Abstract:Carbon-supported low-Pt ordered intermetallic nanoparticulate catalysts (PtM3, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) are explored in order to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity while achieving a high stability compared to previously reported Pt-richer ordered intermetallics (Pt3M and PtM) and low-Pt disordered alloy catalysts. Upon high-temperature thermal annealing, ordered PtCo3 intermetallic nanoparticles are successfully prepared with minimum particle sintering. In contrast, the PtFe3 catalyst, despite the formation of ordered structure, suffers from obvious particle sintering and detrimental metal-support interaction, while the PtNi3 catalyst shows no structural ordering transition at all but significant particle sintering. The ordered PtCo3 catalyst exhibits durably thin Pt shells with a uniform thickness below 0.6 nm (corresponding to 2-3 Pt atomic layers) and a high Co content inside the nanoparticles after 10 000 potential cycling, leading to a durably compressive Pt surface and thereby both high activity (fivefold vs a commercial Pt catalyst and 1.7-fold vs an ordered PtCo intermetallic catalyst) and high durability (5 mV loss in half-wave potential and 9% drop in mass activity). These results provide a new strategy toward highly active and durable ORR electrocatalysts by rational development of low-Pt ordered intermetallics.

Abstract:To achieve fuel cell commercialization, the performance improvement and cost reduction of catalysts are still the main challenges. To enhance the catalytic activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we prepare Au-PtFe particles entrapped in a porous carbon and then convert them to have a fine-grained and highly ordered intermetallic structure. The optimal Au-PtFe particles in catalyzing ORR exhibit initial specific and mass activities 9 times higher than the commercial catalyst of Pt/C. Such a large enhancement is much higher than most of the Pt-based ordered intermetallic catalysts reported in the literature. Accelerated durability testing induces little degradation of the catalytic activity to the ordered structure, particularly the Au-doped one, after potential cycling for many thousands of cycles under harsh electrochemical conditions involving an acidic medium and a high potential range of 0.66-1.3 V. This is in big contrast with the large degradation shown by most previous catalysts. The excellent activity and durability are attributed to synergistic effects of the fine-grained and ordered structure of the particles, the confining support of the porous carbon, and the homogeneous incorporation of a trace amount of Au. The new intermetallic catalyst of Au-PtFe/C represents a new strategy for performance enhancement and cost reduction and thus promotes practical applications of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
Fully Ordered and Trace Au‐Doped Intermetallic PdFe Catalyst with Extra High Activity and Durability Toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Developing Pt-free catalysts with high activity and durability is considered as an essential step for cost reduction and real commercialization of fuel cells. Previous Pt-free catalysts are either lack of activity and/or insufficient in durability. Here we report the first synthesis of a carbon-supported PdFe catalyst with a fully ordered intermetallic structure by controlling the atomic ratio of Pd and Fe and high-temperature annealing for structural ordering. This intermetallic catalyst is then doped with a trace amount of Au (atomic ratio of Au/Pd: 1/50) mainly in the surface region of the ordered lattice. Such an Au-doped intermetallic PdFe catalyst is finally demonstrated to possess a comparable catalytic activity and much better durability for oxygen reduction reaction than the commercial catalyst of Pt/C. For example, the half-wave potential of the Au-PdFe catalyst decreases at a rate 9 times slower than that of Pt/C catalyst after potential cycling under harsh electrochemical conditions. The excellent activity and durability of this new catalyst is attributed to the ordered structure of PdFe particles and the protective effect of the surface Au doping. This study provides a new strategy to developing Pt-free catalysts, lowering the production cost, and accelerating the practical application of fuel cells.
Leaching- and Sintering-Resistant Hollow or Structurally Ordered Intermetallic PtFe Alloy Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Abstract:Carbon supported Pt-based alloy materials that have been developed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are vulnerable to deactivation due to the loss of non-noble metal components (leaching) or detachment, migration and aggregation of active nanoparticles (sintering). Until now some methods have been developed to inhibit leaching or sintering individually. However, a route able to avoid leaching and sintering simultaneously is still lacking. Herein, we develop a thermally driven interfacial diffusion alloying route that allows for the direct evolution of solid Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on carbon (Pt/C) into a Pt-skin-like hollow PtFe alloy or a structurally ordered intermetallic PtFe alloy, together with in situ encapsulation of PtFe alloy NPs with a thin layer porous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) shell. The robust NC shells not only effectively prevent Pt-based NPs from detachment, migration, and aggregation during accelerated durability tests but also allow smoother access of electrolyte to the Pt surface, thus allowing the catalysts to well preserve their high catalytic activity. The well-defined shape and atomic arrangement of PtFe alloy NPs exhibit over 600% increase in mass activity and specific activity when compared with that of the pristine Pt/C catalyst. Stability tests confirm that the ordered PtFe alloy is more electrochemically stable than the disordered hollow PtFe alloy and Pt/C catalysts due to its ordered atomic arrangement and the robust NC shell.
Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with sufficient activity and stability of Pt are beneficial for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here we report an effective approach to prepare a composite catalyst comprising of ordered L12-Pt3Fe intermetallic nanoparticles interact with single atom Fe-Nx-Cy active sites. The addition of Fe and the confinement effect of hierarchical porous structure limit the growth of intermetallic particle size (around 2.5 nm). The ligand effect of the electron transfer from Fe to Pt and the synergistic interaction between L12-Pt3Fe and Fe-Nx-Cy work together to reduce oxygen intermediates adsorption and improve kinetics process. Experimentally, the L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C catalyst shows high mass activity and specific activity at 1.010 A/mgPt and 1.166 mA/cm2, respectively, which are 5.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C (0.174 A/mgPt and 0.230 mA/cm2). Thanks to the more stable L12 structure, L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C exhibits better durability (14 mV E1/2 loss of L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C and 33 mV E1/2 loss of commercial Pt/C) after 30,000 cycles accelerated stress tests. The strategy to design and prepare small particle Pt-based intermetallic alloys coordinated with M-N-C active sites provides a new direction to obtain low-cost and easily prepared effective ORR catalysts.

Abstract:A PtFe/C catalyst has been synthesized by impregnation and high-temperature reduction followed by acid-leaching. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray atomic near edge spectroscopy characterization reveal that Pt3Fe alloy formation occurs during high-temperature reduction and that unstable Fe species are dissolved into acid solution. The difference in Fe concentration from the core region to the surface and strong O-Fe bonding may drive the outward diffusion of Fe to the highly corrugated Pt-skeleton, and the resulting highly dispersed surface FeO x is stable in acidic medium, leading to the construction of a Pt3Fe@Pt-FeO x architecture. The as prepared PtFe/C catalyst demonstrates a higher activity and comparable durability for the oxygen reduction reaction compared with a Pt/C catalyst, which might be due to the synergetic effect of surface and subsurface Fe species in the PtFe/C catalyst.

Abstract:Intermetallic Pt-based nanoparticles have displayed excellent activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize highly atomically ordered Pt-based nanoparticle catalysts because the formation of an atomically ordered structure usually requires high-temperature annealing accompanied by grain sintering. Here we report the direct epitaxial growth of well-aligned, highly atomically ordered Pt3Fe and PtFe nanoparticles (<5 nm) on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundles films. The long-range periodically symmetric van der Waals (vdW) interactions between SWCNT bundles and Pt-Fe nanoparticles play an important role in promoting not only the alignment ordering of inter-nanoparticles but also the atomic ordering of intra-nanoparticles. The ordered Pt3Fe/SWCNT catalyst showed enhanced ORR catalytic performance of 2.3-fold higher mass activity and 3.1-fold higher specific activity than commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the formation of an interlocked interface and strong vdW interaction endow the Pt-Fe/SWCNT catalysts with extreme long-term stability in potential cycling and excellent anti-thermal sintering ability.
A facile strategy to prepare FeN x decorated PtFe intermetallic with excellent acidic oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability

Abstract:The construction of low-Pt-content intermetallic on carbon supports has been verified as a promising method to promote the activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, we have developed a simple and effective strategy to obtain a well-designed CNT-PtFe-PPy precursor. This precursor contains modulated Pt- and Fe-based content dispersed in polypyrrole (PPy) chain segments, which are in-situ generated on the templates of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Subsequent pyrolysis of the CNT-PtFe-PPy precursor produces a catalyst, which contains both Fe-N x and PtFe intermetallic active sites. Due to the highly efficient dispersion of active species, the electrocatalyst displays a 9.5 times higher specific activity (SA) and 8.5 times higher mass activity (MA) than those of a commercial Pt/C catalyst in a 0.1 M HClO 4 solution. Additionally, these results, combined with excellent durability (the SA and MA maintained 94% and 91% of initial activity after a 10-k cycle accelerated durability test), represent among the best performance achieved so far for Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the presence of Fe-N 4 species reduces the adsorption energy between the PtFe intermetallic compound and OH*, accelerating the ORR process.

Abstract:The long-range periodically ordered atomic structures in intermetallic nanoparticles (INPs) can significantly enhance both the electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical stability toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared to the disordered atomic structures in ordinary solid-solution alloy NPs. Accordingly, through a facile and scalable synthetic method, a series of carbon-supported ultrafine Pt3CoxMn1–x ternary INPs are prepared in this work, which possess the “skin-like” ultrathin Pt shells, the ordered L12 atomic structure, and the high-even dispersion on supports (L12-Pt3CoxMn1–x/SPt INPs/C). Electrochemical results present that the composition-optimized L12-Pt3Co0.7Mn0.3/SPt INPs/C exhibits the highest electrocatalytic activity among the series, which are also much better than those of the pristine ultrafine Pt/C. Besides, it also has a greatly enhanced electrochemical stability. In addition, the effects of annealing temperature and time are further investigated. More importantly, such superior ORR electrocatalytic performance of L12-Pt3Co0.7Mn0.3/SPt INPs/C are also well demonstrated in practical fuel cells. Physicochemical characterization analyses further reveal the major origins of the greatly enhanced ORR electrocatalytic performance: the Pt–Co–Mn alloy-induced geometric and ligand effects as well as the extremely high L12 atomic-ordering degree. This work not only successfully develops a highly active and stable ordered ternary intermetallic ORR electrocatalyst, but also elucidates the corresponding “structure-function” relationship, which can be further applied in designing other intermetallic (electro)catalysts.

Abstract:Structurally ordered intermetallic structure is an efficient catalyst design strategy to significantly improve the catalytic performance of Pt alloy electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. However, a high structural ordering degree generally relies on high-temperature annealing, which results in detrimental catalyst particle sintering. Herein, we reveal that the incompatibility between high ordering degree and minimum particle sintering during thermal annealing can be resolved through rational development of structurally ordered Pt ternary alloys. Ordering transformation mediated by high-temperature annealing of three representative Pt ternary alloys (Pt–Fe–Co, Pt–Ni–Co and Pt–Fe–Ni) at a similar Pt composition was systematically studied. It was found that Fe can significantly promote the structural ordering due to a faster atomic diffusion, whereas Co can effectively inhibit the particle sintering. As a result of the synergy between Co and Fe, the ordered PtCoFe catalyst exhibited the highest ordering degree after thermal annealing at 600 °C with the minimum nanoparticle growth, leading to the highest catalytic activity (0.65 A/mgPt at 0.9 V, 4 times that of pure Pt catalyst) and best stability (16% drop after 10,000 potential cycles). This study provides important clues for the rational design of high-performance structurally ordered ternary Pt alloys.

Abstract:Platinum-based atomically ordered alloys (i.e., intermetallic compounds) have distinct advantages over disordered solid solution counterparts in boosting the cathodic oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Nevertheless, the pivotal role of ordering degree of intermetallic catalysts in promoting ORR performance has been ignored heavily so far, probably owing to the lack of synthetic routes for controlling the ordering degree, especially for preparing highly ordered intermetallic catalysts. Herein, a family of intermetallic PtFe catalysts with similar particle size of 3-4 nm but varied ordering degree in a wide range of 10-70% are prepared. After constructing the PtFe/Pt core/shell structure with around 3 Pt-layer skin, a positive correlation between the ordering degree of the intermetallic catalysts and their ORR activity and durability is identified. Notably, the highly ordered PtFe/Pt catalyst exhibits a high mass activity of 0.92 A mg(Pt)(-1) at 0.9 ViR-corrected as cathode catalyst in H-2-O-2 fuel cell, with only 24% loss after accelerated durability tests. The ordering degree-dependent performance can be ascribed to the compressive strain effect induced by the intermetallic PtFe core with smaller lattice parameters, and the more thermodynamically stable intermetallic structure compared to disordered alloys.

Abstract:Pt-based intermetallic alloys have shown bright prospects for promoting the activity and durability of fuel cell cathode oxygen reduction. However, avoiding particle sintering in the preparation of highly ordered platinum-based intermetallic compounds remains a challenge. In this work, urea was introduced for high-temperature co-reduction to obtain highly ordered intermetallic nanocrystals of ultra-small size(< 4 nm) with L12 phase structure. The attained L12-PtCu3/C achieves a half-wave potential of 0.938 V and possesses a mass activity of 1.17 A mgPt-1 achieving 12.3 times that of commercial Pt/C. After 20 k accelerated durability test, L12-PtCu3/C shows the stronger stability with the slightly drop of half-wave potential by only 13 mV, and the mass activity decreased by only 27.8%.Density-functional theory indicates that the doping of transition metal Cu atoms and the formation of ordered intermetallic structures can introduce compressive strains that lower the d-band centers, weakening the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates, and thus enhancing the catalytic activity.

Herein, we developed a new strategy to synthesize PtCu-ordered intermetallic catalysts by the generation of the Pt@Cu core/shell nanoparticles (Pt@Cu NPs) by Pt-assisted H2 reduction of Cu2+ with subsequent annealing at 500-1000 °C. Compared to the commonly used wet-impregnation method, the core/shell structure starts to form ordered PtCu alloys at a lower annealing temperature (500 °C). The Pt@Cu core/shell structure avoids the necessary process of Cu atoms diffusing to Pt NPs across the carbon supports occurred during high-temperature annealing in the wet-impregnation method, which ensures the formation of PtCu NPs with higher ordering degree while annealing at the same temperature. The highly ordered small-sized PtCu catalysts prepared by the core/shell strategy exhibit higher mass activity and specific activity compared to those prepared by the wet-impregnation method. Moreover, a positive correlation between the ORR activity and the ordering degree of the intermetallic PtCu NPs is identified, which could be associated with the increase of compressive strain with the ordering degree.
Optimizing the Structural Configuration of FePt-FeOx Nanoparticles at the Atomic Scale by Tuning the Post-Synthetic Conditions

Abstract:Tailoring the atomic structural configuration at metal and oxide interface offers an effective route for the development of catalysts with optimized properties. Here, we report the design of a unique structural configuration of yolk-shell-like FePt-FeOx nanoparticles (NPs), that exhibits notably enhanced activity and stability towards CO oxidation at relatively low temperatures (< 100 degrees C) compared with Pt NPs. The optimized FePt-FeOx catalysts were produced by partially reducing core-shell FePt-FeOx NPs under H-2 at 200 degrees C. The structural configuration was interrogated by advanced electron microscopy, which clearly reveals the evolution of the morphology, elemental segregation, and phase transition of FePt-FeOx NPs after the post-synthesis treatment. The generation of voids, partial crystallization of the FeOx shell and increased electron density on Pt were identified as key contributors to the enhanced activity and stability towards CO oxidation in FePt-FeOx NPs. This unique structural configuration allows for CO and O-2 diffusion through the FeOx shell with an increased exposure for CO and O-2 adsorption onto the core as well as an enhanced activation of O-2 compared with the core-shell FePt-FeOx without voids, which collectively boost the catalytic performance.
Strong Electronic Interaction Of Amorphous Fe2o3 Nanosheets With Single-Atom Pt Toward Enhanced Carbon Monoxide Oxidation

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are critical to several chemical processes, but their efficiency is not satisfying enough in some cases, because only the surface active-site atoms participate in the reaction. Henceforth, catalysts with single-atom dispersions are highly desirable to maximize their mass efficiency, but fabricating these structures using a controllable method is still challenging. Most previous studies have focused on crystalline materials. However, amorphous materials may have enhanced performance due to their distorted and isotropic nature with numerous defects. Here reported is the facile synthesis of an atomically dispersed catalyst that consists of single Pt atoms and amorphous Fe2O3 nanosheets. Rational control can regulate the morphology from single atom clusters to sub-nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations show the synergistic effect resulted from the strong binding and stabilization of single Pt atoms with the strong metal-support interaction between the in situ locally anchored Pt atoms and Fe2O3 lead to a weak CO adsorption. Moreover, the distorted amorphous Fe2O3 with O vacancies is beneficial for the activation of O-2, which further facilitates CO oxidation on nearby Pt sites or interface sites between Pt and Fe2O3, resulting in the extremely high performance for CO oxidation of the atomic catalyst.

Abstract:In-depth investigation of metal-metal oxide interactions and their corresponding evolution is of paramount importance to heterogeneous catalysis as it allows the understanding and maneuvering of the structure of catalytic motifs. Herein, using a series of core/shell metal/iron oxide (M/FeOx, M = Pd, Pt, Au) nanoparticles and through a combination of in situ and ex situ electron and X-ray investigations, we revealed anomalous and dissimilar M-FeOx interactions among different systems under reducing conditions. Pd interacts strongly with FeOx after high-temperature reductive treatment, featured by the formation of Pd single atoms in the FeOx matrix and increased Pd-Fe bonding, while Pt transforms into ordered PtFe intermetallics and Pt single atoms immediately upon the coating of FeOx. In contrast, Au does not manifest strong bonding with FeOx. As a proof of concept of tailoring metal-metal oxide interactions for catalysis, optimized Pd/FeOx demonstrates 100% conversion and 86.5% selectivity at 60 °C for acetylene semihydrogenation.
