Abstract:Magnesium hydroxide sulfate whisker-phenolic resin composites were prepared by in-situ polymerization.Whiskers pre-treated with a coupling agent exhibit good disperstity.With analysis of TGA and DSC,it has been found that the phenolic resin has better thermal stability in the stage of high temperature and higher curing rate when a small amount of the pre-treated whisker is introduced by in-situ polymerizatoin.Flexural strength and impact strength of the molding materials made by the whisker-phenoloc resin composite are obviously increased also.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and morphology of PP/Magn e sium hydrate whisker(M-HOS), PP/POE and PP/M-HOS/POE composites were investiga ted. The rigidity of PP increased with increasing amount of M-HOS. The PP/M-HO S system exhibited optima of both tensile and impact strengths at an M-HOS cont ent of 10 wt%. POE may improve the impact strength of PP and the brittle-ductil e transition at ambient and low temperatures occurred at POE contents of 15 wt% and 40 wt%, respectively. M-HOS and POE gave rise to a synergistic toughening e ffect for PP.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.

Abstract:The CaCO 3 whisker is a new kind of needle like crystal which was found in recent years,it can intensify and toughen the polymer composites as filler.This paper studies the rheological properties of the polymers(PP,PVC and HDPE)filled respectively with CaCO 3 whisker,K 2TiO 3 whisker and light CaCO 3, compares the rheological behaviours to each other.The result shows that the heological behaviours of both whisker fllers are obviously better than light CaCO 3. As CaCO 3 whisker is cheaper than K 2TiO 3 whisker, CaCO 3 whsker′s application will be much wider.

Abstract:Halogen-free, flame retardant low density polyethylene (LDPE) composites, using magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate (MHSH) whiskers as a flame retardant, combined with microencapsulated red phosphorous (MRP) as a synergist, have been prepared using a two-roll mill. Their fire properties were determined by using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the UL-94 test and cone calorimetry. The results showed that MRP was a good synergist in improving the flame retardance of the LDPE/MHSH whisker system. Poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA), used as a compatibilizer, increased the fire performance of LDPE/MHSH whisker composites.
Study on the erosion wear characteristics and mechanisms of UBHMWPE/kaolin composites

Abstract:Two kinds of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/Kaolin composites were prepared by melt mixing and polymerization filling respectively. The erosion wear characteristics of these composites and their relations with the velocity of a sand slurry were investigated on an erosion-wear tester. The wear mechanisms of the composites were discussed through examining and analyzing the worn surfaces with scanning electron microscopy It was found that the UHMWPE/Kaolin composite containing about 6.6% (mass fraction) Kaolin prepared by polymerization filling has much better erosion-wear properties than UHMWPE, so that it is a promising structural material candidate for engineering application.

Abstract:MS whisker modified by a coupling agent Step 1: KH570, Step 2: interfacial interaction between modified. whisker, EAA, and SR/EVM matrix. Silicone rubber/ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer/magnesium sulfate whisker composites containing ethylene‐acrylic acid copolymer (MS/SR/EVM/EAA) as a compatibilizer were successfully prepared. Moreover, the magnesium sulfate whisker surface was modified with 3 wt% of silane coupling agent (KH570), resulting in composites including (unmodified magnesium sulfate whisker) uMS/SR/EVM, (modified magnesium sulfate whisker) mMS/SR/EVM, and mMS/SR/EVM/EAA were compared. The values of thermal decomposition activation energy (Ea) calculated by the two different methods (Kissinger and Friedman methods) show that the composites filled with 5 and 20 phr whiskers have lower values of activation energy (Ea) than the SR/EVM blend. The tensile strength of composites with a 5 phr modified whisker is 14.5 MPa, which is higher than that of the SR/EVM blend and uMS5/SR/EVM composite. The tear strength of the composite with 20 phr mMS is 51.6 kN m−1, much higher than that of the composite with 20 phr uMS and SR/EVM blend. The mechanical properties were also investigated after thermal aging of the composites at 85°C for 48 h. The thermal conductivity of the composites with high filler loading was studied.

Abstract:Flame retardant maleated polyethylene/magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate whisker (MAPE/MHSH) composites containing organo-modified montmorillonite (OMT) were prepared by direct melt intercalation. Their morphology, combustion behaviour and thermal stability were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cone calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The exfoliation of silicate layers within MAPE has been verified by XRD and TEM images. Cone calorimetry results indicated that a synergistic flame retardant effect on reducing heat release rate (HRR) occurred when MHSH and OMT were both present in nanocomposite. The reduction in HRR improved as the mass fraction of OMT was increased from 2 to 10 wt%, but there was little improvement above 5 wt% OMT loading level. TGA profiles of the nanocomposites revealed that the thermodegradation stability of the nanocomposites decreased as the OMT fraction increased from 2 to 10 wt%.

Abstract:The calcium sulfate hemihydrate (HH) whiskers were prepared by using phosphogypsum (PG) as raw materials in autoclave-free hydrothermal system. The influences of glycerol content, reaction temperature, and ratio of solid/solution on whiskers growth were detected. The whiskers with smooth surface and high aspect ratio were obtained with 1: 9 ratio of solid/solution in a 50 vol% glycerol solution at 105 degrees C. The influence of whiskers surface treatment on composites (polypropylene (PP) matrix) mechanical properties were detected by using surface modification reagent (stearic acid (SA) and silane coupling agent (SCA), respectively). The influence of whiskers addition content on composites properties also explored. The high tensile strength of composites (37.6 MPa) was obtained with a 10 wt% whiskers addition content, which the whiskers were treated by using SCA.

Abstract:In this study, modified and non-modified composites of polypropylene (PP) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) filled with magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)(2))were investigated, and maleic acid anhydride-grafted PP or LLDPE (MAH-g-PP, or MAH-gLLDPE) were used as polymer modifiers. In the composites, when the LLDPE was partially replaced by MAH-g-LLDPE, the notched Izod impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of the composites increased, while the modulus decreased. When the PP was partially replaced by MAH-g-PP, the tensile strength and flexural strength of the composites increased, and the impact strength and modulus changed slightly. The phase structure of the composites was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. Inorganic fillers of whisker-like morphology are considered promising materials, and they have gained significant attention in recent years as a substitute for glass fibers due to their fibrous surface characteristics and extremely low bulk density. This study selected magnesium sulfate whiskers (MSWs) containing crystal water and pure calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) as fillers. They were physically blended with biodegradable polymers PBAT and PBS in a range of 0.1 wt.% to 2 wt.% to form composite materials. The non-isothermal crystallization behavior of the composite materials was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The data indicated that with an increase in whisker content, the crystallization temperature (Tc) of composites increased, and the addition of a small amount of whiskers led to a reduction in the half-crystallization time of the composite materials, indicating the crystallization capacity of the materials has been enhanced to varying degrees. Analysis via POM unveiled a consistent pattern of decreased spherulite size and heightened spherulite count with the introduction of whiskers. This phenomenon is ascribed to the whisker fillers' function as nucleating agents within the polymer matrices, thereby stimulating the crystallization process. Interestingly, the findings suggest that CSWs exert a more significant influence on crystallization than MSWs, likely due to the distinct single fiber morphology of the former filler.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) on the properties and microstructure of cement-based composites. Further, nanosilica (NS) was used as a comparison. The results show that the compressive strength and fracture toughness of cement-based composites increased by 10.3% and 10.2%, respectively, with 2% CSW. The flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, and fracture energy increased by 79.7, 34.8 and 28.7%, respectively, with 1% CSW. With the addition of CSW, shrinkage deformation was aggravated, and the capillary water absorption coefficients were clearly reduced. Compared with NS, CSW-reinforced cement-based composites show better tensile, flexural, and fracture properties and smaller shrinkage deformations and capillary water absorption coefficients. The residual mechanical properties of all groups improve when the treating temperature is lower than 400 °C and decline rapidly when the temperature goes over 600 °C. When treated at 900 °C, the residual mechanical properties are 40% less than those at ambient temperature, with the NS group showing the best performance, followed by the control group and the CSW group. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests show that the addition of CSW improves the microstructure of the matrix. CSW can reinforce and toughen composites by generating ettringite and whisker pullout, whisker breakage, crack bridging, and crack deflection at the microstructure level.

Abstract:The fracture behavior and deformation mechanism of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-octene copolymer (POE)/magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)(2)] ternary composites were investigated. The fracture behavior of the PP/POE/Mg(OH)(2) ternary composites was strongly influenced by the POE content. In the case of brittle fracture, the debonding of filler particles dominated the deformation process. Strong shear yielding of the matrix ligaments between microvoids took place after the brittle-ductile transition. The existence of POE could improve the deformability of the PP matrix and change the debonding manner of the filler particles. The fracture behavior of the PP/POE composites was investigated by the single-edge notch tensile test at 1 mm/s (a low test speed). The introduction of POE led to a decrease in the crack initiation energy and an increase in the crack propagation energy. The improvement in the fracture energy with increasing POE content was dominated by the increase in the crack propagation energy. A morphology analysis of the PP/POE composites demonstrated that a mixture of separation and encapsulation microstructures existed in the matrix. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Halogen-free flame retardant silicone rubber (SR) composites, using magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate (MHSH) whiskers as flame retardant have been prepared by a two-roll mill. Moreover, microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) was used as a synergist. Mechanical tests were performed to determine the tensile strength, elongation at break, and shore hardness of the composites. The morphology of fracture surface was observed by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The results showed MHSH slightly reduced the tensile strength of the composites, but had obvious influence on the elongation at break. Meanwhile, Shore A hardness presented uptrend with increasing MHSH content. The addition of vinyl silicone fluid (VSF) could improve the compatibility of the MHSH whiskers in SR matrix, and therefore improved the mechanical properties of composites. The flammability properties of composites were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 tests, and cone calorimetry experiments. It is found that MHSH whiskers can effectively improve the flame retardancy of SR composites due to the endothermic degradation of MHSH whiskers accompanied with the release of water vapor, and the formation of fibrous magnesia acting as a barrier layer. The incorporation of MRP in SR/MHSH whiskers system had a synergic fire retardant effect in the condensed and gas phase. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated the presence of MRP enhanced thermal stability of the SR/MHSH composites at higher temperature range, and remarkably promoted char residue yield.

Abstract:Aiming to endow the efficient fire safety to epoxy resin (EP), magnesium hydroxide micro-whiskers (mw-MH) as super-reinforcement were incorporated into EP. The thermal kinetics of EP/mw-MH micro-composites were investigated. The limited oxygen index (LOI) of EP with the incorporation of mw-MH reached up to 33.7% greatly improved comparing to 26.3% of pristine EP. The cone calorimeter test (CCT) showed the heat release rate (HRR), smoke production rate (SPR) of the EP/3mw-MH with the addition of 3 wt% mw-MH obviously reduced, as evidenced by the reduction of peak of HRR and SPR for the micro-composites to 58% and 48%, respectively. Moreover, improvements were also observed in total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) of EP/3mw-MH, which were decreased by 29% and 34% at 300 s. Compared with common used industrial magnesium hydroxide (ind-MH), EP/mw-MH micro-composites possessed excellent fire safety performance at the same loading, which was attributed to the jammed network structure. Furthermore, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of EP/mw-MH micro-composites maintained. Finally, further investigation was proposed to explain the flame retardant mechanism, which involved the jammed network structures at internal and compact protective char. The magnesium hydroxide with one-dimensional structure offered an effective method to improve the fire retardancy of polymers.

Study on Suspension Graft Polymerization of MMA onto Nano-sized Basic Magnesium Chloride Whisker Surface in Methanol/Water Disperse Medium

Abstract:The nano-sized basic magnesium chloride whiskers,which were prepared via liquid reaction at the atmospheric pressure with brine and ammonia,were modified with γ-MPS. The nanocomposite particles were synthesized via free radical polymerization,which were initiated by K2S2O8 (KPS),a water-soluble initiator,in ethanol/water mixture. The nanocomposite particles were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray diffraction. The influences of disperse medium and reaction time on the morphology of the whisker were studied. The effect of reaction temperature and time,concentration of initiator and monomer on the graft ratio and graft efficiency were also discussed. The optimum conditions of the graft polymerization of MMA onto nano-sized basic magnesium chloride whisker were determined by orthogonal experiments.

Abstract:The effects of two kinds of macromolecular compatibilizers, poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PE-co-PGMA) and poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PE-co-PMA-co-PGMA), both containing epoxy groups, on the properties of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/magnesium hydroxide (MH) composites were studied in this work. On the basis of the experimental results from the mechanical test, thermal stability analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, both PE-co-PGMA and PE-co-PMA-co-PGMA were demonstrated to be efficient compatibilizers. In order to investigate the compatibilization mechanism, further characterization by particle size and a particle size distribution analyzer, SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) were carried out, respectively. It was found that the epoxy groups on the compatibilizers played a very important role in modification of the LLDPE/MH system. The compatibilizers conglutinated tightly on the surface of MH though ring-open reactions between the epoxy group and hydroxyl of MH; furthermore, the long organic chains of compatibilizers entwisted with LLDPE through van der Waals force. The fracture morphology observation of LLDPE/MH composites also showed that MH particles were closely united with polymer matrix through the compatibilizers. Therefore, the compatibility between MH and LLDPE was enhanced, which improved the final performances of the LLDPE/MH composites further.

Abstract:In this study, three cationic surfactants (hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, hexadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, and octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride) were used to modify montmorillonite and polyethylene (PE)/maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MAH)/organic-montmorillonite (Org-MMT) nano-composites, prepared by two blending processes (direct-melt blending and solution blending). X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the intercalation behavior and microstructure of composites. Mechanical properties were also tested. It was found that the intercalation effect of PE/PE-g-MAH/Org-MMT could be enhanced by increasing the content of PE-g-MMT, using the silicate modified by a cationic surfactant with a benzyl group or long alkyl chain, adopting the solution-blending method or using high-density polyethylene as matrix. The degree of crystallinity of composites and the crystalline thickness perpendicular to the crystalline plane [like (110) and (200)] decreased with increasing amounts of PE-g-MAH and, under certain prescription, the crystalline thickness of the composite made by the solution method was much smaller than that made by direct-melt blending. This clearly showed that Org-MMT and PE-g-MAH had a heterogeneous nucleation effect on crystallization of PE from the melt, resulting in a decrease of crystalline thickness, and the heterogeneous nucleation effect was more evident in the nanocomposite made by the solution-blending method than in that made by the direct-melt intercalation process. The tensile strength initially increased and then decreased with increasing contents of PE-g-MAH. The maximum value in tensile strength (23.3 MPa) was achieved when the concentration of PE-g-MAH was 6 wt %. The impact strength increased concomitantly with the content of PE-g-MAH; it was 122.2 J/m when the concentration of PE-g-MAH was 9 wt %. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The designed structures and morphologies of the modified calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers (MCSHWs) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Three types of MCSHW/gypsum composites were prepared using MCSHWs as reinforcers. The physical, mechanical, and microscopic properties of the MCSHW/gypsum composites were studied. The surfaces of CSHWs modified by C 6 H 9 O 7 Na were considerably coarsened, which improved the interfacial properties of the MCSHW/gypsum composites. The initial and final setting times of the three types of MCSHW/gypsum composites exhibited decreasing trends, while the porosities decreased and then increased with the increase in the MCSHW content. The optimal flexural and compressive strengths of MCSHW/flue gas desulfurization gypsum composites were 5.41 and 9.37 MPa, respectively, when the MCSHW content was 10 wt%. The MCSHWs not only filled the material voids and reduced the porosity, but also connected the structural defects and prevented the development of cracks, effectively improving the mechanical properties of the MCSHW/flue gas desulfurization gypsum composites.
