to be highly stable when dispersed in chloroform, even the free polymer has been thoroughly removed. From the dispersion, a flexible, conductive graphene film and polymer-based graphene nanocomposites have been successfully prepared. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Surfactant-Free Stabilization of Aqueous Graphene Dispersions Using Starch as a Dispersing Agent

Abstract:Attention to graphene dispersions in water with the aid of natural polymers is increasing with improved awareness of sustainability. However, the function of biopolymers that can act as dispersing agents in graphene dispersions is not well understood. In particular, the use of starch to disperse pristine graphene materials deserves further investigation. Here, we report the processing conditions of aqueous graphene dispersions using unmodified starch. We have found that the graphene content of the starch-graphene dispersion is dependent on the starch fraction. The starch-graphene sheets are few-layer graphene with a lateral size of 3.2 μm. Furthermore, topographical images of these starch-graphene sheets confirm the adsorption of starch nanoparticles with a height around 5 nm on the graphene surface. The adsorbed starch nanoparticles are ascribed to extend the storage time of the starch-graphene dispersion up to 1 month compared to spontaneous aggregation in a nonstabilized graphene dispersion without starch. Moreover, the ability to retain water by starch is reduced in the presence of graphene, likely due to environmental changes in the hydroxyl groups responsible for starch-water interactions. These findings demonstrate that starch can disperse graphene with a low oxygen content in water. The aqueous starch-graphene dispersion provides tremendous opportunities for environmental-friendly packaging applications.

Abstract:Graphene is an excellent 2D material that has extraordinary properties such as high surface area, electron mobility, conductivity, and high light transmission. Polymer composites are used in many applications in place of polymers. In recent years, the development of stable graphene dispersions with high graphene concentrations has attracted great attention due to their applications in energy, bio-fields, and so forth. Thus, this review essentially discusses the preparation of stable graphene–polymer composites/dispersions. Discussion on existing methods of preparing graphene is included with their merits and demerits. Among existing methods, mechanical exfoliation is widely used for the preparation of stable graphene dispersion, the theoretical background of this method is discussed briefly. Solvents, surfactants, and polymers that are used for dispersing graphene and the factors to be considered while preparing stable graphene dispersions are discussed in detail. Further, the direct applications of stable graphene dispersions are discussed briefly. Finally, a summary and prospects for the development of stable graphene dispersions are proposed.

Abstract:Graphene conductive inks have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and environmentally friendly nature. However, the dispersion of graphene in aqueous solution is still challenging. In this work, we synthesized an amphiphilic graft copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol-g-polyaniline (PVA-g-PANI), and studied the graphene dispersion prepared with the graft copolymer by high-speed shear dispersion. The amphiphilic graft copolymer can be used as a stabilizer and adhesive agent in graphene dispersion. Given the steric hindrance of the graft copolymer, the stability of graphene dispersion is improved by decreasing the probability of π-π stacking. PVA-g-PANI has a better stability on graphene dispersion than carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na) and a mixture of PVA and PANI. The graft copolymer has only a slight effect on the conductivity of graphene dispersion due to the existence of conductive PANI, which is beneficial for preparing the graphene dispersion with good conductivity and adhesion. Graphene dispersion is well-adapted to screen printing and is very stable with regard to the sheet resistance bending cycle.

Abstract:A highly reactive graphene dispersant that possesses multi Si─OH groups is developed. It can not only stabilize graphene in both water and ethanol at ultrahigh concentrations, but also self‐cross‐linkable via dehydration condensation. The unique feature makes it particularly suitable for the preparation of graphene‐doped phase change coatings, which is appropriate for plenty of substrates and various circumstances. High efficient dispersant that meanwhile possesses additional functions is highly desirable for the fabrication of graphene‐based composite. In this paper, a new reactive dispersant, multi‐silanols grafted naphthalenediamine (MSiND), is synthesized, which shows superiority compared with conventional dispersants. It can not only stabilize graphene in water at a high concentration of up to 16 mg mL−1, but also simultaneously be applicable for ethanol medium, in which the graphene concentration can be as high as 12 mg mL−1 at the weight ratio of 1:1 (MSiND:graphene). The dispersion is compatible with multi‐matrixes and affinity to various substrates. In addition, MSiND exhibits excellent reactivity due to the existence of high‐density silanol groups. Tough graphene coatings are constructed on glass slides and non‐woven fabric simply by direct painting and dip‐coating. Moreover, with the assistance of MSiND, graphene‐doped phase‐change coatings on hydrophobic non‐woven fabric (e.g., functional mask) are prepared via the spray method. The composite coatings show enhanced mechanical strength and excellent energy storage performance, exhibiting great potential in heat preservation and thermotherapy.

Abstract:Stable dispersion of reduced graphene in various organic solvents was achieved via noncovalent functionalization with amine-terminated polymers. An aqueous dispersion of reduced graphene was prepared by chemical reduction of graphene oxide in aqueous media and was vacuum filtered to generate reduced graphene sheets. Good solvents and nonsolvents for the dried reduced graphene were evaluated using a solubility test. To achieve stable dispersion in the evaluated nonsolvents, amine-terminated polystyrene was noncovalently functionalized to the graphene, while graphene sheets were phase transferred via sonication from aqueous phase to the organic nonsolvent phase, including the amine-terminated polymers. Thorough FTIR and Raman spectroscopy investigation verified that the protonated amine terminal group of polystyrene underwent noncovalent functionalization to the carboxylate groups at the graphene surface, providing the high dispersibility in various organic media.

Abstract:Efficient production of high-quality, functionalized graphene is highly desirable for large-scale applications of graphene. Herein, a route for producing high-quality, polystyrene (PS)-functionalized graphene is demonstrated via graphite exfoliation in chloroform with a heterobifunctional hyperbranched polyethylene, HBPE@Py@PS, as stabilizer. The HBPE@Py@PS, possessing a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple PS side chains, is synthesized by combining chain walking polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization techniques. It is confirmed that the HBPE@Py@PS can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in chloroform under sonication to render stable dispersions of high-quality graphene, with an exfoliation efficiency high as 15% and a monolayer proportion, 61%. Meanwhile, it can irreversibly adsorb on the exfoliated graphene surface based on the - stacking interactions, concurrently rendering PS-functionalized graphene that is fluorescent and highly dispersible in chloroform, with a film conductivity reaching 1100 S m(-1). The as-produced graphene may find its applications as nanofiller for various PS-based graphene nanocomposites.

Abstract:We report a simple method that can dissolve graphene oxide (GO) in pure organic solvents (e.g., propylene carbonate) as readily as in pure water to form stable dispersions of single layer GO sheets. The GO sheets dispersed in propylene carbonate exhibited much better structural stability than those in water.

Abstract:Exploring the graphene material is premised on the graphene sheets being single-layer graphene (SG) or bi-layer graphene (BG) state, and graphene suspension keeps stably disperse are critical. Since graphene has a highly conjugated system, it is easy to conduct strong π-π interaction with conjugated structure. In this paper, by dispersing graphene powder at low boiling point solvent water or ethanol, ensuring the excellent properties of graphene are not affected by the solvent, which simultaneously solves the difficulty of removing organic solvents. On the basis the concentration of graphene suspension can be greatly improved and no damage to the graphene sheets in the presence of dispersant. This method allows us to prepare a large amount of excellent graphene dispersion, making it possible to obtain graphene-based materials through the low-cost technology, as well as opening up the opportunity for exploiting the application of this nanocarbon material with unique structure.Graphical abstractᅟ

Covalent polymer functionalization of graphene nanosheets and mechanical properties of composites

Abstract:For developing high performance graphene-based nanocomposites, dispersal of graphene nanosheets in polymer hosts and precise interface control are challenging due to their strong interlayer cohesive energy and surface inertia. Here we report an efficient method to functionalize graphene nanosheets. The initiator molecules were covalently bonded to the graphene surface via a diazonium addition and the succeeding atom transfer radical polymerization linked polystyrene chains (82 wt% grafting efficiency) to the graphene nanosheets. The prominent confinement effect arising from nanosheets resulted in a 15 °C increase in the glass transition temperature of polystyrene compared to the pure polymer. The resulting polystyrene nanocomposites with 0.9 wt% graphene nanosheets revealed around 70% and 57% increases in tensile strength and Young's modulus. The protocol is believed to offer possibilities for optimizing the processing properties and interface structure of graphene-polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:The adsorption of organic polymers onto the surface of graphene oxide is known to improve its dispersibility in cement-based materials. However, the mechanism of this improvement at the atomic level is not yet fully understood. In this study, we employ a combination of DFT static calculation and umbrella sampling to explore the reactivity of polymers and investigate the effects of varying amounts of phenyl groups on their adsorption capacity on the surface of graphene oxide. Quantitative analysis is utilized to study the structural reconstruction and charge transfer caused by polymers from multiple perspectives. The interfacial reaction between the polymer and graphene oxide surface is further clarified, indicating that the adsorption process is promoted by hydrogen bond interactions and π-π stacking effects. This study sheds light on the adsorption mechanism of polymer-graphene oxide systems and has important implications for the design of more effective graphene oxide dispersants at the atomic level.
High-concentration Aliphatic and Aromatic Dispersions of Single- and Few-Layer Graphene Noncovalently Modified by Block Copolymer Crystallization

Abstract:Pristine graphene flakes, with ∼12% monolayers, are directly exfoliated from natural graphite, and noncovalently modified by an amorphous–crystalline block copolymer, polyvinylcyclohexane-b-polyethylene-b-polyvinylcyclohexane (PVCH-b-PE-b-PVCH). The PE block selectively crystallizes on the graphene surface, while the PVCH block extends freely and stabilizes the graphene flakes in the aliphatic and aromatic solvents, which are generally viewed as nonsolvents for graphene. The rational solubility of the graphene flakes in these low-boiling-point solvents facilitates their solution-phase processing. After vacuum filtration, a freestanding graphene film with excellent electrical and mechanical properties is obtained, which can meet the requirements of large-area graphene-based thin-film devices.

Abstract:This work describes, a quick and easy single‐step biofunctionalization method for dispersing graphene in aqueous media using an enzymatic conjugation approach to covalently incorporate short aromatic/charged tripeptides giving rise to homogenous graphene functionalization. The resulting stable graphene dispersions hold significant promise for enhancing biocompatibility for diverse biological applications. Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene—aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π‐stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non‐covalent support via π–π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.

Abstract:Graphene oxides (GO) can be considered as polyelectrolytes with surfactant-like characteristics. On one hand, due to the electrical repulsion between the negatively charged ionized edges, GO exhibits great water solubility; on the other hand, its hydrophobic central plane retains the potential of strong pi-pi interaction with other conjugated sp(2) network structures. Therefore, it is expected that GO can serve as an excellent dispersing agent for dispersion of various carbon-based nanomaterials in aqueous phase. Here we report a systematic study of dispersing various carbon-based nanomaterials, including SWNTs, C-60, and graphene, by aqueous GO. The GO-dispersed all-carbon nanocomposites are characterized using various spectroscopic methods and electron microscopies, and their stabilities are tested. Compared to other dispersing agents, the GO concentration is much lower than the concentrations of other dispersing agents used when similar contents of carbon-based nanomaterials are dispersed. Involving only simple ultrasonication and centrifugation processes, GO dispersion thus offers an easy manipulation for large-scale solution-dispersed all-carbon nanocomposites.
Preparation of a Highly Stable Dispersion of Graphene in Water with the Aid of Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Utilization of graphene (GE) in water is physically limited by its lack of functional groups, high hydrophobicity, and large interlayer van der Waals forces. Easy agglomeration of GE makes the preparation of GE-filled composites in an aqueous environment very difficult. Conventional methods solve this problem by introducing a surfactant to the system. However, the addition of a large amount of surfactant may hinder the performance of the composite. In this study, highly stable GE aqueous suspensions (remaining stable for more than 30 days) with a high concentration (1.5 mg/mL) were conveniently prepared by using graphene oxide (GO) as a stabilizer. A GE- and GO-filled rubber composite prepared by this GO–GE water suspension in an aqueous environment was also prepared and analyzed. It was found that a dual-network with dual functions was formed in the composite matrix: the GE network enhanced the electrical conductivity of the composite, while the GO network enhanced its mechanical properties. Our method is green, simple, and highly efficient, providing an alternative to improve GE's dispersion in water and synthesize GE-filled composites in an aqueous environment.

Abstract:A simple “grafting to” method is developed to covalently functionalize chemically modified graphene with a polystyrene-based graft copolymer, polystyrene-g-(glycidyl methacrylate-co-styrene) (PS-g-(GMA-co-St)). PS-grafted graphene (PS-g-graphene for short), with a PS grafting degree of ∼60wt%, is soluble in a wide variety of organic solvents. A freestanding, highly flexible film of PS-g-graphene is obtained by vacuum filtration of a PS-g-graphene/chloroform solution with a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane, and its electrical conductivity is measured to be ∼170Sm−1. The film itself is a mechanically strong, electrically conductive graphene/PS composite film.
