Abstract:Based on two-band model, non electron-phonon interaction is introduced. By using the consistent method, the relationship between superconductivity transition temperature and doping properties of MgB-2 system is discussed.

Abstract:Mg1-xMxB2 (M=Li or deficiency) compounds were prepared and their structure and superconducting properties were studied. The results show that nearly single-phased Mg1-xLixB2 samples have been obtained while x≤0.3. With increasing x, lattice parameters a decreases and c shows no obvious change, and the superconducting transition temperature Tc of Mg1-xLixB2 decreases. Moreover, loss of superconductivity occurs for sample with x=0.5. For Mg1-xB2 nearly single-phased samples can be obtained at x=0. MgB2 coexists with MgB4 phase and some minor impurity phases while 0＜x＜0.5. With the increase of x, a and c of MgB2 decreases and increases, respectively, and Tc decreases. The obvious difference in the superconductivity of Mg1-xLixB2 and Mg1-xB2 suggests that Li indeed dopes into the structure of MgB2.

Abstract:Nonstoichiometric binary metal diboride superconductors Mg-{1x}B-2 (x0, 0.1,{0.2}) were prepared by solid state reaction method. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the excess amount of Mg lead easily to the insulating MgB-6 and MgO impurities and the solubility of Mg in MgB-2 is limited. When the impurity density is not very high, the superconducting transition temperature T-c is hardly affected from the study of its resistivity and a.c. susceptibility, but the resistivity in normal state increases rapidly and the diamagnetic screening signal deceases fast with increasing x. The relation between the real and imaginary part of a.c. susceptibility and the excess amount of Mg is discussed. Our result show that the insulating impurities caused by excess amount of Mg will impair the Josephson coupling in the grain boundaries.

Abstract:The density functional theory and full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method are used to study the anisotropic optical properties of superconductor MgB2. The optical conductivity spectra，the reflectivity spectra and electron energy loss spectra have been calculated. The calculated optical conductivity spectra along xx-axis display quite different features in comparison with that along the zz-axis，while the reflectivity spectra coincide well with the corresponding electron energy loss spectra，especially with respect to the characteristic peaks. In the optical conductivity spectra，the first intra-band absorption peak along xx-axis appears at 20000cm-1 while along zz-axis it appears at a high frequency of about 40000cm-1. In order to simulate the temperature effect in these spectra，the Lorentz expansion (δ=0.10eV) is added to the optical matrix elements in the calculation for 0K. In comparison with existing experimental data，a minor discrepancy of 1000cm-1 (～0.124eV) has been found in the calculated optical spectra.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of the new superconductor MgB2 are prepared by a solid-state reaction using Mg and B powders. The resistance measurement shows that the onset transition temperature and zero resistance transition temperature are Tconset = 43.8 K and Tc0 = 37 K, respectively. The Tc0 strongly depends on measuring current. The diamagnetic transition temperature of ~38 K is obtained by the ac susceptibility measurement. X-ray powder diffraction spectra of MgB2 can be indexed using hexagonal structure with space group P6/mmm and lattice parameters a = 0.30864 and c = 0.35212 nm. A second phase, probably MgO, is also found.

Abstract:Substituent alloys of Mg1−xMxB2 with M=Ti, Zr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Ca, Al, Ag, Cu, Y, and Ho and 0⩽x⩽10% have been synthesized by the solid-state reaction. The solid solubility for most of these dopants at Mg site is found to be very low except for M=Al. In most of these alloys, the Vegard relationship holds as the doping level is low. The lattice constants for the fictitious compounds such as AgB2, CuB2, FeB2 have been extrapolated. The superconductivity transition temperature, Tc, shows a systematic changes with the doping level in some of these substituent alloys. Relevant mechanisms of superconductivity suppression have been discussed.

Abstract:We report a first-principles local density approximation band structure calculation on the electronic structure of high-T-c superconductor MgB2. It is revealed that the band structure of magnesium diboride is of metallic type with a wide valence band. The density of states of electrons at Fermi energy is only about 0.72 (states/eV). We conclude that the present calculation excludes the possibility of BCS mechanism in MgB2.
Effects of Al doping on the superconducting and structural properties of MgB2

Abstract:We have investigated the structural and superconducting properties of a series of Al doped MgB2 samples. The results show that the superconductivity of MgB2 is destroyed when Al is alloyed into MgB2 as reported previously. A structural instability was observed from the data of X-ray diffraction. Further study by TEM shows that the Al substitution leads to an ordering occupation on Mg sites. This corresponds to a superstructure with a repeat period of 2c along the c-axis. The superstructure was identified to be a form of MgAlB4 structure which intergrows with MgB2. Measurements on the low doping level samples showed that the upper critical field B-c2, irreversible field B-irr and the critical current density J(c) of these samples were reduced as the All content was increased. Analysis of the upper critical field data suggests that the density of states near the Fermi surface N(E-F) is reduced by Al doping. This is consistent with the decrease in the superconducting transition temperature T-c. The field dependence of pinning force is also discussed for these samples. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Preparation of Ag-doped Mg1-xAgxB2 superconductors

Abstract:We report the preparation of Ag-doped MgB2 through solid-state reactions. All the obtained Mg1−xAgxB2 bulk samples were examined using XRD, SEM, magnetization and resistance measurements. Both R–T and M–T results indicate that the sample Mg0.9Ag0.1B2 remains superconducting, but with a slightly lower transition temperature and broader transition width than the pure binary MgB2. At higher doping levels of x=0.3, a transition into diamagnetism was observed; however, no zero resistance, as shown by the R–T measurement, occurred in the measured range (min. T=10 K). SEM observation showed a layered grown crystal morphology. It seems to be difficult to index the X-ray diffraction pattern by means of the known pure phases.

Abstract:The microstructure and superconducting properties of pure, Ti and Zr doped MgB2, which synthesized by solid reaction method. The heat treatment temperature are varied from 650 to 800°C at ambient pressure. It is found that heat treatment temperature have obvious effect on grain size and MgB2 grains are greatly refined at 750°C. Besides, Zr does not occupy the atomic site in the MgB2 crystal structure, but forms ZrB2 particles in the MgB2 matrix. The results of superconducting properties show that Mg0.9Zr0.1B2 have the highest Jc value sintered at 800°C. It is argued that the microstructure features with good grain connectivity of the Zr doped MgB2 fabricated at optimize heat treatment temperature may take the responsibility for the enhancement of Jc in Zr-doped MgB2 bulk superconductor. The results show a good potential to fabricate high performance MgB2 bulks and wires at ambient pressure on an industrial scale.

Functionals with the van der Waals (vdW) correction (such as OptB88-vdW) may predict critical temperature (T-c) comparable with experimental results for several MgB2-type superconductors, particularly for the pristine MgB2 (39.3 vs 39 K). Interestingly, the spin-fluctuation is found to play a significant role in the superconducting behavior of diborides with transition metal elements, and their T-c can be enhanced monotonically by applying tensile strains. Furthermore, Dirac surface states of Ta B-2 and NbB2 are revealed, suggesting their potential use as topological superconducting materials. This paper provides a useful guideline for ab initio studies of superconductivities and topological properties of vdW layered materials.
Electron-phonon coupling and two-band superconductivity of Al- and C-doped MgB2

Abstract:We have studied the electron-phonon and superconducting properties of the Mg{1-x}AlxB2 and MgB{2(1-y)}C{2y} alloys within the framework of density functional theory using the self-consistent virtual-crystal approximation. For both alloys, the Eliashberg spectral functions and the electron-phonon coupling constants have been calculated in the two-band model for several concentrations up to x(Al)=0.55 and y(C)=0.175. We solved numerically the two-band Eliashberg gap equations without considering interband scattering. Using a single parameter for the Coulomb pseudopotential, which was determined for the undoped compound, we were able to reproduce the experimental doping dependence of Delta_sigma, Delta_pi, and T_c for both alloys on a quantitative level. In particular, the observed differences in the doping range of superconductivity between Al and C doping indicate a pronounced influence of the doping site, which can be explained naturally in the present approach without the need to invoke interband scattering, suggesting that this factor plays only a minor role.

Abstract:We have investigated the effect of unconventional pairing mechanism in MgB2 using a two-band model within the framework of Bogoliubov-Valatin formalism. The approach incorporates the intra- band s-wave interaction in the s- and p-bands, as well as interband s-wave interaction between them. The analysis assumes the pairing interaction matrix comprises of attractive electron-phonon, charge fluctuation and repulsive electron-electron (Coulomb) interactions to account for superconductivity in MgB2. The model is used to estimate the transition temperature and isotope effect exponent as well as to elucidate the importance of interband contributions in the superconductivity of the system.

Effects of Si and C Doping on the Superconducting Properties of Mgb(2)

Abstract:C and Si powders of different sizes were doped into MgB2 separately or together. Samples were made by a solid-state reaction method. It was found that the C doping had a strong negative effect on critical temperature (T,) while the Si doping did not significantly depress T-c. All of these doping materials increased J(c) at higher fields when the doping particles were of nanometer sizes. At 20 K and 4 T, J(c) of the sample doped with nano-Si achieved 10(4) A/cm(2), which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of coarse Si doped MgB2. J(c) of the sample doped with nano-carbon is one order of magnitude higher than for the sample doped with coarse carbon particles.

Abstract:The effects of 0–5 wt.% reduced graphene oxide (rGO) addition on the superconducting properties of MgB2 bulks were investigated. We found that the dense and uniform MgB2 bulks were obtained by Mg diffusion method with rGO addition. The superconducting properties of MgB2 improved by the addition of rGO content of less than 2 wt.%. With more than 2 wt.% (including 2 wt.%) of rGO addition, nonsuperconducting phase MgB2C2 appeared and MgO content increased, which resulted in a decline in superconducting properties.

Abstract:The single phase and polycrystalline MgB2 superconductor was synthesized by the Mg diffusion method and its temperature dependence of resistivity was studied from T, up to 460 K. The normal state temperature dependence of electrical resistivity is linear above 270 K and can be fitted well by the Bloch-Gruneisen expression with the Debye temperature theta(D) = 1200 K for the temperature range from 40 to 450 K. There is an unexpected abrupt jump in rho(T) curve near 450 K. Thermal-gravity and differential thermal-analysis (TG-DTA) indicated this jump of rho(T) could be caused by the oxidation of few Mg impurities in air atmosphere. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:We introduce carbon onto boron sites in MgB2. The resulting changes in crystal lattice constants and superconducting transition temperature T-c are characterized by x-ray-diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistance measurements. The consequence of approximately 10% carbon doping of boron sites is a 1% contraction of the intraplane lattice dimension (with no appreciable change in the interplane dimension) and a lowering of T-c by approximately 7 K. The relative contributions to the shift in T-c from lattice contraction and charge transfer are evaluated.

Influence of carbon doping in the vortex matter properties of MgB$_2$

Abstract:We have studied the vortex-matter phase diagram of low C doped MgB$_2$ superconductor. The significant finding is the appearance of a peak effect, which, as both our global magnetization and local ac susceptibility measurements revealed, is placed well below the $H_{c2}$-line. The absence of significant bulk pinning below the onset line $H_{on}(T)$ of the peak effect implies that the Bragg glass phase is present for $H < H_{on}(T)$. Interestingly, the unexpected absence of bulk pinning above the end point line $H_{ep}(T)$ of the peak effect implies the presence of a slightly pinned vortex phase in the regime $H_{ep}(T) < H < H_{c2}(T)$. In addition, the observed increase of the $H_{c2}^c(0)$ since the carbon doped MgB$_2$ becomes more dirty and the reduced anisotropy, in comparison to the pure MgB$_2$, makes the C-doped MgB$_2$ more favorable for practical applications.

High Critical Temperature and the Resistive Transition of MgB[sub 2]

Abstract:We make a comparative study of MgB2 and cuprate high critical temperature superconductors. Unlike cuprates MgB2 shows typical behavior of phonon-mediated BCS superconductivity. The analytical expression for the so-called McMillan-Hopfield parameter implies that the l(l+/-1) hybridization of conduction band with high angular momentum l is beneficial for strong BCS superconductivity. The potential of further optimizing critical temperature is discussed in connection with the recent band structure calculations. The resistive transitions of high critical temperature cuprates and MgB2 near and below critical temperature are studied. A model R(T, H) equation fairly agrees with the experimental data of the untwined YBCO crystals as well as high critical temperature MgB2.
