Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract:Herein, we report a catalyst system for Pd-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aroyl chlorides with boronic acids to furnish biaryls. This strategy is suitable for a broad range of common aroyl chlorides and boronic acids. The synthetic utility is highlighted in the direct late-stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products capitalizing on the presence of carboxylic acid moiety. Extensive mechanistic and DFT studies provide key insight into the reaction mechanism and high decarbonylative cross-coupling selectivity.

Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is among the most important C-C bond-forming reactions available due to its reliability, chemoselectivity, and diversity. Aryl halides and pseudohalides such as iodides, bromides, and triflates are traditionally used as the electrophilic coupling partner. The expansion of the reaction scope to nontraditional electrophiles is an ongoing challenge to enable an even greater number of useful products to be made from simple starting materials. Herein, we present how an NHC-based Pd catalyst can enable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling where the C(acyl)-O bond of aryl esters takes on the role of electrophile, allowing the synthesis of various ketone-containing products. This contrasts known reactions of similar esters that provide biaryls via nickel catalysis. The underlying cause of this mechanistic divergence is investigated by DFT calculations, and the robustness of esters compared to more electrophilic acylative coupling partners is analyzed.

Abstract:alpha-Trifluoromethyl alkenes can be used as peptide isosteres, moreover, the pre-installed vinyl group make it possible that transformation to diverse fluorine-containing unities. However, the cross-coupling of benzyl group with alpha-trifluoromethyl alkenes has yet to be developed. In this report, we describe a general method for the cross-coupling of benzylzinc reagents with 2-bromo-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (BTP) to afford diverse alpha-trifluoromethylalkene derivatives by using Pd(TFA)(2) as catalyst. This method takes advantage of cheap industrial available fluorine building blocks and easily prepared benzylzinc reagents to generate alpha-trifluoromethylalkene derivatives, which features with mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope and feasibility of product transformations.

Abstract:Efficient palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds and arylboronic acids or aryl halides have been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly for a range of diazo compounds, boronic acids, and halides. The coupling reaction conditions tolerate various substituents on the aromatic rings of the substrates, such as chloro, fluoro, acyl, oxo, ester, and nitro groups. This coupling reaction constitutes a novel access to alpha-aryl-substituted alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Mechanistically, palladium-carbene is supposed to be the key intermediate; its formation is followed by migratory insertion of an aryl group to the carbenic carbon of the palladium-carbene complex and subsequent beta-hydride elimination. Kinetic isotope effect (KIE) data measured for intra- and intermolecular competition experiments suggest that beta-hydride elimination is not involved in the rate-determining step.

Abstract:Palladium- and nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling recations of unactivated alkyl bromides with diboron reagents have been developed as practical methods for the synthesis of primary and secondary alkylboronic esters. These reactions extend the concept and utility of Pd- and Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of aliphatic electrophiles. They also show different substrate selectivity and ligand dependence as compared to the recently reported Cu-catalyzed borylation reaction.

Abstract:A palladium-catalysed aromative benzylic allylation and allenylation of benzyl chlorides with allyl and allenyl pinacolborates is described for the first time. The reactions proceed smoothly in the presence of a bidentate phosphine ligand to afford normal cross-coupling products in good yields. This novel synthetic procedure exhibits good tolerance for various electron-withdrawing and -donating functional groups linked to aromatic rings and is also well tolerant of sensitive functional groups such as NO 2 , CF 3 , CN, and COOMe. The utilisation of a bidentate ligand and heating are essential to transformation. The DFT calculation results reveal that wide-bite-angle bidentate ligands are beneficial to the formation of an η 1 -benzyl- η 1 -allylpalladium intermediate and that the normal coupling is thermodynamically favourable.

Abstract:By using PhSO2CF2H as the difluoromethylidene equivalent, a novel method for connecting aromatic aldehydes and arylboronic acids via consecutive reactions was developed to obtain structurally diverse 2,2-diaryl-1,1-difluoroethenes. The key step is the palladium-catalyzed dehydrosulfonylative cross-coupling of tosylates that are prepared from PhSO2CF2H, aromatic aldehydes and tosyl chloride. Mechanistic investigations showed that the reaction proceeds mainly through base-mediated dehydrosulfonylation followed by palladium-catalyzed C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling reaction.

Abstract:Rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H arylation of arenes with phenylboronic acid pinacol esters has been achieved using a readily removable N-pentafluorophenylbenzamide directing group for the first time. Abstract:A series of O, N-chelated diarylborinates have been prepared and tested as arylboron counterpart alternative to oxygen-labile diarylborinic acids in palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling of aryl chlorides. 3-Dimethylaminopropyl diarylborinates (B-5a), featuring a six-membered O, N-chelated boron ring that was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, displayed a delicately balanced stability and reactivity. Their cross-coupling with structurally various aryl chlorides could be effected as efficiently as that of the parent diarylborinic acids by using 0.1∼1mol% Pd(OAc)2/IPr/P(OPh)3 as catalyst system, to provide the corresponding biaryls in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Carbonylation with CO surrogates is one of the most common methods for introduction of carbonyl groups in ketone synthesis. However, arylhydrazides have not been used as an aryl source in this denitrogenative method even though they are cheap and accessible. Here, we report development of palladium catalysis for the three‐component reactions of arylboronic acids, CO‐surrogates (benzene‐1,3,5‐triyl triformate), and arylhydrazides under oxygen conditions to produce diaryl ketones. (Hetero)arylhydrazides, as well as (hetero)arylboronic acids are suitable reaction partners, and good functional group compatibility was achieved. This method could be used for streamlined synthesis of diaryl ketones, ketoprofen and fenofibrate.

Abstract:In the presence of Na2CO3 the combination of PdCl2(dppf), dppp and CuI catalyzes the decarbonylative coupling of arylcarboxylic acid 2-pyridyl esters with terminal alkynes to afford 1,2-disubstituted acetylenes. (Hetero)aryl, alkyl, and silylacetylenes and various electron-donor and -withdrawing group-substituted arylcarboxylic acid 2-pyridyl esters can be used in this transformation. A range of functional groups can be compatible.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of arenes bearing two or more potential coupling sites is often challenging because of the chemoselectivity issue. If orthogonal cross-couplings were applicable, one can develop a synthetically useful approach for consecutive functionalization of the starting arenes compounds. We herein reported a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of triazenyl-substituted aryl bromides catalyzed by PdCl2(PCy3)2/PPh3 under basic conditions. The resultant polyfunctionalized aryl triazenes could undergo Suzuki-Miyaura couplings under acidic conditions or be converted to many other functionalized arenes. This orthogonal coupling strategy allows for a sequential functionalization of arenes with same type of nucleophilic reagents toward the synthesis of diverse biaryls and teraryls.

Abstract:We report herein a palladium-catalyzed three-component cross-coupling reaction of 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, benzylic/allylic bromides and 1,1-bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methane. The reaction, which affords benzyl boronates as the products, represents the first example of using 1,1-bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methane in a cross-coupling reaction involving benzyne species.
