Abstract:The accurate prediction of the aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic data for a reentry vehicle at high altitudes is often an important guidance for the design of the thermal protection system. During the reentry process, the hypersonic vehicles will intensively experience complicated physical and chemical phenomena, primarily including the real gas effects and rarefied gas effects. In this study, the model of nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR) is introduced for the numerical simulations of hypersonic reentry flows with the effects of thermochemical nonequilibrium and rarefaction nonequilibrium, as well as Gupta’s chemical kinetic model and Park’s two-temperature model are employed. Two numerical examples, including hypersonic flows around the ELECTRE vehicle at 54.3 km and the Orion command model at 105 km, are used to examine the performance of the present solution. It is found that the results computed by NCCR model, especially the heat flux distributions along the solid surface, are in better agreement with those of direct simulation Monte Carlo or flight data than the conventional Navier-Stokes equations.

Abstract:Aiming at the ball-twin-cone ballistic-aerodynamic reentry vehicles with carbon-based material,the thermal environment and ablation mathematical physics model was built.Based on geometric-streamline method,the heat flux calculation method for the reentry vehicle surface with the angle of attack was established.By ablation mechanism of carbon-based material,the corresponding ablation model was created,and the ablation engineering calculation method of wall was proposed.The thermal environment and ablation characteristics of the vehicle with carbon-based material were analyzed under hypersonic conditions.The experiment shows that the method proposed is robust,and it provides a theoretical basis for thermal protection design of ballistic-aerodynamic reentry vehicles.

Abstract:This paper describes the methodology for computing hypersonic flight vehicle electromagnetic scattering characteristics under condition of thermochemical nonequilibrium ablation flow using Maxwell Equations and Navier-Stokes Equations. Some previous work has been report by Bhaskar et al. (2005) for calculating microwave scattering from metallic objects shielded by a plasma shroud and by Chen et al. (2005) for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on hypersonic reentry vehicles. For obtaining the flow field parameters especially thermochemical nonequilibrium ablation flow components, 13 species 34 reactions chemical reaction model and heat conduction model were utilized for flow field and structure temperature field simulation respectively. In consideration of rarefied effect, Slip boundary condition was also used in the process of solving N-S Equations. Based on the flow field results, a piecewise linear current density recursive convolution finite-difference time-domain (PLJERC-FDTD) algorithm was applied to calculate backward Radar Cross-Section (RCS) and bistatic RCS in P&L-band. Through above methods, the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of a HTV-2 type vehicle wrapped in carbon based material were studied.

Abstract:As all known, there exists extremely thermal and chemical non-equilibrium phenomenon in hypersonic flows. Much effort has been put into the development of computational models for the prediction of such non-equilibrium flow. In order to obtain the real physical solution of the challenging non-equilibrium problems, Eu proposed a set of generalized hydrodynamic equations (GHE) from the viewpoint of generalized hydrodynamics. Based on Eu's GHE equations, Myong developed an efficient computational model, named as the nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR). The present study is based on the 3-D FVM NCCR model in conjunction with 7-species chemical reaction model to consider the reacting gas effect for hypersonic reentry vehicles. For further examining the performance of the proposed computational model, the typical engineering cases of Radio Attenuation Measurements (RAM)-C II vehicle are adopted. The flow contours, distribution profiles along stagnation line and surface properties are compared between nonlinear coupled constitutive model and those of the Navier-Stokes equation. The accuracy and physical consistency of the NCCR model are critically examined and validated for hypersonic reaction flow in the continuum region. For the near continuum region, the NCCR model can predict non-equilibrium phenomenon more accurately than NS equation through the comparison of shock stand-off distance and electron number density. The comparisons between NCCR model with one component perfect gas and multi-species reacting gas effect are also made to show the importance of chemical reaction source term.
Analysis of Weakly Ionized Ablation Plasma Flows for a Hypersonic Vehicle

Abstract:Hypersonic vehicles are enveloped by a plasma sheath that affects the data transmission and object identification. This paper develops a numerical methodology based on Magnetohydrodynamics equations to study the electromagnetic environment of hypersonic vehicles under the condition of carbon-based thermal protection material ablation. A surface ablation model considering the oxidation and sublimation ablation process is coupled with a Navier–Stokes solver by a gas–solid interaction method to simulate the ablation plasma flows. A piecewise linear current density recursive convolution finite-difference time-domain method is applied to further analyze the interaction between the incident electromagnetic wave and the plasma sheath. The computational results for an HTV-2 type vehicle indicate that both ablation and non-ablation plasma sheaths have significant effects on the electromagnetic environment of the vehicle. Compared with a non-ablation plasma sheath, ablation results in a decrease in the number of electrons and increases the number of neutral particles and therefore changes characteristic parameters of the plasma. Details of the electromagnetic scattering characteristics are reported to highlight the influences of ablation on the reflectivity, penetrability, and absorptivity of the plasma sheath for incident electromagnetic waves over different bands.

Abstract:To predict aeroheating performance of hypersonic vehicles accurately in thermochemical nonequilibrium flows accompanied by rarefaction effect, a Nonlinear Coupled Constitutive Relations(NCCR) model coupled with Gupta’s chemical models and Park’s two-temperature model is firstly proposed in this paper. Three typical cases are intensively investigated for further validation, including hypersonic flows over a two-dimensional cylinder, a RAM-C II flight vehicle and a type HTV-2 flight vehicle. The results predicted by NCCR solution, such as heat flux coefficient and electron number densities, are in better agreement with those of direct simulation Monte Carlo or flight data than Navier-Stokes equations, especially in the extremely nonequilibrium regions, which indicates the potential of the newly-developed solution to capture both thermochemical and rarefied nonequilibrium effects. The comparisons between the present solver and NCCR model without a two-temperature model are also conducted to demonstrate the significance of vibrational energy source term in the accurate simulation of high-Mach flows.

Abstract:Carbon/carbon (C/C) composites as one of thermal protection materials for hypersonic vehicles are subjected to extreme thermochemical ablation and mechanical erosion, and the characterization and evaluation of thermal protection properties of C/C composites is a critical and challenging task. An ablation model for the analysis of thermal protection properties of C/C composites systematically considering thermochemical ablation and mechanical erosion is established. Firstly, a heterogeneous surface roughness model and a mechanical erosion criterion on mesoscale are adopted and numerically solved by finite volume method and piecewise linear interface calculation algorithm. Mechanical erosion factor is obtained by comparing the mass loss rates with and without mechanical erosion. Then, the thermochemical ablation model of C/C composites on macroscale is built based on finite element method, which contains element mass conservation equation, thermochemical equilibrium theory, and the multi-physical field analysis of heat and mass transfer. The mechanical erosion factor is introduced into the macroscopic ablation analysis of C/C composites. The ablation model of C/C composites is validated by comparing with experimental and analytical results. Finally, the results of mechanical erosion factor of C/C composites are calculated and discussed, and the temperature field and exterior ablation morphology of nose tip of hypersonic vehicle are analyzed. It shows that the ablation model can well analyze the thermal protection properties of C/C composites in the thermal protection system of hypersonic vehicle under the consideration of thermochemical ablation and mechanical erosion.

Abstract:The mass loss of thermal protection material under the condition of high temperatures,enthalpies and pressures is caused by physical,chemical and mechanical factors and the change of material thermomechanical properties and thermophysical properties at high temperatures is irreversible,showing complex nonlinear characteristics.The present paper is devoted to the development and establishment of corresponding thermochemical and thermomechanical ablative models by analyzing flow and C/C composite materials ablative mechanism.With the help of the conservation law of mass and energy and thermochemical equilibrium of system chemical reaction,the thermal conduct equation is presented based on a moving boundary caused by linear ablation;the mathematical equation is solved numerically by a nonlinear coupling scheme,while the changes of material properties with temperature are consi-(dered).The calculated results characterize the dynamic thermomechanical behavior of the material in special environments such as high temperature.This analysis accords well with experimental data.The analysis realizes instantaneous simulation of ablation effected by complex coupling factors of high temperature and load.
Modeling and Simulation of Radiation from Electronic Transitions in Hypersonic Atmospheric Reentry Flow

Abstract:Scholz, Curtis MSAE, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, May 2015. Modeling and Simulation of Radiation from Electronic Transitions in Hypersonic Atmospheric Reentry Flow. A capability for higher accuracy heat transfer modeling in CFD for hypersonic reentry flows, via inclusion of thermal radiation, is sought. With temperatures reaching tens of thousands of degrees, radiation is known to be significant to chemical reaction rates and thermal boundary layer development, hence surface heat transfer and thermal ablation both to the heat shield and the backshell region of re-entry vehicles. Two current NASA solicitations seek such an improved capability relative to the Mars and Earth entry problems, as uncertainty typically leads to overdesign and excess weight. The present research develops a first physics-based “building block,” which computes thermal radiation line strength distributions for certain species of interest. The spectral data required as inputs – electronic transition rates, energies, and wavelengths – for atomic nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen are obtained from a database maintained by NIST. Vibrational and rotational transitions of diatomic molecules are not addressed here. Absorption and emission coefficients are computed, hence an effective radiative thermal conductivity according to Rosseland is used in the “optically thick,” or “diffusion” approximation. Absorption and emission coefficients compared respectably with other published results, discrepancies attributable to differing sources of input spectral data. The computational module was implemented in an in-house Navier-Stokes research code, and demonstrated on a 2D hypersonic flow over a blunt body. The radiative diffusion model reduced peak temperatures and thermal gradients, as expected.

Abstract:Abstract: A new flow-thermal-structural coupling approach based on coupled heat transfer simulation is applied to the analysis of a hypersonic aerodynamically heated leading edge. The three-dimensional unsteady flow-thermal-structural coupling is studied for Mach Number 6.47 flow over a cylinder for which the flow behavior and aero-thermal loads are calibrated by experimental data, and the numerical results of surface pressure, cold-wall heating-rate, hot-wall heating-rate and temperature distributions are all well consistent with experimental data. Interactions between the flow, structural heat transfer and deformation as well as the requirement of grid resolution for k – ε – R turbulence model are also studied.

Abstract:<p>With the development of hypersonic vehicles, reentry vehicles are facing a more severe aerothermodynamic heating environment. It is necessary to design high‐efficiency charring composite used as the heat shield in the thermal protection system (TPS) of reentry vehicles. By taking the material responses (volume‐surface coupled ablation), exothermic gas‐phase reactions of pyrolysis gases in the boundary layer and the flow behavior of chemical nonequilibrium inflow coupling ablative mechanism into consideration, a developed thermal/fluid/chemical/ablation coupling model with the key influencing factor on thermal protection performance of charring composites is built to evaluate the material responses and the chemical responses in boundary layer near its surface. Based on this model, the key factor (fiber volume fraction) influencing on the thermal protection performance is analyzed by using a coupling numerical calculation strategy. By designing the distribution of this parameter along the thickness of the material, a gradient design for charring composite is given. The numerical results indicate that the gradient charring composite can control the temperature distribution and the amount of surface ablation recession. This study will be a guidance for the design of charring composites for thermal protection application in reentry vehicles in a quantitative and efficient manner.</p>

Abstract:The strong coupling interactions of non-equilibrium flow, microscopic particle collisions and radiative transitions within the shock layer of hypersonic atmospheric re-entry vehicles makes accurate prediction of the aerothermodynamics challenging. Therefore, in this study a self-consistent non-equilibrium flow, collisional–radiative reactions and radiative transfer fully coupled model are established to study the non-equilibrium characteristics of the flow field and radiation of vehicle atmospheric re-entry. The comparison of the present calculation results with flight data of FIRE II and previous results in the literature shows a reasonable agreement. The thermal, chemical and excited energy level non-equilibrium phenomena are obtained and analysed for the different FIRE II trajectory points, which form the critical basis for studying the heat transfer and radiation. The non-equilibrium distribution of excited energy levels significantly exists in the post-shock and near-wall regions due to the rapid vibrational dissociation and electronic under-excitation, as well as the wall catalytic reactions. The analysis of stagnation-point heating of FIRE II illustrates that the translational–rotational convection and the dissociation component diffusion play key roles in the aerodynamic heating of the wall region. The spectrally resolved radiative intensity in the entire flow field indicates that the vacuum ultraviolet radiation caused by the high-energy nitrogen atomic spectral lines makes the main contribution to the radiative transfer. Finally, it is found that the non-equilibrium flow–radiation coupling effect can exacerbate the excited energy level non-equilibrium, and further affect the gas radiative properties and radiative transfer. This fully coupled study provides an effective method for reasonable prediction of atmospheric re-entry flow and radiation fields.

Abstract:<p>Owing to their structural efficiency, the development of structurally integrated thermal protection systems (SITPS) for the next generation aerospace vehicles is currently of interest. Herein, an all-composite sandwich structure with corrugated core is devised and fabricated. After homogenization of the corrugated core, a one-dimensional (1-D) analytical model is developed. The surface ablation is described by considering thermal decomposition, phase transition and thermochemical ablation. With the thermal loading and moving boundary conditions determined by the surface ablation calculation, a heat transfer analysis is performed. To provide insight into the effect of lateral heat transfer and thermal short through the sandwich structures, a two-dimensional (2-D) finite element model is also presented. In addition, a thermal exposure experimental test with oxyacetylene flame is carried out to validate the proposed models. The 1-D analytical model is found to be of satisfactory accuracy, which is useful for rapid preliminary SITPS design.</p>

An implicit coupling framework for numerical simulations between hypersonic nonequilibrium flows and charring material thermal response in the presence of ablation

Abstract:An implicit coupling framework between hypersonic nonequilibrium flows and material thermal response is proposed for the numerical simulation of ablative thermal protection materials during its flight trajectory. Charring ablative materials, when subjected to aerodynamic heating from hypersonic flows, undergo complex processes such as ablation and pyrolysis, involving heterogeneous and homogeneous chemical reactions. These multi-physical phenomena are simulated by a multicomponent material thermal response (MTR) solver that takes into account the complexity of component of pyrolysis gases. The species concentrations are calculated to improve the accuracy of transport and thermophysical parameters of pyrolysis gases. The MTR solver implements implicit time integration on finite difference discretization form to achieve higher efficiency. The numerical solutions of hypersonic flows and material thermal response are coupled through a gas-surface interaction interface based on surface mass and energy balance on the ablating surface. The coupled simulation employs the dual time-step technique, which introduces pseudo time step to improve temporal accuracy. The explicit coupling mechanism updates the interfacial quantities at physical time steps, which achieves higher computational efficiency, but introduces time discretization errors and numerical oscillations of interfacial quantities. In contrast, the implicit coupling mechanism updates the interfacial quantities at pseudo time steps, which reduces the temporal discretization error and suppresses numerical oscillations, but is less efficient. In addition, a simplified ablation boundary based on steady-state ablation assumption or radiation-equilibrium assumption is proposed to approximate solid heat conduction without coupling the MTR solution, providing quasi-steady flow solutions in the presence of ablation.

Abstract:Ablation experiments of C/C composite materials were conducted by using arc plasma jet. The ablated surfaces of the C/C composite material samples were monitored by using the online spectrum diagnoses during the ablation experiments. Based on energy balance, mass conservation and chemical equilibrium equations, surface ablative model was established for the C/C composite materials to study the ablation process and the thermal environment parameters. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical solution and experimental results. The ablative experiment and analytical model can be recognized as the basic research method for the thermal protection materials in the aerospace applications.

Abstract:Gas–surface interactions between thermal protection materials and high-enthalpy nonequilibrium flow are one of the greatest challenges in accurately predicting aerodynamic heating during supersonic flights. Finer microscopic details of flow properties are required for elaborate simulation of these interactions. Spectral insight, with quantum-state-specific characteristics, is provided in this work to investigate the physico-chemical processes in high temperature interface of a carbon/carbon (C/C) composite. The nonequilibrium air flow is produced by a 1.2 MW inductively coupled plasma wind tunnel at an enthalpy of 20.08 MJ/kg. The duration of each test is up to 100 s, and quartz is also tested for comparison. Spectral insights into the reaction mechanisms of the gas–surface interactions are acquired by the optical emission spectroscopy and laser absorption spectroscopy. Dynamic evolution of the chemical reaction pathways and thermal nonequilibrium are discussed based on the results of optical emission spectroscopy. Temporally and spatially resolved results of the translational temperature and number density of atomic oxygen are quantified by laser absorption spectroscopy. Controlling mechanisms in the surface chemistry are further analyzed in conjunction with the surface temperature, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Reaction mechanisms on the C/C composite surface sequentially experience an oxidation-dominant, an intense competitive, a nitridation-dominant, and a recession dominant period. Distributions in the axial direction and dynamic characteristics of the translational temperature and number density of atomic oxygen are found closely related with surface swelling, recession, and chemical reactions. The results herein are consistent with each other and are instructive to further investigate the interface evolution on C/C composites.

Abstract:The hypersonic craft necessitates significant advancements in thermal shielding to safeguard against the extreme aero-thermal environments encountered during flight at hypersonic speeds in near space or upon reentry from space. Carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (FRCMCs) have attracted increasingly interesting attention as advanced structural materials for application in thermal protection. The reactive melt infiltration (RMI) process is preferred for the preparation of FRCMCs because of its low cost and short processing time. However, the RMI process includes the complex interplay of melt flow, reaction dynamics, and thermal fields, with existing models failing to accurately predict these processes due to their uncoupled nature and neglect of pore structure changes. This study introduces a coupled model that integrates mass transfer flow, chemical reaction, and heat transfer, incorporating variable pore structures to more accurately evaluate the RMI process. This approach allows for a comprehensive assessment of internal pressure, temperature, and porosity changes during silicon infiltration into porous media, marking an improvement over the previous model. The model has been validated for use in predicting the exotherm of RMI processes. In conclusion, this coupled model presents a promising avenue for enhancing the fabrication of FRCMCs, either considering the melt infiltration from multiple locations in the RMI process or adjusting the pore structure at the infiltration location to larger pores.
