Abstract:Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis is a simple way to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, its application is greatly limited by the formation of O-3 byproduct and the low degradation capacity. In this study, we are the first combining an efficient Mn/ZSM-5 catalyst with VUV photolysis to eliminate O-3 and improve VOC degradation efficiency via ozone -assisted catalytic oxidation (OZCO). Results indicate that the benzene removal efficiency is only 48% with 83 ppm residual O-3 in the VUV photolysis process. However, both benzene and O-3 were completely removed after the adoption of the Mn/ZSM-5 catalyst. O-3 can be efficiently decomposed by Mn/ZSM-5 and used for benzene degradation through the OZCO. The possible degradation pathways and mechanism in such a novel VUV-OZCO process was proposed according to the identified products and intermediates. Catalytic Oxidation of Benzene over Mn Modified TiO2/ZSM-5 under Vacuum UV Irradiation

Abstract:Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation was used to improve photocatalytic degradation of gaseous benzene. A multi-functional photocatalyst of 0.1%Mn/TiO2/ZSM-5 was developed by a modified sol-gel method for the elimination and utilization of O-3, the by-product generated from VUV irradiation. O-3 was completely removed and efficiently used to enhance catalytic oxidation of benzene via ozone-assisted catalytic oxidation (OZCO). Under VUV irradiation, benzene removal efficiency was stably kept at 100% over 0.1%Mn/TiO2/ZSM-5, however, it was only about 50% and much O-3 was residual over commercial TiO2 (P25). 0.1%Mn/TiO2/ZSM-5 perfectly synergized with VUV irradiation. It provides more efficient pathways besides photocatalytic oxidation, for benzene degradation. The possible mechanism of benzene degradation over 0.1%Mn/TiO2/ZSM-5 with VUV irradiation was proposed. In Situ Fabrication of Highly Active Γ-Mno2/smmno3 Catalyst for Deep Catalytic Oxidation of Gaseous Benzene, Ethylbenzene, Toluene, and O-Xylene.

Abstract:γ-MnO2, SmMnO3, and γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 catalysts were prepared by facile methods, wherein the SmMnO3 (SMO) perovskite was synthesized through one-step calcination and the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 was formed by an in situ growth of γ-MnO2 on the surface of SMO. These materials ware characterized by XRD, SEM-mapping, N2-adsorption, XPS and H2-TPR to investigate their textural properties. Compared with that of SMO and γ-MnO2, the γ-MnO2/SMO shows better performance for catalytic oxidation of aromatic VOCs in wet air (10 vol.%), which may be attributed to its higher surface molar ratio of lattice oxygen to adsorbed oxygen (Olatt/Oads) and better low-temperature reducibility. Besides, for γ-MnO2/SMO catalyst, a successive oxidation route and the inner principle of BETX (benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and o-xylene) oxidation were also revealed via various tests and a comprehension of dynamics investigation. Meanwhile, the experiments under simulated realistic exhaust conditions displayed that the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 is also a good catalyst with high stability for aromatic VOCs oxidation, and fulfilled endurability to high humidity (20 vol.%).

Abstract:Abstract Herein, the effect of ambient factors (O3 concentration, temperature, and humidity) was explored in catalytic ozonation of toluene by using CuMn2O4, which possessed a great steady-state activity (~ 73%) at the optimal conditions (2100 ppm O3, 100℃, and dry air). Under various conditions, a strong correlation was observed between O3 consumption, toluene oxidation, and COx formation. The technology of DRIFTS and GC-MS were used to study the effects of influencing factors on the toluene degradation process. Cu+ plays an important role in the adsorption of toluene and the oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid. The ·OH and temperature suppressed the deposition of carbonaceous by-products. On the other hand, the situation of the effect of influence factors was investigated by SEM, BET, XPS, and TG. It is revealed that reactive oxygen species are the key to catalytic ozonation and participate in catalytic oxidation of toluene as an electron transfer intermediate on active sites (Cux+-Ov-Mny+).
Study on the Decomposition of Trace Benzene over V2O5–WO3/TiO2-based Catalysts in Simulated Flue Gas

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of benzene was studied by using oxides of vanadium and tungsten supported on titanium oxide (TiO2) catalysts for effective reduction of emissions of toxic organic compounds from waste incineration. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the catalyst's composition, and operating conditions on benzene decomposition, and the relationship between molecular structures of catalysts and their activity was also investigated through replacing the conventional TiO2 catalyst support by nano-sized TiO2. Trace levels (1 and 10 ppm) of gaseous benzene were catalytically decomposed in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor with monolithic oxides of vanadium and tungsten supported on titanium oxide (V2O5-WO3/TiO2) catalysts under conditions simulating the cooling of waste incineration flue gas. On-line monitoring of trace benzene concentrations before and after the catalyst was achieved by means of resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (REMPI-TOFMS). Catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of several parameters, including catalyst operating temperature, space velocity (SV) and initial benzene concentration, on catalytic oxidation of benzene were investigated. Experimental results indicate that reduction of the initial benzene concentration from 10 to 1 ppm either enhances or decreases the catalytic removal efficiency depending on the adsorption capability as well as the oxidation ability of the catalyst tested. The catalytic activity for benzene oxidation not simply relies on the vanadium content of the catalyst; the molecular structure of vanadium oxide, which is known to be influenced by both vanadium oxide loading and the type of support, is very important. Nano-sized TiO2 supported vanadium oxide catalyst (VWNT) with lowest V loading (0.75 wt.%) provides higher catalytic activity than those of the catalysts with higher V contents (1.31 and 2.92 wt.%) but supported by conventional TiO2 (VWT1 and VWT2). The relatively higher catalytic activity of VWNT may be attributed to: (a) the presence of monomeric VOx species, with one terminal V=O bond as indicated by Raman spectra; (b) fewer impurities confounding active catalytic constituents (V, W and Ti); (c) pure anatase phase of TiO2 rather than a mixture phase of anatase and rutile servicing as catalyst support besides its nano-scale particle size; (d) larger specific surface area, smaller average pore diameter, and narrower pore size distribution contribute higher adsorption ability for benzene. No obvious competition effect between NOx removal and benzene oxidation was observed in this study. Reaction rate constants and activation energies for benzene catalytic oxidation tested by the catalysts were calculated. Lower activation energy obtained from VWNT than those of the two catalysts further confirming the higher catalytic activity of VWNT. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Highly dispersed MnO2 nanoparticles were supported on ZSM-5 zeolite and used for ozone-catalytic oxidation (OZCO) of gaseous benzene. The prepared MnO2/ZSM-5 is very active in complete oxidation of benzene even at ambient temperature. Benzene conversion and CO2 selectivity reached 100% and 84.7%, respectively, while no CO byproduct was formed. However, while it ran well in air with low humidity, the catalyst got slowly deactivated after a long run in humid air. The possible reasons responsible for its deactivation were investigated. The structural changes of catalysts and the intermediates generated from benzene oxidation should not be the key cause for catalytic deactivation. Benzene OZCO is highly sensitive to water vapor and water poisoning mainly accounted for the deactivation of MnO2/ZSM-5 due to its occupying of catalytic active sites and adsorption centers. The improved catalytic activity and suppression of deactivation can be easily achieved by reducing water vapor or slightly increasing reaction temperature.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most important precursors to form the fine particulate matter and photochemical smog, and should be strictly controlled. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis has provided a facile and an effective way to remove VOCs due to its powerful oxidation capability under mild reaction conditions. However, VUV irradiation would generate ozone which brings about secondary pollution. In this study, ZSM-5 supported Mn-Ce mixed oxides (Mn-xCe/ZSM-5) were fabricated as efficient catalysts for ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) process, which were applied in combination with VUV photolysis to remove O3 byproduct and simultaneously facilitate toluene oxidation. The results indicated that the Mn-3Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst considerably enhanced the catalytic degradation efficiency up to 93% for the gas-phase toluene, one of the hazardous VOCs. Meanwhile, almost all the O3 by-product could be eliminated in the process. It was found that the strong interaction of the MnOCe bond and the variable chemical valence of Mn and Ce based species in the mixed oxides would tune the redox capacity of Mn-xCe /ZSM-5. An increase in surface Ce3+ species and surface density of oxygen vacancies would benefit the adsorption and catalytic transformation of O3 which eventually form the reactive oxygen species over Mn-xCe/ZSM-5.

Abstract:Low-temperature catalytic oxidation of gaseous 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCBz) on V2O5-WO3/TiO2 films was investigated in the presence and absence of ozone and UV irradiation. This paper describes a rapid (1.8 s), low-ozone consuming (190 ppm), and efficient (99.9%) catalytic degradation of 1,2-DCBz at a relatively low temperature (160 degrees C). The possible underlying mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are attracting more and more attention among all the air pollutants. Photocatalytic oxidation under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation presents a novel and promising process for VOC degradation while also generating ozone as a byproduct. To improve the degradation efficiency of VOCs and remove the residual ozone Mn-TiO2/mesoporous CeO2 composite catalysts were developed and used as a catalyst in a VUV-PCO system for toluene degradation. Characterizations including SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XPS, Raman and H-2-TPR, were conducted to examine the physical and chemical features of the synthetic samples. Results of a toluene degradation test showed that the Mn-TiO2/CeO2 catalyst had superior activity in removing toluene and ozone to Mn-TiO2 and pure CeO2. The toluene removal efficiencies of the catalysts with a different molar ratio of Ti/Ce were found to be in the order of Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:1) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:2) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (2:1). The mineralization rate increased in the order of Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:1) > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (2:1) approximate to Mn-TiO2 > Mn-TiO2/CeO2 (1:2) > CeO2 > VUV photolysis. High ozone removal rates of over 99.9% were obtained for all the doped samples with Mn, resulting in a residual ozone lower than 0.12 ppm. With the use of the scavenger tert-butanol (TBA) and the electron spin resonance (ESR) test, hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) were found to play a significant role in toluene oxidation in the VUV-PCO process and ozone is also involved in the formation of (OH)-O-center dot. Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the crucial precursors to the formation of fine particulate matter and photochemical smog. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation has attracted increasing interest for VOCs degradation owing to its strong oxidation capability and excellent stability. However, the generation of O-3 from VUV irradiation causes secondary pollution and needs to be addressed. In this study, the Mn doped mesoporous TiO2 (Mnimeso-TiO2) was developed and first combined with VUV irradiation to remove O-3 as well as enhance benzene degradation via O-3-assited catalytic oxidation. Results indicate that the Mn doped TiO2 exhibited a much higher benzene removal efficiency (82%) than undoped one (70%) and commercial TiO2 P25 (48%). The O-3 by-product can be completely eliminated by Mnimeso-TiO2 and contributed to benzene removal efficiency of about 34%. The excellent performance was attributed to the formation of highly reactive oxidizing species such as O(D-1), O(P-3), hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) via catalytic decomposition of O-3 over oxygen vacancy sites of Mn oxides. Mnimeso-TiO2 cooperated well with VUV and such a VUV-PCO process is very promising for VOCs degradation. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, a series of Mn/ZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn contents (2, 4, and 6 wt%) were prepared as adsorbents and catalysts. The adsorption of toluene and the regeneration performance of ozone catalytic oxidation at room temperature were investigated. The results showed that the toluene conversion reaches 90 % at 30 celcius through 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 catalytic oxidation. The cycling and ozone utilization rate experiments re-flected that after four consecutive adsorption-ozonation cycles, 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 still maintained good toluene adsorption capacity. In the regeneration process, the molar ratio of ozone consumption to toluene degradation was about 7.7:1, which was approximate to the theoretical molar ratio (6:1). The product distribution on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 during toluene degradation was determined by GC-MS analysis, and possible mechanism for catalytic oxidation of toluene on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 were proposed.
Mesoporous TiO 2 under VUV Irradiation: Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidation for VOCs Degradation at Room Temperature

Abstract:The application of photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) in VOCs abatement is greatly limited by catalytic deactivation and inefficiency. In this study, mesoporous TiO2 was prepared by a one-step hydrolysis method via varying the calcination temperature and used for photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous benzene. Results revealed that the calcination temperature significantly affects the structural properties and catalytic activity of TiO2. The fabricated mesoporous TiO2 exhibited much better catalytic activity and stability towards benzene degradation compared to commercially-available TiO2 (P25) which suffered from quick deactivation and low efficiency. The samples calcined at 400°C showed a good mesoporous structure and superior capacity for benzene adsorption, which led to the best photocatalytic activity. VUV irradiation in the PCO process greatly enhanced benzene degradation and exhibited a benzene removal efficiency of 80% while it was less than 10% under UV irradiation. VUV photolysis and O3 generated from VUV irradiation made a major contribution to benzene degradation in the VUV-PCO process.

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is of great interest for the removal of VOCs owing to its strong oxidation capability. However, its application is greatly limited by catalytic deactivation. Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation provides a novel way to improve the photocatalytic activity while much O3 will be generated which may cause secondary pollution. In this study, a multi-functional catalyst of Mn/TiO2/activated carbon (AC) was developed to eliminate and utilize O3, as well as enhance catalytic oxidation of VOC degradation via ozone-assisted catalytic oxidation (OZCO). The results indicate that Mn modified TiO2/AC (i.e. 0.1%Mn/20%TiO2/AC) achieved a toluene removal efficiency of nearly 86% with 100% elimination rate of O3. With the help of Mn/TiO2/AC catalyst, O3 was catalytically decomposed and transformed into active species of O (1D) and OH, thus enhancing toluene removal. The combination of VUV irradiation with multi-functional catalyst provides a novel and efficient way for the degradation of VOCs.

Abstract:The degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low temperature remains a big challenge. Photothermal catalysis coupling the advantages of photocatalysis and thermocatalysis is promising to address this issue. However, there is still a long way to construct highly active catalysts and deeply understand the mechanism of photothermal catalysis. Herein, maganese oxide (MnO2)catalysts embedded with Pt single-atoms (0.11 wt% Pt) have achieved greatly enhanced toluene conversion of 95%, far surpassing most supported Pt photothermal catalysts. The excellent catalytic activity has been disclosed to derive from the synergetic effect oflight-driven thermocatalysis and photocatalysis. The light-driven thermocatalysis predominates and the strong electron transfer from Pt single-atoms to MnO2 improves the activity of surface lattice oxygen to boost the generation of benzoic acid and the mineralization of toluene. Meanwhile, in photocatalytic process, Pt single-atoms accelerate the generation of superoxide radicals (O2-), which facilitate the ring-opening and deep oxidation of toluene. This understanding on the photothermal synergetic mechanism will inspire the design of highly efficient catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:Benzene is a toxic air pollutant and causes great harm to human being. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) has been frequently studied for benzene removal, however, its PCO efficiency is still very low and the photocatalysts are easy to be deactivated. To improve the efficiency and stability of PCO, UV lamps with partial 185 nm UV irradiation were used to activate photocatalysts (denoted as 185-PCO). Cobalt modified TiO2 (Co-TiO2) was developed to improve the PCO activity and eliminate ozone generated from 185 nm UV irradiation. Results show that benzene removal efficiency of PCO with 254 nm UV irradiation (denoted as 254-PCO) is only 2.1% while it was greatly increased to 51.5% in 185-PCO. 185-PCO exhibited superior capacity for benzene oxidation. In the 185-PCO process, much ozone was left in case of TiO2 as photocatalysts while it can be nearly eliminated by 1% Co-TiO2.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (A0Ps) are regarded as one of the most promising technologies for VOC degradation. In this study, MnO2-rGO composite samples were prepared and applied in a system consisting of VUV photolysis and ozone catalytic oxidation for the degradation of toluene. Extensive characterizations, including BET, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, Raman, XRD, FTIR and XPS, were conducted to analyze the features of the composite MnO2-rGO samples. Results of toluene removal, mineralization and ozone decomposition showed that the MnO2-rGO composite sample with Mn loading of 25 wt% exhibited the best performance in this study due to its superior adsorption activity and moderated MnO2 loading. The intermediates of the degradation process were analyzed showing more by-products with shorter chains in the presence of the MnO2-rGO catalysts compared to VUV photolysis alone, indicating more complete reactions occurred. Generation of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) and superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)) were confirmed to contribute in the toluene degradation. Two reaction pathways (i.e. center dot O(2)(- )and OH center dot based) and mechanism of toluene degradation were proposed. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of Mn/Cu cosubstituted ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobil–5) with different Mn/Cu molar ratios were synthesized by a one-step heteronuclear substitution hydrothermal method. Singly substituted Mn- and Cu-ZSM-5 compounds were also prepared. The catalytic oxidation performance of hexane and the catalyst surface physicochemical properties over each catalyst were investigated to determine the reaction activity, the main influencing factors and the mechanism for hexane oxidation. Part of the framework Mn of ZSM-5 was substituted by Cu2+ during Mn/Cu cosubstitution, facilitating the generation of isolated and/or framework Cu2+ and extraframework ultrafine hollow spherical MnOx nanoclusters, and increasing the low-temperature reducibility and the amount and transfer capacity of superficial lattice oxygen. Mn-Cu-HZ(1:1) with an appropriate Mn/Cu cosubstitution ratio exhibited the best catalytic oxidation performance, mainly because it has the most superficial lattice oxygens, a relatively high transfer capacity, the highest low-temperature reducibility and suitable acidity. Synergetic catalysis could occur between isolated and/or framework Cu2+ and ultrafine MnOx nanoclusters via a Mars-Van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. A reaction route for hexane oxidation over Mn-Cu-HZ(1:1) was proposed based on the in situ DRIFTS and GC–MS results. This work provides new insights into the design of VOC degradation catalysts.
