Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent of AgBr-AgBr/CTAB nano materials, which was synthesized via Tollen's reagent with the aid of hexadecyltrimethy ammonium bromide (CTAB), showed an excellent high affinity to anions and was used for removal of organic dyes in aqueous solutions. The synthesized AgBr-AgBr/CTAB was thoroughly characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, TGA, DLS as well as zeta potential measurements. The adsorption property and capacity of AgBr-AgBr/CTAB for organic dyes were evaluated using methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), acid red 18 (AR-18), orange G (OG), indigo carmine (IC), and methyl orange (MO) as models. The adsorption capacity of AgBr-AgBr/CTAB complex toward four anionic dyes OG, AR-18, IC, and MO solutions was 87.43 +/- 2.03 mg g(-1), 205.89 +/- 2.12 mg g(-1), 140.42 +/- 2.13 mg g(-1), and 104.6 +/- 1.59 mg g(-1), respectively. On the other hand, this adsorbent exhibited little adsorption ability toward two cationic dyes, MB (2.99 +/- 0.40 mg g(-1)) and RhB (2.96 +/- 0.60 mg g(-1)). Interestingly, AgBr-AgBr/CTAB could be applied to efficiently adsorb anionic dyes from binary cationic-anionic dye systems with a high separation factor, and such adsorbent could be reused at least 5 times with adsorption capacities above 95%. The removal of anionic dyes followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that anionic dyes were monolayerly adsorbed on our as-prepared materials. To further elucidate the adsorption mechanism, the theoretical calculation based on first-principles was also provided. The results suggested R-SO3- groups were the active sites and electrostatic attraction was the dominating contribution for the adsorption of anionic dyes.

Abstract:A new coordination polymeric chains modified polyoxometalate, H3K2[Ag5(DTB)5][SiW12O40]2·Cl2·8H2O (1) {DTB = 1,4-di(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)benzene}, has been successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the Keggin POM cluster is modified by {Ag(DTB)}n chains in an unusually [2+4] asymmetrical mode resulting in a 2D double layer structure. By connection of K cations and π···π interactions between adjacent {Ag(DTB)}n coordination polymeric chains, the 2D structure extends to a 3D structure. In addition, crystal 1 can be used as a packing material for the highly selective adsorption and separation cationic dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) against with methyl orange (MO) anionic dyes. The adsorption of a series of cationic organic dyes experiment demonstrated that this process is highly related to the sizes of organic dyes.

Abstract:A silver(I) coordination polymer, [Ag(L)(HNTP)](n) (1) (L = 1,4-bis(5,6-dimethylbenzimidazol-1-yl)butane, H2NTP = 2-nitroterephthalic acid) was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. 1 is a 1D linear chain which is further extended into a 3D supramolecular framework by hydrogen bond interactions. 1 exhibits highly sensitivity for detecting Cu2+ ion. 1 also presents high photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO).

Abstract:Three conjugated poly(tetraphenylethene)s grafted with dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) groups, P-O, P-M and P-P, have been synthesized via Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization, in which the tetraphenylethene (TPE) units are connected at the ortho, meta and para positions, respectively. These conjugated polymers inherit the aggregation-induced emission feature of the TPE unit and thus their emission intensities increased significantly in the THF-water mixture solvents. The enhanced emission intensities highly depend on the connection modes of the TPE units and are in the order of P-O < P-M < P-P. Furthermore, the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) feature can be activated by the acid-base-controlled complexation of DB24C8 groups with a dibenzylammonium chloride based molecule, protonated C12-2. The reduplicative complexation induces step-by-step emission enhancements together with morphological transitions from micellar to vesicular in the systems of P-O/C12-2 and P-M/C12-2. In the case of P- P/C12-2, of note is that the complexation not only leads to an AIEE feature but also a significant blue shift of the emission band from 515 to 483 nm. Both of these are really reversible under the acid-base-controlled condition. These polymer materials are of great importance for their potential application in the fields of optoelectronic devices and chemical and biomedical sensors.
Selective Adsorption and Separation of Organic Dyes by Poly(acrylic Acid) Hydrogels Formed with Spherical Polymer Brushes and Chitosan

Abstract:Direct discharge of industry organic dyes has caused serious environmental pollution. In this study, a series of double network poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogels were fabricated with spherical polymer brushes (SPBs) and chitosan (CS) as crosslinker. Neutral spherical polyelectrolyte brushes of polystyrene–poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM@PS) in which poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) arms were grafted on polystyrene (PS) nanospheres, were employed as macro-crosslinkers. The innumerable hydrogen bonds both between the highly entangled PAA chains and between PNIPAM and the PAA chains composed the first network of the hydrogels. The electrostatic interactions between CS and the PAA chains formed the second network of the hydrogels. These double network hydrogels, named PNIPAM@PS/CS/PAA, achieve good compressive performance and a low swell ratio because of their compact structure through plentiful hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The hydrogel could absorb cationic dyes from water with high separation efficiency and selectivity due to the electrostatic interaction between the carboxy groups and dye molecules. The adsorption process fitted a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model very well. Moreover, the hydrogel can separate cationic dyes from mixed dye solutions through electrostatic interactions. After being loaded with silver nanoparticles, the obtained silver@hydrogel exhibited a good capacity for the photocatalytic degradation towards different dyes. The hydrogels are promising for dye-containing wastewater treatment.
Penta-nuclear [Ag 5 I 6 ] Cluster-Based Photochromic Hybrid: Synthesis, Structure, Dye Sorption, and Separation

Abstract:An [Ag5I6] cluster-based coordination polymer has been successfully constructed with the assistance of a polydentate organic amine hexamethylenetetramine (Hmta) as the linker, [NH4][Ag5I6(Hmta)] (1). Compound 1 features an anionic 2D bilayer network wherein the combination of Ag(I) with I– and N atom gives rise to a novel [Ag5I6] secondary building unit and further generates the final architecture with free NH4 + being located in the space of the framework. Interestingly, compound 1 exhibits a cation exchange behavior which can efficiently capture and separate methylene blue (MB) in a binary mixture of dye solution. Desorption experiments have been performed, showing that the MB molecules in dye-loaded samples can be readily discharged when triggered by Na+. Moreover, reversible photochromism is observed for solid 1, displaying a rapid color response to light illumination.

Abstract:A 2D anionic Cd-based coordination host was constructed from the linkage of the metal ions and 6-sulfonicotinic acid (SNA, in situ generated from the breaking of disulfide bond in 6,6'-dithiodinicotinic acid) whose interior spaces are occupied with cationic [(CH3)(2)NH2](+) guests. The compound exhibits an interesting ion-exchange behavior for both encapsulation of lanthanide (Ln) ions and organic dye. Through the fixation of Ln(3+) within the host, the designed composite can be endowed with high photoluminescence property. Moreover, the free cations could be readily substituted by methylene blue (MB), with more than 90% of MB (10(-5) M) being selectively absorbed after 12 h, making the title compound to be a great medium for dye adsorption and separation.

Abstract:Coordination polymers are multidimensional materials that can be utilized as photocatalytic materials for photodegradation of aromatic dyes. Herein, a new d10-configuration based Ag(I) supramolecular coordination polymer (CP) having formula {[Ag3(bib)2]·(H3L)2} (1) has been synthesized solvothermally using 1,3-bis(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzene (H4L) and 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene) (bib) ligands. The diimidazole ligand (bib) coordinates with Ag(I) where metal center adopts bi-coordinate linear-geometry to form cationic 1D coordinate chain, which is wrapped between 2D hydrogen-bonded organic plane to engender 3D suramolecular network. The CP is used as photocatalyst for the safe and sustainable decomposition of aromatic dyes. The percentage decomposition of dyes methylene orange (MO), Rhodamine B (Rh B), methylene blue (MB) and basic green (BG) are 5.44%, 61.38%, 63.75% and 83.31%, respectively under UV light irradiation. The plausible pathway using which the CP executed the decomposition of dyes proposed by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Through adjusting the different ligands and incorporating 4, 4'-bipyridine, two novel POM-based inorganic-organic hybrid compounds {[(Cu·L1'·(4, 4'-bpy)2·2H2O)]·(β-Mo8O26)}n (1) and {[Cu·L2'·(4, 4'-bpy)]·[Cu·L2'·(β-Mo8O26)]·4H2O}n (2) [4, 4'-bpy = 4, 4'-bipyridine, L1'=1, 4-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-butane, L2'=1, 6-bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-hexane] have been synthesized under different hydrothermal conditions. The two compounds were assembled by 4, 4'-bpy, CuCl2, carboxyl ligands from in-situ hydrolysis of cyano group and POM clusters, which are rarely observed in POM-based inorganic-organic hybrid compounds. Compounds 1-2 were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrum (IR), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Compounds 1-2 have been studied for removal of organic dyes such as methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB).

Abstract:One coordination polymer [Zn-2(L)(2)(bpe)(2)(H2O)(2)] (1) (L = 4,4'-((1,2-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(oxy)) dibenzoic acid; bpe = (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethene) was prepared and structurally determined. Compound 1 has a chain structure in which its pair of bpe ligands is arranged in a head-to-tail manner with their C=C bonds being close enough for a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. Upon exposure to UV light, compound 1 undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) [2 + 2] photodimerization to generate one 2D coordination polymer [Zn(L)(rctt-tpcb)(0.5)(H2O)] (1a) (rctt (regio cis, trans, trans)-tpcb = tetrakis-(4-pyridyl)cyclobutane). The tpcb ligands in the crystals of 1a show an intriguing in situ thermal isomerisation. The nanospheres of 1 can be obtained by recrystallization in DMSO/alcohol. The nanospheres of 1a can also be readily produced from the corresponding nanospheres of 1 by the photocyclodimerization method. Compared with those of 1a, the nanospheres of 1 display highly selective sensing of Fe3+ ions over mixed metal ions through fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the nanospheres of 1a can rapidly adsorb CR (congo red), MB (methylene blue) or RhB (rhodamine B) over MO (methyl orange) from aqueous solutions. This work offers a new photoinduced post-synthetic method for the synthesis of multifunctional MOFs, which show luminescence sensing of Fe3+ ions and dye adsorption properties.

Abstract:Two new inorganic-organic hybrid complexes, namely, {[Co-4(L)(2)(HCOO)(2)(OH)(2)][SiO4(W3O9)(4)]}center dot 6DMF center dot 5H(2)O (1) and {[Zn-4(L)(2)(HCOO)(2)(OH)(2)][SiO4(W3O9)(4)]}center dot 6DMF center dot 5H(2)O (2), have been solvothermally prepared by using a new methyl imidazole functionalized resorcin[4]arene (L), polyoxometalate (POM), and metal cation. Isostructural 1 and 2 feature porous supramolecular architectures and represent an unusual example of a successful combination of resorcin[4]arenes with polyoxometalates. Remarkably, selective adsorptions for organic dyes were studied by using 1 and 2 as adsorbents. Moreover, their electrocatalytic activities for the oxidation of ascorbic acid and reduction of NaBrO3 were also studied.

Abstract:Abstract A luminescent Pr3+-coordination polymer based on functional linear tetrazole-carboxylic acid and an auxiliary ligand, {[Pr(TBCA)(BPA)·2H2O]}n (1) (HTBCA = 4′-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid, H2BPA = 2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by single crystal XRD, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis reveals that 1 is a 1D coordination polymer with chains approximately parallel to the a-axis, linked by H-bonding interactions to form a 3-D arrangement. The uptake results for six dyes with different size and different charges revealed that 1 can adsorb neutral red and hardly adsorb the other dyes. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In this study, we report four coordination polymers based on di-9,10-(pyridine-4-yl)-anthracene (dpa). 1 and 2 are similar 2-fold interpenetrating pcu networks built by Co2+, dpa and dicarboxylate ligands of different lengths, and the porosities and pore sizes of the interpenetrated frameworks were adjusted. 1 contains 1D channels of a cross-section of 3.7 x 3.7 angstrom and exhibits very high selectivity in adsorbing CO2 over N-2. The channels in 2 are larger (5.1 x 5.1 angstrom) but unstable upon removing solvent guests. 3, [Cd(dpa)(2)(Cl)(2)](n)center dot 2nDMF, contains layer structures constructed by dpa, Cd2+ and Cl- atoms. 4, [Cd(dpa)(Cl)(2)(H2O)(2)](n), contains polymeric chains with Cd2+ atoms linked by dpa ligands. 3 and 4 showed strong fluorescent emissions, and mixed matrix membranes prepared based on 3 or 4 showed very high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Cr2O72- in water.

Abstract:One new anionic Coordination Polymer, namely [Co(H2O)6]2+·[Co3(bptc)2(H2O)10]2−·3H2O (1), where H4bptc=3,3′,5,5′-biphenyltetracarboxylate, has been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized. In compound 1, bptc4− as tridentate ligands connect the Co2+ cations to form a 2D layer with 1D pseudo channels encapsulation of [Co(H2O)6]2+ guest. In addition, their adsorption activities for organic dyes were investigated in aqueous solution. The results suggested that the anionic complex 1 show rapid and selective adsorption of cationic dyes for Neutral red, Methylene blue.

Abstract:Azobenzene has become a ubiquitous component of functional molecules and polymeric materials because of the light-induced trans-cis isomerization of the diazene group. In contrast, there are very few applications utilizing azobenzene luminescence, since the excitation energy typically dissipates via nonradiative pathways. Inspired by our earlier studies with 2,2'-bis[N,N'-(2-pyridyl)methyl]diaminoazobenzene (AzoAMoP) and related compounds, we investigated a series of five aminoazobenzene derivatives and their corresponding silver complexes. Four of the aminoazobenzene ligands, which exhibit no emission under ambient conditions, form silver coordination polymers that are luminescent at room temperature. AzoAEpP (2,2'-bis[N,N'-(4-pyridyl)ethyl]diaminoazobenzene) assembles into a three-dimensional coordination polymer (AgAAEpP) that undergoes a reversible loss of emission upon the addition of metal-coordinating analytes such as pyridine. The switching behavior is consistent with the disassembly and reassembly of the coordination polymer driven by displacement of the aminoazobenzene ligands by coordinating analytes.

P1 provided high sensitivity and selectivity to silver ions: color change from green to brown red and fluorescent emission quenching, which can be observed by naked eye, even in the presence of interference cations. However, P2 with the similar polymer backbone to P1 showed no absorption and fluorescence changes toward any cations. Therefore, the DPQ units in P1 exhibited a key role for the selective recognition of Ag+, which was further confirmed by the 1H NMR titration, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical studies. These results not only imply that DPQ based conjugated polymer is a promising probe of Ag+ ions but also afford a good guidance to design effective polymer sensors in future.
A New Cd(II)-Based Coordination Polymer for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Organic Dyes

Abstract:Coordination polymers (CPs) are a diverse class of multi-dimensional compounds that show promise as photocatalysts for degrading dyes in polluted water. Herein, a new 1D Cd(II)-based coordination polymer with the formula [Cd(bpyp)(nba)2] (1) (bpyp = 2,5-bis(pyrid-4-yl)pyridine and Hnba = 4-nitrobenzoic acid) is synthesized and characterized. In 1, the two carboxyl groups of two different nba− ligands show μ2-η1:η1 and μ1-η1:η1 coordination modes to connect the CdII centers and sit on either side of the chain along the b direction. The produced CP 1 was utilized as the photocatalyst in the process of the photodegradation of methyl blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB), and methyl violet (MV) dyes when exposed to UV light. The photocatalytic degradation activities of CP 1 were analyzed, and the results suggest that it exhibits an extraordinary efficiency in the degradation of MB, MV, MO, and RhB. RhB has a 95.52% efficiency of degradation, whereas MV has a 58.92% efficiency, MO has 35.44%, and MB has 29.24%. The photodecomposition of dyes is catalyzed mostly by •O2− and •OH−, as shown by research involving the trapping of radicals.
