Abstract:The size uniformity and dispersity of inorganic nanoparticles are important when they are dispersed in organic phase and serve as the precursor for particle-deposited nanosensors. However, most of the nanoparticles are dispersed into coating solutions right after surface modification, where the natural tendency of nanoparticles to agglomerate reduces the monodispersity and size uniformity during the coating process. By initiation of microdroplet coalescence, a method for in situ dispersion of surface-modified Au nanoparticles is presented in this study. Under optimal conditions, about 88% of the modified Au nanoparticles with an average size of 19 nm could be in situ dispersed. On the basis of dip-coating of the monodispersed Au nanocolloids, a SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) film was fabricated by uniformly depositing particles onto the surface and tremendous enhancement of Raman scattering was achieved. The SERS film could be used to detect a representative contaminant, trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE), with a detection limit of down to 10 ppb.

Abstract:In this study, we have developed an in situ dispersion method to prepare nonaqueous Ag nanosuspensions by controlling microdroplet coalescence. A plate-type microchannel was constructed to initiate droplet coalescence. Under optimal conditions, the hexane-based nano-silver suspension with a high particle concentration of 0.47 mol/L and an average particle size of 10 nm could be controllably prepared. The effects of various operation parameters on droplet coalescence and particle dispersion were experimentally investigated. The stability of the dispersed silver nanoparticles in suspensions was significantly enhanced due to the in situ dispersion, and no obvious agglomeration could be observed in the experiments. Abstract:There dimensional (3D) metallic nanohybrids have attracted attentions for the applications in nanophotonic devices, catalysis and biosensor. Here, the 3D suspended Ag nanoparticles/Carbon nanotubes (AgNPs/CNTs) nanohybrids, obtained by self-aggregating AgNPs onto the suspended CNT networks, are synthesized and used for the SERS application. The electric field distribution with the near-field and far-field coupling can be obtained by the optimization of the nanogaps of the AgNPs. Such suspended AgNPs/CNTs nanohybrids are studied to be used as the ultra-sensitive SERS biosensor, benefiting from the bio-compatibility and chemical absorption of the CNT networks and the EM enhancement of the 3D denser "hotspots". R6G molecules with a concentration as low as 10(-15) M can be clearly detected, demonstrating their excellent Raman enhancement.

Abstract:Achieving versatile dispersion of nanoparticles in a broad range of solvents (e.g., water, oil, and biofluids) without repeatedly recourse to chemical modifications are desirable in optoelectronic devices, self-assembly, sensing, and biomedical fields. However, such a target is limited by the strategies used to decorate nanoparticle’s surface properties, leading to a narrow range of solvents for existing nanoparticles. Here we report a concept to break the nanoparticle’s dispersible limit via electrochemically anchoring surface ligands capable of sensing the surrounding liquid medium and rotating to adapt to it, immediately forming stable dispersions in a wide range of solvents (polar and nonpolar, biofluids, etc.). Moreover, the smart nanoparticles can be continuously electrodeposited in the electrolyte, overcoming the electrode surface-confined low throughput limitation of conventional electrodeposition methods. The anomalous dispersive property of the smart Ag nanoparticles enables them to resist bacteria secreted species-induced aggregation and the structural similarity of the surface ligands to that of the bacterial membrane assists them to enter the bacteria, leading to high antibacterial activity. The simple but massive fabrication process and the enhanced dispersion properties offer great application opportunities to the smart nanoparticles in diverse fields.

Abstract:Herein flower-like silver nanostructures with different size and ratio of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) to face-centered cubic (FCC) phase were synthetized. By comparing with the results utilizing different surfactants, the growth process of Ag nanostructures has been investigated. Flower-like Ag nanoparticles containing numerous hot spots could serve as excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, and the Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G with the concentration as low as 10-6 M can be recognized.

Abstract:Monodispersity and size uniformity are critical issues for nanoparticles, especially for the inorganic particles dispersed in organic carriers serving as the precursor of composites. Herein, for the first time, we have developed a method based on flow-induced droplet coalescence for in situ dispersion of surface-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles to prepare Fe3O4/polystyrene (Fe3O4/PS) composite particles. A plate-type microchannel was constructed to initiate droplet coalescence for reducing the water-oil interfacial area and for dispersing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the precursor suspensions. Under optimized conditions, the precursor suspensions could be composed of monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 12 nm. In this case, the saturation magnetization of the prepared superparamagnetic composites was as high as 4.012 emu g(-1) at a magnetite content of 5 wt%. The method is simple and has great potential to be tailored for the preparation of non-aqueous suspensions with uniform and monodispersed nanoparticles.
Shell Thickness-Dependent Au@Ag Nanoparticles for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection of Pollutants

Abstract:A series of Au@Ag core–shell nanocomposites with varying Ag shell thickness were prepared as potential SERS substrates via chemical reduction method. Rhodamine 6G, crystal violet, and thiram were selected as probes for SERS substrate optimization and sensitivity testing of nanocomposites. According to the results, the Au surface was uniformly coated with a ∼3–12 nm thick Ag layer, exhibiting the even particle size distribution. The above nanocomposites demonstrated an extremely high detection limit for Rhodamine 6G (up to 10 −11 M) within a sensitivity range of 10 −5 to 10 −11 M. At the same time, the detection limits for crystal violet and thiram were 10 −10 M and 10 −9 M, respectively. Moreover, the SERS performance remained basically unchanged after 30-day storage, indicating good stability and uniformity of Au@Ag substrates. Thus, the proposed Au@Ag nanocomposites have a great application potential for the detection of low-concentration pollutants in the environment along with the prolonged in-use stability.

Abstract:Recently, multiscale cavity arrays have drawn significant attention due to their excellent optical capturing capability. Here, we successfully constructed a grating microcavity with a nanowire structure that the nanoscale copper oxide nanowires (CuO NWs) with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) introduced into the micrometer grating structure, which can provide a large surface area and high-density “hot spots”, with the ability to couple with incident light to excite multiscale cavity modes. We demonstrated that the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/grating/CuO NWs/Ag NPs can serve as highly sensitive, homogeneous, and stable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with a minimum detection of 1 × 10–11 M (rhodamine 6G, i.e., R6G) and 1 × 10–9 M (Sudan I). Furthermore, the remarkable hydrophobic properties (water contact angles: 165°) of the PDMS/grating/CuO NWs/Ag NP substrate allow it to directly detect organic pollutants in oil within a mixture of oil and water.

Abstract:Quantitative measurement is one of the ultimate targets for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), but it suffers from difficulties in controlling the uniformity of hot spots and placing the target molecules in the hot spot space. Here, a convenient approach of three-phase equilibrium controlling the shrinkage of three-dimensional (3D) hot spot droplets has been demonstrated for the quantitative detection of the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in serum using a handheld Raman spectrometer. Droplet shrinkage, triggered by the shaking of aqueous nanoparticle (NP) colloids with immiscible oil chloroform (CHCl3) after the addition of negative ions and acetone, not only brings the nanoparticles in close proximity but can also act as a microreactor to enhance the spatial enrichment capability of the analyte in plasmonic sites and thereby realize simultaneously controlling 3D hot spots and placing target molecules in hot spots. Moreover, the shrinking process of Ag colloid droplets has been investigated using a high-speed camera, an in situ transmission electron microscope (in situ TEM), and a dark-field microscope (DFM), demonstrating the high stability and uniformity of nanoparticles in droplets. The shrunk Ag NP droplets exhibit excellent SERS sensitivity and reproducibility for the quantitative analysis of 5-FU over a large range of 50-1000 ppb. Hence, it is promising for quantitative analysis of complex systems and long-term monitoring of bioreactions.

Abstract:A controllable particle size mono-dispersing nanofluid system has been developed to address the challenges of low porosity and low-permeability in low to ultra-low-permeability reservoirs. This system combines high dispersion stability with enhanced oil recovery performance, and its effectiveness in improving recovery rates in low-permeability reservoirs, where conventional chemical flooding is ineffective, has been well demonstrated. Using the in situ method to prepare monodispersed nano-silica particles, the effects of the water concentration, ammonia concentration, and silica precursor concentration on the morphology, particle size, and formation time of the silica spherical particles were analyzed. Building on this foundation, a partially hydrophobic modified nano-silica oil displacement fluid was synthesized in situ. The system's dispersion stability, ability to reduce oil-water interfacial tension, and capacity to alter rock wettability were evaluated. Core physical models were used to evaluate the oil displacement efficiency and the permeability applicability limits of the self-dispersing nano-silica oil displacement system. The experiments confirmed that the particle size distribution of the self-dispersing nano-silica oil displacement system can be controlled within a range of 10 nm to 300 nm. The nanofluids exhibited excellent stability, effectively altering the rock wettability from oil-wet to water-wet and reducing the oil-water interfacial tension to approximately 10−1 mN/m. The nano-displacement system increased the recovery rate of the low permeability reservoirs by more than 17%. The in situ modification method used to prepare these self-dispersing nanoparticles provides valuable insights for synergistic enhancement of recovery when combined with other systems, such as surfactants and CO2. This approach also opens up new possibilities and drives further development in the field of nano-enhanced oil recovery chemistry.

Abstract:Cu2O nanospheres (NSs) were synthesized by modifying the glucose reduction method. Based on this method, Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs were further prepared by in situ reduction of HAuCl4 (via electron beam evaporation of Ag). With Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) characteristics of the three samples were systematically studied. The experiment results showed that the enhancement factor (EF) of Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs as 1.25 × 108 (2.74 × 109) and the ultralow detection limit (LOD) as 8.07 × 10-12 (1.13 × 10-13) M for R6G. The excellent performance of SERS may be due to the charge transfer (CT) between metal-semiconductor (MS) molecules and the strong electromagnetic field (E-field) of each hot spot. In addition, discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulations were performed to simulate the E-field enhancement of the Cu2O and Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs in a three-dimensional (3D) configuration. These further supported that the high SERS performance for R6G is because of the powerful E-field coupling between neighboring Au (Ag) NPs and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The Cu2O/Ag NSs have potential in applications such as biomedicine, food safety, and environmental monitoring because of their high sensitivity and good reproducibility.
Controllable Nanoparticle Aggregation through a Superhydrophobic Laser-Induced Graphene Dynamic System for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used for low-concentration molecular detection; however, challenges related to detection uniformity and repeatability are bottlenecks for practical application, especially as regards ultrasensitive detection. Here, through the coupling of bionics and fluid mechanics, a lotus-leaf effect and rose-petal effect (LLE-RPE)-integrated superhydrophobic chip is facilely developed using laser-induced graphene (LIG) fabricated on a polyimide film. Dense and uniform aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in droplets is realized through a constant contact angle (CCA) evaporation mode in the dynamic enrichment process, facilitating reliable ultrasensitive detection. The detection chip consists of two components: an LLE zone containing an ethanol-treated LIG superhydrophobic surface with a low-adhesive property, which functions as an AuNP-controllable aggregation zone, and an RPE zone containing an as-fabricated LIG superhydrophobic surface with water-solution pinning ability, which functions as a droplet solvent evaporation and a AuNP blending zone. AuNPs realize uniform aggregation during rolling on the LLE zone, and then get immobilized on the RPE zone to complete evaporation of the solvent, followed by Raman detection. Here, based on dense and uniform AuNP aggregation, the detection system achieves high-efficiency (242 s/18 μL) and ultralow-concentration (10<sup>-17</sup> M) detection of a target analyte (rhodamine 6G). The proposed system constitutes a simple approach toward high-performance detection for chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, biological analysis, and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:A facile wet chemical method was employed to synthesize magnetically separable Ag@Fe3O4-GO nanocomposites (NCs). The synthesized Ag@Fe3O4-GO NCs were characterized by different analytical techniques including X-ray-diffraction (XRD), Raman, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the synthesized Ag@Fe3O4-GO NCs, the role of GO is to absorb organic dyes from wastewater, superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) assist magnetic separation, and Ag NPs act as a SERS substrate for the detection of organic dyes and catalyst to reduce organic pollutants in the presence of a reducing agent (NaBH4). The catalytic efficiency of the synthesized Ag@Fe3O4-GO NCs was evaluated in the reduction of organic pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) in water under mild conditions. These nanocomposites are also efficient for the removal of lubricant oil from water by applying a simple external magnetic field. The composite also displays antibacterial activity towards gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Target Induced Interfacial Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles: A New Platform for Reproducible Quantification of Copper Ions.

Abstract:One of the main problems of the nanoparticle dispersion state change (e.g. from dispersion to aggregation) based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection is that the dynamic process of such in-solution reactions is always uncontrollable. This leads to poor reproducibility from a narrow time window of all such strategies, and finally great difference between the data from the diverse methods, and even between various sample batches. To address such problem, a facile, rapid SERS quantification protocol has been developed relying on target induced nanoparticle self-assembly at oil/water interfaces for copper ions analysis. In response to copper, the core-molecule-shell (CMS) nanoparticles spontaneously migrate to the interface and are assembled into densely packed arrays generating strong plasmonic coupling, which enables stable, sensitive and selective Raman quantitation, as well as visual detection. Also, this strategy shows capability for determination of large scale samples as the products can be stable for at least three weeks, and has been successfully applied to real sample detection. The developed Target Induced Nanoparticle Self-Assembled Interface (TINSAI) can be employed to both visual test and Raman quantitative detection, which would provide a platform for on-site screening as well as high-throughput detection with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:This paper reports a simple and convenient method to fabricate a surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. It includes a green chemistry synthesis of Ag nanoparticles(NPs) and a process of coating a monolayer of the Ag NPs on a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) elastomer film. Ultra-low concentration of Ag + (10 -8 M) was used in Tollens method to synthesis monodisperse and relatively uniform Ag NPs. With recovery of the stretched PDMS film, the distribution of Ag NPs gets concentrated, resulting in an improvement of SERS detection sensitivity. Due to the transparent and flexible property of this highly sensitive SERS substrate, it exhibits great potential in in-situ detection of solid or irregular objects.

Abstract:An artificial oil/water interface was created in normal microemulsions. Various well-dispersed inorganic nanoparticles were successfully fabricated at this micelle interface, and a "hot liquid annealing" process was used to crystallize the products. Owing to the large solubility of the source materials in the water phase, the colloidal nanoparticles can easily be prepared on a large scale. Compared with traditional reverse-microemulsion methods, the method reported here yields larger amounts of colloidal particles but with the same quality.

Abstract:Detection and quantification of extremely small amount of oil on site and at low cost has broad applications in environmental monitoring, both in oil spills as well as in routine marine/coastal ecosystem monitoring. For example, dispersed oil, generated through the use of chemical dispersants in oil spills to break up oil slick into small droplets so that they can be rapidly diluted in 3D space, are the greatest concern and poses the most challenges in detection. Fluorometry is the current standard method, however is bulky and expensive, limiting its wide deployment in the field. Here we demonstrate for the first time the development of an acoustic standing wave based microfluidic platform capable of processing large amount of liquid samples from which dispersed oil can be concentrated and separated to a detectable level by acoustophoretic force. The microfluidic platform consists of a recirculation channel structure into which dispersed oil droplets can be continuously separated from the main sample flow stream. A piezoelectric transducer attached at the bottom of the silicon-glass microfluidic channel creates the acoustic standing wave that exerts acoustophoretic force to oil droplets. An optical detector measures the presence of concentrated oil droplets by their distinct fluorescent signatures.
