Abstract:Aesthetic experience of the built environment involves all our senses: the sight of colour and form; the echo in a room; the smell of wood; the touch of handrails; the refreshing cool air on the skin, and so on. However, the definition of universal design sets no criteria for aesthetics, only stating the functional requirements that need to be met. The term for many architects and planners is still too closely associated with legislations, regulations, and standards. Buildings designed by some of the pioneers of modern architecture have been briefly mentioned in relation to universal design: Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright's use of the ramp as an architectural element, Mies van der Rohe's plans, the fluent transition between inside and outside, through which people may move easily and effortlessly, and Alvar Aalto's design of details, such as door handles suitable for people of varying heights. However, their architectural works have greater potential as sources of inspiration with respect to moving buildings in a universal direction. Rem Koolhaas' innovative design for a client with reduced mobility and his library projects are examples of how a contemporary architect has used Le Corbusier's architecture as a source of reference. This paper refers to or includes works made by the above-mentioned architects to illustrate universal design and thereby discusses architectural qualities and aesthetics in relation to the needs of people with reduced mobility, vision and hearing.

Abstract:Christopher Alexander offers a critical perspective on the modernist approach to architecture, which he argues has prioritized innovation, abstraction, and mechanistic efficiency at the expense of human-centered and organic values. This shift has led to the proliferation of buildings that, while visually striking, often feel cold, impersonal, and disconnected from the deeper needs of the people who inhabit them. Alexander advocates for a return to timeless architectural principles such as harmony, balance, and a deep connection to the natural and cultural context. He introduces the concept of living structure, which emphasizes creating spaces that resonate with the intrinsic order found in nature and human life, fostering environments that are not only functional and beautiful but also profoundly life-affirming. By challenging the dominance of "iconic" but alienating designs, Alexander calls for a holistic, human-centered approach to architecture-one that prioritizes the well-being of individuals and communities, creating spaces that nurture a sense of place, belonging, and harmony with the world around them.

Abstract:The paper emphasizes utmost importance to two theoretical arguments. Firstly," Culture is the soul of a city", secondly," Architecture is the symbol of culture." The paper points out the existing weakness of most Chinese cities is its similarity to each other in appearance, the so called" Peculiarity Crisis"." one face for a thousand cities". etc. The paper also puts forward three suggestions on dealing with this weakness: (1) to get rid of the sense of inferiority in culture, (2) to insist on searching for culture, climatic and geographical peculiarities of domestic architecture in designing. Do not forget to create something new, while inheriting excellent traditions, (3) application of the artistic principle of "Defamiliarization", that is, making things creatively, letting people get rid of the familiarization in feeling and looking at things in a surprising sight and poetic way. As a result, things originally have no fresh ideas will become brand new.

Abstract:AbstractArchitectural and aesthetic features of traditional Chinese architecture have been quite often demarcated by the influence of three branches of Chinese philosophical thought—Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. However, in this short paper it couldn’t include such an extensive scope. Therefore, the focus on one of three branches is necessary. First of all, in Section I of this paper, it attempts to introduce the design of traditional Chinese corridor functioning for connecting architecture and outdoor space. By this way, the meaning of “being” (you) and “non-being” (wu) of the Pre-Qin dynasty would be the central theme of the exploration. Secondly, in Section II, it intends to deeply investigate this pair of terms by the framework of a new term “Daoiast naturalism based on humanity” to contrast with another one “Western humanism based on God.” Section II mainly focuses on the analysis of the former in terms of Daoist metaphysics. Secion III begins with the exploration of main features of western humanism from the ancient Graeco-Roman tradition to Renaissance not inclusive of the Enlightenment, the modern time and the present. In Section IV, it chooses one of the greatest architect Brunelleschi’s masterpiece— Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore as the representative of Renaissance Italy to embody the harmonious, moderate combination of human creativity and the spirit of Christianity. Last but not least, in Conclusion it points out the supervenien relation between the western humanism and Daoist naturalism may renew the vision of lifeworld in which western and eastern cultures are merged into together.
