Abstract:The novel chelating resin Dowex M-4195 was selected and applied to investigate the static adsorption properties and interaction nature toward aqueous Cu(II) from acid solutions. The isotherm data could be well described by Langmuir model, and the kinetic curves could be successfully fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation. In strong acid solutions at the pH-value of 2, the obtained adsorption capacity was 1.592mmol/g, about 50% more than that at the higher pH-value of 5. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) onto Dowex M-4195, especially at the pH-value of 2, were further explored using the Density-Functional-Theory. The theoretical calculations confirmed the three nitrogen atoms would be all involved in the coordination with tridentate complex and thus the two five-member ring structure could be achieved. Additionally, the XPS spectra testified the involvement of nitrogen atoms, which told the coordination ratio might be 1:1. Whereas, in weak acidic solutions at the pH value of 5, the ion exchange mechanism involving the protonated pyridine of solid matrix and Cu(II) was dominant. Consequently, high efficient removal of Cu(II) especially from strong acidic solutions could be achieved, an indication of a potential and preponderant new method to recover heavy metals from acidic effluents without sufficient neutralization pretreatment.

Abstract:The development of chromate-based post-treatment methods has been limited mainly due to their toxicity, thus it is essential to explore environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors for electrolytic copper foil. Herein, we evaluated three tetrazolium compounds (tetrazolium, 5-methyl-tetrazolium, and 5-amino-tetrazolium) as potential corrosion inhibitors for electrolytic copper foil, and explored their adsorption behavior onto the copper foil surface and their efficiency in inhibiting corrosion when exposed to a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Density functional theory calculations provide insights into the relationship between the molecular structure of the inhibitors and their corrosion inhibition efficiency. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the adsorption behavior of these inhibitors on copper surfaces under solvation conditions. Notably, the 5-amino-tetrazolium molecule exhibits the most stable chemisorption on the Cu(1 1 1) surface. Finally, both electrochemical tests and antioxidation experiments confirm that ATZ is the most effective corrosion inhibitor with a corrosion inhibition efficiency ( η ) of 93.09%, consistent with theoretical predictions. This study highlights the potential application of the tetrazolium derivative 5-amino-tetrazolium in environmentally friendly and chromium-free post-treatment of electrolytic copper foil surfaces.

Abstract:A numerical method considering both corrosion kinetics and ion transport is proposed to investigate the distribution of current and chloride ions in a cathodic protection system. The impact of impressed current density, concrete resistivity, chloride ion concentration, rebar arrangement, anode arrangement and thickness of protective layer on the current and ion distribution is discussed. Results show that the rebars located closest to anode exhibit the largest current and lowest chloride ion concentration. The utilization of multiple external anodes proves to be an effective means to enhance the cathodic protection’s effect, but it impairs the ability of removing chloride ions.

Abstract:This study employed a combined experimental and theoretical approach to investigate the synergistic corrosion inhibition and mechanism of l-cysteine (CYB)-modified Schiff bases (Schiff bases) and decanoic acid (HC10) as environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors on corroded bronze in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Surface and electrochemical analysis techniques were used to assess the inhibitor effectiveness, permeability and quantify solution reinforcement effect through compressive testing. Additionally, quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics simulations (MD), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to validate the mechanism of synergistic corrosion inhibition. The results indicate that the two molecules cooperate to impede corrosion via competitive adsorption, while also displaying high permeability and reinforcement properties.

Abstract:Copper's potential in various applications is constrained due to environmental degradation, particularly in high-salinity environments, representing a sustainability concern. Herein, two novel hydroquinazolinones, namely 1-((4-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methyl)-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one (DQ-H) and 1-((4-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methyl)-2-(p-tolyl)-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one (DQ-CH 3 ), were analyzed for their ability to inhibit copper corrosion in a 3.5 % NaCl solution. The compounds, characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, were evaluated via potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and weight loss measurements. Comprehensive analyses utilizing scanning electron microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared, and UV–vis spectroscopy have revealed insights into the surface morphology and the interactive nature of inhibitor molecules with the copper surface. Our findings highlight the formation of a strong, sustainable inhibitor film on the copper surface due to the addition of hydroquinazolinones, thereby exhibiting an enhanced polarization resistance and decreased double-layer capacitance. Both DQ-H and DQ-CH 3 demonstrated a considerable inhibition effect, with efficiencies of 92 % and 94 % respectively, illustrating their potential for sustainable copper protection. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicated a significant increase in polarization resistance from 605.7 (blank) to 9403 and 12861 Ω cm 2 , after the addition of DQ-H and DQ-CH3, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption attributes of the compounds on the Cu(1 1 1) surface were examined using first-principles density functional theory simulation, revealing several covalent bonds formation. Our work aims to contribute to sustainability efforts in materials science by offering a corrosion-protective solution that is less harmful to the environment and more efficient in preserving copper's durability, particularly in saline environments.

Abstract:Antifouling properties are crucial for enhancing the longevity and functionality of biomedical implants, drug delivery systems, and biosensors. Zwitterionic polymers are renowned for their exceptional surface hydration and charge neutrality, which effectively resist biomolecular adsorption and protein attachment. We propose an innovative approach to develop zwitterion-like antifouling surfaces by chelating divalent cations with anionic poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films, specifically PEDOT-PO4 and PEDOT-COOH. The chelation behavior of these films was systematically evaluated using Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ ions. Divalent ions, particularly Ca2+ and Mg2+, exhibit a strong affinity for the anionic groups, leading to significant antifouling properties. These modified surfaces effectively repelled both negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) and positively charged lysozyme (LYZ) proteins across various pH environments. This study offers valuable insights into the antifouling characteristics of charged surfaces, enhancing our understanding of how ion-mediated surface modifications influence protein adsorption and interactions.
Uniform, Anticorrosive, and Antiabrasive Coatings on Metallic Surfaces for Cation-Metal and Cation-π Interactions

Abstract:Metals are widely used, from daily life to modern industry. Great efforts have been made to protect the metals with various coatings. However, the well-known conventional electrochemical corrosion induced by cations and the ubiquitous nature of the coffee-ring effect make these processes very difficult. Here, a scheme by two bridges of cations and ethylenediamine (EDA) is proposed to overcome the coffee-ring effect and electrochemical corrosion and experimentally achieve uniform, anticorrosive, and antiabrasive coatings on metallic surfaces. Anticorrosive capability reaches about 26 times higher than that without cation-controlled coatings at 12 h in extremely acidic, high-temperature, and high-humidity conditions and still enhances to 2.7 times over a week. Antiabrasive capability also reaches 2.5 times. Theoretical calculations show that the suspended materials are uniformly adsorbed on the surface mediated by complexed cations through strong cation-metal and cation-π interactions. Notably, the well-known conventional electrochemical corrosion induced by cations is avoided by EDA to control cations solubility in different coating processes. These findings provide a new efficient, cost-effective, facile, and scalable method to fabricate protective coatings on metallic materials and a methodology to study metallic nanostructures in solutions, benefitting practical applications including coatings, printing, dyeing, electrochemical protection, and biosensors.

Abstract:This study developed a method to realise triple resistant effects of new branched molecules for copper surface in aqueous solution. The adsorption of the studied molecules on copper surface was analysed. The results demonstrate that the copper surface adsorbed by the studied molecules showed super resistance effects on Chlorella sp., Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The dramatic corrosive suppression of the branched compounds on copper in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution was revealed by the potentiodynamic polarisation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at 298 K. By establishing a simple chemical strategy to construct the branched molecules, the multiple inhibition properties of the target molecular adsorption layers on copper can be controlled on the molecular scale.

Abstract:Optimizing the antibacterial effectiveness of copper ions while reducing environmental and cellular toxicity is essential for public health. A copper chelate, named PAI-Cu, is skillfully created using a specially designed carboxyl copolymer (a combination of acrylic and itaconic acids) with copper ions. PAI-Cu demonstrates a broad-spectrum antibacterial capability both in vitro and in vivo , without causing obvious cytotoxic effects. When compared to free copper ions, PAI-Cu displays markedly enhanced antibacterial potency, being about 35 times more effective against Escherichia coli and 16 times more effective against Staphylococcus aureus . Moreover, Gaussian and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) analyses reveal that Cu+ ions can remain stable in the carboxyl compound's aqueous environment. Thus, the superior antibacterial performance of PAI-Cu largely stems from its modulation of copper ions between mono- and divalent states within the Cu-carboxyl chelates, especially via the carboxyl ligand. This modulation leads to the generation of reactive oxygen species ( ̇OH), which is pivotal in bacterial eradication. This research offers a cost-effective strategy for amplifying the antibacterial properties of Cu ions, paving new paths for utilizing copper ions in advanced antibacterial applications.

Abstract:Synergistic implementation of corrosion inhibitors is an efficient and economic method for metal protection. The adsorption dynamics and inhibition behavior of 2-phenyl imidazoline (2-PI) and benzotriazole (BTA) are investigated in atmospheric and aqueous environments by electrochemical and quartz crystal microbalance sensors. Moreover, their synergistic mechanisms are illustrated from molecule scales by theoretical calculations. Electrochemical tests show that 2-PI and BTA exhibit promising synergistic effects on the corrosion of copper with inhibition efficiency up to 99.1% in 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution and 94.1% in the atmosphere, respectively. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of inhibitors on copper obey a pseudo-first-order kinetic model characteristic of exponential damping. Quantum chemical and molecule dynamic calculations also suggest that there exists an intermolecular interaction between 2-PI and BTA molecules in a parallel adsorption manner when they are co-adsorbed on the surface of copper.

Abstract:Owing to its high thermal and electrical conductivities, its ductility and its overall non-toxicity<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR3">3</a>, copper is widely used in daily applications and in industry, particularly in anti-oxidation technologies. However, many widespread anti-oxidation techniques, such as alloying and electroplating<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR2">2</a>, often degrade some physical properties (for example, thermal and electrical conductivities and colour) and introduce harmful elements such as chromium and nickel. Although efforts have been made to develop surface passivation technologies using organic molecules, inorganic materials or carbon-based materials as oxidation inhibitors<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR12">12</a>, their large-scale application has had limited success. We have previously reported the solvothermal synthesis of highly air-stable copper nanosheets using formate as a reducing agent<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2783-x#ref-CR13">13</a>. Here we report that a solvothermal treatment of copper in the presence of sodium formate leads to crystallographic reconstruction of the copper surface and formation of an ultrathin surface coordination layer. We reveal that the surface modification does not affect the electrical or thermal conductivities of the bulk copper, but introduces high oxidation resistance in air, salt spray and alkaline conditions. We also develop a rapid room-temperature electrochemical synthesis protocol, with the resulting materials demonstrating similarly strong passivation performance. We further improve the oxidation resistance of the copper surfaces by introducing alkanethiol ligands to coordinate with steps or defect sites that are not protected by the passivation layer. We demonstrate that the mild treatment conditions make this technology applicable to the preparation of air-stable copper materials in different forms, including foils, nanowires, nanoparticles and bulk pastes. We expect that the technology developed in this work will help to expand the industrial applications of copper.

Preparation and corrosion inhibition mechanism of a Chitosan ion liquid Schiff base for protection of N80 in HCl solution

Abstract:Three Chitosan ion liquid type Schiff bases (CS-IL-SBs) were synthesized by grafting three aldehydes (Vanillin, Cinnamaldehyde, and Pyridine-4-carboxaldehyde) on CS-IL (Chitosan grafted with p-toluene sulfonic acid) through Schiff base reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates the thermal stability of CS has been enhanced by modification of IL and Schiff base groups. All CS-IL-SBs present non-crystalline structure from X-ray diffraction, and are positively charged surface in solution for improved dispersion stability from Zeta potential testing. The corrosion inhibition performance investigation using the electrochemical and mass loss methods were undertaken, supported with surface analysis and computational studies. All the CS-IL-SBs act as effective corrosion inhibitors obeying Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing both chemisorption and physisorption for N80 steel in 15 % HCl solution. Among them, CS-IL-Vin (grafted by Vanillin) exhibits the maximum inhibition efficiency of 83.66 % at 400 mg/L. The study of the corroded metal surface using scanning electron microscopy depicts a considerably smooth morphology in the presence of the adsorbed CS-IL-SBs. Contact angle tests indicate the water-repellent ability of metal surface have been increased by the addition of CS-IL-SBs. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the active regions of CS-IL-SBs are mainly distributed in the -SO3-, benzene ring, and Schiff base groups. Molecular dynamics simulations show that CS-IL-SBs are parallelly adsorbed on metal surface to form a stable protective film. CS-IL-Vin performs the best among the three CS-IL-SBs, which was selected to be compounded with aided inhibitors with different electrical properties. When CS-IL-Vin was compound with negatively charged 3-carboxybenzene sulfonate in the ratio of 1:3, the corrosion inhibition efficiency is the highest, reaching 93.45%.

Abstract:2-Aminobenzenethiol (ABT) was first reported as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in sulfuric acid environment. The biggest bright spot in this work is the discovery that ABT as a corrosion inhibitor can show high-quality anti-corrosion feature at low concentrations (0.01 M–0.5 M). The polarization curve experiment data shows that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of ABT for Cu in 0.5 mol/L sulfuric acid environment is obviously more than 90%, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency is proportional to ABT concentration. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) experiment shows that the polarization resistance (Rp) in the blank solution is 0.38 kΩ cm2, and the Rp increased to 21.18 kΩ cm2 after adding 0.5 M ABT, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency is as high as 98.2%. The surface morphology test results show that the copper surface after adding ABT is significantly smoother than the copper surface in the blank solution. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experimental results show that the sulfur and nitrogen atoms in ABT can form coordination bonds with copper atoms, resulting in chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption isotherm model shows that the adsorption of ABT on the copper surface conforms to the Langmuir isotherm model. Quantum chemical (QC) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have shown that ABT can show decent anti-corrosion feature.

Abstract:Inhibitors, as indispensable components in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) slurries, have a significant impact on inhibiting copper (Cu) corrosion and enhancing post-polishing surface quality. However, one of the major challenges in CMP lies in unraveling the microscopic corrosion inhibition mechanism of Cu. This work focuses on investigating the impact of an inhibitor, salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on the static etching rate (SER), electrochemical parameters, and surface morphology of Cu. The experimental findings demonstrate that SHA significantly decreases the SER and corrosion current density of Cu, while notably improving the Cu surface quality. The corrosion inhibition mechanisms of SHA on Cu are revealed through adsorption isotherm models, contact angle analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and computational chemistry method. The benzene ring, oxime group, and O1 atom of SHA exhibit significant chemical reactivity, facilitating the preferential adsorption of SHA on Cu in a parallel orientation, thereby forming a hydrophobic protective film on the Cu surface. This process hinders the interaction between corrosive solutions and Cu, therefore SHA exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition performance on Cu. These findings hold great importance in gaining a deeper comprehension of the corrosion inhibition process of Cu, and provide guidance for designing more efficient inhibitors.

Abstract:Inhibition through blocking cathodic active points has been repeatedly reported for Cu corrosion mitigation in acids, yet basic molecular adsorptions cannot discriminate anodic form cathodic performance. This study first investigated copper corrosion in HCl without and with the ionic liquid using electrochemical and theoretical methods. The obtained results showed that more than 99% of the corrosion, according to EIS, decreased only by 2 mM of the inhibitor. Furthermore, a new mechanism was proposed considering the concept that the corroding Cu surface was unlikely to be free of reacting agents while the corrosion inhibition occurred. AIMD and XPS confirmed the mechanism.

Abstract:A novel amino acid derivative (SM) was synthesized through Schiff base reaction between syringaldehyde (SA) and methionine (MTI), and loaded to obtain a reversible pH-responsive releasing corrosion inhibitor silica capsule (CS/@HMSs) with chitosan/tannic acid phenamine networks on the surface. The corrosion inhibition effect of SM and CS/@HMSs on Q235 was studied using electrochemical techniques and surface analysis. The results showed the maximum inhibition efficiency of SM reached to 93.2 % at 200 ppm by immersing Q235 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The theoretically calculated electron parameter (the energy gap ΔE = 4.492 eV) indicated that SM molecules were more susceptible to electron transfer with iron surfaces therefore allowing better adsorption on carbon steel surfaces to prevent corrosion. Meanwhile, UV–visible measurements showed that the chitosan/tannic acid phenamine network on the capsule surface responded to changes in pH. The reversible pH-responsive corrosion inhibitor capsule can be switched on and off several times to release SM, demonstrating reversible release and efficient corrosion protection. This study proposes a novel class of "green" amino acid derivative corrosion inhibitors, and establishes a controllable, efficient and reversible pH-responsive release system. A new approach is provided to stimulating the release of corrosion inhibitors in response to long-term corrosion protection of metals.

Corrosion Inhibition Efficiency of Cysteine-Metal ions Blends on Low Carbon Steel in Chloride-Containing Acidic Media

Abstract:This paper addresses the effect of some metal ions (e.g., Cu2+, Ni2+ and Fe2+) in their blends with cysteine (an environmentally friendly organic compound) on the inhibition efficiency (IE) of the corrosion of low carbon steel (LCS) in three different media, i.e., 0.5 M H2SO4 in the absence and the presence of 3.5 wt% NaCl or 0.5 M Na2SO4. The results obtained from both electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical polarization measurements indicated a significant increase in IE of cysteine in the presence of a few micro molar amounts of Cu2+ ions instead of cysteine alone. On the other hand, blending cysteine with Ni2+ or Fe2+ decreased IE. That is IE reached ca. 90, 91 and 92% in the presence of 8 μM cysteine and 25 μM Cu2+ ions in the first, second and third medium, respectively, compared to ca. 70%, 66% and 58% in the presence of cysteine alone (i.e., in absence of Cu2+ ions). Moreover, polarization experiments indicated that cysteine and Cu2+ ions blend acts as a mixed-type inhibitor for the corrosion of LCS. The formation of Cu(I)-cysteinate complex and/or cysteine SAM at Cu atop the LCS surface (as evident from EDX and SEM results) protects the metal surface from exposure to the aggressive chloride ions. IE of cysteine-Cu2+ blend remains effectively high with time indicating its high stability in the applied chloride-containing acidic media.

Abstract:Extensive efforts have been devoted to the qualification of plant extracts as green corrosion inhibitors for industrial metals, but studies that demonstrate the active component(s) of these extracts remain scarce. We report here that piperine, the major pungent component of peppers, has the best corrosion inhibitive efficiency for copper in HCl among four analogous amide alkaloids isolated from a traditional Chinese medicine. This compound inhibited HCl corrosion more efficiently than cysteine, and did not exhibit markedly decreased efficiency under several harsh experimental conditions. Electrochemical and microscopic analyses suggested that piperine could form a protective layer on the metal surface via both physisorption and chemisorption, reducing the corrosion rate. The adsorption energies of all the test compounds were calculated using a hybrid density functional theory.
Acid-resistant chitosan/graphene oxide adsorbent for Cu2+ removal: The role of mixed cross-linking and amino-functionalized

Abstract:Copper ions in wastewater pose a significant threat to human and ecological safety. Therefore, preparing macroscopic adsorbents with reusable and high adsorption performance is paramount. This paper used graphene oxide as the adsorbent and chitosan as the thickener. Additionally, a silane coupling agent was employed to enhance the acid resistance of chitosan, and amino-modification of graphene oxide was performed. Macroscopic adsorbents with high adsorption capacity were fabricated using 3D printing technology. The results show that all five proportions of inks exhibit good printability. Dissolution experiments revealed that all materials maintained structural integrity after 180 days across pH values. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation of the materials. Adsorption experiments showed that the best performing material ratio was 8 wt% graphene oxide and 7 wt% chitosan. Adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred via monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process was attributed to strong electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, and nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional group coordination. Cycling experiments showed that the material retained good adsorption performance after 6 cycles, suggesting its potential for practical heavy metal treatment applications.
