Even a tiny speed variation, when amplified by the cosmological distance, may be revealed by the observed time lags between photons with different energies from astrophysical sources. From the newly detected long gamma ray burst GRB 160509A, we find evidence to support the prediction for a linear form modification of light speed in cosmological space.

Regularity of High Energy Photon Events from Gamma Ray Bursts

Abstract:The effect of Quantum Gravity (QG) may bring a tiny light speed variation as v(E)=c(1−E/ELV), where E is the photon energy and ELV is a Lorentz violation scale. A remarkable regularity was suggested in previous studies to look for the light speed variation from high energy photon events of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). We provide a general analysis on the data of 25 bright GRBs observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). Such method allows a completed scan over all possibilities in a more clean and impartial way without any bias compared to previous intuitive analysis. The results show that with the increase in the intrinsic energies of photons, such regularity truly emerges and gradually becomes significant. For photons with intrinsic energies higher than 40 GeV, the regularity exists at a significance of 3–5 σ with ELV=3.6× 1017 GeV determined by the GRB data.

However, the effect of quantum gravity could bring an energy dependence of light speed, and a series of studies on high-energy photon events from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggest a light speed variation $v(E)=c\left(1-E / E_{\mathrm{LV}}\right)$ with $E_{\mathrm{LV}}=3.6 \times 10^{17} ~\mathrm{GeV}$ or a bound $E_{\mathrm{LV}} \ge 3.6 \times 10^{17} ~\mathrm{GeV}$. From the newly observed gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A, we find that a 99.3~GeV photon detected by Fermi-LAT is coincident with the sharp spike in the light curves detected by both Fermi-GBM and HEBS under the above scenario of light speed variation, suggesting an option that this high-energy photon was emitted at the same time as a sharp spike of low-energy photon emission at the GRB source. Thus this highest energy photon event detected by Fermi-LAT during the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts might be considered as an optional signal for the linear form modification of light speed in cosmological space.

Abstract:Recent studies on the high-energy photons from gamma-ray bursts~(GRBs) suggested a light speed variation $v(E)=c(1-E/E_{\mathrm{LV}})$ with $E_\mathrm{LV}=3.6\times 10^{17}$ GeV. We check this speed variation from previous observations on light curves of three active galactic nuclei (AGNs), namely Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) and PKS 2155-304. We show that several phenomena related to the light curves of these AGNs can serve as the supports for the light speed variation determined from GRBs.

Abstract:Previous researches on high-energy photon events from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) suggest a light speed variation v(E)=c(1−E/ELV) with ELV=3.6×1017 GeV, together with a pre-burst scenario that hight-energy photons come out about 10 seconds earlier than low-energy photons at the GRB source. However, in the Lorentz invariance violating scenario with an energy dependent light speed considered here, high-energy photons travel slower than low-energy photons due to the light speed variation, so that they are usually detected after low-energy photons in observed GRB data. Here we find four high-energy photon events which were observed earlier than low-energy photons from Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST), and analysis on these photon events supports the pre-burst scenario of high energy photons from GRBs and the energy dependence of light speed listed above.

Abstract:In some quantum gravity theories, a foamy structure of space-time may lead to Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). As the most energetic explosions in the Universe, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide an effect way to probe quantum gravity effects. In this paper, we use the continuous spectra of 20 short GRBs detected by the Swift satellite to give a conservative lower limit of quantum gravity energy scale MQG. Due to the LIV effect, photons with different energy have different velocities. This will lead to the delayed arrival of high energy photons relative to low energy ones. Based on the fact that the LIV-induced time delay cannot be longer than the duration of a GRB, we present the most conservative estimate of the quantum gravity energy scales from 20 short GRBs. The strictest constraint, MQG > 5.05×10 14 GeV in the linearly corrected case, is from GRB 140622A. Our constraint on MQG, although not as tight as previous results, is the safest and most reliable so far.

Abstract:We examine a method to detect the light speed variation from gamma ray burst data observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). We suggest new criteria to determine the characteristic time for low energy photons by the energy curve and the average energy curve respectively, and obtain similar results compared with those from the light curve. We offer a new criterion with both the light curve and the average energy curve to determine the characteristic time for low energy photons. We then apply the new criteria to the GBM NaI data, the GBM BGO data, and the LAT LLE data, and obtain consistent results for three different sets of low energy photons from different FERMI detectors.
High-Energy Gamma-Ray Afterglows from Low-Luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:The observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) such as 980425, 031203 and 060218, with luminosities much lower than those of other classic bursts, lead to the definition of a new class of GRBs -- low-luminosity GRBs. The nature of the outflow responsible for them is not clear yet. Two scenarios have been suggested: one is the conventional relativistic outflow with initial Lorentz factor of order of $\Gamma_0\ga 10$ and the other is a trans-relativistic outflow with $\Gamma_0\simeq 1-2$. Here we compare the high energy gamma-ray afterglow emission from these two different models, taking into account both synchrotron self inverse-Compton scattering (SSC) and the external inverse-Compton scattering due to photons from the cooling supernova or hypernova envelope (SNIC). We find that the conventional relativistic outflow model predicts a relatively high gamma-ray flux from SSC at early times ($<10^4 {\rm s}$ for typical parameters) with a rapidly decaying light curve, while in the trans-relativistic outflow model, one would expect a much flatter light curve of high-energy gamma-ray emission at early times, which could be dominated by both the SSC emission and SNIC emission, depending on the properties of the underlying supernova and the shock parameter $\epsilon_e$ and $\epsilon_B$. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope should be able to distinguish between the two models in the future.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The recent detection of gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A has attracted attention due to its record brightness and first-ever detection of $\gtrsim 10$ TeV gamma-rays from a GRB. Despite being the second-nearest GRB ever detected, at a redshift of $z=0.151$, the distance is large enough for severe attenuation of gamma-ray flux at these energies due to $\gamma \gamma \rightarrow e^\pm$ pair production with the extragalactic background light (EBL). Here, we investigate whether the presence of cosmic voids along the line of sight can significantly impact the detectability of very high energy (VHE, $\gt $100 GeV) gamma-rays from distant sources. Notably, we find that the gamma–gamma opacity for VHE gamma-rays can be reduced by approximately 10 per cent and up to 30 per cent at around 13 TeV, the highest-energy photon detected from GRB 221009A, for intervening cosmic voids along the line of sight with a combined radius of 110 Mpc, typically found from void catalogues, and 250 Mpc, respectively. This reduction is substantially higher for TeV photons compared to GeV photons, attributable to the broader target photon spectrum that TeV photons interact with. This finding implies that VHE photons are more susceptible to variations in the EBL spectrum, especially in regions dominated by cosmic voids. Our study sheds light on the detection of $\gtrsim 10$ TeV gamma-rays from GRB 221009A in particular, and on the detection of extragalactic VHE sources in general.

Abstract:The prompt emission mechanism of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is still unclear, and the time-resolved spectral analysis of GRBs is a powerful tool for studying their underlying physical processes. We performed a detailed time-resolved spectral analysis of 78 bright long GRB samples detected by Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). A total of 1490 spectra were obtained and their properties were studied using a typical Band-shape model. Firstly, the parameter distribution of the time-resolved spectrum given as follows: the low-energy spectral index $\alpha \sim -0.72$, high-energy spectral index $\beta \sim -2.42$, the peak energy $E_{\rm p} \sim 221.69 \,\rm{keV}$, and the energy flux $F \sim 7.49\times 10^{-6} \rm{\, erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. More than 80\% of the bursts exhibit the hardest low-energy spectral index $\alpha_{\rm max}$ exceeding the synchrotron limit (-2/3). Secondly, the evolution patterns of $\alpha$ and $E_{\rm p}$ were statistically analyzed. The results show that for multi-pulse GRBs the intensity-tracking pattern is more common than the hard-to-soft pattern in the evolution of both $E_{\rm p}$ and $\alpha$. The hard-to-soft pattern is generally shown in single-pulse GRBs or in the initial pulse of multi-pulse GRBs. Finally, we found a significant positive correlation between $F$ and $E_{\rm p}$, with half of the samples exhibiting a positive correlation between $F$ and $\alpha$. We discussed the spectral evolution of different radiation models. The diversity of spectral evolution patterns indicates that there may be more than one radiation mechanism occurring in the gamma-ray burst radiation process, including photospheric radiation and synchrotron radiation. However, it may also involve only one radiation mechanism, but more complicated physical details need to be considered.

An unexpectedly low-redshift excess of Swift gamma-ray burst rate

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most violent explosions in the universe and can be used to explore the properties of the high-redshift universe. It is believed that long GRBs are associated with the deaths of massive stars. Therefore, it is possible to use GRBs to investigate the star formation rate (SFR). In this paper, we use Lynden-Bell's c-method to study the luminosity function and rate of Swift long GRBs without any assumptions. We find that the luminosities of GRBs evolve with redshift as L(z) proportional to g(z) = (1 + z)(k) with k = 2.43(-0.38)(+0.41). After correcting the redshift evolution through L-0(z) = L(z)/g(z), the luminosity function can be expressed as psi(L-0) proportional to L-0(-0.14 +/- 0.02) for dim GRBs and psi(L-0) proportional to L0(-0.70 +/- 0.03) for bright GRBs, with the break point L-0(b) = 1.43 x 10(51) erg s(-1) . We also find that the formation rate of GRBs is almost constant at z < 1.0 for the first time, which is remarkably different from the SFR. At z > 1.0, the formation rate of GRBs is consistent with the SFR. Our results are dramatically different from previous studies. We discuss a few possible reasons for this low-redshift excess. We also test the robustness of our results using Monte Carlo simulations. The distributions of mock data (i.e., luminosity-redshift distribution, luminosity function, cumulative distribution, and log N-log S distribution) are in good agreement with observations. Also, we find that there are remarkable differences between the mock data and the observations if long GRBs are unbiased tracers of SFR at z < 1.0.
Very-high-energy Emission and Cascade Radiation of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows: Homogeneous Versus Wind External Media

Abstract:Recent detection of sub-TeV emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) represents a breakthrough in the GRB study. The multiwavelength data of the afterglows of GRB 190114C support the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) origin for its sub-TeV emission. We present a comparative analysis on the SSC emission of GRB afterglows in the homogeneous and wind environments in the framework of the forward shock model. The gamma gamma absorption of very-high-energy photons due to pair production within the source and the Klein-Nishina effect on the inverse Compton scattering are considered. Generally a higher SSC flux is expected for a larger circum-burst density due to a larger Compton parameter, but meanwhile the internal gamma gamma absorption is more severe for sub-TeV emission. The flux ratio between the SSC component and the synchrotron component decreases more quickly with time in the wind medium case than in the homogeneous density medium case. The light curves of the SSC emission are also different for the two types of media. We also calculate the cascade emission resulting from the absorbed high-energy photons. In the ISM environment with n greater than or similar to 1 cm(-3), the cascade synchrotron emission could be comparable to the synchrotron emission of the primary electrons in the optical band, which may flatten the optical afterglow light curve at an early time (t < 1 hr). In the wind medium with A(*) greater than or similar to 0.1, the cascade emission in the eV-GeV band is comparable or even larger than the emission of the primary electrons at the early time.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to 8.8×10^54 erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations of GRBs, and implications for constraining the cosmological parameters and dark energy. Observations show that the progenitors of long GRBs are massive stars. So it is expected that long GRBs are tracers of star formation rate. We also review the high-redshift star formation rate derived from GRBs, and implications for the cosmic reionization history. The afterglows of GRBs generally have broken power-law spectra, so it is possible to extract intergalactic medium (IGM) absorption features. We also present the capability of high-redshift GRBs to probe the pre-galactic metal enrichment and the first stars.
Model-Independent Multi-Variable Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Indicator and Its Possible Cosmological Implications

Abstract:Without imposing any theoretical models and assumptions, we present a multivariable regression analysis to several observable quantities for a sample of 15 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The observables used in the analysis include the isotropic gamma-ray energy (E-gamma,E- iso), the peak energy of the nu F-nu spectrum in the rest frame (E-p'), and the rest-frame break time of the optical afterglow light curves (t(b)'). A strong dependence of E gamma,iso on E-p' and t(b)' is derived, which reads E-gamma,E- iso/10(52) ergs (0.85 +/- 0.21)(E-p'/100 keV)(1.94+/-0.17)(t(b)'/1 day)(-1.24+/-0.23) in a flat universe with Omega(M) = 0.28 and H-0 = 71.3 km s(-1) Mpc(-1). We also extend the analysis to the isotropic afterglow energies in the X-ray and optical bands, respectively, and find that they are essentially not correlated with E-p' and t(b)' . Regarding the E-gamma,E-iso(E-p', t(b)') relationship as a luminosity indicator, we explore the possible constraints on the cosmological parameters using the GRB sample. Since there is no low-redshift GRB sample to calibrate this relationship, we weight the probability of using the relationship in each cosmology to serve as a standard candle by chi(2) statistics and then use this cosmology-weighted standard candle to evaluate cosmological parameters. Our results indicate that 0.05 < Omega(M) < 0.50 at the 1 sigma level, with the most probable value of Omega(M) being 0.28. The best value of Omega(Lambda) is 0.64, but it is less constrained. Only a loose limit of Omega(Lambda) < 1.2 is obtained at the 1 sigma level. In the case of a flat universe, the 1 sigma constraints are 0.13 < Omega(M) < 0.49 and 0.50 < Omega(Lambda) < 0.85, respectively. The deceleration factor (q) and its cosmological evolution (dq/dz) are also investigated with an evolutionary form of q = q(0) + z dq/dz. The best-fit values are (q(0), dq/dz) = (-1.00, 1.12), with -2.23 < q(0) < 0.26 and -0.07 < dq/dz < 3.48 at the 1 sigma level. The inferred transition redshift between the deceleration and acceleration phases is 0.78(-0.23)(+0.32) (1 sigma). Through Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the GRB sample satisfying our relationship observationally tends to be a soft and bright one and that the constraints on the cosmological parameters can be much improved either by enlarging the sample size or by increasing the observational precision. Although the sample may not expand significantly in the Swift era, a significant increase of the sample is expected in the long-term future. Our simulations indicate that with a sample of 50 GRBs satisfying our multivariable standard candle, one can achieve a constraint to the cosmological parameters comparable to that derived from 157 Type Ia supernovae. Furthermore, the detections of a few high-redshift GRBs satisfying the correlation could greatly tighten the constraints. Identifying high-z GRBs and measuring their E-p' and t(b)' are therefore essential for the GRB cosmology in the Swift era.
Are gamma-ray bursts the same at high redshift and low redshift?

Abstract:The majority of Swift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed at z > 6 have prompt durations of T90 < 30s, which, at first sight, is surprising given that cosmological time-dilation means this corresponds to < 5s in their rest frames. We have tested whether these high-redshift GRBs are consistent with being drawn from the same population as those observed at low-redshift by comparing them to an artificially red-shifted sample of 114 z < 4 bursts. This is accomplished using two methods to produce realistic high-z simulations of light curves based on the observed characteristics of the low-z sample. In Method 1 we use the Swift/BAT data directly, taking the photons detected in the harder bands to predict what would be seen in the softest energy band if the burst were seen at higher-z. In Method 2 we fit the light curves with a model, and use that to extrapolate the expected behaviour over the whole BAT energy range at any redshift. Based on the results of Method 2, a K-S test of their durations finds a ~1% probability that the high-z GRB sample is drawn from the same population as the bright low-z sample. Although apparently marginally significant, we must bear in mind that this test was partially a posteriori, since the rest-frame short durations of several high-z bursts motivated the study in the first instance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Intrinsic variability was searched for in arrival times of six gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at high energies – between 30 MeV and 2 GeV – detected by the Fermi satellite’s Large Area Telescope (LAT). The GRBs were selected from the Fermi LAT catalogue with preference for events with numerous photons, a strong initial pulse, and measured redshifts. Three long GRBs and three short GRBs were selected and tested. Two different variability-detection algorithms were deployed, one counting photons in pairs, and the other multiplying time gaps between photons. In both tests, a real GRB was compared to 1000 Monte Carlo versions of itself smoothed over a wide range of different time-scales. The minimum detected variability time-scales for long bursts (GRB 080916C, GRB 090926A, GRB 131108A) was found to be (0.005, 10.0, 10.0) s for the photon pair test and (2.0, 20.0, 10.0) s for the time-gap multiplication test. Additionally, the minimum detected variability time-scales for the short bursts (GRB 090510, GRB 140619B, GRB 160709A) was found to be (0.05, 0.01, 20.0) s for the photon pair test and (0.05, 0.01, 20.0) s for the gap multiplication test. Statistical uncertainties in these times are about a factor of 2. The durations of these variability time-scales may be used to constrain the geometry, dynamics, speed, cosmological dispersion, Lorentz-invariance violations, weak equivalence principle violations, and GRB models.

Multiwavelength Afterglow Analysis of GRB 221009A: Unveiling the Evolution of a Cooling Break in a Wind-like Medium

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic explosions in the universe, and their afterglow emission provides an opportunity to probe the physics of relativistic shock waves in an extreme environment. Several key pieces for completing the picture of the GRB afterglow physics are still missing, including jet properties, emission mechanism, and particle acceleration. Here we present a study of the afterglow emission of GRB 221009A, the most energetic GRB ever observed. Using optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray data up to approximately two days after the trigger, we trace the evolution of the multi-wavelength spectrum and the physical parameters behind the emission process. The broadband spectrum is consistent with the synchrotron emission emitted by relativistic electrons with its index of $p = 2.29\pm 0.02$. We identify a break energy at keV and an exponential cutoff at GeV in the observed multi-wavelength spectrum. The break energy increases in time from $16.0_{-4.9}^{+7.1}$ keV at 0.65 days to $46.8_{-15.5}^{+25.0}$ keV at 1.68 days, favoring a stellar wind-like profile of the circumburst medium with $k=2.4\pm0.1$ as in $\rho (r) \propto r^{-k}$. The high-energy attenuation at around 0.4 to 4 GeV is attributed to the maximum of the particle acceleration in the relativistic shock wave. This study confirms that the synchrotron process can explain the multi-wavelength afterglow emission and its evolution.
