Abstract:Purpose – Academic and industrial researches on nanoscale flows and heat transfers are an area of increasing global interest, where fascinating phenomena are always observed, e.g. admirable water or air permeation and remarkable thermal conductivity. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the phenomena by the fractional calculus. Design/methodology/approach – This paper begins with the continuum assumption in conventional theories, and then the fractional Gauss’ divergence theorems are used to derive fractional differential equations in fractal media. Fractional derivatives are introduced heuristically by the variational iteration method, and fractal derivatives are explained geometrically. Some effective analytical approaches to fractional differential equations, e.g. the variational iteration method, the homotopy perturbation method and the fractional complex transform, are outlined and the main solution processes are given. Findings – Heat conduction in silk cocoon and ground water flow are modeled by the local fractional calculus, the solutions can explain well experimental observations. Originality/value – Particular attention is paid throughout the paper to giving an intuitive grasp for fractional calculus. Most cited references are within last five years, catching the most frontier of the research. Some ideas on this review paper are first appeared.

Abstract:A fractional diffusion equation based on Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives is solved exactly. The initial values are given as fractional integrals. The solution is obtained in terms of $H$-functions. It differs from the known solution of fractional diffusion equations based on fractional integrals. The solution of fractional diffusion based on a Riemann-Liouville fractional time derivative does not admit a probabilistic interpretation in contrast with fractional diffusion based on fractional integrals. While the fractional initial value problem is well defined and the solution finite at all times its values for $t\to 0$ are divergent.

Abstract:This paper presents the numerical solution of the heat conduction model with a fractional derivative of the Riemann–Liouville type with respect to the spatial variable. The considered mathematical model assumes the dependence on temperature of the material parameters (such as specific heat, density, and thermal conductivity) of the model. In the paper, the boundary conditions of the first and second types are considered. If the heat flux equal to zero is assumed on the left boundary, then the thermal symmetry is obtained, which results in a simplification of the problem and the possibility of considering only half the area. The numerical examples presented in the paper illustrate the effectiveness and convergence of the discussed computational method.

Abstract:By introducing the fractional derivative in the sense of Caputo and combining the pretreatment technique to deal with long nonlinear items, the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is proposed for solving the time-fractional Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV equation and coupled MKdV equation. The presented method is a numerical method based on the generalized Taylor series expansion which constructs an analytical solution in the form of a polynomial. The numerical results show that the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is very effective for the fractional coupled equations.

Abstract:Fractional derivatives play a very important role in modeling physical phenomena involving long-range correlation effects. However, they raise challenges of computational cost and memory storage requirements when solved using current well developed numerical methods. In this paper, the differential operator multiplication method is proposed to address the issues by considering a reaction–advection–diffusion equation with a fractional derivative in time. The linear fractional differential equation is transformed into an integer order differential equation by the proposed method, which can fundamentally fix the aforementioned issues for select fractional differential equations. In such a transform, special attention should be paid to the initial conditions for the resulting differential equation of higher integer order. Through numerical experiments, we verify the proposed method for both fractional ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations.

Abstract:A significant problem to study is how the fractional operators and physical structures may be interrelated and interconnected. The current model study reports the fractional time-dependent viscous, electric conductive fluid between two permeable infinitely large walls. The flow is driven by the mutual actions of imposed thermal buoyancy, pressure gradient, and transverse magnetic field of uniform strength. The suction and injection of the fluid take place at the right and left walls respectively. Transformations are used to convert the physical model into equivalent fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs). The finite difference computational code based on three difference fractional operators is developed to seek the behavior of modeled problem. The analysis of the model and code endorsement is provided through set of graphical plots and tabular form. It is noted that an increment into the Hartmann and Reynolds number causes a dropped pattern of the velocity while the drop is more substantial for the smaller choices of fractional parameters. Higher choices of heat source, thermal radiation, Ecker, pressure gradient and magnetic parameters cause an enhanced behavior of the thermal profile. The smaller values caused a slight increment on the thermal layer as higher choices of the fractional parameters. However, the patterns of the thermal and velocity layers are found clearer while using the ABC and CF fractional operators compared with the CC idea of fractional derivative.

Abstract:<p>Under investigation in this letter is a time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation which usually appears in mathematics physics, integrable system, fluid mechanics and nonlinear areas, by means of applying the fractional symmetry group method with the sense of Riemann–Liouville (R-L)fractional derivative. First of all, we use the fractional symmetry group method to obtain symmetries of the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation. Second, according to the above find symmetries, this equation can be reduced to a fractional ordinary differential equation. Moreover, invariant solutions of the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation are yielded. Finally, with the aid of the Ibragimov theorem, the conservation laws are also find to the time fractional nonlinear heat conduction equation. These new results are an effective complement to existing knowledge.</p>

Numerical Solutions of Fractional Advection–diffusion Equations with a Kind of New Generalized Fractional Derivative

Abstract:In the current paper, the numerical solutions for a class of fractional advection–diffusion equations with a kind of new generalized time-fractional derivative proposed last year are discussed in a bounded domain. The fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. The numerical solutions are obtained by using the finite difference method. The stability of numerical scheme is also investigated. Numerical examples are solved with different fractional orders and step sizes, which illustrate that the numerical scheme is stable, simple and effective for solving the generalized advection–diffusion equations. The order of convergence of the numerical scheme is evaluated numerically, and the first-order convergence rate has been observed.

Abstract:Purpose The main aim of this paper is to investigate the fractional coupled nonlinear Helmholtz equation by two new analytical methods. Design/methodology/approach This article takes an inaugural look at the fractional coupled nonlinear Helmholtz equation by using the conformable derivative. It successfully finds new fractional periodic solutions and solitary wave solutions by employing methods such as the fractional method and the fractional simple equation method. The dynamics of these fractional periodic solutions and solitary wave solutions are then graphically represented in 3D with appropriate parameters and fractal dimensions. This research contributes to a deeper comprehension and detailed exploration of the dynamics involved in high dimensional solitary wave propagation. Findings The proposed two mathematical approaches are simple and efficient to solve fractional evolution equations. Originality/value The fractional coupled nonlinear Helmholtz equation is described by using the conformable derivative for the first time. The obtained fractional periodic solutions and solitary wave solutions are completely new.

Abstract:Fractional variational approach has gained much attention in recent years. There are famous fractional derivatives such as Caputo derivative, Riesz derivative and Riemann-Liouville derivative. Several versions of fractional variational principles are proposed. However, it becomes difficult to apply the existing fractional variational theories to fractional differential models, due to the definitions of fractional variational derivatives which not only contain the left fractional derivatives but also appear right ones. In this paper, a new definition of fractional variational derivative is introduced by using a modified Riemann-Liouville derivative and the fractional Euler-Lagrange principle is established for fractional partial differential equations.

Abstract:In the present paper, we utilized fractional reduced differential transform method (FRDTM) to get the better optimal solution of space-time fractional order heat-like and wave-like partial differential equations (PDEs). One of the distinguishing practical features of this technique is its implementation on space-time fractional order linear and nonlinear PDEs without using discretization and linearization. The advantage of this method to other existing methods such as HAM, HPM etc. is that no prescribed assumptions are required, and the huge computational exertion is reduced and round-off errors are also evaded. To show the capability, usefulness and consistency of the proposed scheme, a few examples have been given to enlightening its efficiency, accuracy and simplicity. Hence, it is a powerful method for solving general space-time fractional order PDEs used in the field of engineering, physics and other disciplines.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a fast and linearized finite difference method to solve the nonlinear time-fractional wave equation with multi fractional orders. We first propose a discretization to the multi-term Caputo derivative based on the recently established fast L 2-1 σ formula and a weighted approach. Then we apply the discretization to construct a fully fast linearized discrete scheme for the nonlinear problem under consideration. The nonlinear term, which just fulfills the Lipschitz condition, will be evaluated on the previous time level. Therefore only linear systems are needed to be solved for obtaining numerical solutions. The proposed scheme is shown to have second-order unconditional convergence with respect to the discrete H 1-norm. The proposed fast linearized method can be directly extended to solve the nonlinear distributed-order time-fractional wave problem. Numerical examples are provided to justify the efficiency.
Fractional Helmholtz and fractional wave equations with Riesz-Feller and generalized Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to derive analytical solutions of fractional order Laplace, Poisson and Helmholtz equations in two variables derived from the corresponding standard equations in two dimensions by replacing the integer order partial derivatives with fractional Riesz-Feller derivative and generalized Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative recently defined by Hilfer. The Fourier-Laplace transform method is employed to obtain the solutions in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions, Fox $H$-function and an integral operator containing a Mittag-Leffler function in the kernel. Results for fractional wave equation are presented as well. Some interesting special cases of these equations are considered. Asymptotic behavior and series representation of solutions are analyzed in detail. Many previously obtained results can be derived as special cases of those presented in this paper.

Abstract:It is essential for mathematicians, physicists, and engineers to construct fractional mathematical models for specific phenomena and develop numerical or analytical solutions for these models. In this work, we implement the natural decomposition approach with nonsingular kernel derivatives to investigate the solution of nonlinear fractional forced Korteweg–de Vries (FF-KdV) equation. We first investigate the FF-KdV equation under the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative. The similar equations are then examined using the Atangana–Baleanu derivative. This approach combines the decomposition method with the Natural transform method. The series solution of the suggested equations is thus obtained using the natural transform. The key benefit of this novel approximate-analytical approach is that it may provide an analytical solution for the FF-KdV problem in the form of convergent series with simple computations. For each equation, three unique situations are chosen to demonstrate and test the viability of the proposed method. To guarantee the competence and dependability of the proposed method, the nature for various values of the Froude number Fr have been provided. The present approach is also used to calculate solutions at various fractional orders. The approximate series solution’s behavior for various fractional orders has been graphically displayed. The outcomes demonstrate that the methodology is simple to use and reliable when applied to numerous fractional differential equations.
