Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between serum iron and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). Methods A total of 2120 residents aged 40 years or older from Jiading District, Shanghai, were enrolled in this study. All subjects went through a standard questionnaire, anthropometric measurements and biochemical evaluation. NAFLD was defined by hepatic ultrasonography. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, chi-square test, linear regression and multivariate Logistic regression. Results The overall prevalence of NAFLD was 27.4%, and the prevalence increased with the elevation of serum iron from quartile 1 to quartile 4(20.8%, 29.2%, 28.4%, 31.2%, P for trend=0.0005). In Logistic regression analysis, compared with subjects in the lowest quartile of serum iron level, the odds ratio(OR) [95% confidence interval(CI)] in second quartile, third quartile and fourth quartile were 1.57(1.19-2.08), 1.51(1.14-2.00), and 1.72(1.30-2.28), respectively. After adjusted for confounders, the correlation remained significant and the adjusted OR were1.31(95%CI 0.91-1.89), 1.44(95%CI 0.99-2.09), 1.48(95%CI 1.01-2.19), respectively. Conclusions High serum iron level was correlated significantly with the prevalence of NAFLD in subjects aged 40 or older.
