Abstract:Light hydrocarbons (C1–C4) are fundamental raw materials in the petroleum and chemical industry. Separation and purification of structurally similar paraffin/olefin/alkyne mixtures are important for the production of high-purity or even polymer-grade light hydrocarbons. However, traditional methods such as cryogenic distillation and solvent absorption are energy-intensive and environmentally unfriendly processes. Ionic liquids (ILs) as a new alternative to organic solvents have been proposed as promising green media for light hydrocarbon separation due to their unique tunable structures and physicochemical properties resulting from the variations of the cations and anions such as low volatility, high thermal stability, large liquidus range, good miscibility with light hydrocarbons, excellent molecular recognition ability and adjustable hydrophylicity/hydrophobicity. In this review, the recent progresses on the light hydrocarbon separation using ILs are summarized, and some parameters of ILs that influence the separation performance are discussed.
Ultrafiltration of Triglyceride from Biodiesel Using the Phase Diagram of Oil–fame–meoh

Abstract:To continuously obtain biodiesel of high purity, a membrane separator integrated with liquid–liquid extraction for the oil–FAME–MeOH system is studied. The liquid–liquid phase equilibrium data for the oil–FAME–MeOH are determined experimentally and compared with the general prediction of the modified UNIFAC. The tie line test demonstrates that composition of the methanol-rich phase is free of TG at 20°C. Using the continuous cross-flow ultrafiltration, the oil-rich phase can be rejected by the ceramic membranes while the methanol-rich phase permeates through the membranes. When the feed bulk composition is controlled within the two-phase zone, such as the oil:FAME:MeOH of 20:30:50wt.%, the permeate is found to be free of oil while the obtained permeate flux is higher than 300kg/m2h under the transmembrane pressure of 600mmHg and the inlet flow rate of 300ml/min at 20°C. By contrast, it shows almost no separation when the inlet concentration of oil–FAME–MeOH locates on its boundary line or within the single-phase zone. The quantitative filtration tests show that the compositions in the two liquid phases and the operating parameters are also considered simultaneously to screen the origin oil and get the FAME product of high purity.

Abstract:Selective separation of tocopherol homologues was performed by liquid−liquid extraction, using ionic liquids (ILs) as extractants in the presence of diluent. The distribution coefficients and selectivities of tocopherols in the biphasic system were determined. A selectivity of δ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol up to 21.3 was achieved when using [bmim]Cl as extractant diluted by methanol. Considering the structural differences of tocopherols, the separation mechanism based on the hydrogen-bonding interaction between IL’s anion and the −OH group on the tocopherols was proposed. The separation efficiency of IL was greatly affected by its anion, and followed the order [bmim]BF4 < [bmim]CF3SO3 < [bmim]Cl under the same conditions, which is consistent with the ascending order of IL’s hydrogen-bond basicity strengths.
Highly selective production of high purity methyl oleate biodiesel by silver-based deep eutectic solvent extraction

Abstract:High-purity methyl oleate is one of the important oleo-chemical products with a wide range of applications (e.g., biodiesel). In this study, an efficient extraction method based on a silver-based deep eutectic solvent (Ag-DES) has been developed for separating high purity (>98 %) methyl oleate from unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (e.g., camellia seed oil methyl esters). The rapid extraction method involving silver ions can selectively separate the unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by forming C = C double bond complexes with the unsaturated FAMEs. Ag-DES exhibited highly selectivity towards monounsaturated FAMEs (C18:1) and polyunsaturated FAMEs (C18:2, C18:3). The extraction conditions of Ag-DES were optimized and its recyclability was investigated. Under the optimal conditions (room temperature extraction for 10 min), the yield of high-purity methyl oleate (98.5 %) was greater than 60 %, while the selectivity of methyl oleate reached 48.07. The Ag-DES could be successfully recycled for 5 times without loss of extraction selectivity. Thus, this sustainable extraction can provide a simple method for producing a biodiesel with excellent oxidative stability.

Abstract:Aiming at obtaining greater value from the complicated composition of the bio-oil aqueous phase, solvents of increasing polarity were employed to sequentially separate the bio-oil aqueous phase using column chromatography. This not only relieved the catalyst deactivation, but also made it possible to obtain fractions rich in different chemical families to produce high-grade liquid fuels and valuable chemicals. Gas chromatography was adopted as a monitoring technology, and 11 fractions rich in different chemical families were obtained. The phenolic compounds in the aqueous phase were primarily eluted using dichloromethane. The strong polar benzenediols were enriched gradually in a dichloromethane fraction, and a high catechol content of 62.81% was achieved with the subsequent combination of a pH control method. Ethyl acetate gave three fractions, and pyrolytic sugars were the predominant compounds, whose highest content reached 67.86% in the third fraction. Further separation of the sugar-rich fraction using column chromatography could remove the residual phenolic compounds and furans and acquire a sugar fraction suitable for fermentation.

Abstract:The esterification of oleic acid with methanol as model reaction was carried out on behalf of the main component of fatty acids(FFAs) in waste frying oils,for the purpose of biodiesel synthesis,catalyzed by 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate(HSO4).The highest yield of methyl oleate in 97.5 % could be obtained under the optimal condition.The isolation of product esters could be accomplised through simple decantation from the biphasic system attributed to the immiscibility of HSO4 with organic esters.Four times reuse of ionic liquid without dramatic decrease in ester yield demonstrated the good stability and operability of HSO4.

Abstract:Biobutanol is a green solvent commonly used as gasoline additive. In this study, it is proposed the separation of azeotropic mixtures of butanol and n‐butyl ether (DBE) using ionic liquids (ILs). Suitable anions [AC]− and [H2PO4]− were screened by COSMO‐RS, and the effect of carbon chain length on the separation effect was investigated using quantum chemical calculations. It was found that the anion was primarily responsible for the separation effect, which grew as the carbon chain grew. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to verify the separation performance of the selected ILs. The separation effect of ILs was further verified using vapor–liquid phase equilibrium (VLE) experiments. The extractive distillation process with [PrMIM][AC] as the extractant was investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of ILs for the separation of butanol and DBE. This study analyzes the whole process from microscopic mechanism of action, which provides new ideas for the separation of alcohol‐ether systems.

Abstract:To describe a membrane separator for ternary mixtures of oil–FAME–MeOH, two models of UNIQUAC and support vector machine (SVM) are developed for the permeate composition and permeate flux, respectively. The UNIQUAC model is used to represent the liquid–liquid phase equilibrium of oil–FAME–MeOH. Its prediction results are consistent with the experimental data measured at the temperatures of 293, 313 and 333K, respectively. For this two-phase system, experimental results show that the oil-rich phase can be rejected by the ceramic membrane while the methanol-rich phase permeates through the membrane. The permeate composition is mainly determined by the feed bulk concentration, and therefore is consistent with the concentration of the methanol-rich phase predicted by the UNIQUAC model. On the other hand, the permeate flux under various operating conditions, such as feed concentrations, temperatures, inlet flow rates and transmembrane pressures, is modeled by the SVM algorithm. Unlike the general data-based neural network model, SVM is especially valuable in the present crossflow filtration problem of small sample sizes. By combining UNIQUAC and SVM with the experimental ultrafiltration of biodiesel mixtures, the predicted membrane separator performance shows no significant lack of fit, and continuous production of biodiesel with both high purity and maximal productivity is also discussed.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising solvents for separating aromatics from fuel oils. However, studies for separate polycyclic aromatics with ILs are rare and insufficient, and the impact of solute structure on extraction performance still needs to be determined. In this work, we use 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis([trifluoromethyl]sulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][NTF2]) as an extractant to separate 1‐methylnaphthalene, quinoline, and benzothiophene from dodecane mixtures. Liquid–liquid equilibrium experiments identified the optimal operating conditions. Nine solute molecules, including five alkanes and four aromatic hydrocarbons, were used to study the relationship between extraction performance and solute structure. Molecular dynamics simulation and quantum chemistry calculations gave a deep insight and reasonable interpretation of the structure‐performance relationship at the molecular level. An industrial‐scale extraction process was proposed. The IL can be easily regenerated using heptane as a back‐extractive solvent. A high‐purity fuel oil with aromatic content below 0.5 wt% is obtained after 8‐stage extraction.

Abstract:Long chain unsaturated fatty acids (LCUFAs) are important food components and dietary supplements due to their beneficial health effects. The key process to produce high-purity LCUFAs is to separate long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) with different degrees of unsaturation and chain lengths. This process faces great challenge because of similar physico-chemical properties of fatty acids concerned. In this work, fractional extraction is proposed to separate LCFAs, using eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), oleic acid (OA) and stearic acid (SA) as model LCFAs. COSMO-RS calculations were performed for fast extractant screening and exploring the potential separation mechanism. Satisfactory distribution coefficients and high selectivities were obtained in extraction equilibrium experiments. Simulation and experimental validation of fractional extraction were performed, and high purity and high yield of CLAs were obtained. EPA and DHA could be separated thoroughly from OA, though they could not be separated each other.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid extraction is an important kind of separation method that is based on the distribution of chemicals between two different liquid phases. Compared to other separation methods, liquid-liquid extraction often has unique advantages for the separation of chemicals that have high or similar boiling points, with relatively large capacity and low consumption of material and energy (Treybal, 1951). However, the kinds of extractants that could be used for liquid-liquid extraction process are relatively small at present, so only limited separation efficiency could be achieved for the separation of many mixtures, especially those having similar structures. Besides, the volatility of existing extractants or extraction solvents not only can bring contamination to the environment, but also can lead to difficulty on the recovery of extractant and subsequent purification of products when the solutes are also volatile. These problems have limited the application of liquid-liquid extraction to more separation processes. Using ionic liquids (ILs) as extractants may be a prospective solution to the above problems. The physicochemical properties of IL could be designed and adjusted task-specifically, so large separation selectivity may be achieved for various mixtures that need to be separated (Han & Armstrong, 2007). Moreover, the cohesive energy of ILs is always very large, so ILs are easy to form various immiscible liquid-liquid biphasic systems with other solvents (Marcus, 2010). Besides, the vapor pressures of ILs are extremely low, so ILs could be regarded as green extractants and the separation of ILs with volatile solutes could also be simplified (Welton, 1999). These characteristics have made ILs appropriate to be used as extractants in liquid-liquid extractions. Liquid-liquid extraction using IL as extractant has been studied by many researchers in recent years since the partition of substituted-benzene derivatives between water and a hydrophobic IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim]PF6) was initially reported (Huddleston et al., 1998). Abstract:Bio-oil obtained from hydrothermal liquefaction of Salix psammophila is a very complicated mixture with some highly valued chemicals. In order to separate the chemicals from bio-oil, solvent extraction using nine solvents with different polarities were investigated in detail. The bio-oil extraction yield of the nine solvents were from high to low: tetrahydrofuran > toluene > ethyl acetate > acetone > ether > methylene chloride > methanol > petroleum ether > n-hexane. Based on their extraction yield, an efficient solvent combination of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and tetrahydrofuran was used to separate the bio-oil through multistep extraction into three parts: light oil (26.13%), mid-weight oil (54.19%), and heavy oil (19.68%). These fractions were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that most of the highly valued chemicals were contained in the light oil; the mid-weight oil consisted of aromatic oligomer derived from the decomposition of lignin, which could be a promising candidate for partial substitute for petroleum-asphalt binder; the heavy oil was rich in alkanes.

Abstract:This article tries to provide a feasible approach to solving current problems of ionic liquid (IL) mediated liquid–liquid extraction such as large viscosity, relatively high polarity and considerable cost. The performance of IL–cosolvent mixtures instead of pure ILs as extractant was systematically studied for the first time, taking the extractive separation of tocopherol homologs as an example. The adjustment of separation efficiency through both the structures of IL and cosolvent and their relative amount was conducted. Moreover, the synergistic effect between IL and cosolvent was revealed. A large separation selectivity, adequate distribution coefficient, low viscosity, and low consumption of IL can be simultaneously achieved in the IL–cosolvent–hexane biphasic system. For example, while using the 2:98 [bmim]Cl–acetonitrile mixture (molar ratio) as the extractant (viscosity was only about 0.44mPas) at 303.15K, the selectivity of δ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol was 11.3, four times larger than that using pure acetonitrile, and the distribution coefficients of δ-, β&γ-, and α-tocopherol were 4.07, 2.02, and 0.36, respectively, at least eighteen times larger than those using pure [bmim]Cl. A quantitative correlation between the selectivities of different tocopherol homologs and the hydrogen-bond basicity of IL–cosolvent mixtures was established with a linear equation. Overall, this work demonstrated that improved separation efficiency might be achieved by using IL–cosolvent mixtures as extractant compared to using pure IL or pure cosolvent.
Separation, purification and composition analysis of bio oil from hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae

Abstract:In the present paper, the bio-oil produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of D. tertiolecta was divided into n-hexane, chloroform and diethyl ether fractions via solvent division at first, and then chloroform fraction was purified by column chromatography. The n-hexane and diethyl ether fractions were directly analyzed by GC-MS and FT-IR, while the separation products obtained from column chromatography of chloroform fraction were combined with secondary mass spectrometry and FT-IR to confirm the product information. The results showed that chloroform fraction can be divided into sixteen components including the petroleum ether fraction (A1) mainly in alkenes, petroleum ether:ethyl acetate fraction (A2) mainly in carboxylic acid, petroleum ether:acetone fraction (A3) mainly in amides, petroleum ether:methanol fraction (A4) mainly in higher alkanes, and methanol fraction (A5) mainly in amides. In addition, the product recovery was reached up to 91.38% after the purification via column chromatography. Meanwhile, some components, which cannot be directly detected by GC-MS, were identified after column chromatography. The results gave a comprehensive insight in the compositions of product obtained from microalgal liquefaction, which provided the basis on further understanding of HTL mechanism and bio-oil upgrading.
Liquid–Liquid Equilibrium of Sesame Fatty Acid (Ethyl and Methyl) Ester + Glycerol + Ethanol/Methanol Mixtures at Different Temperatures

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) behavior of sesame fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) and methyl ester (FAME) in combination with glycerol and the co-solvents ethanol and methanol. FAEE and FAME were produced through the transesterification of mechanically extracted and purified sesame oil, using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a homogeneous base catalyst. The reactions were conducted in ethanol and methanol to produce FAEE and FAME, respectively. Post-reaction, the products were separated and purified, followed by an analysis of the LLE behavior at 313.15 K and 323.15 K under atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa). The experimental process for the miscibility analysis utilized a jacketed glass cell adapted for this study. Miscibility limits or binodal curves were determined using the turbidity-point method. Tie lines were constructed by preparing mixtures of known concentrations within the two-phase region, which allowed the phases to separate after agitation. Samples from both phases were analyzed to determine their composition. This study revealed that higher temperatures promoted greater phase separation and enhanced the biodiesel purification process. The NRTL model effectively correlated the activity coefficients with the experimental data, showing good agreement, with a root-mean-square deviation of 3.5%. Additionally, the data quality was validated using Marcilla's method, which yielded an R2 value close to 1. Attraction factors and distribution coefficients were also calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the co-solvents as extraction agents. The findings indicated higher selectivity for methanol than for ethanol, with varying degrees of distribution among the co-solvents. These results offer significant insights into enhancing biodiesel production processes by considering the effects of co-solvents on the LLE properties of mixtures, ultimately contributing to more efficient and cost-effective biodiesel production.

Abstract:Natural zwitterionic compounds are widely used as surfactants, drugs and food additives. However, obtaining high-purity zwitterions from biomass remains challenging because of the presence of structurally similar homologues in plants. Here, we developed a novel extraction method to separate zwitterionic phospholipid homologues using ionic liquids (ILs) as extractants. A large distribution coefficient and excellent separation selectivity for phosphatidylcholine (PC) were achieved with hydroxyl-functionalized and carboxyl-functionalized ILs as the extractants. An effective IL-cosolvent extraction strategy was employed in this work to reduce the consumption of IL and improve the extraction efficiency. Additionally, the underlying extraction mechanism was explored using ab initio calculations and dynamic light scattering. The results indicated the existence of multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between the IL and both the negative and positive moieties of the zwitterion, and the formation of micelles in the IL-cosolvent mixture was also observed. In addition, the effects of the structure and concentration of ILs and the temperature on extraction performance were investigated, and the feasibility of recovery of ILs by electrodialysis was evaluated.

Abstract:In order to efficiently separate large-molecules and high-viscosity lipids from microalgal biomass without harmful solvents, a solvent-free lipid extraction method with subcritical water is proposed to break hydrogen bonds and hydrolyze microalgal lipids in a continuous flow reactor for acid-catalyzed biodiesel production. Crude oils were efficiently extracted from microalgal biomass with subcritical water and were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The solvent-free extraction efficiency from microalgal biomass treated with subcritical water at 260 degrees C and the percentage of crude oil capable of esterification, dramatically reached 72.3% and 44%, respectively. The acid-catalyzed esterification efficiency of crude oil extracted from microalgal biomass with subcritical water at 260 degrees C reached 98.4%, as compared to 48.4% for microalgal lipids extracted through a traditional process.

Abstract:The separation of a compound of interest from its structurally similar homologues is an important and challenging problem in producing high-purity natural products, such as the separation of genistein from other soybean isoflavone aglycone (SIA) homologues. The present work provided a novel method for separating genistein from its structurally similar homologues by ionic liquid (IL)-based liquid-liquid extraction using hydrophobic IL-water or hydrophilic IL/water-ethyl acetate biphasic systems. Factors that influence the distribution equilibrium of SIAs, including the structure and concentration of IL, pH value of the aqueous phase, and temperature, were investigated. Adequate distribution coefficients and selectivities over 7.0 were achieved with hydrophilic IL/water-ethyl acetate biphasic system. Through a laboratory-scale simulation of fractional extraction process containing four extraction stages and four scrubbing stages, genistein was separated from the SIA homologues with a purity of 95.3% and a recovery >90%.

Abstract:Effective separation methods must be developed before bio-oils become a source of chemical products or liquid fuels by further upgrading. Phase separation is one effective pathway to realize an initial isolation of bio-oils. When aqueous salt solutions are added, phase separation of the pyrolysis bio-oil can occur to form two different phases: the upper layer with high contents of water, acetic acid, and water-soluble compounds and the bottom layers with low water content and high lignin pyrolysis compounds [Song, Q-H.; Nie, J.-Q; Ren, M.-G.; Guo, Q-X Effective phase separation of biomass pyrolysis oils by adding aqueous salt solutions. Energy Fuels 2009, 23 (6), 3307-3312]. In this paper, the salt-induced phase separation of bio-oils with 20 kinds of salt solutions was investigated. On the basis of the dependence of the mass ratio of the bio-oil bottom layer to the whole bio-oil sample upon the salt solution concentrations, it has been demonstrated that the phase separation derives from a normal ionic strength effect as well as chemical properties for some metal ions. Solvent fractionations of the two-phase bio-oils were performed, and fractions were characterized by elemental and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. Among the four bottom-layer bio-oil fractions, fraction A contains insoluble macromolecular substances, such as cellulose, and fractions, B, C, and D are mainly phenolic compounds. Furthermore, O-methylation of the mixtures of fractions B, C, and D with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has been performed in ionic liquid [Bmin] Cl, and the reaction is highly effective and recyclable for the ionic liquid. The modified mixture of the fractions reveals a large elevation in the heating value.

Abstract:The excessive utilization of petroleum resources leads to global warming, crude oil price fluctuations, and fast depletion of petroleum reserves. Biodiesel (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester, FAME) has gained importance as a clean and renewable energy source over the last few years. It is produced by reacting vegetable oils and short-chain alcohols via transesterification/esterification reaction. The properties of biodiesel depend on the vegetable oils’ fatty acid composition due to the saturated and unsaturated fatty acid content variation. During the FAME quantification analysis, separation of methyl palmitate (MeP) and methyl oleate (MeO) are major challenges in the C18 column in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). These components are difficult to quantify as they elute simultaneously by forming an overlapping peak. A new reverse-phase HPLC separation method with C18 column has been developed to efficiently separate and quantify FAMEs derived from palm oil. UV-VIS detector was used at 205 nm. The FAMEs separation was achieved using ternary mobile phase solvents acetonitrile, water, and acetone with the composition of 62%, 33%, and 5% in an isocratic flow with 2.20 mL/min flowrate and 45 °C column temperature. Methyl esters were analyzed with satisfactory linearity (r 2 >0.99), repeatability (relative standard deviation <2%), and sensitivity (limit of quantification).
