Abstract:Systematic variations of average observational characteristics and correlation properties between different parameters of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time from 1991 April to 1994 September are revealed. It is hard to explain the observed long-term variability by variations of experimental conditions. The variability of GRB properties with the time scale of months to years, together with the similarity between GRBs, solar hard X-ray flares and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, may indicate an origin of GRBs, at least partly, within the heliosphere. Large-voltage and high-temperature pinch plasma columns produced by disruptive electrical discharges in the outer heliosphere can generate hard X-ray and gamma-ray flashes with energy spectra and spectral evolution characters consistent with that observed in GRBs.

Abstract:We show that simple kinematic arguments can give limits on the timescale and amplitude of variabilities in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, especially when the variability timescale is shorter than the observed time since the burst, Delta t < t. These limits help us to identify the sources of afterglow variability. The afterglows of GRB 011211 and GRB 021004 marginally violate these limits. If such violation is confirmed by the Swift satellite, a possible explanation is that (1) the compact objects that power GRB jets continue to eject an intermittent outflow for a very long timescale (>= 1 day), (2) the GRB jet from the central engine has a temporal anisotropy with a large brightness contrast >= 10 and small angular structure >= 10(-2), or (3) many (>= 10(3)) regions fluctuate simultaneously in the emitting site.

Abstract:It is generally believed that the variability of photospheric emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) traces that of the jet power. This work further investigates the variability of photospheric emission in a variable jet. By setting a constant $\eta$ (dimensionless entropy of the jet), we find that the light curve of the photospheric emission shows a ``tracking'' pattern on the time profile of jet power. However, the relative variability is significantly low in the photospheric emission compared with that in the jet power. If the $\eta$ is genetic variable, the variability of the photospheric emission is not only limited by the jet power but also affected by $\eta$ strongly. It becomes complex and is generally different from that of the jet power. Moreover, the opposite phase may stand in the variabilities of the photospheric emission at different photon energies. We also find that the relative variability does not remain constant over the photon energies with an obvious reduction at a certain energy. This is consistent with the analysis of GRB 090902B in which an appreciable thermal component has been detected in a wide energy range. For several other GRBs coupling with the thermal component, we conservatively evaluate the variability of the thermal and non-thermal emission, respectively. Our results show that the relative variability of the thermal emission is likely comparable to that of the non-thermal emission for these bursts. In addition, the analysis of GRB~120323A reveals that the variability of the photospheric emission may be of the opposite phase from that of the non-thermal emission.

Abstract:At the dawn of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow era, a Cepheid-like correlation was discovered between time variability V and isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity Liso of the prompt emission of about a dozen long GRBs with measured redshift available at that time. Soon afterwards, the correlation was confirmed against a sample of about 30 GRBs, despite being affected by significant scatter. Unlike the minimum variability timescale (MVT), V measures the relative power of short-to-intermediate timescales. We aim to test the correlation using about two hundred long GRBs with spectroscopically measured redshift, detected by Swift, Fermi, and Konus/WIND, for which both observables can be accurately estimated. For all the selected GRBs, variability was calculated according to the original definition using the 64-ms background-subtracted light curves of Swift/BAT (Fermi/GBM) in the 15-150 (8-900) keV energy passband. Peak luminosities were either taken from literature or derived from modelling broad-band spectra acquired with either Konus/WIND or Fermi/GBM. The statistical significance of the correlation has weakened to <~2%, mostly due to the appearance of a number of smooth and luminous GRBs characterised by a relatively small V. At odds with most long GRBs, 3 out of 4 long-duration merger candidates have high V and low Liso. Luminosity is more tightly connected with shortest timescales measured by MVT rather than short-to-intermediate ones, measured by V. We discuss the implications on internal dissipation models and the role of the e+- photosphere. We identified a few, smooth GRBs with a single broad pulse and low V, that might have an external shock origin, in contrast with most GRBs. The combination of high variability (V>~0.1), low luminosity (Liso<~10^51 erg s^-1) and short MVT (<~ 0.1 s) could be a good indicator for a compact binary merger origin.

Evidence for Rapid Variability at High Energies in GRBs

Abstract:Intrinsic variability was searched for in arrival times of six gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at high energies -- between 30 MeV and 2 GeV -- detected by the Fermi satellite's Large Area Telescope (LAT). The GRBs were selected from the Fermi LAT catalog with preference for events with numerous photons, a strong initial pulse, and measured redshifts. Three long GRBs and three short GRBs were selected and tested. Two different variability-detection algorithms were deployed, one counting photons in pairs, and the other multiplying time gaps between photons. In both tests, a real GRB was compared to 1000 Monte-Carlo versions of itself smoothed over a wide range of different timescales. The minimum detected variability timescales for long bursts (GRB 080916C, GRB 090926A, GRB 131108A) was found to be (0.005, 10.0, 10.0) seconds for the photon pair test and (2.0, 20.0, 10.0) seconds for the time-gap multiplication test. Additionally, the minimum detected variability timescales for the short bursts (GRB 090510, GRB 140619B, GRB 160709A) was found to be (0.05, 0.01, 20.0) seconds for the photon pair test and (0.05, 0.01, 20.0) seconds for the gap multiplication test. Statistical uncertainties in these times are about a factor of 2. The durations of these variability timescales may be used to constrain the geometry, dynamics, speed, cosmological dispersion, Lorentz-invariance violations, weak equivalence principle violations, and GRB models.

Abstract:The recent discovery of a kilonova from the long duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 211211A, challenges classification schemes based on temporal information alone. Gamma-ray properties of GRB 211211A reveal an extreme event, which stands out among both short and long GRBs. We find very short variations (few ms) in the lightcurve of GRB 211211A and estimate ~1000 for the Lorentz factor of the outflow. We discuss the relevance of the short variations in identifying similar long GRBs resulting from compact mergers. Our findings indicate that in future gravitational wave follow-up campaigns, some long duration GRBs should be treated as possible strong gravitational wave counterparts.

Abstract:Both gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and blazars have relativistic jets pointing at a small angle from our line of sight. Several recent studies suggested that these two kinds of sources may share similar jet physics. In this work, we explore the variability properties for GRBs and blazars as a whole. We find that the correlation between minimum variability time-scale (MTS) and Lorentz factor, Gamma, as found only in GRBs by Sonbas et al. can be extended to blazars with a joint correlation of MTS. alpha Gamma(-4.7 +/- 0.3). The same applies to the MTS. L-gamma(-1.0 +/- 0.1). correlation as found in GRBs, which can be well extended into blazars as well. These results provide further evidence that the jets in these two kinds of sources are similar despite of the very different mass scale of their central engines. Further investigations of the physical origin of these correlations are needed, which can shed light on the nature of the jet physics.
The correlations among variability, optical peak time and spectral time lag of long gamma-ray bursts

Abstract:Statistical relations are useful tools to comprehend the intrinsic physics processes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this work we collect spectral lag (tau), variability (V) and optical peak time (t(p,o)). We find that there is a correlation between variabilities and spectral lags, reading as V = -0.0075 (+/- 0.0007) x log(10) tau + 0.0351 (+/- 0.0024). There may also exist a relatively weak positive tendency between GRBs optical band peak times and their spectral time lags. Its Pearson coefficient is 0.398, which indicates a weak linear correlation. If we contain some "negative spectral lag" samples, then the latter relation would be worse due to two outlying points. The tau-V relation is consistent with previous studies, and the positive trend between tau and t(p,o) indicates the spectral lag of GRB might be caused by the curvature effect, but this conclusion is not significant.
A Further Study of the ${t}_{\mathrm{Burst}}$ of GRBs: Rest-frame Properties, External Plateau Contributions, and Multiple Parameter Analysis

Abstract:Zhang et al. propose to redefine the true gamma-ray burst (GRB) central engine activity duration, t(burst), by considering the contributions from the prompt gamma-ray emission, X-ray flare, and internal plateau features. With a comprehensive study of a large sample of Swift GRBs, it is shown that the tburst distribution in the observer frame consists of a bimodal feature, suggesting the existence of a new population of ultra-long GRBs. In this work, we make a series of further studies on t(burst): we update the Swift GRB sample up to 2016 June; we investigate the properties of t(burst) distribution in the rest frame; we redefine t(burst) by involving external plateau contributions; and we make a multiple parameter analysis to investigate whether the bursts within the ultra-long population are statistically different in the sense of other features besides the duration distribution. We find that for all situations, the distribution of t(burst) requires two normal distributions in logarithmic space to provide a good fit both in the observer frame and in the rest frame. Considering the observational gap effect would not completely erase the bimodal distribution feature. However, the bursts within the ultra-long population may have no statistical difference in the sense of other features besides the duration term. We thus suggest that if the ultra-long population of GRBs indeed exists, their central engine and radiation mechanisms should be similar to those of the normal population, but they have a longer central engine activity timescale.

Correlations Between Various Hardness Ratios Of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:We study correlations between various hardness ratios of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and investigate if there are any differences between the short- and long-duration classes of the objects in the distributions of the ratios. The results show that most of the hardness ratios are mutually correlated, but that the ratio defined at the lower energy bands is not correlated with those defined at the higher energy bands, the most significant correlations come from those ratios defined with both the lower and higher energy bands. It a also shown that the short-duration bursts tend to have higher values of hardness ratios. We reach these conclusions that the slope of the higher part of the spectrum of most GRBs is independent of that of the lower part; emissions at higher energy bands from the bursts of both short- and long-duration classes are significantly different for different sources, but radiations at lower energy bands are similar; the spectra of the short-duration bursts is harder than that of the long-duration bursts. A possible interpretation for these results involves Doppler boosting in the relativistic beaming model. In addition, the study reveals that hardness ratios of the long-duration class are more mutually correlated than these of the short-duration class; the data of hardness ratios for the long-duration class are much less scattered than those of the short-duration class. It is found that this difference is at least partially due to measurement errors.
Investigation on the Bimodal Distribution of the Duration of Gamma-ray Bursts from BATSE Light Curves

Abstract:We have investigated the bimodal distribution of the duration of BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by analyzing light curves of 64 ms time resolution. We define the average pulse width of GRBs from the auto-correlation function of GRB profiles. The distribution of the average pulse width of GRBs is bimodal, suggesting that GRBs are composed of long-pulse GRBs and short-pulse GRBs. The average pulse width of long-pulse GRBs appears correlated with the peak flux, consistent with the time dilation effect anticipated from the cosmological origin of GRBs. However, the correlation between the average pulse width and the peak flux for the short-pulse GRBs doesn't show such a tendency, which needs further study with higher time resolution data.
A Simple Two-Parameter Characterization of Gamma-Ray Burst Time Histories

Abstract:A simple scheme delineates Long GRBs with similar time histories using the Internal Luminosity Function power-law index and the spectral lag. Several generalizations are made about time history morphologies: 1) GRBs with long spectral lags contain fewer pulses that are broader than those found in bursts with short spectral lags, 2) short-lag bursts with small ILF power-law indices have many narrow pulses and are highly variable, while long-lag bursts with small ILF power-law indices are characterized by broad, smooth pulses and have low variability. GRB time history morphologies primarily identify intrinsic rather than extrinsic characteristics based on correlations with gamma-ray luminosity, afterglow luminosity, and numbers of pulses. These characteristics result because internal relativistic effects due to bulk Lorentz factor are larger than cosmological effects, and because the numbers and shapes of pulses indicate different efficiencies and forms of GRB energy release. Single-pulsed GRBs are characterized either by large ILF power indices (indicating a range of jet opening angles and Lorentz factors, with a FRED pulse shape), or they have long lags (large jet opening angles with low Lorentz factors, with either a FRED pulse shape or an unpeaked, smooth pulse shape). They also have lower-luminosity afterglows than multi-pulsed GRBs. GRBs with simple time histories are often associated with Type Ibc supernovae. This suggests that some single-pulsed GRBs contain single, beamed blast waves that are similar to and have characteristics that overlap with those of many supernovae. Such a connection may not exist between multi-pulsed GRBs and supernovae.

Time-resolved Spectral Properties of Fermi-GBM Bright Long Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:The prompt emission mechanism of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is still unclear, and the time-resolved spectral analysis of GRBs is a powerful tool for studying their underlying physical processes. We performed a detailed time-resolved spectral analysis of 78 bright long GRB samples detected by Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). A total of 1490 spectra were obtained and their properties were studied using a typical Band-shape model. Firstly, the parameter distribution of the time-resolved spectrum given as follows: the low-energy spectral index $\alpha \sim -0.72$, high-energy spectral index $\beta \sim -2.42$, the peak energy $E_{\rm p} \sim 221.69 \,\rm{keV}$, and the energy flux $F \sim 7.49\times 10^{-6} \rm{\, erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. More than 80\% of the bursts exhibit the hardest low-energy spectral index $\alpha_{\rm max}$ exceeding the synchrotron limit (-2/3). Secondly, the evolution patterns of $\alpha$ and $E_{\rm p}$ were statistically analyzed. The results show that for multi-pulse GRBs the intensity-tracking pattern is more common than the hard-to-soft pattern in the evolution of both $E_{\rm p}$ and $\alpha$. The hard-to-soft pattern is generally shown in single-pulse GRBs or in the initial pulse of multi-pulse GRBs. Finally, we found a significant positive correlation between $F$ and $E_{\rm p}$, with half of the samples exhibiting a positive correlation between $F$ and $\alpha$. We discussed the spectral evolution of different radiation models. The diversity of spectral evolution patterns indicates that there may be more than one radiation mechanism occurring in the gamma-ray burst radiation process, including photospheric radiation and synchrotron radiation. However, it may also involve only one radiation mechanism, but more complicated physical details need to be considered.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to 8.8×10^54 erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations of GRBs, and implications for constraining the cosmological parameters and dark energy. Observations show that the progenitors of long GRBs are massive stars. So it is expected that long GRBs are tracers of star formation rate. We also review the high-redshift star formation rate derived from GRBs, and implications for the cosmic reionization history. The afterglows of GRBs generally have broken power-law spectra, so it is possible to extract intergalactic medium (IGM) absorption features. We also present the capability of high-redshift GRBs to probe the pre-galactic metal enrichment and the first stars.
A Study of the Spectral Properties of Two Gamma-Ray Bursts with the Main Bursts and Postbursts

Abstract:The jet composition in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is still an unsolved issue. We try to provide some clues to the issue by analyzing the spectral properties of GRB 160509A and GRB 130427A with a main burst and a postburst. We first perform Bayesian time-resolved spectral analysis and compare the spectral components and spectral properties of the main bursts and postbursts of the two bursts and find that both bursts have the thermal components, and the thermal components are mainly found in the main bursts, while the postbursts are mainly dominated by the nonthermal components. We also find that the low-energy spectral indices of some time bins in the main bursts of these two GRBs exceed the so-called synchronous dead line, and in the postburst, only GRB 160509A has four time bins exceeding the dead line, while none of GRB 130427A exceed the dead line. We then constrain the outflow properties of both bursts and find that the main bursts is consistent with the typical properties of photosphere radiation. Therefore, our results support the transition of the GRB jet component from the fireball to the Poynting-flux-dominated jet. Finally, after analyzing the correlation and parameter evolution of the spectral parameters of the two bursts, we find that the correlations of the spectral parameters have different behaviors in the main bursts and postbursts. The parameter evolution trends of the main bursts and postbursts also show consistent and inconsistent behavior; therefore, we currently cannot determine whether the main bursts and postbursts come from the same origin.

Abstract:Abstract Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are highly variable and exhibit strong spectral evolution. In particular, the emission properties vary from pulse to pulse in multipulse bursts. Here we present a time-resolved Bayesian spectral analysis of a compilation of GRB pulses observed by the Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. The pulses are selected to have at least four time bins with a high statistical significance, which ensures that the spectral fits are well determined and spectral correlations can be established. The sample consists of 39 bursts, 117 pulses, and 1228 spectra. We confirm the general trend that pulses become softer over time, with mainly the low-energy power-law index α becoming smaller. A few exceptions to this trend exist, with the hardest pulse occurring at late times. The first pulse in a burst is clearly different from the later pulses; three-fourths of them violate the synchrotron line of death, while around half of them significantly prefer photospheric emission. These fractions decrease for subsequent pulses. We also find that in two-thirds of the pulses, the spectral parameters ( α and peak energy) track the light-curve variations. This is a larger fraction compared to what is found in previous samples. In conclusion, emission compatible with the GRB photosphere is typically found close to the trigger time, while the chance of detecting synchrotron emission is greatest at late times. This allows for the coexistence of emission mechanisms at late times.
