Abstract:In mollies (genus Poecilid), females typically prefer to mate with larger males. Often females use visual information to assess male body size. We asked how this mating preference evolved in the Cave molly (Poecilia mexicana), after colonizing a cave. Is the visually mediated preference reduced? We observed female preferences for large or small males in simultaneous choice tests using three kinds of experiments: in darkness only non-visual information was available, in light visual information was available either as live stimulus males or as video animated males. Females significantly preferred the larger male under all conditions. We conclude that females evolved the ability to determine male body size by non-visual cues as an adaptation to subterranean life. On the other hand, the ancestral visual preference is maintained. We hypothesize that the non-visual preference is linked to the functionless visual preference. Our study provides the first report of a cave fish responding to video playback.
