Abstract:We describe the self-assembly of silver nanocubes (AgNC) into dense bowl-shaped arrays using a template made from polystyrene nanospheres (PSNS). Interestingly, we found that most AgNCs were arranged facet-to-facet. When used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), we observed that the SERS hot spot positions were located at the corners of the cubes. This was confirmed using the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) covering the cubes' facet surface, whilst the pinholes in the DDT SAM at the corners were subsequently filled with 2-mercaptopyridine (MPy). Due to the high enhancement from the densely arranged AgNCs, single molecule detection was achieved from this SERS substrate and evidenced using the bi-analyte Raman technique.

Abstract:Nutrient pollution is of worldwide environmental and health concerns due to extensive use of nitrogen fertilizers and release of livestock waste, which induces nitrite compounds in aquatic systems. Herein a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is developed for nitrite detection based on coupling between the plasmonic gold nanostars and the silver nanopyramid array. When nitrite is present in the assay, an azo group is formed between the 1-naphthylamine-functionalized silver nanopyramids and the 4-aminothiophenol-functionalized gold nanostars. This not only generates the SERS spectral fingerprint for selective detection, but also creates "hot spots" at the gap between the Au nanostars and the Ag nanopyramids where the azo group is located, amplifying SERS signals remarkably. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation shows a SERS enhancement factor of 4 × 1010 at the "hot spots". As a result, the SERS sensor achieves a limit of detection of 0.6 pg/mL toward nitrite in water, and enables nitrite detection in real-world river water samples. In addition, this sensor eliminates the use of any Raman reporter and any expensive molecular recognition probe such as antibody and aptamer. This highly sensitive, selective and inexpensive SERS sensor has unique advantages over colorimetric, electrochemical and fluorescent devices for small molecule detection.

Abstract:There dimensional (3D) metallic nanohybrids have attracted attentions for the applications in nanophotonic devices, catalysis and biosensor. Here, the 3D suspended Ag nanoparticles/Carbon nanotubes (AgNPs/CNTs) nanohybrids, obtained by self-aggregating AgNPs onto the suspended CNT networks, are synthesized and used for the SERS application. The electric field distribution with the near-field and far-field coupling can be obtained by the optimization of the nanogaps of the AgNPs. Such suspended AgNPs/CNTs nanohybrids are studied to be used as the ultra-sensitive SERS biosensor, benefiting from the bio-compatibility and chemical absorption of the CNT networks and the EM enhancement of the 3D denser "hotspots". R6G molecules with a concentration as low as 10(-15) M can be clearly detected, demonstrating their excellent Raman enhancement.
Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Silica Nanospheres and Arrays as Potential Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as both a modifier and reductant to in situ deposit silver nanoparticles (denoted Ag NPs) on the surface of silica nanospheres (nanosilica or nano-SiO2), affording Ag-decorated nanosilica (denoted SiO2@Ag). The as-obtained SiO2@Ag composite can form silver nanoparticle-decorated silica nanosphere arrays (denoted SiO2@Ag arrays) via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array were used as the SERS substrates to measure the Raman signals of the dilute solutions of rhodamine 6G (denoted R6G), an organic dye that is a potential pollutant to the environment. The findings indicate that the as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array as potential SERS substrates simultaneously exhibit a high degree of metal coverage and small size of Ag NPs as well as good stability and abundant "hot spots", which contributes to their desired Raman enhancement capacities. For the detection of trace R6G, they provide a limit of detection of as low as 10-9-10-11 M as well as good reproducibility, showing promising potential for monitoring chemical and biological molecules.

A novel controllable nanocyclic plasma coupled array in SERS trace detection of multi-component pollutants

Abstract:The development and design of a novel, uniform and highly active local electromagnetic field enhanced structure is crucial for expanding Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) applications. In this study, we developed Ag ring-coupled nanoarrays (Ag RCNAs) with controllable nanogaps using a substrate rotary evaporation coating technique with self-assembled polystyrene (PS) microspheres as templates. This straightforward and cost-effective method efficiently prepares plasma-coupled nanoarrays. Ag RCNAs demonstrated high sensitivity in detecting organic dyes, our prepared Ag RCNAs showed high sensitivity (with the limit of detection of 10-8 M), high signal reproducibility (with the relative standard deviation of 6.73 %). Furthermore, Ag RCNAs showed remarkable sensitivity to a broad spectrum of dyes in river water, indicating the large-area uniform and highly active circular-ring-shaped nanogaps can realize highly sensitive detection of various pollutants. This approach offers advantages in electromagnetic field enhancement, tunable nanogaps, uniformity, reproducibility, and recyclability, making it promising for applications in environmental monitoring, bioassays, food safety, and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful spectroscopic tool in quantitative analysis of molecules, where the substrate plays a critical role in determining the detection performance. Herein, a silver nanocubes/polyelectrolyte/gold film sandwich structure was prepared as a reproducible, high-performance SERS substrate by the water/oil interfacial assembly method. In addition to the hot spots on the nanocubes surface, the edge-to-edge interspace of the Ag nanocubes led to marked enhancement of the SERS intensity, with a limit of detection of 10−11 mol/L and limit of quantitation of 10−10 mol/L for crystal violet. When rhodamine 6G and crystal violet were co-adsorbed on the Ag nanocube surfaces, the characteristic SERS peaks of the two molecules remained well resolved and separated, and the peak intensities varied with the respective concentration, which could be exploited for concurrent detection of dual molecules. Results from this work indicate that organized ensembles of Ag nanocubes can serve as effective SERS substrate can for sensitive analysis for complex molecular systems.

Abstract:Cu2O nanospheres (NSs) were synthesized by modifying the glucose reduction method. Based on this method, Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs were further prepared by in situ reduction of HAuCl4 (via electron beam evaporation of Ag). With Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as probe, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) characteristics of the three samples were systematically studied. The experiment results showed that the enhancement factor (EF) of Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs as 1.25 × 108 (2.74 × 109) and the ultralow detection limit (LOD) as 8.07 × 10-12 (1.13 × 10-13) M for R6G. The excellent performance of SERS may be due to the charge transfer (CT) between metal-semiconductor (MS) molecules and the strong electromagnetic field (E-field) of each hot spot. In addition, discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulations were performed to simulate the E-field enhancement of the Cu2O and Cu2O/Au (Ag) NSs in a three-dimensional (3D) configuration. These further supported that the high SERS performance for R6G is because of the powerful E-field coupling between neighboring Au (Ag) NPs and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. The Cu2O/Ag NSs have potential in applications such as biomedicine, food safety, and environmental monitoring because of their high sensitivity and good reproducibility.
In-Situ Immobilization of Silver Nanoparticles on Self-Assembled Honeycomb-Patterned Films Enables Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Substrates

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important sustainable technique because of its ability to detect trace-level analytes including pesticides, heavy metals, explosives, proteins, pathogens, and other chemical and biological contaminants. In this paper, we report a facile approach to highly sensitive SERS substrates by combining hierarchically patterned micro- and nanostructures with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) adsorbed on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) surface. The patterned structures were fabricated using breath figures as dynamic templates in which polar block enriches at the rim of the pores. This characteristic of the breath figure method makes it possible to employ a simple coating technique to construct substrates decorated with Ag NPs, which have a diameter mostly ranging from 18 to 30 nm. Results indicate that the hierarchically ordered substrates show enhancement factors as high as 4 X 10(8). It is also found that the enhancement factors are concentration-dependent, relying on the ratio of the number of analytes to Ag NPs. Moreover, the prominent enhancement at Raman shift of similar to 614 cm(-1) has been observed, which will be useful in the detection of analytes such as some kinds of pesticides and viruses with characteristic peaks in this Raman shift range (e.g., adenovirus). This proposed approach provides an effective, reproducible, electroless, and facile method for preparing high-quality SERS substrates.
Utilization of microdroplets as optical lenses for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancement on localized silver nanoparticle-decorated porous silicon substrates

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a widely used analytical technique known for its high sensitivity and broad applicability. Despite its potential, SERS faces challenges related to detection sensitivity and reproducibility. This study proposes an innovative method to enhance SERS performance by employing water microdroplets as optical lenses on localized silver nanoparticle-decorated porous silicon (LocAg-PS) substrates. The hydrophobic nature of the LocAg-PS substrate not only ensures precise positioning of the microdroplet lenses on the silver nanoparticle grafted pad (AgNP pad) but also forms a plano-convex-like microdroplet lens for the focusing of the excitation laser and the collection of scattered light. Experimental results demonstrate that using microdroplet lenses enhances the SERS signal intensity and reproducibility, providing a rapid and cost-effective solution for advanced SERS analysis.
Nanoporous silver nanorods as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates

Abstract:Structures with dense nanopores are desirable as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing substrates because the nanopores can behave as both analyte containers and SERS-active sites (known as hot spots). Inspired by the dealloying process to prepare nanoporous structures through selectively removing active metals from their alloy, we developed a method to prepare nanoporous Ag nanorods through chemical reduction of the electrodeposited Ag7O8NO3 nanorods using a strong reducing agent (e.g., NaBH4). The length and the thickness of the Ag7O8NO3 nanorods could be controlled by the electrodeposition voltage and time. Nitrogen and oxygen elements were immediately removed from Ag7O8NO3 nanorods by the reducing agent, leaving behind a tremendous number of nanopores with a mean size of 20 nm, which can efficiently trap and enrich analytes. Meanwhile, the densely packed nanopores can behave as SERS hot spots to provide strong SERS enhancement. The nanoporous Ag nanorods as SERS substrates were used to sensitively detect adenine, spike glycoprotein, and polychlorinated biphenyls pollutants, as well as identify different types of bacteria. The simple fabrication process and the outstanding SERS performance of the nanoporous Ag nanorods make them promising candidates for SERS applications towards trace detection of pollutants, narcotics, food additives, and biomolecules.

Abstract:Abstract Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has drawn attention for broad applications. We successfully fabricated highly effective SERS structures via evaporation-induced self-assembly of blend nanoparticles containing sliver nanospheres (Ag NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) on a super-hydrophobic (SH) substrate. On the SH substrate, the droplets of the mixed aqueous solution of silver nanospheres (Ag NSs), gold nanorods (Au NRs), and probe molecules can preserve their spherical shape during the evaporation process, and the probe molecules (R6G) are confined into extremely small areas after solvent removal due to hydrophobicity-enhanced concentration effects. The Raman enhancement effect of the blend nanoparticles with 40 vol% Ag NSs is far higher than that of the other samples. The structure of the aggregated Ag NSs on the film-like Au NRs greatly enhances the SERS effect of Ag NSs, which is optimal for the blend system with 40 vol% Ag NSs. The SERS structure also displays excellent signal reproducibility (RSD < 10%) and low detection limits (0.5 nM). Thus, this work offers a simple and efficient strategy to fabricate a highly effective SERS structure with broad applications in environmental science, analytical chemistry, etc.

Abstract:Micro/nanoplastic pollution in the water environment has received great attention worldwide. The rapid identification and analysis of micro/nanoplastics are crucial steps for monitoring animal safety and protecting human health. Herein, we developed a novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor based on Co3O4/Co3S4/AgNPs array substrate for the detection and analysis of micro/nanoplastics. The semiconductor heterojunction-induced charge transfer, enhanced together with the electromagnetic enhancement of plasmon AgNPs, endow the sensor with high sensitivity, thus achieving exceptional analytical and detection capability for polystyrene (PS) nanospheres of different sizes ranging from 1 μm to 1 nm. The limits of detection (LOD) for PS nanospheres (size of 1 μm and 800 nm) was as low as 25 μg/mL, even with a portable Raman spectrometer. Additionally, the periodic Co3O4/Co3S4/AgNPs array generated high repeatability of Raman signals with relative standard deviation (RSD) values less than 7.6%. As proof of this concept, we further demonstrated the simulation detection of PS in actual water samples. We measured the SERS spectra of the different sizes and concentrations of PS spiked in lake water and city water. The results showed that the sensing platform realized trace detection of PS nanospheres in lake water with a detection limit of 14 μg/mL, and a quantitative detection of PS with linear relationship (R2 = 0.962). This SERS sensor has demonstrated fast analysis of PS nanospheres, which can provide a solid basis for the qualitative and quantitative detection of various micro/nanoplastics in the real water environments.

Facile synthesis of Ag NPs@MgO nanosheets for quantitative SERS-based detection and removal of hazardous organic pollutants

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly precise and non-invasive analytical method known for its ability to detect vibrational signatures of minute analytes with exceptional sensitivity. However, the efficacy of SERS is subject to substrate properties, and current methodologies face challenges in attaining consistent, replicable, and stable substrates to regulate plasma hot spots across a wide spectral range. This study introduces a straightforward and economical approach that incorporates monodispersed silver nanoparticles onto 2-D porous magnesium oxide nanosheets (Ag@MgO-NSs) through an in-situ process. The resulting nanocomposite, Ag@MgO-NSs, demonstrates substantial SERS enhancement owing to its distinctive plasmonic resonance. The effectiveness of this nanocomposite is exemplified by depositing diverse environmental pollutants as analytes, such as antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP), organic dyes like rhodamine 6G (R6G) and methylene blue (MB), and nitrogen-rich pollutant like melamine (MLN), onto the proposed substrate. The proposed nanocomposite features a 2-D porous structure, resulting in a larger surface area and consequently providing numerous adsorption sites for analytes. Moreover, engineering the active sites of the nanocomposite results in a higher number of hotspots, leading to an enhanced performance. The nanocomposite outperforms, exhibiting superior detection capabilities for R6G, MB, and MLN at concentrations of 10-6 M and CIP at concentration of 10-5 M, with impressive uniformity, reproducibility, stability, and analytical enhancement factors (EF) of 6.3 x 104, 2 x 104, 2.73 x 104 and 1.8 x 104 respectively. This approach provides a direct and cost-effective method for the detection of a broad spectrum of environmental pollutants and food additives, presenting potential applications across diverse domains. The detected environmental pollutants and food additives are removed through both catalytic degradation (R6G and MB) and adsorption (CIP and MLN).

Abstract:Trace analysis has great promise in the fields of disease diagnosis and environment protection. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has wide range of utilization due to its reliable fingerprint detection. However, the sensitivity of SERS still needs to be enhanced. Raman scattering of target molecules around hotspots, the area with extremely strong electromagnetic field, can be highly amplified. Therefore, to increase the density of hotspots is one of the major approaches for enhancing the detection sensitivity of target molecules. In this paper, an ordered array of Ag nanocubes was assembled on a thiol modified silicon substrate as a SERS substrate, which provided high-density hotspots. The detection sensitivity is demonstrated by the limit of detection, which is down to 10-6 nM with Rhodamine 6G as probe molecule. The wide linear range (10-7~10-13 M) and low relative standard deviation (< 6.48%) indicate the good reproducibility of the substrate. Furthermore, the substrate can be used for the detection of dye molecules in lake water. This method provides an approach for increasing hotspots of SERS substrate, which could be a promising method to achieve good reproducibility and high sensitivity.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) stands as an exceptionally sensitive spectroscopic method extensively employed in various research fields, such as environmental monitoring, molecular diagnosis, food safety, and biochemistry. The study of semiconductor/noble-metal based SERS substrates has exponentially increased due to the apparent enhancement of Raman signal intensity by the synergistic utilization of electromagnetic and charge transfer mechanisms through the enhanced plasmonic and vibronic characteristics. Constructing an optimal assembly as a SERS substrate is the purpose pursued by many researchers. Herein, we present a promising semiconductor/noble-metal nanocomposite by photoreduction of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the hydrothermally synthesized hierarchical α-Fe2O3 snowflakes (SFs) through the green photoreduction technique. Various analytical characterization methods were employed to examine the physiochemical characteristics of the α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag. The presented α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag based SERS substrate enables ultra-sensitive detection of antibiotic nitrofurazone (NFZ) with the extremely low limit of detection of 3.12 × 10–14 M, the utmost enhancement factor of 3.08 × 1012, satisfactory uniformity and high reproducibility. The excellent SERS activity of the synthesized α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag nanocomposite is owing to the generation of innumerable hotspots and the effective charge transfer for sublime Raman signal enhancement through the synergism of electromagnetic and charge transfer mechanisms. The α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag based SERS substrate shows high recovery rate in the range of 89.9–98.78 % for detection of NFZ in the pond water and the fish feed solution for real-sample analysis. The proposed strategy in our study can efficiently detect trace amounts of NFZ in physiological circumstances and could contribute to the advancement of ultra-sensitive SERS based detection techniques.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a bottom-up growth of Ag@SiO2/Ag core-shell nanosphere arrays with tunable SiO2 interior insulator and the optimized surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on a nanostructure performed with both high sensitivity and large-area uniformity. Their morphological, structural, and optical properties were characterized, and the induced SERS activities were investigated theoretically by the FDTD simulation and experimentally using analyte molecules. An ultrathin SiO2 shell with tunable thickness can be synthesized pinhole-free by a chemical vapor deposition, working as an interior insulator between the Ag core and Ag out-layer coating. A detection limit as low as 10−12 M and an enhancement factor up to 3 × 107 were obtained, and the SERS signal was highly reproducible with small standard deviation. The method opened up a way to create a new class of SERS activity sensor with high-density ‘hot spots’, and it may play an important role in device design and the corresponding biological and food safety monitoring applications. SiO2 Microsphere Array Coated by Ag Nanoparticles as Raman Enhancement Sensor with High Sensitivity and High Stability

Abstract:In this paper, a monolayer SiO2 microsphere (MS) array was self-assembled on a silicon substrate, and monolayer dense silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different particle sizes were transferred onto the single-layer SiO2 MS array using a liquid–liquid interface method. A double monolayer "Ag@SiO2" with high sensitivity and high uniformity was prepared as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The electromagnetic distribution on the Ag@SiO2 substrate was analyzed using the Lumerical FDTD (finite difference time domain) Solutions software and the corresponding theoretical enhancement factors were calculated. The experimental results show that a Ag@SiO2 sample with a AgNPs diameter of 30 nm has the maximal electric field value at the AgNPs gap. The limit of detection (LOD) is 10−16 mol/L for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) analytes and the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) can reach ~2.3 × 1013. Our sample also shows high uniformity, with the calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) of ~5.78%.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can boost the pristine Raman signal significantly which could be exploited for producing innovative sensing devices with advanced properties. However, the inherent complexity of SERS systems restricts their further applications in rapid detection, especially in situ detection in narrow areas. Here, we construct an efficient and flexible SERS-based Lab-on-Fiber (LOF) sensor by integrating Ag/Au nanocap arrays obtained by Ag/Au coating polystyrene nanospheres on the optical fiber face. We obtain rich "hot spots" at the nanogaps between neighboring nanocaps, and further achieve SERS performance with the assistance of laser-induced thermophoresis on the metal film that can achieve efficiency aggregation of detected molecules. We achieve a high Raman enhancement with a low detection limitation of 10−7 mol/L for the most efficient samples based on the above sensor. This sensor also exhibits good repeatability and stability under multiple detections, revealing the potential application for in situ detection based on the reflexivity of the optical fiber.

Abstract:Ag nanorods coated with an ultrathin HfO2 shell (Ag NRs@HfO2) were prepared for the synthesis of a versatile, robust, and easily recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. This substrate maximizes the high melting point of HfO2 shell and thus ensures the excellent plasmonic efficiency of Ag NRs. Thus, it possesses extraordinary thermal stability and SERS activity, which could act as a reusable and cost-effective SERS detector. After SERS detection, the regeneration of Ag NRs@HfO2 was achieved by annealing the substrate within several seconds. This procedure led to the thermal release of adsorbed molecules and resulted in a refreshed substrate for subsequent measurements. The composite substrate maintained its SERS efficiency well during multiple "detection-heating" cycles, hence demonstrating the stability and recyclability of Ag NRs@HfO2. Furthermore, in addition to revealing the feasibility of SERS sensing in liquids, Ag NRs@HfO2 also provided continuous real-time monitoring of vapor-phase samples at ultralow concentrations. This work provides a robust and renewable SERS sensor with advantages of high sensitivity, stability, cost effectiveness, and easy operation, which can be implemented for both aqueous and gaseous analyte detection and is thus an intriguing candidate for practical applications in environmental, industrial, and homeland security sensing fields.
