Abstract:This research describes numerical and experimental studies on the co-combustion characteristics of hydrothermally treated municipal solid waste (HT MSW) with coal by utilizing a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactor. The developed model is supported by some experimental test on co-combustion of coal with HT MSW to simulate the combustion process in a BFB and to evaluate the possibility of co-combustion application in a BFB reactor with different MSW blending ratios. HT MSW mixing ratios of 10, 20, 30, and 50% are chosen and examined at 700, 800, and 900°C to determine at which temperature coal could be substituted with the HT MSW regarding emissions, such as CO, SO2 and HCl. Emissions of NO, N2O, NH3 and HCN from the mixtures are measured, simulated, and contrasted with the results of only combustion of coal. Hydrodynamics and heat and mass transfer, along with reactions during combustion, e.g., coal/waste devolatilization, volatile combustion and char combustion, are taken into account. The results obtained in this part of the study ensure the possibility of accepting the mixing ratio of the hydrothermally treated MSW, co-combusted with coal up to 30% (wt.%) without major modification of the coal-fired BFB reactor. The simulation results are compared with experimental data, which show that the gas species versus time at different heights from the fluidized bed is reasonably simulated. This indicates that the numerical model presented is valid and provides a promising way to simulate the combustion of solid waste in a BFB, which is the predominant technology for co-combustion of waste. The advantage of the theoretical study lies in its ability to reveal features of the detailed structure of the combustion process inside a solid bed.

Abstract:Energy recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW) is a feasible method through various processes, such as combustion, pyrolysis and gasification. Tests on the co-firing of MSW and coal were conducted in a 0.2 MWth circulating fluidized bed, and the emissions of NO, N2O, HCl and SO2 were studied. A three layer feed forward neural network was constructed and trained by the BP method with experimental data. The impacts of mixing ratio and bed temperature on the gaseous emissions were considered. The model predicted gaseous pollutions emissions were consistent with experimental data.

Abstract:Experimental research on co-combustion of paper mill waste and coal was conducted in a pilot circulating fluidized bed combustor with a cross section of 0.23×0.23m2. Mixed waste of paper mill sludge and process residue from a paper company and bituminous coal were used in the experiments. The temperature distribution in the combustor was measured. The bottom ash and fly ash were sampled and analyzed. Six gas components were analyzed with a gas analyzer. The effects of some parameters, such as waste variety, fluidization velocity, secondary air rate, excess air, on the combustion characteristics and the emission of SO2 and NOx were clarified. The experimental results indicate that the incinerator temperature decreases with increase in secondary air rate and waste/coal mass ratio for the waste/coal mass ratios tested. When the excess air ratio increases, the dense bed temperature increases, but the temperature in the dilute phase region first increases, and then it decreases with further increase in the excess air ratio. The combustion efficiency increases with increase in the secondary air rate and decrease in the waste/coal mass ratio. With increase in the excess air ratio, the combustion efficiency first increases, then it reaches a peak and finally decreases. For the waste/coal mass ratio of 1.0, the highest combustion efficiency corresponds to the excess air ratio of 1.25. Higher desulfurization efficiency can be obtained with higher excess air, proper incinerator temperature and lower secondary air rate. The NO emission increases with increase in excess air ratio and decrease in the secondary air rate. Higher temperature, stronger staged air injection and lower excess air ratio are beneficial to suppressing N2O emission from incineration. The emission can be reduced by decreasing excess air ratio, increasing incinerator temperature and secondary air rate.

Abstract:The co-firing tests of municipal solid waste (MSW) and coal were performed in a 0.23 m × 0.23 m circulating fluidized bed (CFB). The influences of the ratio of MSW to coal on the efficiency and the emission of SO2, HCl, NO, N2O and dioxin were studied. Experimental research shows that the efficiency and HCl emission increase when MSW are fed into the CFB. SO2 and NO emissions decrease with MSW increasing. With the ratio of MSW to coal increasing, the N2O emission increases slowly. Dioxin in the fly ash and slag increases with municipal refuse increasing.

Abstract:This paper carried out the experimental research for the co-combustion characteristics of sewage sludge and coal in a CFB incinerator that the diameter of the furnace is 100 mm.The sewage sludge used in the tests is from a sewage plant in Chongqing.The effects of mixing rate between coal and sludge and the quantity of fuel on combustion were studied in tests,gotten some characteristics of co-combustion,such as,the change of bed-temperature and bed-pressure,the exhaust of contamination,analyzed the factor of the effects.The results showed,sewage sludge can combust steadily in a CFB condition only mixed in some proportion with coal;there were obviously some differences in the change of bed pressure between a coal-fired CFB and a mixture of coal and sewage sludge fired CFB.

Abstract:The characteristics of coal washery sludge and coal washery rejects co-fired fl uidized bed combustion process were analyzed. Experimental and analytical results on mixing on performance of dissimilar bed material fluidization system, comb ustion and emission control performance of coal washery tailings and coal washer y rejects co-firing on a 1.0 MW pilot plant were reported. The results show that the developed technology can be apllied to the simutanous combustion of coal washery sludge and coal washery rejects efficiently with low pollutants emission.

Abstract:The co-firing of coal and biomass waste in oxy-fuel fluidised beds is an important oxy-fuel combustion technology for CO2 capture and waste disposal. However, practical experience regarding co-firing in an oxy-fuel fluidised bed is still limited. In this study, a 10 kWth oxy-fuel fluidised bed with continuous fuel-feeding and real-time flue gas measurements was developed. The combustion stability and dynamic response during the switch in combustion states were examined. The effect of the combustion atmosphere (air or oxy-fuel combustion), inlet O-2 concentration (V(0)o(2)), combustion temperature, fuel type, and biomass blending mass ratio (Mb) on the combustor temperature distribution, CO2 enrichment, carbon conversion, and combustion residues were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the combustion state can switch quickly during the cofiring process (similar to the rapid switch in combustion states during oxy-coal or oxy-biomass combustion), and stable combustion in the fluidised bed can be maintained when V(0)o(2) is increased to 30% or more. The optimal range of Mb, which is directly related to the fuel type and combustion mode, contributes to a highly uniform temperature distribution, increased CO2 generation, and decreased amount of unburnt carbon in the fly ash. The bottom slag had a honeycomb structure, which became larger than quartz sand (bed material) after 120 h of combustion. Furthermore, no agglomeration of bottom slag, quartz sand, and fly ash was detected during the tests.

Abstract:Experimental study on the slagging and melting characteristics of ashes generated from coal co-combustion with municipal solid waste (MSW) was carried out in a small-scale pulverized coal furnace. The main elements, particle size distribution and morphology of fly ashes were analyzed. Results show that with rising amount of waste, the ratio of Ca, Fe, Cl, and S in the ash increased, but Mg, K, Al, Na, Ti and Si dropped. The morphology of fly ash was observed by scanning electron microscope, finding that the high ratio of waste enhanced the transfer of particles from spherical to layered structures. The fusion temperature descended little within the range of 2%. A small amount of brown particles were found in fly ashes when the ratio of waste reached to 25%. In conclusion, the co-combustion of MSW has little effect on the characteristics of coal ash. These results provide a theoretical basis for the practical co-combustion of MSW in the pulverized coal fired boilers.

Abstract:Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion is a important method of waste treatment with the benefits of harmlessness, recycling, and energy recovery. Using the existing co-firing CFB boiler to dispose of waste can reduce investment in boilers and environmental protection equipment. However, there is currently limited research available on the co-combustion of coal and waste (especially for papermaking trash), and the mechanism of pollutant emissions during unit operation remains unclear. In this work, the co-combustion of coal and papermaking trash in a three-dimensional industrial-scale CFB are investigated by using the Dense Discrete Phase Model (DDPM) method. Both homogeneous reactions (such as fuel particle pyrolysis, combustion, and surface reaction) and non-homogeneous reactions (such as gas combustion and pollutant generation) are considered. The co-combustion characteristics are comprehensively analyzed in terms of gas distribution, chemical reaction rates, and bed temperature under various operating conditions, including fuel mixing ratio, secondary air arrangement, and excess air coefficient. The results are obtained by comparing the distribution profile along the height. By reducing the mixing ratio of papermaking trash, the excess air coefficient, and adjusting the secondary air arrangement in the lower region, an expanding, reducing atmosphere is observed in the vicinity of the fuel feeding point. This, in turn, leads to an increase in CO concentration and a decrease in NO emissions, which is attributable to the interplay of gas distribution, chemical reaction rates, and bed temperature. A reduction in NO gas emissions was achieved by adjusting the secondary air arrangement and the excess air coefficient. Overall, this work provides valuable insights into the co-combustion characteristics of coal and papermaking trash in an industrial-scale circulating fluidized bed boilers.

Abstract:As one of the most promising approaches to reduce CO2 emissions from power plants, oxy-fuel fluidized bed combustion technology still has a lot of basic uncertainties requiring in-depth studies, especially in application for coal and biomass co-firing. This work focuses on results of coal co-firing with biomass under O-2/CO2 combustion conditions in a 6 kW(th) bubbling fluidized bed combustor. With the same thermal input maintained, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was adopted as a predictive tool to examine the effects of firing coal and co-firing biomass with coal under O-2/CO2 atmospheres. Hydrodynamics, heat transfer, species concentration, and char gasification in a fluidized bed were investigated. In comparison to coal combustion, the hydrodynamic and temperature profiles of biomass co-firing are not affected much when maintaining the same thermal input. The temperature of biomass co-firing at the bottom of the dense-phase zone, which is mainly the char combustion area, is about 10 K lower than that of coal combustion. Higher O-2 and H2O and lower CO2 outlet concentrations were detected with biomass co-firing. Moreover, some typical parameters in biomass co-firing under oxy-combustion, including the cross-sectional average pressure, volumetric fraction distribution of the solid, velocity, and flue gas temperature, were analyzed in different atmospheres (21% O-2/79% CO2, 30% O-2/70% CO2, and 40% O-2/60% CO2). These results provide auxiliary insight into the complex influences on the biomass co-firing process by different atmospheres. Simultaneously, the experimental study of biomass co-firing under different atmospheres is used to validate the CFD modeling.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy in China, the demand for energy is increasing day by day. In order to relieve the energy crisis and lessen environmental pollution, many low calorific solid wastes are required to dispose and recover heat in an efficient and clean way. This paper selected three representative extremely low calorific solid wastes: coal gangue (Q(ar, net) = 4600 kJ/kg) generated from the coal preparation process, oil shale (OS) semi-coke (Q(ar,net) = 2384 kJ/kg) produced from the refinement of OS, and small-size OS (Q(ar,net) = 3530 kJ/kg) whose particle size was below 3 mm. The systematic research of experiments and computational analyses was carried out on a bench-scale fluidized bed combustor and a pilot-scale fluidized bed combustor, respectively, to investigate combustion characteristics in the fluidized bed and engineering applications. The experimental results showed solid wastes within the scope of such calorific value could be burnt steadily in the fluidized bed, and the key to large-scale engineering application was to improve combustion intensity in the furnace as far as possible and reduce pollutant emissions. Based on detailed experiments, different engineering application solutions were put forward in this paper, depending on characteristics of three low calorific fuels mentioned above.
Influence on gaseous pollutants emissions and fly ash characteristics from co-combustion of municipal solid waste and coal by a drop tube furnace

Abstract:Co-combustion experiments of municipal solid waste and coal were carried out in a drop tube furnace at high temperature 1300 °C. The effect of different simulated municipal solid waste (SMSW) added proportion (0, 7.5, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) in the blend fuels on the characteristics of gaseous pollutants emissions, e.g. CO, HCl, SO2, NOx, and heavy metals, and fly ash were studied. The results indicated that CO and CH4 emission concentrations were at a low level under all conditions. With the increasing proportion of SMSW, the combustion efficiency decreased slightly, the HCl emission increased obviously at 25% conditions while at lower proportion conditions the change was not significant; the NOx emission concentration showed a tendency to rise first and then decrease, while the SO2 showed an exactly opposite trend; besides, Fe, Cl and S content in the fly ash increased obviously. Under all experimental conditions, only a small amount of heavy metals were emitted in the flue gas while most of the heavy metals were retained in the fly ash. The leaching results showed that Ni leaching concentration was beyond the national standard which means the fly ash needs further treatment before they can be disposed of by landfill, while the HCl, NOx and SO2 emissions can easily reach the national emission standard under the desulfurization and denitrification system operating conditions in real power plants. These findings are helpful for the further development of co-combustion with renewable energy in coal-fired incinerators, yet more investigation on heavy metal emission in fly ash is still required to be further conducted in the future.

Abstract:The co-firing tests of MSW and coal were performed in a circulating fluidized bed paper focused on the influences of the ratio of MSW to coal on the efficiency and the sion of SO2 , HC1, NO, N2 O, Dioxin and heavy metal. Experimental results showed that the iency and HCl emission increased when MSW were fed into the CFB, SO2 and NO emissions eased with MSW increasing. With the ratio of MSW to coal increasing, the N2O emissions eased slowly, Dioxin in the fly ash and slag increased with municipal refuse added. The entration of Cr.Cu.Zn increased in the slag and the outlet of cyclone with municipal solid se increasing. And the results of experimental study of three ohases fluidized absorption ess for flue gas purification in co-combustion are presented also. When the sorbent is stone slurry, the concentration of slurry is 1 % , the circulation rate is 3 , the jet rate is 5 m/s- 15 m/s the immerged depth of bubbling pipe under the slurry is 140 mm, in fluidized absorption lity for flue gas purification in MSW incineration, the desulfurization efficiency is 90% , the itrification efficiency is 20% -30% , the dechlorination efficiency is 80% , the removal efficiency ust, heavy metal and dioxions are 99% , 98% and 99% respectively.

Abstract:Experiments on co-combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) and coal were conducted in a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB). The MSW sample was pretreated through hydrothermal treatment (HT) for obtaining uniform characteristics. MSW blending ratios as 10%, 20%, 30% and 50% were selected and tested at 700, 800, 900 degrees C to verify to which extent coal can be substituted with HT MSW in terms of emissions and unburnt carbon (UC) in fly ash (FA). The results obtained in this study showed that the lowest CO and NO emissions were found at 20% and 30% HT MSW blending respectively. Moreover, the SO2 emissions decreased with the HT MSW addition and the HCl emissions were below 5 ppm. Furthermore, the UC contents decreased at the mixing ratio below 30% at low temperature. Positive synergistic relationships were identified and it is possible to accept 30% MSW combustion in a coal-fired BFB reactor. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The co-combustion of dry coal and sludge was carried out in a self-built laboratory scale fluidized bed furnace. We used FTIR spectroscopy, high-resolution gas chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and XRF to capture and dynamically observe the flue gas fly ash and bottom ash. The sludge sample was taken from a municipal sewage treatment plant and its mixing ratio was below 20%. The temperature distribution of the furnace was observed and the emissions of the main gaseous pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and dioxins were measured in the combustion process. The heavy metal contents of fly ash and bottom ash were later detected to analyze the migration characteristics. The results showed that all of the gaseous pollutants measured increased linearly with the sludge mixing ratio. However, it could also meet the 1 metal content of bottom ash and fly ash did not change much. Through the elaboration of the above points, this study can provide guidance for future research on the co-combustion of coal boiler sludge and suggest favorable conditions for the co-combustion of coal boiler sludge.

Abstract:The environmental pollution and high energy consumption caused by the coal-dominated energy structure in China have been the focus of attention for a long time. The co-firing of biomass with coal can save coal resources and realize effective utilization of biomass. In this paper, brewery wastewater sludge (SD) and bituminous coal (BC) were blended for an experimental study which aimed to provide basic experimental data and operational guidance as a reference for practical application in power plants. The co-firing characteristics of sludge and bituminous coal were studied. The results show that the burnout temperature and ignition temperature decrease with an increase in the sludge blending ratio. The Comprehensive Combustion Index (CCI) first rises, then decreases, reaching a maximum at about 15%. Compared with the atmosphere with 79% N2/21% O2, under the 79% CO2/21% O2 atmosphere, ignition is delayed and the burnout temperature is higher. Under an O2/CO2 atmosphere, as the O2 concentration improves, the thermo-gravimetric (TG) curve shifts to the low-temperature region, the burnout temperature drops significantly, and the comprehensive combustion characteristics are improved. With an increment of the heating rate, the curve of TG analysis shifts to the high-temperature region and the CCI increases. This study could provide helpful information on practical blending in coal-fired power plants for energy savings and emission reductions.
