Abstract:The emergence of H.264/AVC video compression standard provides better support functions for wireless network. The characteristics of limited bandwidth, high error rate of wireless channel and the constraints of computing and storage capacity of most mobile devices make the key technology of video codec in error resilience strategies, rate control, mode decision and scalable extension more important. In this paper, we first analyze the main and popular strategies in the key technology, and then we propose a method to choose and combine these strategies to validate the results and performance by experiment. Experiment shows the rational use of these technologies improves the quality of video transmission and provides reference for the video service evaluation.

Abstract:The characteristics of the mobile wireless network are limited bandwidth and high error rate, at same time the computing and storage capacity of the mobile devices are limited too. In order to ensure effective video compression and transmission, H.264/AVC standard provides the significant technologies and strategies in error resilience strategies, rate control, mode decision and scalable extension. On the basis of the detailed study in the strategies, a combination method is proposed, and experiment proves the quality of video transmission is improved at the same time the rate is reduced.
Real-time Video Transcoding System for Mobile Networks

Abstract:Video transcoding is emerging as a key technology to provide video streaming service for mobile devices on wireless networks when using video sources from broadband IPTV. This paper designs and develops a software implemented real-time video transcoding system which can convert high bit-rate,high resolution MPEG-4 video sources to low bit-rate,low resolution video in real-time to support video streaming over mobile networks. An adaptive transcoding scheme with delay guarantee is proposed in the paper based on the well-known drift compensation transcoding architecture. This scheme not only leverages the computation complexity and video quality but also ensures the extra delay caused by transcoding process. Experimental results illustrates that the system can achieve real-time transcoding with little quality degradation.

Abstract:Large-scale online streaming video application has gradually become the most important and potential technology of multimedia applications.Since Internet is heterogeneous and there is no Quality of Service(QoS)and security guarantee,large scale online streaming video application over the Internet faces many challenges.This paper,following the development of video sourcing coding and network transmission technology,comprehensively and deeply presents the scalable encoding and error-resilient encoding,and the development of multicast and P2P technology.Specially a new streaming architecture is proposed to satisfy the requirement of QoS,heterogeneity,and security guarantee in practical application.Some detailed analysis and comparisons are conducted in this paper.At last,future research direction is proposed.

Abstract:There are two new trends in today's computer technology that are attracting more and more attention. Oneis multimedia service,especially the video service. The other is mobile wireless computing. The former can be implemented efficiently on the traditional wired network,such as the accession of multimedia information,real-time broad-cast. But due to the limitation of the wireless environment,the latter hasn't been able to support the video transport efficiently. Obviously,the combination of these two technologies,video service over wireless network,may be a killer application and in turn advances both of them. This paper summarizes the challenges of this field and introduces some possible solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we study the key issues of the real-time video transfer system when applying multicast technology.First we introduce an application-level high-performance multicast transport protocol RTMTP to offer guarantees of real-time and stable video transmission.Second,we improve the management of flow control by adding the component Video Repeater,avoiding the traditional way in which centralized and inflexible methods are applied.Third,packet forwarding is achieved through hierarchical service control of Repeaters.Finally,the implementation of a solution is issued and the performance of a sample system based on it is tested.

Abstract:In order to support content-based video database access over the Internet Protocol (IP), achieving the following objectives are important: (i) video query by a representative object ( key object ) or some statistical characterization of the target contents, (ii) bandwidth-efficient browsing over IP, and (iii) scalable and user-centric video transmission over a heterogeneous and variable-bandwidth network. We present a video object extraction and scalable coding system designed to meet the above objectives. In our system, key objects of meaning to video database users are generated via a human-computer-interaction procedure, and are tracked across frames. Given a key object, an algorithm classifies a subset of its VOPs as key VOPs . This subset forms the basis of a highly bandwidth-efficient base layer for supporting activities such as browsing and refining queries. Over the base layer, a number of enhancement layers can be defined to progressively increase the spatial and temporal resolutions of retrieved video. It is expected that heterogeneous users can subscribe to different numbers of the enhancement layers according to their own conditions, such as access authorization, available connection bandwidth, and quality preference.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of video streaming applications,the use of Network Coding (NC) to improve the network performance and then to provide a better quality of video streaming is becoming a hot topic.In order to efficiently exploit the benefits of NC for video delivery,the proposed transmission strategies should be adapted for the characteristics of video traffic and the network environment should also be considered.Firstly,the basic concepts and methods of NC were presented.Then,a variety of NC based techniques that have been specifically designed for video streaming were analyzed and summarized into three main categories,including unequal error protection to give priority to important video packets,reducing packet transmission delay to meet realtime video streaming requirements,enhancing network error recovery strategy to improve transmission reliability.Thirdly,the applications of video streaming with NC in the P2P networks,multi-source cooperative and content-centric network scenarios were introduced respectively.Finally,based on this study,open issues and further research topics were elaborated.

Abstract:This paper reviews some recent advances in the video techniques such as video coding, video stream analysis, and video stream transportation etc. The survey clearly shows that while the standard compliant video coding is still attractive in application, new direction are wavelet/subband based video coding, and object oriented coding. The study on robust video transmission over IP and wireless network is the most challenging topic and of great importance. Besides, video stream analysis, image database technology and video watermark also possess bright application prospect. The paper also gives a brief introduction on the progresses and technical features of the newest standard H.26L of JVT.
