Abstract:In many large physics experiments and applications, the precision requirement of time interval measurement is higher and higher. This paper introduced the design of a high-precision time interval measurement instrument based on PCI bus. The instrument can implement system-check, channel-identification, and data-protection when system powers off, etc. Some pivotal technologies of the instrument are described, especially the delay locked loop and RC delay line time interpolator techniques. In the end, some parameters of the instrument are measured and given. The parameters of the instrument show that the resolution can reach 21 picosecond, and that the range of measurement is 51 microsecond at the same time.

Abstract:In the external target experiment for heavy ion collisions in the HIRFL-CSR, Multi-Wire Drift Chambers are used to measure the drift time of charged particles to obtain the track information. This 128-channel high precision time measurement module is designed to perform the time digitization. The data transfer is based on a PXI interface to guarantee a high data rate. Test results show that a 100 ps resolution with a data transfer rate up to 40 MBps has been achieved; this module has also been proven to function well with the detector through a commissioning test.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the modern communication industry, the vertical applications of the mobile network have put forward higher requirement for time synchronization. According to factors such as timing accuracy and cost, different application scenarios can adopt different timing methods. Network absolute time synchronization applies dedicated equipment, such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), or specific protocols, such as NTP (Network Time Protocol), PTP (Precision Time Protocol), SIB9 (System Information Block 9). There are requirements for timing accuracy up to microsecond level in the fields of IoT (Internet of things), autonomous driving, etc. The existing timing methods can hardly meet these demands. This paper studies the design and implementation of timing module based on TAP. This paper proposes a realization method by using hardware Kalman filter to cope with air interface delay jitter, and optimizes the efficiency of hardware processing link delay to meet the requirements of NR to improve the timing accuracy of TAP. The timing module is implemented based on FPGA, and the test results show that the timing accuracy of the timing module can reach to microsecond level.

This paper discusses a implementation of VXI message-based interface using programmable logic device and presents a new way of implementing high-speed data transfer by using FIFO, aiming at the slow data transfer speed of common VXI interface. The hardware circuits, control software and instrument driver are illustrated at large in this paper, and the experiment data and application result are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the electronics of a timing measurement system of PTB (portable TDC board), which is a handy tool based on USB interface, customized for high precision time measurements without any crates. The time digitization is based on the High Performance TDC Chip (HPTDC). The real-time compensation for HPTDC outputs and the USB master logic are implemented in an ALTERA's Cyclone FPGA. The architecture design and logic design are described in detail. Test of the system showed a time resolution of 13.3 Ps.
High Accurate Time Stamping Approach for Time Synchronization Within Networked Instrument Bus

Abstract:Networked Instrument Bus is a newly developed multi-master instrument bus protocol based on M-LVDS technology.The precise time protocol(PTP) based on IEEE-1588 on Networked Instrument Bus was introduced.In order to meet the higher time stamp accuracy,a new time stamping circuit for PTP was developed.The circuit detected SYNC message and Delay_Req message,and stamped the system time when these two messages were sent or received.The time stamping point was located between MAC layer and Media Independent Interface(MⅡ) to reduce asymmetry network delay.A test platform based on Xilinx's Virtex-5 series FPGA chip xc5vl30-1ff324 was developed.The test results indicate that the time stamping circuit using phase shift clock with PLL can a gain of time stamp resolution of 1 ns and time synchronization accuracy of 10 ns.

Review of Scientific Instruments

Abstract:Waveform digitization at sampling rates up to several giga-samples per second is one of the approaches to achieve high-precision time measurements. In recent years, achieving high precision at lower sampling rates has emerged as a significant research topic. In this article, we focus on time measurement electronics, in which the bandpass sampling method is applied to obtain high precision at a sampling rate of roughly 100 MSps. An analog front-end circuit is designed, in which the input pulse signal is bandpass-filtered and amplified before sampling. A pipelined real-time time extraction algorithm is designed using the techniques of interpolation and cross correlation. A 1024-point fast Fourier transform algorithm is adopted to implement the cross correlation operation. Four time measurement channels are implemented in a mid-range field-programmable gate array, and the measurement rate of 116 kHz is achieved. Tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of the timing system. The typical RMS precision is better than 0.4 ps.

Abstract:While HT-7 system is operational,a control scheme is needed to cooperate the subsystems in order to force them to run in proper timing.Central time system provides the trigger and timing signal。 The functionality and application of the central timer system in HT-7,based on VXI bus,is described.The hardware components of central timer system and the latest technology up-dates are also discussed.Adopting the new FPGA chip,a new module with 32-bits data bus is designed.The simulation results of this new trigger module are also given.The new module makes the integrated circuits simpler and controlled timer range wider.

Abstract:This paper presents a VXI bus-based high-speed digital image receiver module for an automatic testing system.The digital image signal is converted from RS-422A to standard TTL signal by using level conversion and optical isolation and then stored in the static RAM by FPGA.The image data is then passed through the VXI interface to PC by using DSP,and the DSP program is also outlined.

Abstract:As a bridge between embedded computer and VXI bus system,PCI-VXI slot 0 controller is of high importance to the whole system.The realization and implementation of the VXI controller based on embedded computer PCI bus is developed in this paper.The Interface module design and synchronization asynchronism transform module realization are presented specifically with the key technology on PCI-VXI bus transform and VXI slot 0 circuit.Now the VXI slot 0 controller has been successfully used in actual automatic measurement system.It is indicated through experiment that this system fully comply with the regulation of PCI and VXI,and is capable of realizing the whole PCI-VXI slot 0 controller function with stable performance which achieves expectant objective.

Abstract:A novel ring oscillator-based Vernier-type time interpolation method, known as the fine-timestamp maker, is proposed for field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based time-to-digital converters (TDCs). This method determines lower measurement dead time and improves resolution by using a bi-time interpolation scheme, first presented in this paper. Additionally, a group of cascaded delay units are packaged as an intellectual property core (DU-IP) to form a ring delay line and to adjust its length via the engineering change order (ECO) tool, which makes the adjustment of the ring oscillator’s frequency more linear and less position dependent. A prototype TDC was implemented on a Kintex-7 FPGA. The experimental results demonstrate that a single TDC channel only consumes 35 DFFs, 31 LUTs, and 16 CARRY4 logics after specific adjustment. The results, with a time resolution of 20 ps, dead time of 58 ns, and a root-mean-square error of 15–20 ps, show a significant performance improvement compared to traditional Vernier-type TDCs.

Abstract:According to the need of some test system,a high-accuracy frequency measuring module is designed based on PC104 and CPLD.A method of synchronous multi-period frequency measurement is used to achieve the equal precision measure to the tested frequency channel.The hardware circuit of the frequency measuring module is designed.And the detailed VHDL source code to achieve digital frequency using CPLD is given.The interface logic of PC104 bus is compiled using the way of schematic diagram,and the emulation is done by the software of MAXPLUSⅡ.The digital frequency and the interface logic are accurately working showed by the result.This frequency measuring module has been proved to be high-accurate,stable and reliable in the practical application.

Abstract:LXI is a new generation of instrument bus has precision clock synchronization performance.IEEE 1588 is one of its key technologies.The IEEE1588 principle is anlysised.And the'hard&soft'design based on FPGA hardware-assisted is used.The LXI instrumentation clock synchronization interface circuit and the FPGA logic designing is completed.The test result confirmed that this design enable the clock synchronization accuracy of LXI devices less then 200ns.
