Abstract:Objective To investigate the association between serum uric acid level and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in middle-aged and elderly population. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed among 2 519 subjects aged 40 years and older in Jiading community,Shanghai. All the subjects were recruited to undergo questionary interview, anthropometric measurements, abdominal color Doppler ultrasound examination and testing of fasting blood sample.NAFLD was diagnosed by high-resolution hepatic ultrasonography. Results NAFLD patients had significantly higher serum uric acid levels than those without NAFLD [(319.6±92.3) vs(272.8±88.8) μmol/L,P<0.000 1].Increased uric acid levels were associated with more unfavorable metabolic profiles. The prevalence of NAFLD increased linearly from quantile 1 to quantile 4,as 14.4%,23.6%,28.7% and 43.1%,respectively(P for trend <0.000 1).Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that elevated uric acid level was associated with an increased risk of NAFLD.When compared to quantile 1,the odds ratio(OR) [95% confidence interval(CI)] for NAFLD was 1.84(1.34-2.52),2.40(1.773.27),4.52(3.36-6.09) for quantiles 2,3,and 4,respectively.After adjusting for demographic parameters, serum lipid metabolism indexes and liver enzymes, subjects with hyperuricemia had a 64% increased risk of developing NAFLD(OR= 1.64,95% CI:1.10-2.44,P <0.05).Conclusions Elevated serum uric acid level was significantly associated with an increased risk of NAFLD in middle-aged and elderly population.
