Technology Strategy, Technological Context and Technological Catch-Up in Emerging Economies: Industry-Level Findings from Chinese Manufacturing

Abstract:Through an industry-level analysis of large- and medium-size Chinese manufacturing enterprises over the period of 1998–2006, we introduced a quantitative method to measure and identify industry-level technology strategy categories. We explored the effects of technology strategy, technological context (technology gap, technology development speed and FDI presence) and their interactions on technological catch-up performance in terms of product-related and knowledge-related performance. Regarding product-related catch-up performance, the empirical results show that when a wide technology gap exists, its influence on performance will be less negative for industries under technology strategies with high reliance on external technology sourcing. Moreover, when technology development speed is high, its potential negative influence on performance will be more significant for industries relying on in-house R&D and those on product innovation. However, the conclusions are quite different for knowledge-related catch-up performance. Finally, the positive contribution of FDI presence is more associated with knowledge-related catch-up performance.

Abstract:Since the mid - 1990s, the economic environmental changes at home and abroad have challenged the Zhejiang economy to outward investment and development, in other words,the implementation of what we call strategy. The essential elements of the provincial economy are characterized by huge low- cost labor force. Viewed from a perspective of worldwide dynamic allocation of resources, however, the province is not the terminal for transfer of labor-intensive industry.It has not only held a relative advantage to absorb inward investment but also had a capacity for making outside investment by utilizing lower -cost la- bor in cental and westem China or in other developing countries and regions. The advantage of Zhejiang in re- sources is the abundance of enterprisers-one of the main reasons for its good economic results and a favor- able factor for its outward development. For direct outward investing is in nature an overflow of enterprisers' resourees and a transfer of management resourees. To make full use of relative advantage of Zhejiang economy and to develop an outgoing mode and have a clear picture of an outgoing goal are key issues for success- fully executing theoutgoing strategy for the Zhejing economy and enterpriserss.

Abstract:How latecomers from emerging countries catch up on technological innovation is an important topic for industrial practitioners, policymakers, and academic researchers. This study systematically reviews 37 empirical studies on the precursors of industry catch-up in emerging countries. A general framework on what makes a successful catch-up in latecomer industries is suggested based on literature review. The framework comprises six generic determinants, including technological capability, business ecosystem, government roles, market condition, technological regime, and windows of opportunity. In addition, this framework is applied to the Chinese LED industry, and a case analysis of the catch-up is performed in Chinese LED firms.

Abstract:Through analyzing the changes of the proportion of primary products against manufactured goods,the proportion of general trade value against processing trade value,the inter-industry trade index,the market concentration index and the structure of foreign trade enterprise,this paper reveals how FDI affects the structure of foreign trade commodity,the structure of foreign trade manner,the structure of foreign trade mode,the structure of foreign trade market and the main body structure of foreign trade of Zhejiang province.Taking the structure of foreign trade commodity as the example,it analyzes the FDI’s optimization effect on the foreign trade structure of Zhejiang by the section time series model.The empirical results indicates that FDI really optimizes the foreign trade structure of Zhejiang,but such optimization effects on different industries are different.Concretely speaking,the optimization effect on the electromechanical industry is the greatest,and those on the high-tech industry,the apparel industry and the textile industry is less,and that on the primary industry is the least.

Abstract:The profound influence of network technology for the manufacturing industry of China is taking place. The network of manufacturing industry of China is developing rapidly from bottom to upper. Its main development direction to realize the network of manufacturing industry of China is by the development of network of industry, or by the development of network of region, or by the development of integrated network of industry and region. The analysis and comparison for them are presented. The research results showed that the network of industry and the network of region could play role of mutual benefit. The network of industry and the network of region have their own main development directions, and the former is to deepen the content of network, the latter is to extend the range of network. The development directions are discussed.

Abstract:China is the largest producer and exporter of silk product in the world and its silk industry is one of the special export industries which has strong competitive advantages in the international market currently. In this paper,SWOT analysis was carried out on China's silk industry under the particular background of‘post-quota era’of silk trade. The competitive advantages and disadvantages,the opportunities and challenges in the current international environment faced by China's silk industry were analyzed. In addition,countermeasures such as completing the industrial chain in central and western regions of China as soon as possible,promoting technological innovation in silk industry,implementing brand strategy,and expanding the export of finished silk products were proposed for future development of China's silk industry.

An Analysis on the Status Quo and Evolvement Mechanism for Export Technical Sophistication of China's Silk Industry

Abstract:Based on the status quo of China’s silk industry development during 1992 ～2011,this study estimated and calculated export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry and conducted investigations on distribution and evolvement of the technical structure in exportation trade of China’s silk industry both horizontally and vertically.Furthermore,a dynamic panel data model was built to analyze the evolvement mechanism of silk industry export technical sophistication.The following two conclusions were drawn.Firstly,the export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry experienced an N shaped trend.Its development was rapid after entering the 21st century,but its absolute value of export technical sophistication ranked behind other countries,meaning that China was only a big country but not a strong country in silk export.Secondly,the major driving force for the evolvement of export technical sophistication of China’s silk industry was GDP per capita of which the driving effect is still having the tendency of being enhanced.Except for GDP per capita,export price of silk was also a driving force for increment of silk industry export technical sophistication,while export value is becoming another driving force for promotion of export technical sophistication.

Abstract:Optoelectronic technology is a new technology formed by the combination of photon technology and electronic technology. Photon technology can cause an industrial revolution that supersedes electronic technology, because it will have a deeper impact on industry and society. We review the development of optoelectronic devices and integration technologies. We compare and analyze the development and characteristics of optoelectronic technology platforms, summarize the key manufacturing technologies, introduce several representative optoelectronic devices including flexible devices, and focus on the key breakthrough technologies that need to be achieved. Through a comprehensive review of the development of optoelectronic technology, China should seize the opportunity for a transformation of the optoelectronic technology industry. By drawing on the experiences with advanced optoelectronic platforms and technologies in foreign countries, we should speed up the accumulation and reserves of Chinese industrial talents, pay attention to the accumulation of basic technology, and establish a national optoelectronic technology platform, to greatly enhance domestic levels in these regards and to achieve independent innovations with these devices.

Abstract:In the development of the Chinese economy, the change of industrial clusters and the exhibition industry often occur similarly. And Shenzhen has developed into one of the most influential exhibition center cities in China. While many scholars have overlooked this area of research, and practitioners have not realized its importance. To further develop and gain a larger share of the world market, the case of OCT-LOFT would be studied. Analyzing the current market situation and domestic development status, to propose that the spatial aggregation of cultural and creative industries can promote the economic growth of Shenzhen's exhibition and related industries. It will enhance the visibility of Shenzhen's exhibitions on the Internet, and demonstrate the overall strength of leading the domestic exhibition industry. Furthermore, it can increase the government's attention to the exhibition industry, encourage the integration and development of the Exhibition Industry, and bring new opportunities to the exhibition industry. Abstract:Light industries are crucial for China's economic and social development, and the high-quality development of these industries is conducive to promoting China's economic and social transformation, improving the quality of residents' lives, and forming a new development pattern in which domestic and international cycles promote each other. In this study, the basic development pattern of the light industries and major problems faced by China's economic transformation and upgrading were analyzed, and the common strategic directions for the development of China's light industries were summarized, including green manufacturing, high-end manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, and industrial cluster development. Focusing on major light industry categories such as paper-making, leather, plastic processing, and fermentation industries, key engineering issues that urgently require breakthroughs were proposed, and key equipment, components, raw materials and additives, strains, and process technologies were analyzed. We suggest to promote scientific and technological progress through the construction of innovation platforms, improve relevant industrial policies, optimize development environment, and cultivate talents, thereby promoting the high-quality development of the light industries and enhancing international competitiveness.

Abstract:To develop equipment manufacturing is a significant measure for Shenzhen to adjust its industrial structure and to orient towards a new mode of industrialization.According to the analysis of SWOT,despite the fact that equipment manufacturing has become a pillar industry in Shenzhen,it manifests defects in industrial structure and self-innovating abilities.The good developmental strategy of equipment manufacturing industry in Shenzhen is to strengthen electronic and communicating equipment manufacturing and to extend into digital equipment manufacturing and manufacturing service.Policies and measures concerning organizational guidance,corporate concentration,technological innovation and talent recruitment,are needed to actualize this developmental tactics.
