Abstract:A C-H arylation of thiopyran derivatives with aryl halides has been developed. Under the catalysis of Pd(OAc)2/Ag2CO3, the C-H arylation takes place at the α-position of the thiopyran ring. When dibromo-substituted compounds are used as reactants, double C-H arylations may occur on the same thiopyran ring at its α- and β-positions.

Abstract:A new strategy for the synthesis of 1,1-diaryl and triarylsubstituted alkenes has been developed utilizing B(C6F5)(3)-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynes with phenols. The method provides a direct route to ortho-alkenylated phenols with both terminal and internal alkynes. The reactions show excellent regioselectivity, and good stereoselectivity was observed for the hydroarylation of internal alkynes. Computational and experimental studies suggest that for the reaction of internal alkynes and phenols, an acid-catalyzed isomerization mechanism involving two tertiary carbonium ion intermediates is responsible for the formation of Z-triaryl substituted alkenes.

Abstract:Under different reaction conditions, 1,1-diarylpropadienes and 1,3-diarylpropynes can be prepared respectively by the sequential lithiation of 1-aryl-1-propynes, transmetalation, and the corresponding Pd(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling with aryl halides. A rationale for the formation of 1,3-diarylpropynes is proposed.

Abstract:A practical, efficient Pd(OAc)(2)/Cu(II)/PPh3 cocatalytic system has been developed. With only 1 mol% Pd(OAc)(2), 20 mol% copper(II) salt, and 0.5 equiv of inexpensive PPh3 as ligand, the direct arylation of benzoazoles with aryl bromides could be performed smoothly in mild condition, affording the desired arylated benzoazoles in good yields (75-93%).

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the Pd-catalyzed regio-selective hydroallylations of alkynes with allylborons: cooperation of Cu(OAc)2 and dppe resulting in 1,4-dienes while combination of AdCO2H and PCy3 leading to 1,5-dienes. A unified rationalization mechanism called "Lewis-acid-base-interaction promoted deprotonation/3,3-rearrangement" was proposed. Compared with the commonly reported metathesis pathway to only afford the metal-allyl intermediate, in the newly established mechanism, an additional Brønsted acid (as an initiator of the Pd0 oxidative addition) is generated by the interaction of the allylboron (Lewis acid) B atom with the nBuOH (Lewis base) O atom, and subsequent 3,3-rearrangement ensures the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction. In addition, it was found that excess Cu(OAc)2 plays two potential roles in the oxidative addition/alkyne insertion: (i) the participation of one AcO- of Cu(OAc)2 ensures a large orbital overlap between the migrating H and Pd atoms, facilitating the formal AcO-H cleavage and (ii) the extra (OAc)2Cu···O(carboxyl) σ-coordination indirectly contributes to the (Me)C≡C(Ph) insertion into the Pd-H bond. Further analysis showed that the origin of the regioselectivity is closely related to the employed phosphorus ligand. These revealed results, which have been overlooked in the previous documents, would aid the development of new related catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Palladium (II) catalyzed reactions of allyl propynoate in the presence of excess halide ions with or without allyl halide or acrolein were studied, yielding (E)-3-halo-2-allyl-acrylic acid as the sole product. A mechanism involving halopalladation, carbopalladation, ring opening and β-heteroatom elimination was proposed and was further justified by the reaction with deuterated substrate.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made on chelation-assisted α and β C–H functionalization of aryl alkenes; however, there is no report on C–H allylation reactions. This work focuses on the first α and β C–H allylation of aryl alkenes using allyl carbonates to produce linear and branched 1,4-dienes enabled by chelation-assistance of pyridine-2-carboxamide, simply performed with Pd(OAc) 2 /AcOH in ethanol. This operationally simple protocol exhibited wide functionality tolerance and broad substrate scope and enabled successful gram-scaled preparation.

Abstract:AbstractDespite much progress has been made in the asymmetric α‐arylation reactions of cyclic ketones, lactones and lactams, the enantioselective α‐arylation of acyclic carbonyl compounds lagged much behind due to the in situ generated Z/E‐enolate intermediates leading to opposite enantiomers. Especially, the asymmetric α‐arylation of acyclic aldehydes is a long‐standing challenge, because of the highest activity among carbonyl compounds leading to various competitive side reactions. Herein we reported an efficient Pd‐catalyzed asymmetric intermolecular α‐arylation reaction of α‐alkyl‐α‐aryl disubstituted aldehydes with aryl bromides, which provides a rapid access to chiral aldehydes bearing an α‐all‐carbon quaternary stereocenter in moderate to good yields with good er in most cases. In addition, a pair of enantiomers could be easily prepared with the use of the same ligand by exchanging the aryl groups of aldehyde and aryl bromide.

Abstract:A tandem arylation/oxidation of diarylmethanes for the convenient synthesis of unsymmetrical triarylmethanols bearing different aryl and heteroaryl groups is described. A Pd(OAc)(2)-NiXantphos catalyst system efficiently catalyzed arylation of weakly acidic sp(3)-hybridized C-H bonds of diarylmethanes with aryl bromides, and the arylation products were then oxidized in situ to carbinols by simply opening the reaction flasks to air. The triarylmethanol products were obtained in 35-98% yields. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of 2-alkylthiazoles is a well-known reaction affording the corresponding 2-alkyl-5-arylthiazoles in very high yields. Conversely, the reactivity of 2-alkoxythiazoles has not been described yet. Herein, we report conditions for the Pd-catalyzed regioselective C5-arylation of 2-alkoxythiazoles. Moreover, we also found reaction conditions leading to 3-alkyl-5-arylthiazol-2(3H)-ones via a one-pot direct arylation with an O- to N-alkyl migratory rearrangement. The judicious choice of reaction temperature and time allows control over the selectivity of the reaction. In general, at 100 °C, 2-alkoxy-5-arylthiazoles were the major products, whereas, at 120 °C with a longer reaction time, 3-alkyl-5-arylthiazol-2(3H)-ones were obtained with good selectivities. The arylation reaction is promoted by a ligand-free air-stable palladium catalyst and a simple and inexpensive base, without oxidant or further additives, and tolerates a variety of useful substituents on the aryl bromide and also heteroaryl bromides.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed reductive coupling between N-tosylhydrazones and aryl bromides has been developed. The reaction provides an efficient method for the synthesis of diarylmethanes and triarylmethanes via the formation of C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) single bonds. This new methodology for the synthesis of diarylmethanes and triarylmethanes is featured by the ready availability of the starting materials, mild reaction conditions, and the tolerance of wide range of functional groups. The reaction follows a pathway including palladium carbene formation, migratory insertion, and reduction of the alkylpalladium(II) intermediate.

Abstract:A Transition-metal-catalyzed selective hydroarylation of alkynes represents a state-of-the-art approach in organic chemistry. Herein, we report the reaction of symmetrical 1,3-diynes and arylboronic acids, with Pd(OAc)2 as the catalyst and PCy3 as the ligand, affording functionalized enynes in good to excellent yields. Its efficiency is demonstrated by its good functional groups and broad substrate scope. This method offers a general, convenient, and practical strategy for the modular synthesis of multisubstituted enynes. To comprehensively elucidate the mechanism of the Pd-based catalytic system in the hydroarylation of 1,3-diynes, we performed detailed DFT computations for the Pd-catalyzed hydroarylation reaction.

Abstract:Triarylmethanols are well-known core structures in natural products and pharmacologically relevant compounds. Triarylmethanols are well-known core structures in natural products and pharmacologically relevant compounds. In general, transition metal-based catalysts or highly reactive organometallics are employed for the synthesis of these compounds. Herein, we report the regioselective tandem C(sp 3 )–H arylation/oxidation of diarylmethanes with nitroarenes to generate arylated alcohols. The present method is general, mild, green, and conducted in air at room temperature. Furthermore, use of triarylmethanes as pro-nucleophiles provides straightforward access to select tetraarylmethanes through a cross-dehydrogenative coupling process.

Abstract:A palladium(II)-catalyzed Markovnikov hydroboration of aryl alkenes with readily available bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) is reported. The reaction proceeded with low catalyst loading (0.5 mol %) in the absence of N- or P-containing ligands, affording the products in up to 90% yield. Trifluoracetic acid serves as the hydrogen source, enabling the synthesis of benzylic boronic esters under mild ambient conditions.

Abstract:We report the synergistic combination of Pd(OAc)2 and Ag2O for the oxidative C–H arylation of (poly)fluoroarenes with aryl pinacol boronates (Ar‐Bpin) in DMF as the solvent. This procedure can be conducted easily in air, and without using additional ligands, to afford the fluorinated unsymmetrical biaryl products in up to 98% yield. Experimental studies suggest that the formation of [PdL2(C6F5)2] in DMF as coordinating solvent does not take place under the reaction conditions as it is stable to reductive elimination and thus would deactivate the catalyst. Thus, the intermediate [Pd(DMF)2(ArF)(Ar)] must be formed selectively to give desired arylation products. DFT calculations predict a low barrier (5.87 kcal/mol) for the concerted metalation deprotonation (CMD) process between C6F5H and the Pd(II) species formed after transmetalation between the Pd(II)X2 complex and aryl‐Bpin forms a Pd‐Arrich species; thus a Pd(Arrich)(Arpoor) complex is generated selectively which undergoes reductive elimination to generate the unsymmetrical biaryl product.
